A couples of months ago, I was bouncing around IMDB doing some research on The Expendables and buried deep in the cast listing was Gary Daniels and on his bio page was a listing for the movie version of Tekken. The movie was listed as ‘in development” so I wasn’t too worried but in the back of mind I knew this frightful omen could become a reality.
Alas, my fears have been confirmed, for today we bring you the first trailer for Tekken. The film is based on the wildly popular arcade fighting game from the 90′s which has become a home console hit today. Back when I frequented many an arcade establishment, Tekken would have many quarters lined up across the top with guys waiting to play the winner of each match. Unlike Mortal Kombat , which was two-dimensional, Tekken was one of the early pioneers of 3D game play.
I wasted my hours and skipped many college classes playing Tekken – I’ll still take anyone on with Paul Phoenix – but at no point did I think the game would make a good movie. However, some Hollywood mogul reliving his early 90’s childhood disagreed with me and decided to invest in making his Tekken movie dreams a reality. We have the trailer for you below, but words can’t really express how utterly awful this movie appears to be.
Watch it and be the judge for yourself:
In case you weren’t able to grasp the plot, here is what IMDB says about Tekken (which is Japanese for “Iron Fist” BTW):
“ A Young Man Who seeks revenge of his mother’s death. He finds his grand-father, Heihachi Mishima, and pleas to be trained. When the Mishima leader announces a “King of Iron Fist” tournament. He finds out that his mother’s killer, Ogre, will be participating in the tournament. He must fight against the world’s top competitors to achieve his goal with no interference.”
So let’s see, what is Hollywood’s track record when it comes to fighting video game movie adaptations?
Mortal Kombat 1 – Decent
Mortal Kombat 2 – Bad
Street Fighter – Bad
Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li -Bad
DoA (Dead or Alive) – Bad
Dragonball Evolution – Very Bad
The King of Fighters -To be determined (but doesn’t look good)

So Tekken doesn’t have a deep, rich, successful video game movie history to draw from, but maybe the director and writer will be enough to overcome that drawback? Dwight H. Little is directing and his past movie credits include Phantom of the Opera, Marked for Death, Free Willy 2, and Murder at 1600. An opera movie, Steven Segal, a sequel about a whale and Wesley Snipes… this doesn’t bode well for Tekken.
Alan McElroy wrote the screenplay for Tekken and you may know his work from such hits as Spawn, Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, The Marine and all three Wrong Turn movies. Oh man… Tekken is screwed. Hey, I could be completely wrong though and this movie will turn out to be the best fighting game movie ever adapted. We shall see.
What did you think about the trailer for Tekken and what are your thoughts about fighting game adaptations in general? Will Hollywood EVER get one right?
Tekken has no official release date but should overwhelm theaters in 2010.

