‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Teaser Trailer: Are Heroes Created?

Published 1 year ago by , Updated April 3rd, 2014 at 4:26 pm,

Easily one of the most contentious film productions of the past year, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot has faced a steady stream of fan outrage – ever since it was first announced that divisive filmmaker Michael Bay would produce the project. Starting with the casting of Megan Fox as April O’Neil to reports that the titular heroes would simply be Ninja Turtles of extraterrestrial origin (not Mutant Teenagers), passionate fans of the original Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird comic series – as well as the subsequent animated shows – have been extremely outspoken about the modern remake’s repeated attempts to defile the beloved brand.

Throughout, Bay and director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) have reassured passionate Ninja Turtles lovers that the film will honor the source material, while also providing a new bar for TMNT live-action adventure. To their credit, after a laughable Halloween costume reveal once again sent fans into a fury, leaked images of the actual Turtle designs appeared online – to mostly positive response from casual moviegoers and die-hard Shell Heads alike.

Still, anyone on DeviantArt can update the look of the Turtles, and without seeing the characters in motion, the designs only go so far in providing an idea of what to expect from the feature film. Now, with only five months before the film’s release, we’re finally getting a look at Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the form of an official teaser trailer.

In addition, we now have an official synopsis for the TMNT reboot:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

Unsurprisingly, the footage is short on overt shots of the TMNT heroes – which will no doubt be featured more extensively in the first full trailer for the film. We get a few good looks at the more “realistic” Turtle designs, along with brief glimpses of the shadowy do-gooders in action, but the teaser spends the majority of its time setting up a new version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles backstory and world.

Interestingly, the footage is narrated by Eric Sachs/The Shredder (William Fichtner) who, based on his voiceover, indicates that he, along with April O’Neil’s father, created the Turtles (with Ooze) for the purpose of curbing unchecked criminals in New York City. Why a criminal mastermind like Shredder would want to fight crime is, of course, unclear at this point. It’s certainly likely that Shredder’s narration is unreliable and that he actually created the Turtles as weapons to gain an upper hand against competing crime organizations – until the heroes turned on their creator. Another possible explanation could see Shredder setting out with the intention of enforcing justice, only to become corrupted and power-hungry in the process.

Some fans will, without question, balk at the reveal that April’s father was also involved in creating the Turtles but, in terms of delivering the best movie possible, the choice helps provide a more meaningful reason for the reporter to become so obsessed with this particular story (and its heroes). A valiant investigator, willing to put her life in danger for “the truth,” works at surface level but connecting April’s father to Shredder and the Turtles provides a lot more room for human drama to go along with all the Ninja fighting. Plus, mysterious scientific experiments should also open-up the film’s core storyline – so that the filmmakers can explore plenty of fan-favorite characters and ideas in subsequent installments (see: The Amazing Spider-Man movie universe).

Despite all of the cartoonish elements, the trailer’s tone is actually pretty serious – and reaffirms Hollywood’s ongoing effort in providing every superhero franchise a “dark” and “gritty” reboot. That said, don’t expect Platinum Dunes and Nickelodeon Movies to pass up the opportunity to appeal to a whole new generation of Turtle fans – with characters like Michelangelo (not to mention Will Arnett’s Vernon Fenwick) running around, there’s sure to be plenty of humor (and Cowabunga) to go along with the shadowy Ninja action.

  1. The CG looked as bad as the effects in the early spiderman trailers. The biggest thing is making sure the turtles look real. Hopefully these aren’t fully rendered and when the movie gets closer to coming out we’ll see improved CG. All that said, it looks like it’ll be fun. Can’t wait for it.

    • Would you release a trailer with unfinished CGI?… I say this is the final product.

      • The first trailer released almost never has completed CGI.

        • I agree, because all though we have a trailer now, they’re still working on the movie so it’s possible that we will get to see much better cg in the final product or even in future trailers

      • Well, most movies do. Look at amazing Spiderman. First trailer looked like video game footage. Last one looked fantastic.

      • The first trailer for The Amazing Spiderman 2 was released with unfinished CGI….
Now it looks great. Im expecting and hoping the TMNT film will do the same.

        • Also look at the CGI for Hobbit 2, those early ones…..wow they looked bad.

  2. first!!! weak!!!!

  3. Not sure how I feel about this…

    • You should feel good.

      • I feel good especially at the parts where Ralph was thrown into the army hummer like a cannon and the small part w/ mickey talking to April telling her to relax and took his mask off. Aside from non Japanese shredder I’m starting to warm up to this more and more, still wanna see what splinter looks like…

    • i know, from the director of the abysmal Battle:LA, and the producer of an entire abysmal filmography come TMNT and it looks like an awful transformers clone.

