It seems like Canadian actor Taylor Kitsch may become the next Sam Worthington. With moviegoers only really knowing him from his portrayal of the mishandled Gambit character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, he’s already lined up a leading role in Disney’s John Carter of Mars trilogy of big budget epics and now he’s set to star in Peter Berg’s Battleship.

According to THR’s Heat Vision blog, Taylor Kitsch is stepping into the lead role as a Naval commander in the why-even-call-it-Battleship adaptation of the famous board game, taking over for Jeremy Renner who was in talks for the role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

Kitsch’s character is described in the report as being “wildly spirited” and “a great seaman but a lousy politician” and this will give him another chance to fight aliens, this time on our own planet.

From what we know about the Battleship so far, alien spaceships land in our oceans and stay there because one of them is damaged, setting the scene for some good ol’ naval warfare action. The film will show both our perspective and that of the aliens who are called The Regents and are described as black creatures whose legs spread out like water spiders.

The aliens aren’t here to attack us but are reportedly searching for a power source in the ocean. Of course, that means we fight them. As we get more details and casting announcements, we’ll let you know.

What do you think of Kitsch as a Naval commander, fighting off the alien invasion? If you like the idea of a Battleship movie or especially if you do not, then you absolutely must read about our 7 ridiculous toy-based movies.

Lucky for Fox Studios, they have him contracted for two more X-Men movies and by the time they have a movie for him to star in, he’ll likely be a big name star.

Battleship is currently scheduled as a summer tentpole film to be released May 25, 2012 on Memorial Day weekend.
