‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Teaser Trailer: Are Heroes Created?

Published 8 months ago by , Updated April 3rd, 2014 at 4:26 pm,

Easily one of the most contentious film productions of the past year, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot has faced a steady stream of fan outrage – ever since it was first announced that divisive filmmaker Michael Bay would produce the project. Starting with the casting of Megan Fox as April O’Neil to reports that the titular heroes would simply be Ninja Turtles of extraterrestrial origin (not Mutant Teenagers), passionate fans of the original Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird comic series – as well as the subsequent animated shows – have been extremely outspoken about the modern remake’s repeated attempts to defile the beloved brand.

Throughout, Bay and director Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans) have reassured passionate Ninja Turtles lovers that the film will honor the source material, while also providing a new bar for TMNT live-action adventure. To their credit, after a laughable Halloween costume reveal once again sent fans into a fury, leaked images of the actual Turtle designs appeared online – to mostly positive response from casual moviegoers and die-hard Shell Heads alike.

Still, anyone on DeviantArt can update the look of the Turtles, and without seeing the characters in motion, the designs only go so far in providing an idea of what to expect from the feature film. Now, with only five months before the film’s release, we’re finally getting a look at Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the form of an official teaser trailer.

In addition, we now have an official synopsis for the TMNT reboot:

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.

Unsurprisingly, the footage is short on overt shots of the TMNT heroes – which will no doubt be featured more extensively in the first full trailer for the film. We get a few good looks at the more “realistic” Turtle designs, along with brief glimpses of the shadowy do-gooders in action, but the teaser spends the majority of its time setting up a new version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles backstory and world.

Interestingly, the footage is narrated by Eric Sachs/The Shredder (William Fichtner) who, based on his voiceover, indicates that he, along with April O’Neil’s father, created the Turtles (with Ooze) for the purpose of curbing unchecked criminals in New York City. Why a criminal mastermind like Shredder would want to fight crime is, of course, unclear at this point. It’s certainly likely that Shredder’s narration is unreliable and that he actually created the Turtles as weapons to gain an upper hand against competing crime organizations – until the heroes turned on their creator. Another possible explanation could see Shredder setting out with the intention of enforcing justice, only to become corrupted and power-hungry in the process.

Some fans will, without question, balk at the reveal that April’s father was also involved in creating the Turtles but, in terms of delivering the best movie possible, the choice helps provide a more meaningful reason for the reporter to become so obsessed with this particular story (and its heroes). A valiant investigator, willing to put her life in danger for “the truth,” works at surface level but connecting April’s father to Shredder and the Turtles provides a lot more room for human drama to go along with all the Ninja fighting. Plus, mysterious scientific experiments should also open-up the film’s core storyline – so that the filmmakers can explore plenty of fan-favorite characters and ideas in subsequent installments (see: The Amazing Spider-Man movie universe).

Despite all of the cartoonish elements, the trailer’s tone is actually pretty serious – and reaffirms Hollywood’s ongoing effort in providing every superhero franchise a “dark” and “gritty” reboot. That said, don’t expect Platinum Dunes and Nickelodeon Movies to pass up the opportunity to appeal to a whole new generation of Turtle fans – with characters like Michelangelo (not to mention Will Arnett’s Vernon Fenwick) running around, there’s sure to be plenty of humor (and Cowabunga) to go along with the shadowy Ninja action.

  1. Not bad, not bad at all. This could actually be good.

    • I totally agree, it actually took me by surprise. It was bad and at first I was a bit iffy on the turtles new design, but after seeing them in action and hearing mickey’s voice (so cool) I much more optimistic about this movie. Still wanna see more though, and would luv to see the final outcome of splinter. Another trailer please!

  2. I just wanna see Megan Fox on screen again.

  3. I loved TMNT when I was younger. Maybe I’ve outgrown it, I don’t know. But this trailer made me laugh. The “dark tone” attempt makes it more laughable. The voiceover and music made it even more laughable. Maybe that’s what they are going for? The 3-13 age range?

    • The beginning of the trailer should have clued you in on what demographic they were looking for – NICKELODEON Films says it all. But that doesn’t mean adults will not enjoy it. I think it will be a fun movie to take your kids to introduce them to the turtles (if they haven’t been introduced yet)

  4. Well, there’s my nightmare fuel for the next few weeks. Thanks, Michael Bay!

  5. I’m actually going to side with Kevin Eastman, the co-creator, when he said that this movie looks great and the special fx look great. If it comes from the co-creator then I have zero issues with it. this trumps all you crybabies out there. creators/co-creators>crybaby fanboys who live in their childhood.

