Rumor Patrol: Taylor Swift as Supergirl? [Updated]

Update: Thank goodness. This rumor is finally getting debunked. See Post.

Our friends over at Latino Review have correctly dubbed this following rumor as the “stupid news of the day.” They heard from the super-reliable sources over at Hollyscoop (sarcasm alert!) that young pop music sensation Taylor Swift is being considered for the role of Supergirl.

The Supergirl project that has sparked this rumor is reportedly called Supergirl! The Love Story and that sound – like the crackle of distant thunder – you just heard was the collective sound of thousands of people across the world slapping their foreheads.

Oh Kanye West, why didn’t you save your ridiculous outburst for the moment when we would truly need it?

Here is what Hollyscoop managed to get out of somebody, somewhere, somewhen, who is somehow involved with this Supergirl project:

Hollywood is short of female heroes and the time is right for a new Supergirl. A number of young stars are being mentioned for the title role in a Supergirl movie and possible TV spin-off and Taylor is top of that list. She has all the right elements to be a positive role model to young girls.”

Thanks unnamed Hollywood source! Nothing about what you just said sounds official at all!

Latino Review, it should be noted, is just as skeptical about all this as we here at Screen Rant are – so why report it? Because it has the ring of one of those crazy rumors that might actually come true. Hopefully not (by all that’s holy!) but, at the same time, possible.

taylor_swiftNo more discussion, let’s tear into this rumor, shall we?

  • Supergirl! The Love Story is a terrible title. Terrible. Are they trying to have guys avoid this film like the plague?
  • Can Taylor Swift even act? She’s in an upcoming movie (Valentine’s Day) and hosted SNL, but that’s not much to go on…
  • What about this girl’s lanky frame looks “super?” What, is her boyfriend Taylor Lautner (New Moon) going to help her beef up for the role?
  • How would this casting NOT be exploitative of Swift’s current 15 min as America’s put-upon pop sweetheart.
  • How could this film go into production when a Superman film can’t even get made?
  • Would this film have any connection to the Superman movie universe?
  • No, really, where is Kanye when you actually need him???

There was a Supergirl film released back in 1984, starring Helen Slater (who now does TV bit roles, including a 2007 stint on Smallville), but that film was a disaster. So far, Supergirl! The Love Story is sounding like a repeat of history – and if Taylor Swift ever suits up for it you can count me out. I could rant all day on why I don’t care for the girl – as a so-called “artist” or even as America’s inexplicable fixation of the moment. But hey, why be a hater?

Let’s just all take a minute and wait and see if this rumor gets slayed (as it should). Sorry if it ruined your day. If it makes you feel better: toss us the names of some actresses that would be better suited for a role as Supergirl.

Update: io9 has a source close to Taylor Swift’s camp and the word from that end is that “nothing is planned” for Swift to star as Supergirl. Reportedly this is all just the lounge-talk of Hollywood suits (at best). We’ll keep you updated.

No word on when Supergirl! The Love Story would be in theaters.

  1. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  2. Is Rupaul unavailable for the role? Seems like a natural fit…

  3. I think it’d be really cool to have Blake Lively step into this role.

    Ba-zinga

  4. i would rather see torrie wilson or stacy kiebler as super girl oh yea but then again i doubt they can act

  5. If we are being for real here, I’ll throw Scarlett Johansson in the mix to play Kara.

  6. i say if she can act go foe it if not blake lively or maybe hayden panatire but shes short. hillary duff might be good. other then that can’t hink of any.

  7. If you have to have a pop singer: Gwen Stefani.

    :D

  8. kirsty alley

  9. Laura Vandervoot? She played Kara/Supergirl on Smallville. I liked her in the role even if they wasted her presence on the show.

  10. I wouldn’t mind seeing Taylor Swift dress up like Supergirl, but the movie sounds really dumb. Love Story? No thanks! I’m doubting this is true because…
    1. I doubt Taylor Swift would even say yes to this
    2. I doubt DC Comics would even say yes to this
There’s no need for a Supergirl movie right now. This is as true as when we heard Megan Fox would be playing Wonder Woman… Hopefully.

  11. If Superman and Wonder Woman can’t get films made, Supergirl can’t too.

  12. “Can Taylor Swift even act? She’s in an upcoming movie (Valentine’s Day) and hosted SNL, but that’s not much to go on…”

She was also in an episode of CSI. Her acting was fine.

