Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Character Designs Production Images Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Production Images Reveal Tougher Turtles, Sharper Shredder [Updated]

Right now, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has fans pretty freaked out. Michael Bay is producing the film through his not-so-loved Platinum Dunes company; the director of Battle Los Angeles (far from a universal crowd pleaser) is at the helm; the storyline and character design rumors have not been encouraging; Megan Fox was cast as reporter April O’Neil… we’ve heard all of these complaints and more.

Turtlemania (not the good kind) reached a new pitch recently, as the image of an alleged TMNT official Halloween costume broke onto the Interwebs and had people freaking out all over again. Some people were anxious about what the costume might imply about the overall design of the motion-capture CGI turtles we’ll see in the film; others somehow worried that the child’s costume WAS the official look of the turtles in the film (can’t really explain that). In either case, fans have grown more worried than ever.

…But Halloween costumes are just flimsy merchandise. Even when the images that depict them are 100% accurate, there’s no telling what percentage of accuracy that costume has when compared to finished CGI renderings in motion on a movie screen. (I could go down of list of cases where crude images betrayed what turned out to be successful character designs – but we have someone already working on that article. icon wink Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Production Images Reveal Tougher Turtles, Sharper Shredder [Updated] )

Now CBM has posted a series of images that might change the Ninja Turtles debate yet again; they are pictures supposedly taken by a source close to the production, depicting the new Ninja Turtles in maquette (figurine model) form:

Now, the initial speculation about the new Ninja Turtles began with alleged toyline descriptions. The Halloween costume image matched the toy descriptions, thereby lending further credit to theories about the character designs. These production maquettes (if that’s what they indeed are) also fall in line with those two previous examples. The image is blurred (we may soon have updates with better looks), but here are details of the leaked toy descriptions, which we can now see confirmed by the maquette photo:

  • Leonardo: a sort of pseudo samurai gear get up including shoulder armor, some leg bits, arm bracer and foot wear up to the calf with bindings showing… Armor (non metal) along his chest as well.
  • Donatello: a mix of techie, modern and a dash of samurai…with some gadget on his head and gadgetry coming off of his shell.
  • Raphael: an urban warrior look with white, bandage-like wrappings on his feet, right leg, and right arm. He wears this very Conan-esque loin cloth..thing..with leather straps draping down as if he were more suited for gladiatorial battle.
  • Michelangelo: a hoodie wrapped around his waist, pants and sneakers with the toes cut out, wrappings on his hands and forearms, a necklace…and his mask ends drape down to his chest.

At this point we can basically call it: what we initially heard from those toy descriptions is almost certainly what we’re getting in the film – and there’s good AND bad news that goes along with that (quasi-)assurance.

GOOD NEWS: Those maquette turtles look WAY better than what the Halloween costume had people nervous they were going to see. The turtles – for all their “urbanization,” “modernization” and/or “gadgetry” – look like actual mutant creatures that are trained (and athletically able) to kick some serious ass. The four of them look distinct, with distinct personalities, and they also fall on a good line between being kid-friendly and adult acceptable. When getting four humanoid mutant turtles who know martial arts to look “realistic” on the big screen, you could do a LOT worse than this.

BAD NEWS: If the leaked toy designs were correct, then we could be in for a pretty bad version of Turtle-nemesis, The Shredder (Lone Ranger star William Fichtner). Here’s what was said about him in the leaked descriptions:

Pointy edges coming off of absolutely anything. He’ll be the stuff of ridicule for some time. Very overcomplicated outfit.

The image above is a cool rendition – but if the source who initially saw the toy designs felt the need to use the phrase “stuff of ridicule,” that’s probably an omen that something is off in the design.

…Then again, fans have been panicking about the design of the Turtles, and now it looks like that could turn out okay. So… here’s hoping?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will open in theaters on August 8th, 2014.

  1. Those Turtle designs look great. Anyone who complains about them needs to be slapped. How bad could they have looked? These designs are pretty awesome. Dreading seeing what Shredder looks like if the description was accurate.

  2. God I hate admitting this but they look so badass. Raphael is like Brock Lesnar as a humanoid turtle. I’m slightly more hopeful for this film.

    • 2002 Brock Lesnar when he weighed 295 pounds and looked like a vanilla gorilla.