To all you crybabies out there, if you showed this trailer to classroom full of 10 year olds you wouldn’t hear any b1tching. all you would hear is ooo’s and ahhh’s as the kids get amped for it. Also a little hint at the beginning of the trailer says it all – NICKELODEON.

    • That depends is this still a revenue stream for him? Or has he sold all rights?

    • Yea, George Lucas also created Star Wars and had hands on with the prequels…um…yea, that turned out well for the fans, huh?

no oroko saki is annoying. Wtf is Erich Sachs??!!

      • Yeah but at least Eastman did a good job writing the new TMNT series for IDW.

  6. Here’s the thing… The teaser… it looks good. For now…it has my interest. There is no way I’m not going to see this opening day..
However…Its jst…Bay…I trust the guy to find a way to somehow screw this up. Its the power of experience really.

  7. Woah, Uncanny Valley when Mikey removes his mask. Keep it on.

  8. WHAT??? No Master Splinter…?

  9. They hurry the next sequel like Transformers 2. TMNT 2: Revenge of the Shredder/Krang/Utrom (?). I don’t know do we even have aliens in this version even after the alien origin was written out?

  10. Sooo.. let me get this straight. The foot clan has automatic rifles, Shredder is Norman Osborn, The turtles are like mini hulks.. and could not easily fit through a door way more so down a sewer cover…. And Raphael just totaled a military jeep with momentum and his shell? Soooooo. yea.

  11. I love when people say “stop destroying my childhood” or ” Micheal Bay sucks” really original. First, no one cares about your childhood and you’re not entitled to claim the TMNT for yourself, annoying! Maybe its just me but I enjoy Michael Bay movies, I love over the top action and I think he does a really good job.

Second, why do people really want a direct translation from the original cartoon. I enjoyed it as a kid but to watch them now, they’re laughable and ridiculous. Movies are meant for the general population not just nerds!

I think the first trailer looked good, I cant wait for the full length trailer.

    • Man is it just me when you look at Michelangelo’s face it’s a strong resemblance to Shrek,
Why are the turtles so big they won’t fit in a sewer man hole but of course they are big enough to fit into movie probably.
Why the hell is Megan Fox associated with the Turtles.
Why did someone create the turtles and from what I can see Shredder knowing about it.
What made it cool is that the turtles were an accident and shredder didn’t know about them until they start taking down his soldiers and hindering his plans.
      WHY AM I SO ANGRY!

  12. I agree with Aaron; it IS lame to claim that this movie is going to suck * simply * because it has Michael Bay attached to it as a producer. It’s not only lame, it’s ridiculous and unfair.

    • Your comment is also ridiculous and unfair. You are hating on a movie you have barely seen 2 minutes of because of a name attached? This is what is wrong with society -.-

  13. These people who say dont ruin my childhood are talking about the so called ORIGINAL 1980s cartoon based off the comics that cameeee befooooe

  14. So far I like the teaser trailer, I think this my turn out to be a good movie beside what people are saying. So we the fans just have to wait and see how I does in the box office and critics say, and hopefully it turns out to be good.

  15. I want to see more to be honest.
It looks like it’s going to have a lot of action…which is something I want
    to see.

  16. Looks like Tokka wins, who looks better contest.
Micheal Bay should be retired, everything he touches makes me want to do physical harm to his person, its like he’s made it his mission to destroy franchises i loved as a child. Has holywood forgotten how to make anything original? hell if you want to reboot/remake something do the old c-rank horror movies.

  17. YEP…SPOILER…based on the look of raphael and michaelangelo with their noses lol the turtles will be genetically engineered using human and turtle DNA (ala jurassic park) and not start out as turtles at all but as it says in the trailer be “created” from scratch. Under 1987 series in this article at http://turtlepedia.wikia.com/wiki/Origin it states that TCRI (featured in the trailer) is used to merge animal and human DNA.

  18. Michael Bay is a brilliant businessman. He knows even if people hate it, they will watch a CGI 3D motion capture movie 5, 10, 15 times. That is why he is a successful film maker.

  19. i personally cannot wait for this movie!! I had no idea it was shredder narrating until now, i thought it was Splinter giving his sons a pep talk before a big fight. I love Michael Bay’s movies, i just hope the origin story will be kept simple, but then again the turtles are too awesome to be kept “simple”. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this! You’ll see me first in line at the store for the dvd!

    • So what your saying is that you can wait because you are going to skip the theatre and wait for the dvd

  20. Horrível, acabou com a imagem das verdadeiras Tartarugas Ninja HORRÍVEL HORRÍVEL HORRÍVEL!!Como permitiram isso????
