‘Ted’ Trailer & Images: Basically ‘Family Guy’ with a Teddy Bear

1 year ago by Kofi Outlaw

Seth MacFarlane is known for his irreverent animated sitcoms – Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, American Dad - which, in and of themselves, have created a love/hate divide amongst audiences. Hence why there is going to be a lot of curiosity surrounding MacFarlane’s feature film debut, Ted, the coming of age tale of a man (Mark Wahlberg) and his foul-mouthed teddy bear friend (voice of MacFarlane).

Today we have the red-band trailer for Ted to share, and it pretty much looks like a movie version of MacFarlane’s animated shows, mixing live actors with the eponymous CGI talking teddy bear.

Check out the red-band trailer, images and a poster for Ted:

The problem with this film is in the character of Ted himself – specifically the decision to have MacFarlane voice the character. Granted, MacFarlane has proven to be a versatile performer – stand-up comedy, singing, voice acting several characters on his shows – but in the hands of another performer, the character of Ted may have been brought to life on its own terms. As it stands now, Ted sounds like a composite of Peter, Brian and Stewie Griffin on Family Guy (all of whom are voiced by MacFarlane), and that is just very distracting.

Compounding the problem is the fact that this concept has been done before, several times. In a lot of ways Ted looks like a cruder version of Drop Dead Fred, only with the comedic stylings as any (or all) of MacFarlane’s animated shows. In faux mathematical terms, it means this movie is doubly derivative – and leading actors Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis are definitely hit or miss when it comes to comedy. A lot of this movie’s success will likely depend on the level of devotion that MacFarlane can muster from his fan base. What that level is, is anyone’s guess…

Wahlberg is not a comediac actor but he is good in comedies when the other lead actors are good; case in point last years THE OTHER GUYS with Will Ferrel. That was great because of Ferrel and not Wahlberg.

Wahlberg really should stick with what he is good at and has been a strong career move for him, namely solid action pieces like THE SHOOTER and THE ITALIAN JOB both of which are great flicks.

Sorry, The Italian Job was awful. A pale, lifeless imitation of the original that was improved in no way by bigger stunts or my high tech gadgetry. I do agree that Wahlberg should stick to what he is good at though and I’d be interested to find out what that is. I love movies and watch them daily and I have never been confronted with any evidence that Marky Mark is even competent as an actor, let alone good at any particular genre.
Kunis has charm though and a history in comedy, some good some bad but has the charisma to at least provide a little relief in scenes that would otherwise leave you cringing. Why not have a big crass bear strutting around, interfering and making fart jokes? However there is a wide selection of leading actors out there so I have no idea why they settled on Wahlberg.

Evidence that Mark Wahlberg can act:

        The Basketball Diaries
        Boogie Nights
        Three Kings
        The Departed
        The Lovely Bones
        The Fighter

That was funny, I watched it twice-BUT Nothing original here. I want to like it but I can’t ignore how many times it’s been done. (Most recently Paul, Wilfred) -I hope to see a Family Guy feature film some day.

So… you haven’t seen the movie yet are commenting on how good it will be… that makes sense.

I think this looks funny as hell. First, who cares if it has been done before – a lot of films have been done before – plenty of films about zombies, aliens, ghosts, war… And, I’d actually say this is different that Wilfred or Drop Dead Fred. Ted is a character not an imagination. Closer to Paul than either of those two.

I’m gonna be honest, from what it looks like; if you’re a Family Guy fan, than you will enjoy this movie. Just in the preview I can see Peter and Brian having the same white-trash conversation. But legit, I think MacFarlane knows what he is doing. He is using the same formula that has given him success in three TV shows. I mean he has been successful with everything he has spit out, even its the same old thing over and over. People enjoy it. Its funny. Its not everyone’s cup of tea, but for those of us that love this style of humor are probly going to fall on our backs laughing.

I agree with the guy who said Ted should have been voiced by a differant actor and not Seth. A differant voice actor would add more originality to the bear instead of Seth using the same over and over. He is very limited as a voice actor. From the looks of the trailer, I’m going to save my money and avoid it. It looks really awful.

Who cares what the critics think? He’s doing what he wants to do and just because some people who think their opinion matters makes no difference. It’s a million times easier to sit at a computer and write up some unprofessional biased drab then it is to actually do what Macfarlane has done. I wonder who’s career is better. This early review was terrible, no grasp of what actually goes into making something like this.
    So sick of these ‘Critics.’

I saw it recently – and though I’m the same age as Seth, I felt like I was too old for this movie. If you picked a number – let’s say the movie contains 50 jokes / comedic situations – I laughed once, chuckled twice, and thought the other 47 were just lame or so obvious as to not be funny. I didn’t like the TED character much, many times I thought “that’s Peter Griffin” but it doesn’t work here because TED hasn’t established his character to be Peter Griffin so the Teddy Bear saying that doesn’t make sense. I’m guessing if I were stoned I would have liked this movie more.

I love family guy and even more so American dad. However I’m worried that this will just be like watching a live version of peter and Brian. I like watching it on TV but seeing it done with live actors won’t make it anymore exciting or funny. It will be good but I know he’s got the ability to make an epic film in him still. This won’t be it.

Well said, it is very hard to watch because the voice is very much the same as on ” Family Guy” and ” American Dad”. I am a movie critic, I have seen tons of movies and this one is funny, creative and wroth while seeing. Some people think this movie is stupid because it has a Teddy bear but on reality it’s supper funny and entertaining. I give it five stars! Congratulations Ted the movie five stars from me!