  4. So there not aliens? Was this all one big ploy?

    • They weren’t aliens from the start, it was all a misunderstanding. It was the Ooze, which has Alien origins.

      • Actually, the original concept was for the turtles to be from an entirely different planet, populated by turtles. So it wasn’t just that the ooze was alien in origin. They tried taking the entire mutant thing out.

  5. Well those turtles fall squarely into the uncanny valley, don’t they? Nightmare fuel, for sure.

  6. Looks real good, I like the mask bit at the end. Definitely not what I was expecting, I am going forward with cautious optimism in place of my rage fuelled pessimism from now on :)

  7. The turtles look terrible. The story line sounds dumb. This movie = failure. Thank you Michael Bay for possibly ruining my childhood favorite.

    • This guy REALLY isn’t a turtles fan. Take your narrow one canon view and stuff it.

      • No kidding! He says failure, but Michael Bay and his director will laugh on the their way to the bank with their hundreds of millions of dollars that this film WILL earn. They will have my money on opening weekend, that’s for sure.

        • Hundreds of millions? I seriously doubt it, more like it will sink without a trace. While i like Bay as a director, the films he produces through Platinum Dunes are, without exception, rubbish. Don’t take my word, check out the critical average on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platinum_Dunes). On top of that, Jonathan Liebesman has never made a good film, or even a remotely decent one. You’re entitled to your opinion Aaron, but you don’t seem to like other people expressing theirs. Mine is that the film looks pretty poor, i loved the original comics, but this looks shoddy, and with the track record of the makers i expect it won’t be very good, or a big hit.

          • Dude, do you even know how much money Transformers made when the first movie came out? A LOT.
So you saying that this will flop is kind of unlikely, considering how much money each Transformers movie made, even with it’s die-hard fans complaining about it. I’m not saying I’m right, but I really do believe that this movie will make plenty of money.

      • Honestly, this looks like a bad movie, period. I can’t even start to bother with any canon/non-canon b******* when the very designs of the supposed main characters are as ridiculous as they are, and no, I dont mean the lacking CGI, I just mean the designs themselves.

Not to mention that it looks to have been shot exactly like bay shoots his transformers movies, so it isnt even gonna be original in its badness.

    • eh I doubt you even read the original books. Beer swigging cursing teenage mutant ninja turtles. The cartoon was the travesty. Anyone basing their opinions solely on childhood memories and a cartoon needs to have a wake up call. This movie looks tight and a welcome relief to watching Vanilla Ice sing “go turtle go turtle go”

  8. This is pretty much a TransFormers impersonator! Only with Turtles instead of vehicles. This has ‘Worst of the Year’ written all over it!

    • Actually, this looks more like Amazing Spider-Man. Seriously, would you be able to tell ANY of those New York shots apart from ASM if you didn’t know about this movie?

      • No it doesn’t. Look at the trailer again. It doesn’t look like ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’.

      • I respect opinions, but it is my opinion that some opinions are lame.

        • That’s the problem! You’re so obsessed with this movie, that you think everyone’s opinions are lame! That’s disrespecting an opinion!

          • What exactly from the trailer makes you think this movie will be “worst of the year”? I’m genuinely curious because i thought it looked pretty sweet to me

            • Because of who’s involved in the production. Michael “MoneyBags” Bay is producing, and Jonathan “I talk too much” Liebesman is directing. The direction looks horrible! The jokes felt forced! Everything screams ‘worst of the year’ in my books!

          • I’m not obsessed with it.

          • Come on kids. Play nice.

            • You all humor me. Keep doing whatever you think you are doing. It’s rather funny.

  9. They need to touch up on the turtles… They can do better then that.

I am going in the movie theater hoping for a good movie, let just hope Mr. Bay learned something about film making over the years.

    • Well it’s a good thing this movie doesn’t come out until August…

      • Barely through the first page of articles and already I find you extremely annoying. I guess you’re going to be “that guy”. So can I look forwards to a comment from you replying to every comment that says something not 100% about the movie?

        Aaron you’re embarrassing yourself.

  10. Do I hate Michael Bay’s films? Absolutely. Do I have my doubts about this movie? Of course. But I won’t judge too quickly. Looking forward to this, if not solely to see the biggest adaption of my childhood put on screen.

  11. Only 10 seconds in until our first building explodes. Sadly, this isn’t what I was hoping for.

Is it too much to ask that a Turtles Movie resemble an old school martial arts ninja film rather than a blockbuster alien invasion film.

Huge turtles fan here but I hated every second of this. (Not just moaning and being negative for the sake of it either) I know you can’t judge a film from a 1 minute trailer but you can tell what kind of film they’re trying to make, and to me anyway, this is just horrible.