I honestly don’t think this rumor is true though, there really is no reason to make a Supergirl film without first rebooting the Superman franchise.

  13. I don’t think we should find out if someone can act in a role like this. She needs to prove herself first.

  14. I think if there were really serious about a SuperGirl film, these two might actually do the job well, they’re both pretty decent actresses and kind of look the part: Kristen Bell or Amber Heard. Or they could just get the girl from Kick-Ass, that could be good too.

  15. Her role in Valentines Day consists of her being a ditsy teenager that makes out with Taylor lautner from Twilight. I just cannot see her being a good actress in a role like Supergirl. Plus what is the reason to have Supergirl a love story????

  16. I think she is kinda funny looking!

Supergirl just doesnt work, look what happened on Smallville, they got a gorgeous actress in but had no idea what to do with the character and shelved her after one season.

And I actually own the Supergirl movie on DVD, am I slightly ashamed? Yes. Have I watched it? Yes. Do I like it? Yes.

  17. Whilst seeing Taylor Swift in lycra and a short skirt might be appealing… there’s no reason to make a Supergirl movie, least of all one with such an appalling title.

  18. I’m so tired of musicians (or so-called musicians) thinking they can just ACT! It takes years of training and multiple butt-kisses in Hollywood. I guess Taylor’s got one of those covered.

  19. Ohhhh….Helen Slater!

  20. Taylor Swift seems like a good choice for the role if the movie ever comes about which i find difficult to believe since theres no word on another Superman film being made. I hope they make it despite 1984′s Supergirl film was terrible even when Helen Slater was perfect in the role. Not even Christopher Reeve could save that film if he agreed to be in it as rumored. Besides Taylor Swift, i would like to see Laura Vandervoort take the role despite being on Smallville, who cares though. If Taylor Swift wants to, id say give her a chance and think of her as a unkown and she might surprise us. Just don’t set that doushebag Kanye West as a villain in it, LOL.

  21. PARIS HILTON FTW!!!!!!!

  22. What??? I like Taylor Swift, but as a singer, why cast a singer for a movie???

And BTW, I know you guys hate to give any credit to Country Music, but she was a break out in Country first, then her songs get “dumbified” to be played on the pop stations…

  23. She’s a F#$%$^^ hack… Talentless…she writes tweeny bopper pop..nothing more..this is just a wild rumor..will never happen..

  24. Actually, she writes and performs all of her own songs, that’s more than most music “artists” can say…

Of course she writes tweeny stuff, you realize she was like 16 when she got into the music scene right? You think she’s going to write topics relevant to 40 year-olds?? lol

Maybe you’ve been writing songs since you were 10-15 years old too, but I know I haven’t, so I’m not about to start insulting her until I can do better…

  25. D’uh Ken no really? 16? I DID NOT KNOW THAT!! ** enter sarcasm**

ooohhh she writes and performs all her own crap..that’s inspirational..thanks for sharing that..I feel enlightened now about TS..she is a prodigy..my mistake..It’s nice to see as a guy in his probably mid 20′s Ken you are drawn to tweeny stuff…Have you got your Twilight: New Moon calender for CHristmas Ken LOL!!

  26. Um, no I just don’t go around talking crap about someone unless I can do better myself. I mean, I take it you’re a song writer with millions of records sold under your belt, so good for you, make fun of someone else all you want, I’m just saying despite me not really liking a lot of her songs I’m not going to put her down until I actually got some qualifications under my belt.

I’d hate to be a complete douche bag and talk down about someone just because. I mean, I know you’re not doing that since you’re a songwriter and performer yourself and all. Don’t think I am trying to make any statement about you on that regard, just saying in general…

Kind of funny though, you seem like you have a chip on your shoulder about her, what happened, you asked her out and she laughed at you or what? :-D

  27. Anyway, I don’t know how to judge music since it’s all subjective, well, everything is, but I really am not THAT into music that I can start talking about it like I like to about movies, but I don’t thinnk it’s a good idea to cast a music star for the leading role for a movie. Well, unless it’s Ninja Assassin because that movie was going to be ridiculously stupid regardless…

  28. Arguing about this piece of ‘news’ is pointless, if Warners and DC cannot get a Superman movie off the ground, and he is the greatest and most famous superhero of all time, then his lesser known cousin Kara isnt going to be taking flight either!

  29. i would love 2 see her in that skimpy costume :P n i dont think she can act tbh ahe looks ok in da valintines day trailer
