Taylor Lautner starring in Tracers Taylor Lautner to Display His Parkour Skills in Tracers

If there is one good thing to say about Taylor Lautner as an actor (pause for inevitable barrage of jokes and insults), it’s that he does have significant athletic ability, which could potentially translate into a solid career as an action star. Sure, Lautner’s first post-Twilight attempt at action stardom (last year’s Abduction, remember that?) resulted in critical disaster, but as they say, “If at first you don’t succeed…”

Taylor Lautner will get another chance to prove his action skills by headlining Tracers, a new film from FilmNation Entertainment; the film will also see the young star enter into the world parkour, the free-style movement discipline first developed in France.

For those who don’t know, Taylor Lautner has been a martial arts star since young age, has won several junior world championships and earned a black belt at age eight(!). Aside from that impressive resume, he’s been pretty athletic all of his life – hence that body Twilight tweens (and their moms) swoon over. Aside from sounding like president of the TL fan club, I say all that to say: Tracers will be an interesting project to see Lautner in.

The title is derived from the slang-term for those who practice parkour: Check out the official press release for more on the movie’s plot:

FilmNation Entertainment will introduce the action thriller TRACERS to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. From the producers of Twilight and Dear John, TRACERS will star Taylor Lautner (The Twilight SagaAbduction) and will be directed by Daniel Benmayor (Bruc, the Manhunt). Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill Entertainment will produce. WME will handle sales in the US.

New York City bicycle messenger, Cam (Lautner) is the hottest thing on two wheels, but is in debt to an organized crime gang.  When he crashes his bike into a sexy stranger, Nikki, Cam is immediately seduced by her and the thrill of the world of parkour.

Parkour in the film 'District 13: Ultimatum'

Basically, it’s your standard Boy is in danger, boy meets girl, boy and girl have to get out of danger, scenario; the draw will be the scenes of parkour-style action that director Daniel Benmayor will be offering to audiences. Parkour has been an impressive element in certain action films of the last few years: hardcore fans will certainly reference the District 13 franchise, which was released in France and has a cult-following in the States; while casual moviegoers will recall the impressive parkour chase sequence opening to Casino Royale.

Done right, Tracers could be both a great doorway into parkour for a wider moviegoing audience, while also establishing Lautner as a star in the action genre. Of course, the movie has to actually be good - and has to wow those who are immediately put-off by the thought of seeing a Taylor Lautner movie. With FilmNation Entertainment putting out some lackluster films (the recently-released The Raven or the upcoming House at the End of the Street), and Benmayor’s lacks of directorial experience (this is his third film), it’s hard not to be concerned about the quality of Tracers. Maybe a good trailer will change that.

We’ll keep you updated on Tracers as the movie nears its Cannes Film Festival debut.

  1. *Michael Scott voice*

  2. I’ve got to think the over/under on how many more films Lautner will headline before Hollywood is done with him has to be 3.
After that I sense a strong straight to video career.
I know, I know. I’m a big ole’ hypocrite for reading and commenting on someone or something that I don’t like.
    It’s a slow day. ;)

      • I’m wondering why this guy gets any work. What does it take to be an actor chops it abs? Cause if this guys acting chops were abs, he would have a keg not a six pack.
And I think your three film theory is a film too generous.

    • “I know, I know. I’m a big ole’ hypocrite for reading and commenting on someone or something that I don’t like.”

You’re not. Nothing wrong with commenting. It’s an accurate prediction because it happens….

    • Taylor is actually a pretty good actor and seems like a good guy. He is only 21 years old! Everyone is so quick to bash him because of the Twlight thing, but at least see the previews first. It could be a cool movie.

  3. “If at first you don’t succeed…”

    Don’t come back home.

  4. I bet most teenage boys would love to see Lautner take a running jump off a cliff. ^-^

    • Good one!

  5. I’m so … excited (sarcasm)

  6. I won’t be seeing this in theaters, but I’ll check out the blu-ray at redbox, parkour is cool.

    • Im sure the people who are true Free Runners are gonna be pissed.

  7. Unfortunately his ultimate failure at the big screen will mean he’ll be turning up all over sci fi, wb, and other cable shows.

    • Holy crap. WE MUST SUPPORT THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. I think kofi has a man crush.

  9. It would have been nice if Yamakasi was referenced too. That film introduced me to parkour 8 years before D13 came out (and was also by Luc Besson BTW).