    • A screen ranter above (@whatever) got it spot on. This is basically a Transformer trailer with CGI turtles instead of robots.
I’m utterly disgusted at this, I knew all the production news was bad but i still held out hope,, not anymore I’m afraid.

      • Just replace the Transformers with Ninja Turtles, replace the Transformers plot with the Ninja Turtles plot, replace the Transformers villains with the Ninja Turtles villains, replace the props from Transformers with the props from Ninja Turtles and replace every possible identifying characteristic of the Transformers movies with some identifying characteristic of the Ninja Turtles movie and BAM! Other than that they’re practically the same movie!

        • Haha! Well done! People want to keep saying that it’s basically Transformers JUST because Michael Bay is involved. Plenty of movies involve New York being decimated but no one compares those to Transformers.

        • I thought it looked more like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, except instead of Jim Carrey there’s turtles and instead of getting their memories erased they’re being Ninja Turtles and instead of Kate Winslet with crazy hair there’s Ninja Turtles.

        • Hilarious.

    • Hilariously, that wasn’t even an explosion, and there are no explosions on the entire trailer.

      • Hmmm, the top of a building falling off due to massive flames and a loud bang, Looks like an explosion to me.

        • Yeah! It’s just sooooo weird that there are explosions in action films, which is Michael Bay’s forte! SOOOOOO strange.

This just in: Michael Bay likes to and excels at making action films. I’m sorry that you don’t like the genre.

          • Aaron, are you actually Michael Bay trolling the comments section and defending this film? You seem to be getting your Ninja Turtle panties in quite a twist.

    • Yeah I know Aaron, you’re spot on.

This does look so bad it’s unbelievable.

      • I think the movie looks great im a huge fan of tmnt an have been since I was a kid I like the new change an the new look its bad ass

  12. i am cautiously optimitstic

  13. they were part of my childhood – so I’ll watch it. I’m right in the middle of it’ll good or a disaster.

  14. I have to admit that the joke about the mask got a good chuckle out of me so that’s a plus.

Other than that I really don’t know what to make of this movie yet.
I’ve been as vocal as anyone about my hate for all things Platinum Dunes but I don’t want to be so biased that I let my opinions cloud the final product.
The full length trailer will go a long way in determining if I actually see this in the theater or wait until it’s streaming.

  15. If you close your eyes and just listen to the narration and sound effects it would be hard to differentiate this trailer from something like Spider-Man or Bat-Man. Guess they are trying to go with what is selling right now.

And even though many comic books are based in New York or other big cities (fictional or real), how many times a year are people going to watch the same visual set pieces of buildings blowing up and cops cars getting overturned ?

  16. This movie will be awesome. Anyone who thinks it will suck or does think it sucks after seeing it is kidding themselves.

    • You are kidding yourself thinking other people can’t have different opinions.

      • Please point to where I said no one can have an opinion.

        I’ll wait…

        • Well apparently if anyone’s opinion differs from yours…its “unbelievable”. How many more times are you going to post a one word response with no follow up?

    • Unbelievable.
Sorry, must’ve got stuck in Aaron mode. Anyone who thinks it won’t suck or doesn’t think it sucks after seeing it is kidding themselves.

    • Are you on the Bayroll?….erm, I mean Payroll!?

      • +1

  17. I cannot wait. Yes there are changes, but if you don’t want changes then watch the 1990 film. But comic books change origins all the time, yet when a movie does it “MY CHILDHOOD IS RUINED!”.

I’m excited to see what this incarnation brings. If it sucks, it sucks, but I’m not going to declare said suckitude before I see it.

    • Well said!

    • Exactly my thoughts, mab. I keep telling people that if they want to see the original story and canon, then watch the cartoon and/or movies from the 90s. It’s that simple. What the hell is the point in doing an exact remake? That is unoriginal and downright stupid. It’s the same thing with Transformers. I love all three of the Bay movies, but so many people speak against them and claim it isn’t the original story. Well, yeah…they are not supposed to be. May even said years ago when he first began work on the movie, it isn’t going to be a remake. His stories are just based on the original characters and some story lines. That seems to be the case with TMNT and I’m fine with that.

  18. And the inevitable complaints begin. What do you guys mean the turtles look terrible? No they don’t. When did we become so ridiculously spoiled and entitled as fans that we have to complain about everything freaking thing?? The turtles look great, and so does the CGI. I have seen MUCH worse CGI than this. I wish people would take a second to think about all the hard work, talent, skills, and education necessary to even use this kind of technology instead of just whining all the time. The turtles are actually distinct, look as much like actual turtles as possible, and actually have their own individual personalities and clothing styles just like real teenagers do. This will be the best interpretation we’ve seen of them yet. I’m not saying the movie is gonna be amazing, because I don’t know. But as someone who grew up watching TMNT, I’m just super excited to see this franchise still pumping, and getting another shot at the big screen.

