The prehistoric adventures of the Shannon family in Terra Nova have come to a end on Fox, as the network has announced that they will not be renewing the series for a second season. Fortunately, Terra Nova may still continue on another network.
Simply confirming Terra Nova’s nonrenewal late Monday evening, no statement about its cancelation had been released by the network.
Taking to Twitter, series star Jason O’Mara announced the cancelation to fans:
Bad news guys, Terra Nova has been cancelled by Fox.
While Terra Nova may have been canceled by Fox, 20th Century TV (the studio that produces the series) is still attempting to bring Terra Nova season 2 to air on another television network, though no negotiations have been announced yet.
Returning to Twitter, O’Mara confirmed the plans to continue Terra Nova on another network.

Premiering in September 2011, Terra Nova was considered a television experiment by the network. With high upfront costs stemming for lofty visual concepts, Terra Nova attempted to bring the beauty of theatrical visual effects to television audiences. With a pilot that reportedly cost $14 million, Terra Nova premiered to 9.2 million viewers. Unfortunately, by the time the first season of Terra Nova came to a close, only 7.2 million viewers tuned in.
And while Terra Nova may have lost its way (and its viewers) along the way, Fox’s president of entertainment Kevin Reily revealed that Terra Nova is actually considered a success for everyone involved, with both the network and studio making money on the project.
Though Terra Nova was a fiscally successful project, it’s unlikely that the series will find a new home on another network – at least on a network that could support the $4 million per episode cost.
Even if the series were able to continue on a new network – which would likely be on cable – the cost of the budget would be cut significantly, thus removing the series’ ability to ever reach those lofty visual goals that it originally had set for itself.
So while Terra Nova could continue on another network, perhaps its best to leave the Shannon family in the land of the lost.

Terra Nova was an excellent show. It really pushed the envelope of what story lines and TV shows can do. The story was very believeable in terms of, if we dont get our act together that could be us. It was suspenceful, imaginative, creative and overall a superb show. I was always dying to see what happened next in the show. Im a huge scifi and science fiction nerd so when new shows with big ideas come out like terra nova, im hooked. I REALLY hope the bring back this show, even if its just one season. If they dont i will lose a part of me that has invested my curiosity in this show. I love the story, the actors and the idea. HUGE FAN. Carry on Terra Nova, carry on!
I think it was a mistake of dinosaur size proportions for fox to cancel Terra Nova It was a really interesting show and the season finale left open many questions that I really was hoping to get answers to I really was anxiously awaiting its return and I hope another network has the brains to pick it up
This SUCKS!!! I hate it when finally a show worth watching is pushed to the side. Why? This was a fantastic show with great suspense and great direction. There is no good reason for its cancellation. I am deeply upset. This was a great show that my wife, family and friends would all come to see. Poor decision FOX, but i guess thats not the first time for that.
Ummm why cancel the show??? It was just its first season. Just because they didn’t make much money the first season don’t mean the wont the second.

Terra Nova was a unique and believable show that had thought process. Of course that meant it had to be cancelled. It seems that if it isn’t a reality show or comedy then it gets cancelled from the basic cable networks. I truly hope another network picks up season 2.

Terra Nova was an awesome show, my mother and I got together every Monday night just to watch it, and have dinner….The special effects were great and the story line kept us on the edge of your seats. We really hate to hear that it won’t be coming back this season, and we will keep our fingers crossed they get rid of some crappy show on another channel, or get rid a freekin reality show and play Terra Nova instead…..
I just dont understand how its beneficial for FOX to keep stupid shows running for quite a few seasons and then when a totally original idea came to the network, I mean totally new idea!!! not a remake or a sequel to an old show , fox decides to cancel it.

terra nova was a excellent show. They started out great. Even though most shows always had flaws in their first season this one didnt. There was actually a meaning in it. I still remember all the episodes in the whole season. The best one by far was when there was a total blackout of all electronics because of a meteor. I just love this show>This was just one of my favorite and im gonna miss having it around. this was and always will be ome of my favorite shows

Wow what a brilliant show one of the best in the last 22 years probably in my top 5 , I was so looking forward to season 2 , Big mistake by the rateings crew as this year things are really swinging toward sci-fi and many advances in space travel etc like the plasma rocket which is undergoing testing , i watched battleship and it was a mind blowing flick on blu ray , this is not the first time some uninformed persons have cancelled sequel epsisodes , tell me this why the heck did totally lame rubbish like days of our lives etc keep going ?? man wake up anyway hopefully some new bloods on its way into Fox and shows like Terra will get the green light once again , Fox i bet if you went with seaason 2 rateings would blow the doors of any other show , owell i guess like most stupid goings on in todays world is someones twist on religeon , cheers peeps : )

The show was excellent. It was a scifi family show with great characters and a great plot. I am sincerely worried about people’s lack of values and their lack of imagination, which probably caused the show to be cancelled. This was one of those (non-reality) shows that included family values and an imaginative and interesting story line. Please, someone, pick up the show.
Sadly, this is so typical of the networks. A creative storyline they won’t invest in, and yet ply us with so many *fake* reality shows. Rarely do I watch Fox anymore. I think they’ve lost their edge for creativity and they really don’t seem to care what the viewers want.
I could not wait to watch the show Terra Nova, and had been waiting all this time for this season just to search the net to find out its not coming back… Please networks someone pick this up. I agree fox you are disappointing!

Finally a show that looked good. I have seen so many previews of shows and thought “oh great another show I am not going to watch” then terra nova comes. I think “wow that looks interesting” first new show in years that cought my attention. The first season was so good and the finale had a great cliffhanger ending leading to a great start to the second season then Fox goes and cancels It, what a joke. Someone pick up Terra Nova so we can find out what happens next.
