Terminator Salvation Rated-R Director’s Cut On The Way

Aug 27, 2009 by

Will an R-rated version of Terminator Salvation make it any better?

Terminator Salvation

For those of you who were upset that Terminator Salvation wasn’t R-Rated, you can now rest easy: a Rated-R version of the film is said to be coming to DVD and Blu-ray soon.

There was quite a bit of back and forth before Terminator Salvation came out about it being PG-13 instead of R-Rated, with some people being extremely upset that it wasn’t a hardcore action movie like the first two were, while others didn’t think the PG-13 rating was an issue. The Director’s Cut of the Terminator Salvation has been labelled by the MPAA as “R” for “some violence,” and, “brief nudity,” with the latter probably being the inclusion of a reported scene of star Moon Bloodgood removing her top that wasn’t included in the theatrical version.

Normally I would be really psyched about a movie like Terminator Salvation getting a more explicit rating that allows some of the stronger violence to be shown on-screen, but in this case, does the label the MPAA tagged T4 with really sound like much of an R-Rated movie? “Some violence and brief nudity,” doesn’t sound all that extreme, and certainly doesn’t sound like much of a step up from the theatrical version.

In fact, take a look at the MPAA’s website, which shows the ratings of other Terminator movies, as well as the theatrical version of Salvation.

Interesting…

Terminator Salvation R-Rating MPAA

I’m someone who had a fair bit of fun with Terminator Salvation, even if it was a disappointment compared to the greatness the series achieved under James Cameron in the past, as well as how awesome the trailer made it look. I didn’t have a problem with the lack of “hardcore” violence – although I imagine that was a nerve that was not only touched but crushed for some viewers. By the sounds of it, I don’t think this DVD/Blu-ray version will be drastically different to the one we saw in theaters, and yet the “Director’s Cut” label will most likely snag the money of those who’re hoping for something a bit more full-on than the theatrical version.

Only time will tell…

What do you think about the Director’s Cut of the fourth Terminator getting an R-Rating? Does it sound to you like it will be that much different from the theatrical version?

The Director’s Cut of Terminator Salvation is apparently going to be released on DVD and Blu-ray sometime soon. Screen Rant will keep you posted on when.

They took the malfunctioning parts out of the film for a reason. Ultimately Cameron felt that it made for a better movie if the T1000 is ultimately indestructible, except for the molten metal of course. The T1000 is definitely superior to the TX in almost every aspect. You can list what one can survive that the other can’t and you’ll see that the T1000 can survive everything the TX[TREME13!!] can but the TX can’t survive everything a T1000 can.

And like Matt said, the writers relied on stupid gimmicks like making the TX a female and just the naming itself, TX. I LOVE the excuse… erm, explanation, that X is for Experimental… erm, I guess Xperimental??? Since when did machines choose the sound over the spelling? Shouldn’t it have been TE not TX? And not to mention, the T1000 was experimental at the time they sent that back as well… how come that wasn’t called a TX??

Anywho, I like how according to Daniel, Judgment Day is inevitable, but the outcome isn’t. So I guess only certain things are “inevitable?” And how was this decided? Was there like some cosmic dice that is rolled and the “winners” became inevitable?? And anyway, the results of whichever timeline should only be aware of their own timeline, not timelines that were prevented or changed. If you were born as the result of someone going back to your past and introducing your mother to your father, would you somehow know about the time when you wouldn’t have been born??? There’s no way the T800 sent back in T3 should have even known that Judgment Day was postponed, much less make the philosophical conclusion that Judgment Day must be “inevitable.” How exactly do you determine that anyway? Was there like a plaque somewhere that said it is inevitable? Even if Skynet somehow knew about the other timelines, how does it know that maybe Sarah and John simply didn’t do enough to prevent Judgment Day? How did they come to the conclusion that it is inevitable? Where is the empirical research to back this statement? Right, there is none, which makes it almost a philosophical statement, or I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and consider it a blind guess… I can really see Skynet making assumptions about time travel and altered timelines…

But Matt’s wrong in that it wasn’t that one line that ruined T3, it was many factors. There were the constant gimmicks, the stupid jokes, the piss-poor acting from everyone, John Connor being the biggest pussy I’ve ever seen, a lame villain that never got me concerned for the protagonists for a second, ridiculous action scenes, super prolonged chase scenes that led nowhere, etc. etc. etc.