    • I’d give you $1,000 if I saw you in person because your post is perfect.

      • Just send him a Baycheck! …erm, I mean Paycheck!

        • Perfect Motoko, just perfect!

        • So is it like the new hipster thing to hate on Michael Bay? cause most of the movies I’ve seen that he’s done have been pretty good.

          • Nothing new about it.

      • Well you know…PayPal is actually a thing that exists…

Haha, thanks Aaron! Glad there are others out there with open minds!

        • Or he can use his Baypal account.

          • hahaha oh man i am crying

            • The first two were cute, this one made me actually lol :P

    • @dragonsoul2
      Well said my friend.

      • Thanks, Steve!

    • no, they don’t look terrible but neither do the look great. There is something that I’m not liking but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

And I’m in the, “not impressed” crowd but am willing to not condemn it off of one trailer.

  19. Damn you Michael Bay. You know my weaknesses….honestly I never learn. This film was not on my radar until now. Now it is…well…still outside my top ten most anticipated for the year. Too much to beexcited for these days. Something has got to give.

  20. This looks like a sequel to transformers 2. Megan fox’s character just changed her name to April and moved to New York and that’s why she wasn’t in transformers 3. Mystery solved. My fear all along was that the new TMNT would look just like a transformers movie. My fears have come true.

    • keep crying

      • Didn’t think I was crying. Just stating my opinion. I never said that it look bad, just that it looks like the transformers movies.

        • No, it doesn’t.

    • If Michael Bay wasn’t the producer, and Megan Fox wasn’t in it, but everything else was same, would you still say that?

      • Yes. I am not saying it looks horrible. It’s just not look I was hoping for. If look appeals to others and they really enjoy the movie and new turtle fans are made, that’s ok with me.

  21. First of all, yes it sways from the original story line (sad that there is no Casey Jones)but these turtles look waaaaaaaay better than the costume ones and movement is more fluid. I, for one, am looking forward to this movie and as with all reboots, you have the fanatics, who will always hate the movie no matter how good it is or how good it looks.

  22. I think it looks good for what it is.

People need to not judge trailers so much. The movie is still in post production.

  23. I love the animated series, i got my kids into the animated series, and even excited for this movie. the second i saw leonardo, i got chills, but i just hope this movie is good. not just for me, but for the kids. will someone please think of the children!!!!

    • Eh, not the kids. This movie is for people who grew up in the 90s. I was born in 81, so I LOVED seeing Transformers on the big screen and not this looks awesome as well.

      • now*

      • This film isn’t made with thirtysomethings in mind as the target audience. It’s to get thirtysomethings to take their kids to see it, then get a Turtles happy meal on the way home from Toys ‘R’ Us after buying a shell-load of Turtle toys and merchandise.

Didn’t you get the hint when it said “Nickelodeon movies” at the beginning? (^-^)

  24. I’ll be taking my 6 year old to this one – might be fun

  25. Not even a shout out for poor Ms. fox?

Why do I dislike this so much?

It seems cool… it tries to be cool. But it isn’t.

    The turtles look weird. Weird.
The movie seems intense enough but the camera angles are just over the top.

This movie is too over the top. I will have to watch this movie because I’m a turtles fan, what remains to be seen is if it’s in theatres or bluray.

    right now… bluray

    • I KNOW!!!! This movie, which is a whopping one minute and twenty-two seconds, is SOOOOOO over the top.

    • Yes. They do look weird.

    • You mean the giant MUTANT TURTLES actually look weird??? Well I am just shocked.

      • Yes, but the even look weird by mutant turtle standards.

        • So have you seen a real life mutant ninja turtle? If you have please show us pics. Cause the ninja turtles certainly look like turtles that have mutated to me.

          • Dude, they look weird.

They do. It’s maybe an opinion but still… They look… wrong? off? odd? weird.

            • They fell off the Mutant tree and hit every branch on the way down.

        • turtles by standards look weird themselves in normal regular real life turtle mode, and I’m pretty sure that weird looking creatures who have been mutated would look even weirder in not look like some that would role w/ toxy in tromaville…

      • Shocked? or shell-shocked?!

  27. My expectations for this are low, so i’m not seeing a hell of a lot here to get them any lower. Will go see it for nostalgia sake.

    • unbelievable

  28. Yeah I can’t wait until my son gets older so we can experience movies together. This will be a fun movie. There’s only so much you can do with giant turtles to begin with.

  29. Those turtle lips creep me out. Otherwise, looks interesting. I’m on the fence so far.
