It wasn’t long after Seth MacFarlane’s surprise 2012 hit Ted left theatres that people were already talking about a sequel. The movie was a smash with audiences and critics alike (raking in nearly $400 million worldwide) and with MacFarlane’s star still on the rise, it only made sense to everyone involved to produce a follow-up – especially Universal, which declared its interest in a sequel about four months ago.

Mark Wahlberg had announced his planned involvement in Ted 2 (as it is known for now) about a month back, saying that he would likely shoot the Ted sequel after wrapping on Transformers 4.

In a interview with Anderson Cooper this week, Wahlberg confirmed not only that he and his irreverent stuffed pal will be back for another round, but also that MacFarlane is currently penning the script and a deal is in place.

“There is a Ted 2,” Wahlberg told the Anderson Live audience in responding to a Twitter question. “We’ve already locked a deal. They’re off writing now and I’ve never done a sequel before, but I have just so much confidence in Seth. He’s such a talented and funny guy.”

MacFarlane certainly has his detractors, but there’s no question that his legion of fans has continued to grow since the world was introduced to Ted. Not only that, but it seems that he’s becoming a trusted comedy commodity among the studios and the industry in general. He’s already gotten the green light to write, direct, produce and star in an original live-action comedy-western titled A Million Ways to Die in the West  and he landed the prestigious hosting gig for this year’s Academy Awards.

Wahlberg also revealed some news on that front, telling Cooper:

“Because Seth is hosting the Oscars, Ted and I will be appearing at the Oscars.”

We’re not sure if Wahlberg and Ted will be presenting an award or simply performing a humorous bit, but in any case, with their appearance at the Oscars and a second film on the way, it looks like we are going to see a lot more of this comedy duo in the near future.

There is no current release date for Ted 2, but the project expects to start shooting in late 2013 after the completion of Transformers 4 and A Million Ways to Die in the West.

  1. The first one was s****, why bother – must have made some money in the box office!!

    • $400 million. Did you not read the article?

      • Oh yeah. Harder Harder..

    • I actually liked “Ted”, probably because I’m a big fan of Family Guy and “Ted” is built off of the same type of humor Seth puts into the show (aside from the flashback segments)

        • Ted was one of the best ive seen. How seth maccfarlane can take a F*****g teddy bear and make him the main role in one of the best comedies is amazing.

    • Shut the hell up your s*** on top of that you spelled s*** wrong you dumbass ted was awesome i can’t wait for the 2nd one and you’re just a piece of s*** hater.

      • Agreed. Ted was one of the best ive seen. How seth maccfarlane can take a F*****g teddy bear and make him the main role in one of the best comedies is amazing.

        • When is ted 2 coming out

  2. Looking forward to the sequel. I laugh every time I watch Ted.

  3. This was one of those ” all the funniest scenes are in the trailer” movies. I was seriously dissapointed in this flick

  4. I enjoyed the first definitely looking forward to the sequel.

  5. The part in the film where Ted is talking about “Boston girls” is where I laughed the hardest in Ted. I expected not a whole lot going into this film, because I hate Family Guy, but the film was good and I think it should have a sequel. Looking forward to it.

  6. still need to see this :) I’ve heard good things and I like family guy alot so it should be right up my alley.

  7. I found the first one funny. I’m looking forward tot he 2nd one.

Is Sam J. Jones returning, or are they going to move on to another 80′s actor like Carl Weathers?

  8. Ted was really funny and I enjoyed it lots, but a sequal? Really?

Can we not just have one off movies any more, does everything have to be turned into a franchise?

    • Totally agree with u.. this movie should of stayed at one n leave it be

      • It kind of said all it had to, like The Hangover

They should just give McFarlene the money to make something new, The Lance Armstrong Story? I would find it quite funny to see him win the Tour De France on a motorbike haha

        • or a moped lol

          • souped up moped I should say :D

            • or suped up? Unless you like your moped with croutons haha

              • Haha thanks for the correction on the spelling. Wasn’t thinking.

                • Looks like JJ Abrams is going to be Seth to it lol

                  • Who’s to say we still can’t get a spoof on it? Or at least a funny moment in Ted 2? :D

    • @ DJ Vader and Dr. Noisewater: I agree that every movie doesn’t need a sequel but at the same time I am glad there are sequels if the first movie is successful and the ideas presented in the second one are not just a remake of the 1st like Hangover 2. That was one of the worst films I have ever seen. I think Seth is more creative than the producers of the Hangover ‘franchise’.

  9. f yeah!! family guy movie number 2 =D cause ted is pretty much family guy if u think about it

  10. Ted is getting a sequel? how fricking brotastic

  11. Ted II: Rise of the Thunderf$&kers

  12. YAY !…Jump mode !

  13. I was actually embarrassed by how much I laughed in the cinema watching the first one but having said that I hope it’s not just going to be a typical roles reversed sequel.

    • Exactly what do you mean by that? Ted as the mature, serious part in their bromance, or something like that?

  14. WheN is it comming to theaters

    • Well in the writing they said 2013 after transformers sometime but if you look on the internet you see 2014 ???

  15. Ted was probably the best movie that came out in 2012, by far. And hopefully Ted 2 will be the best movie to come out in 2013

    • Really? the BEST movie? is Ted the only movie you watched in 2012? did you not see The Grey or Avengers? Django, Silver Linings, Les Mis, Hungergames, The Dark Knight Rises, Argo, Moonrise Kingdom, (i can keep going) are all better than Ted, sure maybe one of the best comedy movies in 2012, but thats it. Next time, before stating the best movie in 2012, watch other movies that came out in 2012

      • sure, those movies were good, but were also over-rated a little. Plus, those movies are all different genres. Ted was an amazing comedy. The others you named were mostly action and drama. Cant wait for Ted 2

      • I have to agree, most of the movies were overrated. Django, Silver Linings & Avengers top the list.

  16. I liked Ted. I would have LOVED Ted if there weren’t the 9/11 jokes and so much use of the F-word. I’m not a prig- I know there is a certain sale-factor for using that language, but may I recommend that they use less of it in Ted 2-maybe more of a PG version such as Family Guy? A Stewie/Brian relationship would be great!

    • Family guy being PG? you have to understand that Seth has a really crude sense of humor, that is what gives Ted and Family guy and the other series that he makes funny.

  17. After this sequel if you guys don’t decide to do another, you guys should bring it to tv and make it a series!! I’m sure that’ll be original and hilarious!!

  18. is flash gordon going to be in Ted 2

  19. I wish Ted 2 was coming out this August, because me and the friend’s I saw Ted with thought it was brilliant, and it would be good if we could have seen the sequel this year.

  20. Harder!! harder!!

  21. In my opinion “ted” was actually better than i expected, but i don’t know if they should make a sequel because if i’m correct the story has already ended…. i believe it’ll be kind of pointless.

  22. I looved the movie it was awesome and halarious! Shortly after renting this I plan on buying it can’t wait to see then more than buy it too!