I can remember watching T2, the things the T1000 was capable of, it was literally scary. There were times, despite me knowing that the movie cannot end this way, where I really wondered how they are going to defeat the T1000. I mean seriously, when the T1000 rode the motorcycle through the window, clung onto the helicopter, smashed a hole in the windshield with his head, then proceeded to “pour” into the helicopter through the hole… Then being frozen, blown into tiny bits, melting, and reforming like nothing has happened, I mean, it literally started to seem hopeless…

With the TX, I was already laughing at what an epic fail it was from the first 30 minutes, not intimidating at all… Very very sad…

Anyway, I really don’t like T3, but of course, this is just my opinion, I know a lot of people liked it, that’s fine, but those are SOME of the many reasons why I really disliked the film. T:Salvation was full of plot holes too, but I’ve seriously disconnected any of these movies to the original 2, which WERE masterpieces BTW, really can care less what some armchair experts think, that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it, anyway, I’ve already disconnected them, so I can watch T:Salvation for the action scenes only, and don’t mind it. I’ve tried treating T3 the same but even then, I find the action sequences to be EXTREMELY, erm, I mean X-TREMELY (13 Type R) poorly put together and choreographed, so even as a brainless action movie it fails in my opinion…

  2. Ken J, I think it was obvious that Connor in the future told the T-800 in T3 to tell young Connor that Judgment day was inevitable so that he wouldn’t waste time trying to stop Skynet as they only had a few hours to seek shelter.

Connor obviously sent Reese and the two T-800′s at the same time in the future,,,,

  3. 790
what do u mean he sent Reese and the 2 t-800s at the same time?

  4. Well according to the T2 novel, written by Cameron and William Wisher.
Connor sent back Reese and then sent back the Terminator in T2. It didn’t elaborate on the third but I’m assuming he would have known a third Terminator was needed to stop Skynets TX as well.

He obviously knew what happened to himself in the past as his timeline would be linear not parallel.

  5. Ken,

“But Matt’s wrong in that it wasn’t that one line that ruined T3, it was many factors. There were the constant gimmicks, the stupid jokes, the piss-poor acting from everyone, John Connor being the biggest [Kitty-Kat] I’ve ever seen, a lame villain that never got me concerned for the protagonists for a second, ridiculous action scenes, super prolonged chase scenes that led nowhere, etc. etc. etc.”

Yeah, I see what your sayin, but that one line was soo stupid, and made no sense, that I just wanted to leave the theatre(would have if they gave refunds) and forget I what I saw.

  6. Um, didn’t the T-800 from the third movie claim he killed John Connor?… I know you only said Connor, but you’re obviously talking about the same “Connor,” as in John Connor, that sent back the others…

Anyway, all of the “explanations” I’ve heard about these things about T3 have been made long after-the-fact by fans, basically justifying it in their mind, and it’s like everyone of them has a different excuse, uh, explanation, when most likely the makers of the movie thought of none of that and didn’t realize they were mistakes in the first place…

But anyway, it doesn’t matter really, since the movie didn’t explain any of it, it’s all speculation anyway, that’s my take on it, that’s yours, I’m sure chrisj has his take, and matt has his, and that’s why some of us liked it and some of us didn’t, guess that’s how it goes with movies, lol.

  7. Yeah Ken the difference is that I could see how Connors supposed death could easily be a glitch or written off as programming that we cant explain til we see what happens in the future. This paradox leaves the door wide open for,,,,?

