‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Lair Revealed: Who’s Hungry for Pizza Hut?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with pizza Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Lair Revealed: Whos Hungry for Pizza Hut?

It’s hard to know how to feel about the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. On the one hand, those who fell in love with the original comics and TV show have every reason to be excited by the prospect of another big-budget movie based on the property. One the other hand, it’s being produced by Michael Bay (Transformers) and directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles) with Megan Fox playing April O’Neil, all of which are factors that put some TMNT fans off the idea.

As a reboot, TMNT is something of a box office risk for Platinum Dunes, which may be one of the reasons that it was recently shunted back to a slightly quiet August 2014 release date as opposed to the June release that it was previously slated for. Filming has been underway for a while and although there have been a few candid shots taken during location shoots, it’s generally difficult to get a look at actual built sets aside from images approved by the studio.

To pass the time while TMNT fans nervously await the film’s release, however, a small glimpse into the world of Liebesman’s Turtles briefly made its way onto the internet. Latino Review got a birthday present in the form of some photos from the studio set of TMNT, which show where Donatello (Jeremy Howard), Michaelangelo (Noel Fisher), Leonardo (Peter Ploszek¬†and Raphael (Alan Ritchson) spend their days when they’re not out fighting Shredder/Colonel Schrader (William Fichtner).

As LR predicted, the site was quickly hit with an order from Platinum Dunes to remove the photos, so those who were unfortunate enough not to get to them in time may just have to use their imaginations, based on our description of the many things that we saw. One word that could definitely be used to describe the home base is ‘cluttered,’¬†but in an artful way that will probably end up looking quite good on camera.

Ninja Turtles Lair 570x402 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Lair Revealed: Whos Hungry for Pizza Hut?

My artistic depiction of the Ninja Turtles’ lair

First of all, the images reveal a sponsorship deal with Pizza Hut, as the Turtles have a sofa that is very conspicuously made out of Pizza Hut boxes. That’s perhaps to be expected, since simply having pizza boxes with a generic made-up brand name would have meant missing out on valuable product placement dollars. Still, at the risk of starting a faction war, better Pizza Hut than Domino’s.

Sticking with the subject of furniture, a second image featured a haphazard bank of monitors that are presumably used by Donatello to spot crime going on overhead, and these are accompanied by an office chair made out of skateboards – it’s even on skateboard wheels to aid in easy maneuvering. The guys also own the two staples of ultimate cool: a beanbag chair and a disco ball. The set designers really do deserve some applause for this effort, since they’ve effectively recreated the general look of a teenager’s bedroom right down to the posters, the model airplane and the stolen parking meter.

If you managed to see the images before they were taken down and remember spotting something that we missed, let your fellow Ranters know about it in the comments. Everyone else, tell us how you feel about Pizza Hut being the new brand name on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ favorite source of nutrition.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will open in theaters on August 8th, 2014.

  1. That picture is EXACTLY what I had in mind when I thought of their lair… Without the multi color sex toys on the left…

    • yeah… not really sure what you guys were goin’ for with those…

      • That’s blatantly the skateboard chair. I used shades of Titian and mixed them in with a more modern, abstract style.

    • And what is that behind the sex toys? Looks like a crude drawing of a man taking a leak.

      • This picture is like a Rorschach test. Be careful what you comment.

        • I clearly have issues.

          • Big time…….

      • Careful with that filthy comment, Filth Pig

  2. The turtles love pizza and they live in New York City. A city known to have some of the best pizza joints in the entire USA and they choose to eat Pizza Hut? My suspension of disbelief doesn’t stretch THAT far, I’m sorry.

    • Agreed. Should have really picked out a decent mom & pop location to advertize, but that doesn’t pay the Michael Bay bills. Also, I doubt the boarders in them would ever allow them to cannibalize boards for chair. Sigh.

      “Oh, the lack of humanity!”

      • I remember my tmnt vhs and that played before the movie lol wow nicccccccce!

    • Well I agree. NY does have the best pizza around. But Hollywood looks for many methods to make extra money so it’s understandable. It does look like they pay homage to the original creation of TMNT. Hopefully it will be good. Some may think the original movie is a little hokey but it was fun. I hope they make this movie very fun and exciting and brings the comic book to life on the screen.

  3. Colonel Schrader? Really? !

  4. New York has signature style pizza and they went for Pizza Hut. I remember watching the credits sequence of the original movies and thinking “Damn that pizza looks good.” Pizza Hut is garbage. This may be the most trivial complaint ever, but I don’t care. The turtles would never order some garbage ass Pizza Hut, when they could buy some of the best pizza in NY. Completely unbelievable.