Definitely not current Lesnar who weighs about 250 after life-saving stomach surgery that forced him to retire from MMA.

But yeah, agree with you, that’s one scary look Raph.

  3. They actually look awesome, though they also look like hulking giants, wonder how big theyll be onscreen compared to people.

    • After looking at them for 3 minutes Ive begun laugh crying because they do look really good, which tell me how low my expectations were for them due to the transformers looking like…really nothing, the bay transformers look like nothing but scraps of metal and cg, whereas these seem to have bulk and substance in their design.
But I do know that bays only producing, so, whos to say that might be a factor

  4. Micheal Bay should stay out of those property and go back to bad boy.

    • or retired caus i feel when he cast megan fox as april it was a big F&#@ you to the fan

  5. Glad to see the comments here so far are more realistic than those on other sites.

    • & Shredder looks AWESOME! Doesn’t look too over the top to me.

  7. Shredder looks pretty damn awesome!

[EDTIOR'S NOTE: Thanks Kels! I added the Shredder Image to our Post! -- Kofi]

    • My bad. Click on the homepage once you go to that link and then scroll down.

    • No problem Kofi

  8. Those look fantastic, those will make awesome action figures. Hopefully Hot Toys can get the rights to produce 1/6 scale ones that are movie accurate. I am a huge TMNT fan I have been collection them since 1980 and these have really impressed me.

  9. I don’t hate it.

    Carry on.

  10. I love the design

  11. The designs look AWESOME!!! Its much better than what I was expecting.

  12. I do hope this movie does good because I love tmnt. Also the design looks great!

  13. This Michael Bay hater is stunned. Those turtles look flippin’ cool.

Internet… You never cease to amaze me

  15. they look amazing.

i love it when people get proved wrong. this is why i try not to hate of things that are just rumors and speculation. it can really screw up your attitude towards a movie. i hope people are more excited for this now. shredder also looks amazing.

  16. “Backpeddling?” It’s not “backpeddling?”

We were mislead by TERRIBLE photos and now these AWESOME INCREDIBLE AMAZING figurines have restored our faith. Nothing wrong with that…nothing at all.

  17. I got a Super Shredder vibe from the Shredder pics

  18. I have to say that the Turtles look BADASS!! Awesome!!

  19. Giggity.

  20. I’ll admit, the designs are much better than expected. But the only reason why i think this movie will suck, is because of it’s director. That’s why.

    • totally agreed

    • Jonathan Liebesman must’ve have REALLY hurt you in the past.

      • The only thing he’s done wrong so far in my book is direct a poorly written US Marines commercial that had no pizazz or excitement so hardly his fault there.

Judging by these designs, I may see this movie now.

  21. Mr. Bay & Co., you’ve got my attention with those new designs. Now lets see if you can keep my attention…

  22. They should have revealed these images officially AGES ago and avoided all the hate and rumors this movie has been getting. I can say I’m actually pretty excited to see how this movie turns out.

  23. These are SWAG AS F**K!

  24. The comments look way better this go round. The kid was clearly photo shop to me but the updated versions look great!

    • I didn’t know Halloween costumes available on websites and in catalogs are actually Photoshop and not real fabric. Thanks for enlightening us all on that one.

  25. My god I hope that’s actually Shedder’s design. The mask looks sick. These designs seem to have a more adult feel to them. Makes me think maybe the film will be darker. Then again, it’s for the kids. Even so, a PG-13 rating could do great for a turtles film.

  26. Simply amazing. Holy s***. I’m so watching this movie.

  27. Why pants/loincloths/whatever? I mean seriously, what is the big deal with having to clothe these characters that didn’t have pants when they first appeared?? They’re CARTOON characters, you don’t have to worry about genitalia if you don’t want to!

That being said, I never cared about the design of the turtles. I care for the voices and the story much more. So while I am stoked about the designs, I’m still holding out to see the actual movie to pass judgement.

    • Well if its supposed to be realistic then they have to tackle some realistic things like genitalia. I they look very good. I have renewed hope. And the shredder costume is also very nice.

  28. I wouldn’t take the fan comments about “ridiculous” Shredder at all seriously. It sounds like standard fanboy crying about an old character design being updated. The comment about the Shredder design looking “overcomplicated” echoes every comment every nerd has made about any updated superhero costume.