  8. @ Ken J
Reason why i want to see this franchise thru two more films is because mainly id hate to see this great franchise fall victim to a reboot. I recall Cameron’s T2 had ffew mistakes like when they go to Cyberdyne Systems to blow it up, you hear in one of cop cars that Arnold’s terminator is suspected as murderer of 17 police officers from the first film when in T1 , LT. Traxler stated to Sarah they had 30 cops in the station. All directors made mistakes. You’d be lucky to find a film that has none.

  9. @chrisj

He said there were 30 cops, not ALL of them died, I’m sure even though he’s a Terminator, his purpose was to find Sarah, not specifically to kill all of the cops, just put them down as they resisted, I’m sure some of them survived.

But I’m not like these other people who are trying to explain away every mistake, there are plenty of mistakes in T1 and T2. The most obvious should be the time discrepency. John Connor was supposed to be 10 in T2. Yet T1 took place in May of 1984 and T2 took place in 1994, 10 years apart right? Except if Kyle was John’s father, then that means he would have been born 9 months AFTER the events of T1, which puts his birthdate somewhere around February of 1985, so John should be 9 years old in 1994, not 10, maybe even 8 years old if it took place in the beginning of the year. Of course T3 in his narrative he said he was 13 in the events of T2, but whatever…

Arnold uses a M79 40mm grenade launcher in the movie, in one scene he shoots the door open in the Cyberdyne building. The real thing prevents you from blowing yourself up accidentally by putting a fuse on the grenades where it has to spin 9 times before it arms, so if it impacts something before that, it’ll just bounce off. That means it shouldn’t blow up unless it hits something somewhere around 30-40 meters away I believe. So that scene was bogus too. (But it just made Arnold’s T800 look so freakin bad ass)

They also slowed down the mini-gun he was using later in that same scene for effect. The full speed of that gun is much faster, so you wouldn’t hear the individual shots. They slowed it down to make it sound cooler. Personally I love the way a real minigun sounds at full speed firing, but Cameron had artistic license, and that scene was shot extremely well anyway, from little details like a tree in the way of the shot shredding as he shoots through it to having the glass break on the patrol car prior to it exploding when he fires the M79 at it. Most directors would have simply had the car blow up, Cameron decided, hey, the grenade has to enter the vehicle somewhere right? And note, real 40mm grenades from those things don’t really blow things up like that, lol. The SWAT team moved and operated in a realistic fashion, the music fit with the action perfectly, there’s just so much more that was right than stuff that was wrong, and frankly, you don’t notice any of the wrong things until you think about it afterward.

There were a few other mistakes put in there as well, and I won’t deny them, but they were not clumsy/negligent mistakes, or stupid things put into the movie to use as gimmicks, or anything like that which could ruin the movie like the ones made in/done to T3… And like I said, I didn’t notice any of the T2 mistakes while watching it because I was so engrossed in the movie and the mistakes are so trivial, while in T3, no matter how hard I tried to ignore them, I can’t because the story wasn’t too interesting, the acting was not good enough to fool me into believing it’s happening, and the mistakes were just so blatant. I enjoy movies when I can immerse myself into it so it feels like I’m watching something that’s happening, not watching a movie on a screen, and it was impossible for me to do that with T3. Even T4, that was hard to immerse myself into as well, but at the very least I enjoyed the action sequences. T3′s action sequences were pretty poor in my opinion so even those weren’t enjoyable, I found myself with so many of the “give me a break” look on my face during the action scenes my face almost got stuck like that…

But I agree, I don’t want to see a reboot, but you know someone will do it later down the road. Let’s just hope they have the common sense to reboot from T3 on and leave the originals alone, lol.

  10. @ Ken J
Im sure they will too, they’re dumb enough to do that since they’re rebooting every franchise. We have our differances but im one of those people who try to enjoy the film and not pay attention to how many mistakes gets made. If they reboot, i have they leave the 3 films alone since T3 was Arnold’s last starring film. It would be nice, to me anyways if they finished what they started and film the 5th and 6th terminator films so the whole franchise will be over with, and they know they can always reboot down the road.

