When we selected Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for our “Most Anticipated Movies of 2014” list, it wasn’t because we were overwhelmingly excited for it so much as we were morbidly curious about what Michael Bay, his Platinum Dunes production company, and Battle Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebesman have done with the property. An icon for children of the ’90s everywhere, the new TMNT established the wrong precedent almost immediately with initial word that the film would feature everything from a wildly different alien origin story to a title that dropped the “Teenage Mutant” wording.

Some of those initial worries have been smoothed out; the film WILL be called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the origin story will largely remain the same. However, when it comes down to the look and characterization of the TMNT principal players, there’s still been plenty of anxiety on the part of fans. Today that anxiety will likely reach new levels, as a Halloween costume reveals what could be the new look of the Turtle clan.

Have a look at this new version of a Michelangelo costume, courtesy of TMNT.com:

When considering just how valid (or not) that image above is, it’s probably best to refer back to some recent unofficial descriptions of TMNT toyline inspired by the movie:

Michelangelo’s costume sounds like the most modern of the bunch: “a hoodie wrapped around his waist, pants and sneakers with the toes cut out, wrappings on his hands and forearms, a necklace (could be puka shell beads?) and his mask ends drape down to his chest.”

So, taking inventory of the photo above:

  • Hoodie around waist – check.
  • Pants and sneakers – check.
  • Forearm wrappings – check.
  • Shell bead necklace – check.

In fact, the only thing the toyline description mentions that we DON’T see in the Halloween costume pic are the long mask ends – though it’s easy to see why that detail might be left out of a child’s costume (tangled ends, etc…).

Bottom line: When you have toyline descriptions alone, that’s just smoke; when you have toyline descriptions matching up to separate pieces of merchandise (like a Halloween costume) it’s pretty safe to assume that we have fire on our hands. As in: this is probably the design that Liebesman and company are going with.

Should that be the case, then we can probably say that – while there will undoubtedly be some vocal detractors – the design depicted in that costume skews close enough to the original Ninja Turtle cartoon  (and movie) design to keep older fans happy. However, if the designs of the Halloween costume do reflect they toyline and subsequently the film designs, it also means that the new version of Shredder (played by Lone Ranger star William Fichtner) will also probably adhere to what was leaked in the toy descriptions:

Pointy edges coming off of absolutely anything. He’ll be the stuff of ridicule for some time. Very overcomplicated outfit.

No es bueno, if true. The last thing fans want to see is a villain who will be the butt of jokes rather than fearsome (see also: Bane) – and with some pretty concerning ideas seen in an alleged leaked script still hanging in mind, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has a lot of hill to climb before it wins fans’ respect.

  1. Oy *facepalm*

    • It kinda looks like Shrek with Mikey’s mask on

  2. OMG!!!!!!! These ninjas need to practice the art of invisibility harder and vanish as well as this franchise!!!!!

  3. Shredder looks the s***!… if that were the case.

  4. That is some UGLY costumes hopefully what we see on screen will look different. But this project seems dead in the water

  5. Whats up with the lips

    • the lips? Who cares about that…HIS HANDS ARE WHITE!!!

  6. I’m gonna bite my tongue until we see an official picture or the trailer, because if I don’t I’m afraid I may have a break down!

  7. if anyone complains about this then they are just taking the p&&s

    • I really don’t see the issue here. He looks like a Turtle, in fact the only thing different between the new look and the old look is, he wears clothes in the new one. Take those away and underneath he’s the same.

      • Issue is that doesnt look like a turtle but a fat green voldemort.

        • yep… cause every version of the turtles havnt looked like voldemort…

        • It does look like a turtle, with the exception of the clothes, they haven’t changed his appearance.

          • What are you talking about? Since when did they have lips, and humanoid noses? Take off the mask, and you have more of a shrek than a turtle (as others have already pointed out). The face is ALL WRONG. Lets not even get started on having a sweater tied around his waist like a pre-teen girl from the 80′s.