    • IF turtles could order anything, it would be lettuce… Unless they are alien turtles ;)

      • LOL.

    • In the original film, they ate Domino’s. Not that far off from Pizza Hut.

      • actually, the turtles ate Domino’s, but the commercial in the beginning of the VHS was a Pizza Hut commercial. AND Pizza Hut did a TON of cross-promotion with the turtles back when they were at their peak… when the cartoon was on…. back…. before the dark times…

        • And BK too.

          • +1 and +1 for both of ya. Definitely remember the BK toys which were cool and the Coming Out Of Their Shells cassette and tour. I still have the Coming Out Of Their Shells tour poster on my bedroom door back at my parents lol.

    • im sorry but only Americans would think that the best italian dish is in America

      • And only a non American would make such an ignorant comment.

      • Pizza as is served in america is not really italian. It is very much American food.

  5. Another site posted the images about two months ago. They also had a picture of the Turtle van. Pretty cool stuff.

  6. I think Pizza Hut is probably the better bet. They’ve never had to run an ad campaign that essentially said, “Sorry our pizza used to be so terrible, world, but we think we’ve fixed it now so order from us again.”

    • To be clear, this is strictly in reference to the Dominos vs. Pizza Hut question. It’s not commenting on Pizza Hut vs. good pizza.

  7. Obviously the Turtles aren’t from Ohio, cause then the couch would have been made out of Donatos boxes. OK, I’m hungry now.

  8. Looks pretty cool, found some pics online. It’s pretty much what’d you’d expect. And the sofa really is made out of pizza boxes. When it was written in the article I figured they were just so many it looked that way aha. There’s a giant light above the pizza sofa, and there’s not one but probably a dozen small TVs ahead of the sofa. It looks like it came straight out of the animated cartoons to be honest. Nice stuff.

  9. Before we start bashing Pizza Hut, most people in the US don’t live in

  10. Gross, Pizza Hut… no wonder they’re mutated.

  11. While I am not interested in the Bay version of the reboot in any way, I am, however, quite interested in seeing more of your version.

    • I’m thinking of taking this one step further and making my own animated TMNT movie in Paint. Such talent shouldn’t go to waste.

  12. Holy product placement Batman. Then again, Michael Bay is associated with this film.

However, the “coffee table” in front of the couch that is also made up of pizza boxes look different so they could be something other than Pizza Hut.

I love how we’re actually discussing the brand of pizza box in the set design of their lair.

  13. I remember on the 80′s animated series when the Swamp Frogs were going back home, the turtles offered them pizza. The Frogs were like, “Yuck, we hate pizza”. That would b a idea for a sequel maybe, team vs. team.

  14. I take it you guys was bored over at screen rant, smh.

  15. What…. No Papa Johns?!?!? WTF?!?

    • Ta!

  16. chris bosh reminds me of a turtle

    • Yea him and Mike Singletary.

  17. MMMM<…turtle soup…mmm,mmm, good!

  18. Let me just say that for Screen Rant’s first foray into art, this piece is amazing

  19. Equals le poorly drawn dildos?

    Dirty basterds. :P.

The picture made me crack up, though. ^_^.

  20. Movie directors are running ideas

  21. Wow i just looked at the leaked photo, then back at SR’s drawing and i couldn’t tell which one wasn’t a photo, that artistic masterpiece is that good!!!!!!!!! oh by the way why is there a pile of odd socks in the bottom left hand corner of your drawing :-) . In all seriousness i love the drawing 10 out of 10 for spending time doing it, comedy gold

  22. Screen Rant’s effort looks like background art from South Park.

    • Nice! Great find man, that actually looks really realistic and I love the skateboard chair. That’s rad. The pizza box couch is actually awesome, I’m just praying they actually have the Turtle Van and that it has a pop out door. Would be great to see live-action Mousers that Shredder uses on the Turtles. I imagine in real life those would be easy to dispose off since they’re only bi-pedal, but still, if one chomps down, it would hurt like hell I’m sure.

  23. The cool thing about the Pizza Hut placement is that it’s a pretty “tubular” homage to the Arcade Game for Nintendo, which is a freaking classic. It featured Pizza Hut ads on the walls of the city streets and pizza slice power ups you could find. So I really don’t mind this because it was actually IN real Turtles promotional material/games.