i thought dragonball evolution was awesome! LOL!!! (mark my sarcasm)
but no! not one more horrible fighting game becoming movie: no well the game is alright, but a movie with a bad director is doomed. script(bad), fighting sequences (might be good, who knows) dialogue (absolute horrid) etc
if there is some hot half–scratch that– totally naked women and nasty neck breaks i suppose its watchable:) tho probably rated PG13 cause of all the kid fans YAY!
I've read from multiple sources that the original rating was NC-17 for graphic violence and sexuality/nudity but then got re-cut to be hard R.
Amen
Although I did come to enjoy MK:A after seeing it a bunch of times. The fight scenes are still very good, good costumes on Smoke and Cyrax, and great techno music mixed very well with the fighting. “So bad it's good” comes to mind wathcing this.
MK1 is one of my favorite movies of all time. Damn fine movie.
tekken trailer?
tekken trailer?
yeah aperntly D.Rodman is acting again, if “double team” wasent bad enuff Lols
and i swear if a see a dude W/a Jaguar's head or a giant pandaW/boxing Gloves i'm just gonnna….i'm just gonnna …… i'm just gunna throw-up.
ahh, maybe is i jus play tekken 6 and rock back-&-forth this will all blow over quietly.
oh and i agree (Sigh)
This is why, even though i really want one, I am worried for the Halo adaption. People are going to assume, becuase of the previous game to movie adaptions, that its going to be horrible. I mean, c'mon! You would've thought that after 6 awful game movie adaptions, that they would've learned their lesson! At least pick a game that has a decent story, like Halo. Eric Nylunds novel, The Fall of Reach would be a perfect story to use for a Halo adaption. But sadly, a part of me thinks that this “curse” will never be broken and that some games should just be left alone i.e., Halo, Gears of War, etc.
*sighhhh* indeed.
exactly
waste of time and money imo, the only reason i would watch this PoS is for the martial arts, but i doubt the choreography will be any good (probably slow to show of moves from the game – see the part with raven and eddy)
is it me or is kung le getting roles in crap movies, first there was “fighting” then “pandorum” and now this crap.
really wow thats so cool, district 9 had pretty good special effects, and was an allround good movie, this on the other hand is probably using all that money to pay the big name martial artists, and maybe for the sets nothing else, most the actors look like newbies anyways so i doubt they spent much on the actors (apart form those who could fight)
are you seriose, wtf hehehe if its going to be R (MA for australia) then i might watch it only for the voilence, and nothing else:D
dude didnt you see yoshimitsu (the robot thing with samurai sword) they had to be drunk to come up with a stupid costume design like that, the yoshi in tekken is an alien so as far as im concerned he shouldnt have been in the movie in the first place
the people who made the first power rangers movie could've done better lmao i mean power rangers now and then look better than this junk… and what pisses me off the people who did 300 wanted to do this..
really? i guess this is good news tho:p might see something actually worth watching in the movie then:)
Actually they are calling it Tekken. Iron Fist is just the english translation.
Yeah, I'm actually excited about the casting decisions. That's the only selling point on this movie for me. I'd like to see how they did with all the characters, as it seems they did it pretty well.
Some good casting but what about the main kid? I just can't see him as a “fighter” you know?
I'm definitely seeing this but not in theaters.
What's sad is that they've had a Tekken ad up for about 6 months on a side of the building on my way to work and I drive by everyday and think, “I can't wait”…but now I just don't know.
Haha that's hillarious. I agree. At first I thought;gee maybe this IS the preview and this film's going into the characters background which…is why I always worked to beat Tekken 2 with each player…to get their stories. But no; limited if any character develoment AS USUAL. Also, doesn't this trailer totally remind you of the movie 'Running Man'?
Lets not forget to include the script writers, cinematographers, lighting and rigging, CGI artists and what not. The director does not do everything, and well sometimes they just have to produce crap kinda like DragonFail De-Evolution.
LoL… we could also add Double Dragon to the List. Id place it right after the Van Damme SF just because Marc Dacascos was giving out beat downs with a Rating of ROFL. What about you good sir?
I didn't add DD because it's more of a side scrolling action/adventure game and not a two player fighter game. But I'm down for anything with Marc Dacascos in it. One of the only reasons I watch Iron Chef America
Remember though after the DD cartoon they make Street Fighter Style game also, and well that sucked lol. Yeah, but Dacascos get's overlooked too much kinda like Donnie Yen in some respects.
Well, its only going to be in thesters for JAPAN. In the UK its going straight to DVD. Therefore I say get it for good fights and be done with it….unless you live in JAPAN…..
Video Games made into to movies turns my stomach………..
I heard Splinter Cell was an idea being played with….Could be good if those involved actually consulted with Tom Clancy and a decent screen writer…..
Looks cheese tastic i'll find it in blockbusters bargin bin in a few months for £3 then all the lads and beer sounds like a good nite
I think it looks good. DvD worthy, not big screen. The only good game into movie was Mortal Kombat. They need to focus on more story lines from actually playing the damn games.

IT is gonna be BADD!
They never stick to story lines.
That is the problem with trying to please a bigger audience.
Hollywood sucks ASS!
What the heck!? That small fry is Jin!? You gotta be freakin kidding me.
