Terminator Salvation Rated-R Director’s Cut On The Way

Will an R-rated version of Terminator Salvation make it any better?

Terminator Salvation

For those of you who were upset that Terminator Salvation wasn’t R-Rated, you can now rest easy: a Rated-R version of the film is said to be coming to DVD and Blu-ray soon.

There was quite a bit of back and forth before Terminator Salvation came out about it being PG-13 instead of R-Rated, with some people being extremely upset that it wasn’t a hardcore action movie like the first two were, while others didn’t think the PG-13 rating was an issue. The Director’s Cut of the Terminator Salvation has been labelled by the MPAA as “R” for “some violence,” and, “brief nudity,” with the latter probably being the inclusion of a reported scene of star Moon Bloodgood removing her top that wasn’t included in the theatrical version.

Normally I would be really psyched about a movie like Terminator Salvation getting a more explicit rating that allows some of the stronger violence to be shown on-screen, but in this case, does the label the MPAA tagged T4 with really sound like much of an R-Rated movie? “Some violence and brief nudity,” doesn’t sound all that extreme, and certainly doesn’t sound like much of a step up from the theatrical version.

In fact, take a look at the MPAA’s website, which shows the ratings of other Terminator movies, as well as the theatrical version of Salvation.

Interesting…

Terminator Salvation R-Rating MPAA

I’m someone who had a fair bit of fun with Terminator Salvation, even if it was a disappointment compared to the greatness the series achieved under James Cameron in the past, as well as how awesome the trailer made it look. I didn’t have a problem with the lack of “hardcore” violence – although I imagine that was a nerve that was not only touched but crushed for some viewers. By the sounds of it, I don’t think this DVD/Blu-ray version will be drastically different to the one we saw in theaters, and yet the “Director’s Cut” label will most likely snag the money of those who’re hoping for something a bit more full-on than the theatrical version.

Only time will tell…

What do you think about the Director’s Cut of the fourth Terminator getting an R-Rating? Does it sound to you like it will be that much different from the theatrical version?

The Director’s Cut of Terminator Salvation is apparently going to be released on DVD and Blu-ray sometime soon. Screen Rant will keep you posted on when.

  1. …..I could name more, but I’m watching TV, so I just posted the obvious ones.

  2. @ Matt Keith
I could explain those. That little girl was the first to noticed something was around them. Dont forget how the harvester Hitched a ride on that other machine so it could of hovered over them and gently step down to bust tru the ceiling. and the mototerminator heard the song playin miles away. and John tied that wire up before the cracked up his boombox to get the machine’es attention. by how fact it was goin and how far it was coming from, it didnt realized the trap till it was too late. He used the boombox to get the machines attention. Remember how the scout-terminator picked up the music from the jeeps sterio at the observatory before it was chasing down reese and marcus.

  3. Sorry for the mis-types. i typed little too fact sometimes.

  4. fast

  5. Chrisj, the plot holes were all over the place. There’s no way I’m going to get into them, because I’ve written volumes on past threads and I’m done with Terminator Salvation. The film sucked, they should just end the franchise while they’re somewhat ahead. To quote a princess from Naboo, “I vote no confidence” in any future films doing the story justice.

Its too messed up at this point. Sending HK’s back to London, why don’t we just have John Connor develop super powers in the next film? gimme a fracken break!!!!!

  6. @ 790
Not as many as people think. Not only do people exaggerate on how bad they hated the film but i feel people didnt like the film nor T3 mainly because James Cameron wasnt involved cause ive heard people mention Cameron by name and i know its true cause they admitted it. Plus i recall John becoming world-wide resistence leader and theres no script to Terminator 5, and sending HK’s to london could mean anything in the film. London Maybe the proposed location of the film but Salvation wasnt filmed in the Us. Dont tell me you want a reboot to this popular franchise.