  11. sorry, i meant to say above i hope the leave the 3 films alone.

  12. Yah, it was nice to see Arnold in the role, but they gave him the most ridiculous looking jacket ever, he wore Elton John glasses, said “talk to the hand,” and then they didn’t even let him say “I’ll be back.” She’ll be back??? Come on, are you kidding me??? So it kind of made me sad that it was actually Arnold and not some impersonator…

  13. @ Ken J
Reason why they didnt intend him to say I’LL BE BACK, is because this was intended to be the last film, especially last film with Arnold in the role. And Talk to the hand was just the same as seeing the terminator smiling in T2, especially in the special edition when John was teaching him to smile. Mistakes that were in both films.

  14. Uuuhhhhh, no, making him smile does not at all compare to saying talk to the hand… I’ll smile funny a million times and chop off my own big toe before I say “Talk to the hand” to someone…

  15. Ken J,,,
The Terminator was repeating what was said as a defensive response.
Just like the original Terminator said to the punks in T1.
“Nice night for a walk” and “Laundry day right”

Too bad for you the Terminator ended up during ladies night.
    Haahaaa,,,,,
    T3 rocks!!!!!!

  16. Thought it was a gay bar? But you’re probably right, I try not to remember too much from that movie…

  17. It was a biker bar that was doing a Ladies night.
    The dancer was obviously gay.

  18. Haha 790 you’re a mess but you crack me up. :)
I must admit I have T3 on my dvr. I actually watch the first ten minutes then I forward through the action until they start talking about the future and all that. I watch from there until the end. I enjoy the back story even if T3 did get many things wrong.

    Ken
I think the writers of T3 are writing/wrote the new Clash of the Titans! Uh oh

  19. I’m a mess!??!! 8-O
    Wtf,,,,?

I usually fast forward through the part where John explains his past/future to Kate in the back of the truck.

I love the action scenes in the film.
One of my favs is when Terminator breaks open the safe to get the code books, and then says “we must go its not safe here”. :-)

  20. @MCat

They wrote surrogates too I think, and on top of that, it’s directed by the same guy… But I’m going to be a sucker and watch it anyhow because they have Bruce Willis in it…

  21. @ 790
Yup, i forgot about the terminator sayin those lines in T1.
I loved the crane chase in T3. and i remember that Huffington woman who was running against Arnold for governor giving him crap about how he was fighting a female Terminator, especially dropping her head first in a toilet. I liked the cemetary secen where John is panicing and the Terminator chokes him etc. and says Better after John says the F word to him,lol

  22. ChrisJ, (a little inside info) :-)
    ^
the crane chase was intended for a night chase but they decided to do a daytime chase to save 10 million dollars… (True!)

All the massive destruction scenes (crane taking out power poles) were film on a completely false front street.
The set was built on Downey Studios California and was over 1/2 mile long.
The same location was also used for the Manhattan Green Goblin attack in Spider-Man.

  23. Hey 790;

It’s even better if you had read Feynman’s book prior to seeing the movie, where he tells a high ranking officer, who kept his classified papers in a safe. “The only reason you think they’re safe in there is because civilians call it a ‘safe.’” ;)

  24. I’m watching Terminator 3 right now,,,,, :-)

  25. Who directed saving private Ryan? Maybe he should do T5. SPR was the ultimate war movie! Give that guy machines vs humans in the future with a future war!

  26. Hey 790 did you know that the first three Terminator films are all Feynman diagramable?

  27. No Old Man, I did not,,,
I’m always fascinated by your insight and comments…
    :-)

  28. MCat “Private Ryan?” That was Steven Spielberg, I think or was it Ron Howard?? Nope Spielberg.

  29. 790 your watching T-3??? It’s hard to fathom that a robot could be programmed to use hyperbole… but Arnie did say that he was uploaded with basic psychology. Of course using hyperbole is more effective when you know how to smile, huh?
