Marvel Studios Phase 1 & 2 Comic-Con Recap Video and Thanos Image

Published 2 months ago by , Updated August 1st, 2014 at 10:42 pm,

Last Saturday Marvel Studios held their annual Comic-Con International panel in San Diego where we met the casts of Ant-Man and The Avengers: Age of Ultron – two films releasing next summer – and were treated to with brief bits of teaser footage. Before the panel began and as the lights went dark in the 6000-person Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center, attendees went crazy, chanting “Marvel” and cheering when anything popped up on the screens.

Marvel has set some hefty precedents with their Comic-Con presentations over the years and while some of us may be a little disappointed that we didn’t learn more on what additional movies are coming from Disney-Marvel over the next few years (there are 7-8 unannounced titles with release dates) last week, Marvel still delivered few crowd-pleasers for the dedicated attendees who waited in line overnight to get into the hall.

And it began with a sizzle reel recap video (up top) of everything that’s come from the studio to date, beginning with 2008′s Iron Man and culminating this weekend in the franchise heading into deep space with the Guardians of the Galaxy and seeing a little bit more of the universe’s biggest, baddest villain: Thanos. As this video began, and we met Avenger after Avenger, the crowd cheered so loudly, the dialogue was barely audible.

With Guardians of the Galaxy hitting theaters today, Marvel has officially released this ‘look back’ to amp up fans a little bit more and even if you’ve seen all of Marvel’s movies multiple times, it’s absolutely worth watching and it sets up the jump into the cosmos nicely at the end with a big intro to Thanos, where you can hear Josh Brolin’s voice for the first time before even seeing Guardians in theaters.

We reported Brolin’s casting as Thanos back in June but Marvel brought him out as a special guest during The Avengers 2 panel during their Comic-Con presentation as well, where the star came out on stage wearing a toy Infinity Gauntlet.

Phase 2 continues this weekend with GOTG and concludes next May with Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron. What are your thoughts on the franchise’s first 10 movies and teases of Thanos?

  1. “I will bathe the starways in your blood.”

Hey, Marvel movies are not Shakespeare (and anyone who says so is high, or a fool), but that Thanos line is well executed.

    Made me go “Whoa…”

    • Tom Hiddleston said many times that there is a lot of Shakespearean-vibe when it comes to Asgard and its royal family, soo…

Anyway, yeah that line is brilliant.

      • And because Tom Hiddleston says so makes it so??? How much Shakespeare have you read? Read some and come to your OWN conclusion.

        • ‘Shakespeare vibe’… Don’t be so literal. On the money. It has, indeed a great Shakespeare vibe about it.

        • Well, seeing as how Marvel execs got Hollywood’s go-to guy for all things Shakespeare, aka Kenneth Branagh, to direct the first (and in my opinion the best) Thor adaptation, I’d have to disagree with you.

Also, yeah, Thanos exudes Shakespeare in Space. That’s a real thing btw. And do not besmirch the Bard’s good name by uttering it in the same post with triple question marks thou arrant knave.

        • Considering Tom Hiddleston has performed quite a bit of Shakespeare on stage, I believe he knows what he’s talking about.

  2. I’ve just recently watched all these movies again and I have to say this clip makes me want to watch them all again, Marvel Studios is doing an AMAZING job with their property. It’s a great time to be a comic/movie fan!!!

  3. According to Variety, GOTG has already hit $100 million! Hope that’s true. That opens up so many doors for future “risky properties” and also speaks to Marvel’s place in pop culture.

  4. Josh Brolin is so damn cooooool.

Oh, also that vid was cool also but JOSH BROLIN AS THANOS!

  5. Funny how they only have a few shots from Incredible Hulk in there, conveniently only the Hulk without Norton. Thought they might have used some shots or lines of General Ross or Banner’s girlfriend to represent that one a little more since they obviously weren’t going to use any lines or shots of Norton. Strange that it still counts but they try to bury or not acknowledge it as much as they can.

  6. seeing a complete view of thanos for a good amount of time was so exhilarating. I can’t wait for him to actually go up against GotG/Avengers and I think Drax v Thanos will be epic!!

    • SPOILERS!!!!!! DONT READ THE REST OF MY COMMENT IF YOU HAVEN”T SEEN GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY*************************************But in reply to your comment about Drax VS Thanos, Like you I am VERY excited to see Josh Brolin as Thanos more, he is a terrific/iconic actor. His tiny scene in Guardians was enough to give me chills. Drax however, as much as he shined in GOTG, and I mean he was inadvertently hilarious w/ his off-beat timing and Shakespeare style of speaking, he squared off against Ronan The Accuser and didn’t do much, granted he was drunk but he really didn’t do much. Thanos is even MORE powerful than Ronan, so I think Drax wouldn’t stand a chance one-on-one w/ Thanos, he’s gonna need some help, like ALL of the Avengers and the rest of the Guardians.