  7. Well ChrisJ, I didn’t have a prob with T3,,,

I don’t know how you would get the idea that I want to reboot the Terminator franchise after my previous comments? I’m simply saying that the franchise is a mess and should just be left alone,,,

    I’m done on this topic…

  8. And btw, Terminator Salvation was filmed in New Mexico,, USA.

“Its too messed up at this point. Sending HK’s back to London, why don’t we just have John Connor develop super powers in the next film? gimme a fracken break!!!!!”

    And call it

MATRIX 4 : NEO is John Connor

  10. @ 790
Right now im stating the fact i wouldnt be a bit surprised if i heard someone who think Terminator franchise should be rebooted. These days that what people expect if a sequel fails. People exaggerate how bad the film was is all it is, i even filled the plot holes mentioned by Matt Keith by explaining them. And did it ever occur to people that theres no script for a 5th film, that would mean HK’s to London could change. That was a idea of MCG’s that we all read. There would be more to it of why MCG would want some, or maybe all of the film to be filmed in London. Not much was said about what kind of role Robert Patrick would play other than hes’s a scientist and somehow the T-1000 would be based off him etc.

  11. I actually enjoyed Salvation. It wasn’t great, but still enjoyable. I’d prefer the next film to jump to right after they send everyone back. So what see what we havn’t gotten to yet in the mythology.

  12. @ Daniel F
I thought the same way about the film. the purpose of this trilogy is about how they get to the point where John sends reese back to the past to protect Sarah from the 1st Terminator. Of-course we saw the T-800 in the film, but people have to realize after the bombing of that factory the creation of the T-800 would be delayed.

  13. “i feel people didnt like the film nor T3 mainly because James Cameron wasnt involved”

FAIL. T3 sucked because it took only one line of dialogue to completely ruin the film and negate the entire franchise, but like I said you have to shut your brain off, and I made the mistake of thinking during htat film…well, I didnt’ do it for T4 though and I enjoyed it. Teh director had nothing to do with it…wall nvm I’m sure people whined when McG was brought on. But the problem is the writing T1 and T2 were masterpieces, but T3 and T4 are just mindless action films.

  14. @ Matt
And what line of dialogue could of possibly ruined the whole film of T3? and do you expect all sequels to be exactly the same as the first two films?

  15. @chrisj
I know what matt is going to say. It’s the line when arnie says something like “judgement day is inevitable. It cannot be stopped, you only delayed it”. I’m not exact but that’s my guess for the line that matt thought ruined it.

  16. Sorry Matt I would have to disagree T1 and T2 are no where near masterpieces and are only moderately intelligent action films. Smarter than Transformers, but they were not exactly brilliant masterpieces.

  17. @ Mcat
Ive talked to my friends, co-workers,etc. and all of them pretty much pointed to the fact they feel T3 and Salvation werent good sequels due to James Cameron not being involved even at all. Same with Linda Hamilton, though she wasnt in T3 at all, her character was still mentioned and Hamilton was involved in Salvation in a different way. Mcat I heard people say that same thing about judgement day being inevitable was reason. People forget how other people were at Cyberdyne in T2 and were doin work just as Miles Dyson. Theres always copies of research that wouldnt get blown up in flames. And T2′s ending can easily set up another sequel because James Cameron wanted to move on to other projects. He originally intended to make one Terminator film with two Terminators but technology used for the T-1000 wasnt around yet. You probly already knew that.

  18. @ Daniel F
I agree. People think T2 was way better than T1, but i liked the first film cause everything was more explainable etc. Thru Reese they got to the heart of the matter of the future and how they got to that point. And we saw Skynet slowly become self-aware in T3. That ATM scene wasnt explained on film at that moment but it was about the woman tryin to get cash but Skynet had control of machines like the ATM already. etc etc. Maybe people felt T3 didnt feel like a sequel due to the large gap of years in between. Anyways i still think people exaggerrated how bad the films were.

  19. “You only postponed it. judgement day is inevitable”

That one line alone makes the entire sereis meaningless. If Judgement Day is “inevitable”, then so would Skynet’s defeat. And if the future is set then sending Terminators back in time to kill Connor would do NOTHING…even if they saw Connor as a threat, then killing him would do nothing. Thus making the events of T1, T2, and even T3 MEANINGLESS.

