I've been a fan of Smallville since episode 1 season 1. I had my most exciting and most disappointed moments with the show but it is interesting to read views of people who have watched and enjoyed the show, especially this season without any preconcieved notions and without the participation in online cult fandoms that cement a certain opinion in your head and you close your eyes to the rest, no matter how awesome it is.

This season has beyond doubt been great. The good old Superman mythology worked wonders for the ratings. Fans are raving about the freshness of the show. Clark Kent is no longer a whiny teenager clung to his Lana fantasies and no longer dependent on Chloe's hacking skills to solve problems for him. Clark as a journalist and a hero-in-the-making in an excellent step and so enjoyable. Tom is looking so comfortable and interested this year whereas last year in some scenes he actually looked bored.

Durance is magic. I fell in love with Lois Lane since Crusade, the first episode she appeared in and I can keep raving about how awesome she has been this season. Lois had always been sidelined on this show in the honor of either Lana or Chloe, but thankfully now they are giving her the rightful place as leading lady and boy has she done an amazing job. Watch episodes like Committed, Bloodline and Bride, her acting is awesome.

Can't wait to see where Lois/Clark go from here. The beginning of their lovestory is being handled beautifully.

Oh, and I can't wait for Legion. It's going to be one great episode!

I think you're right Layla. Clark has come into his own. I like Supergirl as well. What makes this show a favorite with the Superman fans is that they modernize the Superman World. For example, The Phantom Zone in the comics seem like Disneyworld in comparison to what the CW has done. I also like how they handled Brainac, who I think is a great villain.

Thanks for the great feedback about "SV". I've been a fan since Season 1, Episode 1, so it's great to hear about all these new fans who just started tuning in. It's clear that "SV" may be an aging show, but it can still deliver the goods.

I have to agree that the Lois Lane/Clark Kent romance has been a highlight of this year. But I think the BEST part has been Clark Kent. He's proactive and just all 'round awesome. In S8, I see the man who would be Superman & that's something that was missing a bit from S5-S7. I'm glad that they have Clark back on track & I'm sure we can chalk that up to Lana Lang being out of the picture.

No offense to Kristin Kreuk, who seems like a lovely person, but Lana really has been the weakest link in this series for quite awhile. I'm looking forward to her arc being wrapped up in the next four episodes.

I think Lana's return is only temporary. Which is good enough for me. I wisk KK the best. I think SV is moving onto another level. The producers are notciing the it helps having characters from the DC Universe. I can't waith for the Legion Of Super Heroes episode. I am a big fan of LOSH. I also would like to see SV continue the Supergirl story of finding Kandor (the shrunken city of Krypton). We will see.

Thanks so much for posting a positive blog about Smallville. I have been watching the show from the beginning, and I think there is a new energy, and renewed inspiration in this season. I watch the show for Clark, and have NO interest in the tiresome and incessant shipping nonsense that seems to plague the SV community (which is the #1 reason for the complainers and ranters). And from the point of view of a Clark fan, this season has been really enjoyable so far.

I do worry about the show experiancing a setback with the return of Lana. No offense to the lovely Kristin Kreuk, but Lana just feels like a character that hit the wall about 2-3 seasons ago. But I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude, and hoping for the best.

Tom Welling has been terrific this season, and Clark Kent is starting to seem more and more like Superman to me. And thats been the reason I've watched for 7+ years, and thats the reason I'll be tuning in on 1/15.

@Tasha,

Yeah, I get what you're saying. But honestly, Superman die hards (usually comics fans) have a general dislike towards the show already for how many liberties its taken, so offing Lana isn't that big a deal, especially if people are tired of her. Most comics fans don't have very high expectations for the show when it comes to the source material. They know Smallville pretty much does whatever it wants, so nobody gets too upset. :-)

:) i understand what you're saying, but the show is based on Superman (comics, etc..). So they do have to keep the important characters alive. It's true that they don't follow the story of Superman, but they do have to at least keep their characters alive. I'm not a huge fan of the comics, but there are other people who are so the people who have produced Smallville have to keep the fans in mind and at least try to follow Superman story line. Does that make sense? (I'm not tryin to start anything either, just sayin.....)

@Tasha...

I don't know why they couldn't just kill Lana, so what if she was in one of the movies? She's also a major character in the comics. If you're suggesting that they couldn't do it because it wouldn't follow the comics or movies, I think that's ridiculous. Smallville hasn't followed much of any of the Superman lore so far....they're doing their own thing. (Not trying to start anything)

I think this season is the best yet!! Finally Clark is starting to figure out that he should use his powers to help everyone OUTSIDE of Smallville too. For those who don't know, they can't just kill Lana because she is in the one of the Superman movies. But I do agree with most that they should just get rid of her on the show, so Clark and Lois can have their turn! Also I think Chloe is the best sidekick EVER!!