  8. Teenage Mutant Honey Boo Boo’s

    • Hasbro has nothing to do with TMNT

    • Playmates, not Hasbro. But let’s keep in mind that these Costumes usually look awful. If the final on screen product resembles that deviant art piece, I’m happy. I’m a huge TMNT fan and I’ve always wondered about the masks and gear they wear. They should express their individuality I think. I’m holding on to hope.

  9. I’m not sure if I’m gonna watch this, perhaps later when it’s released in home video…
I do however hope they don’t forget that the movie’s title is TEENAGE mutant ninja.. as in don’t make them into grown-up like :(

You know what? I actually wished they would release a big-size movie scale version of the 3D animated Nickelodeon show instead… THAT I would definitely watch

    • Deff! Speaking of which when will new episodes air?

    • yup.. the current running nick 3d TMNT is awesome… i would totally watch it on big screen..

  10. for the post above, forget the dash at the beginning. it took me 5 tries to get it, and the similarities are really close, especially with Leonardo

  11. Now I want the movie to be just four guys wearing those costumes.

    • Well it couldn’t make the movie much worse-probably.

  12. Dang smh

  13. Looks like a teenage mutant turtle to me. I think the negative comments on this article are just trying to find ways to hate on it now they’ve shown the design is close to the ones we all grew up with in the 80s and early 90s.

    • I think it looks like crap. I’ll wait for an official look of the Turtles. One thing I hate is the waste down design. Is that supposed to be pants?

      • it says it in the article that they’re pants.

    • It looks like crap, dazz. It has lips, and a human-ish looking nose. It looks really off, and not really anything like the classic design other than it has a big green head and a mask.

    • I think it’s not too bad. Again, these are kids costumes and they are usually a cartoon version of what they actually look like on TV. I think they kind of look like the 80s/90s version with some modification. I won’t really judge until I see the final product but on another site, they had someone in the crew do an article that said the
“Halloween costume and the finished product is like comparing apples to oranges. They are just very much different in appearance.”
This kind of makes me hopeful but for me, I am more concerned with the overall storyline than anything else. Bay does good with action but when it comes to the storyline he’s all over the place.

  14. If I were a kid, I’d be afraid of that costume. Creepy looking.

  15. Looks cool to me can’t wait :)

  16. It’s a kid dressed up as Shrek that’s in a Mikey costume.

Pants really?? Would have been better to have him in board shorts.

  17. Thats a sh*tty outfit, hopefully the real face is different,.

  18. Shoes?! A hoodie around tied around his waist? WE WOULDN’T WANT HIM TO GET COLD SINCE HE IS COLD BLOODED!

I will wait for the trailer, but come on! We can’t have a classic look? Turtles without pants is sooo out of bounds territory now.

    • And the term, “Modern”. That design doesn’t make him look “Modern” it just makes him look stupid. The hoodie wrapped around your waist isn’t 2014 nor was it ever a thing.

      • I hate the necklace and sunglasses, screams d-bag turtle.

  19. are these turtles living in the sewers of the Jersey shore?

  20. He’s wearing Kick-Ass pants.

  21. Looks like Jim Carey from the mask

  22. This is some shotty photoshop mock up. Can’t be real! How is this a story. It sucks

  23. I as well, think all movies should be judged on nothing but the type of store bought Halloween costume kids buy.

    • 1) This isn’t a movie review. 2) This isn’t all we’ll be looking at to judge (there’s the talent involved, the tone, the trailer, and the film itself). 3) Not all movies inspire children’s Halloween costumes so what the heck are you even talking about.

  24. Well there goes my childhood. thank you Michael Bay for raping my innocence

  25. For a costume, it doesn’t look that bad. The description of the cinematic look of the turtles sounds like the costume, but I think it’ll look fine in the movie.

  26. You know what?…Ninja turtles have tattoos as well ¿!!?
