Well it’s not simply a scale of 1 to 10, it’s more to do with how they make the person react. Either way, I think it has more to do with all of the coincidences that made the film’s premise possible and just how Penn’s character came off it was hard to sympathize.

But again, that’s my opinion. I didn’t like the film, so sue me, contact my lawyer, we’ll take it to court.

Definitely has a more supernatural feel to it than the others, but perhaps they will keep it down to earth and let the person’s craziness creep you out more than a supernatural aspect?? Who knows, we’ll have to wait for a trailer, lol.

No offense bro, but that kind of sentiment is why Hollywood (and the NYC Lit industry) feels compelled to crank out so many crap stories all the time. Because people can’t deal with the bad guy not getting a bullet in the end, not to mention questioning who or what constitutes a “bad guy.”

If you were Sean Penn’s character, how would you have handled your daughter being brutally murdered in your own childhood neighborhood? Would you have run to the cops, or gotten “justice” for yourself? And if you chose the latter, would that have made you a “bad guy?”

That’s the great thing about Mystic River. It’s not black and white but filled with a moral grayness that extends to EVERY SINGLE ONE of the characters in it. Even Penn’s character’s wife. Brilliant.

(And IMO, there is no way to “over dramatize” a parent’s reaction to the the death of their child. That word seems very misapplied in that situation.)

I click post too fast. Anyone read the book? This sounds like a really out there story compared to how real Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone’s were.

I dunno about Mystic River. I like the story of Gone Baby Gone better as far as the writer goes, and I like Gran Torino a lot more as far as directing goes.

It might be because I don’t like Sean Penn or Kevin Bacon much at all, except for Milk and Sleepers, but Mystic River did get better after the first couple times watching it and some moments are really really well done. Maybe I’m not Bostonian enough.

I forgot what exactly he did, but I just remembered it seemed more like a playful thing than anything else. If I was a cop and I saw someone there that was a suspect in a murder investigation I wouldn’t gesture anything to him. Not sure if it should be considered a “game” of cops and robbers. It’s more like someone has done something and justice needs to be served.

But anyway, like I said, it’s just my opinion anyhow, and the main thing I didn’t really like was all of the coincidences that made the movie possible.

Dillons chracter didnt nod at Penn at the end.
He fashioned his finger into a gun reminding Penn of the games of cops and robbers they used to play .
It was Dillons way of telling Penn that he was coming after him soon.
Eastwood even said in subsequent interviews that it was his intent to hint at what was coming next .

And what part of “I don’t care what anyone says” did you two not understand? lol just kidding, I know I’m in th minority, I just didn’t “dig” the story and the overly dramatic scenes. Movies and novels tend to over dramatize things, which usually looks good on film and on paper, but if you look at how things happen in real life, they simply don’t happen that way. But mainly what I didn’t like was how the whole central premise of the plot was around a big coincidence. I hate the typical movie coincidences. And how the cop at the end knows Penn’s character is guilty yet he just nods at him at the end like he’s giving his respect or like it’s all ok, blah blah blah. If it ended with a bullet between his eyes that would have been better for me. But that’s just my opinion. If I’ve described anything of the plot wrong, I probably just don’t remember it that well, but I know how I felt about it after watching it. And strangely my sister who typically likes these types of movies that I hate also hated this one, which is weird…

Anyway, enough with hijacking this thing about Shutter Island, lol.

I’m with my fellow SR writer:) – that scene where Sean Penn finds out his daughter’s dead is one of the most powerful scenes EVER.

Eastwood crafted such a mature, meaningful, emotional, and powerful film – and the acting was out of this world from all involved.