      • If they’re headed the comic book way then Batista’s Drax will be the one to finish Thanos off. Hope he does not give him the Batista Bomb though

      • spoiler, really? even with your ‘spoiler warning’ people are still tempted to look at it. so i think it should be deleted, screen rant.

        • Not really, just avoid reading the comment if it upsets you so much.

        • If people are too weak minded to skip something that is obviously marked SPOILER and then get upset by it, it’s their problem and nobody elses.

  7. MAKE MINE MARVEL

    • +1000

  8. I eagerly await and look forward to each Marvel movie the same way that I use to eagerly await the release of a new mints of comics. Though some movies have their flaws. Have never been disappointed. Looking forward to what phase 3 brings us.

  9. Why does Thanos sound like a guy from Texas?

Anyways Marvels going to crush WB/DC.

    • Uh because Josh Brolin has a bit of a southern accent?

      • It has nothing to do with Josh Brolin. Thanos was born on planet Houston where the three Kryptonians went to fight Superman.

    • I didn’t think Texans could speak so eloquently! Oh well I guess all Texans are not originally from texas.

    • Im more of a Marvel fan than a WB/DC fan but I hope Marvel doesnt ‘crush’ them.

Competitions good & as a CBM fan its a win win for me :)

  10. Correct me if wrong, but I think due to Brolin´s involvement they changed Thanos design… and I dont like it that much.
I prefer the Avengers mid credits Thanos.

    • I doubt they did because all we saw was his shoulder and the side of his face in that scene. However if they have then i guess it’s normal since they change the designs of the Avengers (i.e. Costume, armour, hairstyle) every movie, besides they don’t plan ahead on their designs so maybe they wanted to get Thanos into the scene quickly and didn’t bother to design and decided to focus on making the character design they want when the time came (Guardians and Avengers 3 filming) just like Cap America’s shield looked different in The First Avenger than in the Iron Man 2 easter egg.

    • I hate the Thanos in Avengers. I cringed when he came onto screen. It looked like a rush job that they has to fix with cgi. The new Thanos in Guardians looks amazing. Realistic & scary. Right on the money.

    • I agree with Hyoga1001… The one in the Avengers scene looked like a great Thanos to me. This version looks like one of Floop’s Fooglies…

      • Looks like Clancy Brown to me.

    • Thanos’ face looks better in Avengers. He didn’t look all that menacing in GotG but he still looked good.

  11. How can the Avengers beat this guy, he just has BAD ASS written all over him.

    • the same way like always. after a terrible strike against the superheroes, a luky coincidence will turn it arround.

  12. The finale of all the MCU movies must be epic (and it will be for sure).Something that the Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows did.I mean it all piles up in the end, all the movies that preceded it and the events that happened leading to a climax that took many lives and introduced great twists. With years of movies planned ahead, that’s what I expect from MCU.And Thanos is clearly to MCU what Voldemort was to HP world.VERY EXCITED!!!!

  13. I don’t care if this sounds lame but I would prefer Thanos to have a small chin , better cheek bones and more forehead showing. The guy should be more ‘handsome’ to make him look like a better leader; they got it perfect with Ronan.

  14. Wow! that was a cool video . Makes me want to watch everything all over again. But 1st, Guardians of the Galaxy at the cinema!

  15. Why does Thanos remind me of Clancy Brown?

    • Wasn’t Clancy Brown the guy who provided Lex Luthor’s voice in SUPERMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES?

I think it’s the deep voice. Anyway, this… looks okay… I guess. Would it be wrong if I cry that it’s too comic-accurate? I prefer a little change in the design. He looks like he’s straight from a new Mortal Kombat X trailer.

      • No I meant facially, Thanos looks like he was modeled after Clancy Brown, especially that smirk he gave in Highlander while he sat in church.

        • Ah alright then. He certainly looks like he’d give Hulk a run for purple though.

        • U really had to say that 3x, Dazz?

          • Yes.

This was actually the first time I said it before repeating myself further up the page. And it was only twice.

Good to see maths was your strongest subject though, to be able to see an invisible third time. Lord knows you can’t spell “you” or “times”.

Did you really have to make that comment pointing this out? Nope, not really but hey, I guess you needed to make a comment somewhere on this article, right champ?

  16. I think they didn’t nail Thanos eyes…

  17. I´had never heard of Thanos till I saw him in Avengers, after reading who he really is, I thought to myself, how can such a villain EVER be beaten? You would be bonkers to let Drax fight him, (of course also having read what Drax is). Actually no one, not any army or Mix up of Teams would challenge him in the real world if he really was out there. So I´m kind of anxious to see how they film that.

    • It’s almost funny because I saw his face in The Avengers and as I sat in my cinema seat, the name “Thanos” popped into my head. I have no idea why but, like you, I’d genuinely never heard of him either at that point.

Looked up the name Thanos, found this guy and pretty much amazed myself.