Anyway, I don’t mind that TL is in it but I’m curious to know how Hollywood will Americanise this one. I’m hoping they don’t ruin it.

  10. Athletic ability is totally not the coolest thing about most great action movie stars.

While a few of ‘em seriously impress based on pure athletic ability alone (Donnie Yen, Bruce Lee), they were also given distinct characters to play, as well as actually *good* scripts.

Look at Liam Neeson. The man could probably sell any action flick. But it’s not because of his abs. He’s a damn good actor. More importantly, he’s cool.

If Lautner wants a good action career, he’s got to actually get into, yknow, *good* movies. If all he does is straight-to-DVD stuff, then that’s where he’ll go.

    • Not to mention he needs to lose the fem-voice. Those trailers of Abduction where he TRIED to sound tough made me literally laugh out loud.

  11. At the moment he’s got the “twihards” clinging to his every word. As soon as that’s blown over Hollywood will get bored of his abs and realize he can’t act. Then its probably reality tv for Lautner!

  12. Can they get a stunt double for his face? The kid looks like an Arkansas Razorback mascot.

  13. funniest description of this film I’ve read so far: “Taylor Lautner will star in Tracers, about a bike messenger who discovers the “thrill of the world of shirtless parkour.”

Gotta admit that SOUNDS about up his alley.

  14. Wow, that sounds stupid! Not because of Taylor or anything, just the plot description sounds so supid!! :-P

  15. I like Taylor! Abduction was better than I thought it would be. He was smooth and the action scenes! I am excited about this film.

  16. A lot of girls were screaming if he would almost take his shirt off in the Twlight movies, I think that is why the guys are so irriatated. He has got the teeny booper thing, but come on keep it real he is a pretty good actor and hot for a guy his age. Imagine when he is 25.

    • Knock Knock. Is there anyone at home?

  17. Terrible Terrible actor. Already a has been. Hello Syfy, Lifetime. So what he has abs. That is all he has. No charm, no excitement, no leading man. I have never understood why everyone thought he was going to be a big star. Base on what. Twilight? Where were all of those female fans this summer when that god awful Abduction was in theaters last summer. He is not even good looking. Yeah straight to DVD and then into the Abyss.

  18. I think the vampire guy was much more annoying. Taylor Lautner is okay. I don’t see why everyones bashing him. This movie could be cool. Wait till it comes out to judge it.

  19. PArkour is cool!

  20. I think a lot of people will be eating their words after he gets a feel for what he wants to do. He is actually a great actor with range but he just hasn’t found that special part yet. Tracers sound like it could be the one. Abduction could have been good with a better script, and directed differently with a few differ supporting actors. He is young & he will find something that will show case his skills as an actor.

some people get good movies handed to them even tho they aren’t that good an actor for examp: co-stars

  21. The movie “Tracers” is being filmed on my block. Should I be excited about this? Not with the way the production personnel have conducted themselves. When we were first informed about the filming I didn’t foresee a problem. I was told that they would be setting up some lights in my front yard and that a few parking spots would be taken. Now let me tell you what the couple of parking spots actually means in movie language. We have not been able to park in front of our house for the past 4 days (for no apparent reason since they haven’t started filming or setting up). And starting today two blocks in each direction have no parking (or you will be towed) signs. Not a big deal you say, it is for a neighborhood with very limited public transportation and a lot of cars. Many people move to this neighborhood for the readily available street parking and no street cleaning regulation. Now I contacted Riley the woman who initially came by to tell us about the movie. Each time she has told me she will contact their parking people to figure out the situation and each time nothing was done to help us, not to mention how rude the staff was when we attempted to stop in front of our house to unload the groceries. After all this will I watch the movie no way! I encourage you to contact Riley and tell her that it is unacceptable for the movie crew to disregard and inconvenience the residents of the neighborhood. Please contact me for her direct contact.

  22. I think this looks promising – he’s certainly in his element, and is reportedly a really nice, hardworking guy. Certainly comes across better than the rest of the Twilight cast…so good luck to him. It’ll be interesting to see him in something now he’s older, and working with a smoother script (Breaking Dawn’s was the clunkiest script ever – fair play to the actors for doing their best with it!)

Hope this goes down well and we see more of him.

  23. I love you taylor lautner

  24. TL has good acting and action potential. Hopefully he’ll get some roles that will showcase his abilities.