No, I don’t expect every sequel to be the same, but going from two films that are considered Sci Fi LEGENDS to mindless action flicks is a step backwards.

  20. Another thing wrong with T3 is that the “TX” is weaker than the T-1000, and its only called the “TX” b/c it sounds “cool”. And Connor was a pussy in the film.

  21. @chrisj
yeah i didn’t mind the third 3rd or the 4th film. Or I should say I didn’t dislike those movies as much as many other people. I somewhat enjoyed the movies since they are a part of the terminator franchise and I like anything terminator related. I even liked the Sarah Connor chronicles.

  22. Actually Matt it doesn’t make the film’s meaningless. If Judgment day is inevitable that means no matter what the war will begin, but that doesn’t mean the outcome of the war will always be the same. No matter what Judgement day happens, but maybe with Connor dead the machines will in the end completely win or with Connor alive maybe the Humans at some point will over come the machines. There is still a point in sending machines back and trying to kill him and still a point in sending people back to save him.

  23. It says in T3 that the future is set, and if it is, then the future can’t be change. So there would no point in sending terminators back in time. Thus the machines lose, and then there would be alternate timeline.

So only Judgment day is inevitable? Okay that no sense.

  24. Wait Matt what about thinking about it in these terms? First, Judgment day was inevitable but mans ultimate future isn’t. That could be Skynet’s reason to send Terminators back and the reason man needs to do its best to try and defeat the machines.

Stories sometimes are presented as empty games. Their value is only in the clever way they are played.

  25. That would make sense. Judgement day will happen no matter what but the future beyond that isn’t set. Or is it? Didn’t the writers make it that John Connors saves mankind in the future but that the war continues beyond that with his kids? It sounds like a never-ending cycle to me.

  26. It continues until it finally runs afoul of “The Matrix.”
790 assures me that can’t happen, but I don’t know MCat, I just don’t know.

I guess it depends on what weight they give Kyle’s word during his questioning in number 1..

  27. Some people get upset over that line,” Judgment Day is inevitable” in T3. What they don’t consider is that every time Skynet sent back a Terminator, it created a solid lock on “that” timeline. So its more plausible that JD would eventually occur rather then Skynet being defeated in the past by John and Sarrah.
Besides after T2 multiple timelines were created due to the actions of the Connors.

Cameron could have wrapped up the story in a Victory for the humans at the end of T2,(it was even filmed) but he chose to leave it open…
If you want to blame him for leaving the franchise open, well there ya go…

Ok I am fracken done with Terminator Salvation!!!!!!!!!!

  28. MCat, the timeline focal point is the second Connor sends back Reese in response to Skynet sending back a T-800 to kill his mom.

If they did the sequel right the prevention/sabotage of the time machine should be the basis of the story/trilogy.

It shouldn’t be wrapped up in (Bales) Connor’s rise to power, that would evolve naturally in a well written script…

Ok I gotta get back to work,,,, ;-)

  29. @ Matt Keith
I would say TX might be easier to terminator but i wouldnt say TX was weaker. Both Terminators showed flaws. The terminato took a shot gun to TX and TX kept walkin towards him as the bullets had no effect. IN T2 the T-800 shoots the T-1000 till he falls down. And in the steel mill, every shot Sarah gave, T-1000 stepped back especially if she had one bullet to use then he’d fall into the melted steel and the movie is over. Not to mentioned the liquid nitrogen sequence in the original release and special edition where it showed T-1000 malfuctioning by standing in one place he looked like he was melting. As for John being a pussy, put yourself in his place. unsure and afraid of living on the grid, not wanting to take a chance of another terminator encounter, especially when his mother is gone and afraid if he’s still destined to lead the remaining human race. Its easier to deal with the crap he went through as a kid, but as a adult and knowing alot more than what he did in T2. You get the point.
