There aren’t that many romantic comedies aimed at the bro crowd, but That Awkward Moment is trying to fill that gap. The film stars Zac Efron (The Paperboy), Miles Teller (21 & Over) and Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle) as three friends living out their mid-twenties in New York City; when young doctor Mikey (Jordan) finds that his marriage is imploding, it sends him back out into the world of singles and dating, where his longtime friends Daniel (Teller) and Jason (Efron) promises an oath of solidarity: They will remain single as long as Mikey needs wingmen.
However, as the universe would have it, as soon as the boys swear off love they find that love comes calling for each of them. Before long, guy code has each of guy fronting like he’s still single and ready to mingle, even though each man’s heart has been stolen by a special lady. But the truth must eventually have its day – as must the slow, awkward process of maturing from bros to men.
Written and directed by newcomer Tom Gormican, That Awkward Moment tries to take serious measure of the line between boyhood and manhood, while simultaneously offering enough raunchy humor to keep the guy crowd entertained in between moments of serious reflection. It’s a tricky balancing act to be sure – and one that hinges entirely on the chemistry and banter between the three male leads.
While attending the That Awkward Moment junket in NYC, we had a chance to speak with Efron, Teller and Jordan about which man in the ensemble is the funniest, the power of good banter, what this movie means for their own journeys into manhood (each of the actors is 26 at the time of writing this) – and of course, the possibility that two of them (Teller and Jordan) could be making the leap to superhero action with the rebooted Fantastic Four.
That Awkward Moment will be in theaters on January 31, 2014. Stat tuned for more of our interviews with the cast and director.