I too mainlined Smallville just before Season 6, and am hopelessly and reluctantly addicted. I fell in love with the Clark and Chloe relationship. I haven't seen such a beautiful, mostly-chaste friendship between a male and a female been portrayed so well since Mulder and Scully. Clark and Chloe are the only reason I watch. I'm disappointed with this year because they insist on continuing the soul-sucking Chloe and Jimmy relationship. Despite Lois' sudden and jarring affections towards Clark after what the producers have admitted was written as a sibling relationship for four years, I'm holding out hope that Clark and Chloe will realize that they deserve only each other, and a new chapter of Superman will be written.

Bkwum1, you're right. I can see being tired of this series after watching it for so long. Even watching the DVDs, I was able to fast forward over some tedious parts. I agree with you in regards to Lois/Clark relationship. However on her end she's looking for something to work, Aquaman didn't commit, nor Green Arrow. She probably feels she'll never meet Mr. Right. I can't see why Clark is interested in her? I too can't wait for the Legion episode. I'm a big fan of the Legion Of Super Heroes. I'm surprised that LOSH has not caught on . It would make a great series.

Maybe those who have watched all of the show in a short period of time have a different viewpoint than I, someone who has been slogging through this for 8 years. (Less time for the anger to build up? For expectations to be dashed? Avoided believing lies told by the producers about certain plots being a dead horse --Clana--only for it to reappear like the undead? Too much time to dwell on Lois issues?) I can understand how just discovering something can make you wish for it to keep going on and on, but it's hard to relate. I also have big complaints about how poorly the Clark/Lois romance has been handled. Time to stop with the random guest stars announcing they have a connection and time to start showing it. I was a big fan of the 90's Lois&Clark. Not so much some of the campy villians but that they took the time to show why Clark was impressed with Lois and why she grew to rely on him and then to build up their partnership. On Smallville after 4 years they are still classified as barely friends and Clark doesn't seem to be slipping away from her as ditching her to go get the job done. Sure there was an almost kiss and for some unknown reason Lois is now pinning for him (and in love already???) but apparently all the reasons why this happened took place in a magical and wonderful show known as Offscreenville. (It's also the place that explained how Clark got hired by the DP with no experience of qualifications) Sorry, I almost started getting caught up in a rant. I will say that Legion looks awesome. There, I ended on a positive note.

Like many of the listers, I too picked up the series and watch the entire shop in about 2-3 months. I'm currently watching the present show. What I'm happy about is the progression Smallville has gone through. Like in life, things happen to us in our environment that eventually affect us as we mature. I think the writers are doing a superb job of molding CK into the Superman we care and love. Unfortunately (as in the comics) CK & Lana are not destined for one another--it's ashame because they both have great chemistry together. At first I didn't care for the lois Lane character, But Erica Durrance has done a great job of making Lois Lane her own persona (and she gets hotter as the seasons fly by). I hope there is a season 9, 10. There is so much more history to tell.

I just get the impression that no, Lex, Michael Rosenbaum Lex, is not coming back except for maybe voice over work (He doesn't want to shave his head)and so all we are getting is jerked around again. I hate the idea that the same thing will happen next season (if there is one) but this time with reported sightings of the Red/Blue Blur or a shot of old stock footage of Clark in the Fortress. Smallville is an aging show. That means it is becoming very expensive just to pay the cast and crew. The budget has already been slashed. They couldn't come up with enough money to keep MR, and they are already saying they have ways of doing 9 without Clark. I don't want that, but if a season 9 comes, I wouldn't be surprised. Plus while the ratings are among the highest on the CW, the ratings are NOT reaching the target demo that they are promising their advertisers. Smallville will be around if the CW can get if back cheap (relatively) and experience with this show does not inspire me with confidence. So I say let this show go out with some dignity. If a season 9 happens there is nothing to keep them from just stalling some more and ask for number 10.

With certain major cast departures from season 1 with whitney, then with pete, jason, jonathan kent, martha, kara, lex, lana, and lionel, i feel that jonathan lionel lana and whitneys departures are superb the way they are portrayed and done, but the worst depature was pete ross character, what on earth were they doin, fair enough he was leaving but they shoulda come up with a better storyline than that, lana, lex and martha have free reign to return whenever, hopefully lana doesnt return much more tho lol, i think at the end of this season, lex wil reurn right at the very end and surprise clark, on a cliffhanger that would be awsome, i also hear that the justice league will reaapear again, i hope the flash is in this one along with aquaman green arrow and maybe cyborg, also an anti justice league is coming too created by tess. i hope tom welling signs contract extention, just give it till season 10 then maybe make a film?

ah, lol. Now it makes sense :)

Ya, I hear the biggest obstacle is that Mr. Welling's contract ends after this season and that he wasn't too interested in going forward with another.

But with the good ratings and hype surrouding alot of what's going on this season, maybe they'll throw big money at him.

bkwurm, do you mean not going to ‘return’?

Ha! I didn't mean resign as in leave, but re-sign, as in sign another contract.
