Last year, Paramount Pictures launched a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film from director Jonathan Liebesman. Shortly after the blockbuster premiered, the film studio announced that a sequel would be arriving in 2016. Although Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wasn’t necessarily a hit among critics – read our review and listen to the SR Underground discussion – the film was a success at the box office.
Little is known about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, aside from confirmation that fan-favorite characters Bebop and Rocksteady will appear. Despite plans to begin filming in April, a famous basketball player with a cameo has revealed at least one scene from the film that has been shot, as well as the possible subtitle of the sequel.
While on Grantland’s The Lowe Podcast this week, Los Angeles Clippers player J.J. Redick revealed that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel will be subtitled Half-Shell. Additionally, Redick said he was scheduled to film a scene at Madison Square Garden on March 26th.
Redick briefly discussed the scene that he was set to shoot with fellow Clippers Austin Rivers, Matt Barnes, Spencer Hawes, DeAndre Jordan and five New York Knicks players. Redick said he wouldn’t have any speaking parts in the scene, but did not reveal anything else about how the scene may fit into the film.
However, Redick did say that Will Arnett attended the Clippers vs. Knicks game on March 25th, where the actor was filming scenes for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half-Shell. THR is reporting that Victoria’s Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio was also at the game, filming with Arnett.
Ambrosio has appeared in Casino Royale, Entourage, and Gossip Girl, but the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel will be Ambrosio’s first speaking role. She will play herself and the love interest of Arnett’s character.
Dave Green (Earth to Echo) has taken over directing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half-Shell from Liebesman. Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec returned to write the sequel, which will see the return of Arnett at Vernon Fenwick and Megan Fox as April O’Neil.
The Half-Shell subtitle for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel is far from confirmed, and may change before a title is officially announced by Paramount. Half-Shell may simply be a working title for the film because it doesn’t offer any insight into the plot or revealing details about new characters that may appear.
However, Half-Shell does have nostalgic appeal to those who watched the cartoon series on which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is based. Half-Shell is, of course, part of the phrase “heroes in a half-shell” by which the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are known, and was featured in the theme song for the cartoon series.
Whether Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half-Shell is the final title of the sequel remains to be seen until Paramount makes an official announcement. At the very least, viewers have some major basketball cameos to look forward to as well as the big screen debut of Alessandra Ambrosio in the sequel.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Half-Shell is scheduled to premiere June 3rd, 2016.
