How ‘Taken 3′ Could Properly Conclude the ‘Taken’ Trilogy

When you stop and think about it, the Taken series has, in a bizarre twist, charted the same course as the Hangover franchise (bear with me now). The audacity of the first installment took audiences by surprise, reaping the benefits through word-of-mouth, and giving rise to an unplanned sequel. Part 2 enjoyed a hefty uptick in opening weekend returns, but at the cost of plummeting critical stocks (read our review, for case in point). Money talks in Hollywood, of course, so that means The Hangover Part III – and now, Taken 3 – is on the way.

These trilogy-finales will stray from the formula of their predecessors, according to the filmmaking talent behind them. However, the proposition of another Taken movie is more enticing to me than a third Hangover flick, for reasons that will be divulged after the jump.

Taken was intended as a standalone release from EuroCorp co-founder/filmmaker Luc Besson, as co-writer Robert Mark Kamen discussed in a recent interview with Hollywood.com. The unexpected popularity of ex-CIA man Bryan Mills (brought to life by Liam Neeson with his gruff, yet monotone, voice) led the duo to write what Kamen describes as “not really a sequel, it’s a continuation story.”

Mill’s actions from the previous film fuel the proceedings in Taken 2, as Albanian criminals – led by Rade Serbedzija, whose sex-trafficker son was kiled by Neeson – enact a revenge plot (Serbedzija calls it “justice”) against the Mills clan, who are gathered for some vacation time in Istanbul. The sequel has a welcome European flavor courtesy of Besson and director Olivier Megataon, but it also feels somewhat tired – even with inventive sequences (ex. grenades as a means for echo-location) and satirical (or are they just hackneyed?) scenes that riff on what many would consider the current epitome of hip American action cinema, Drive.

Liam Neeson in ‘Taken 2′

In a way, though, the ‘been there, done that’ feel of Taken 2 is appropriate given the place where Bryan Mills is at in his life. The character looks more worried while shining his car to prep for driving lessons with his daughter than he does while shooting people. During a confrontation with Serbedzija, Neeson even delivers a monologue about how tired he is of the cyclical violence he has contributed to (you can probably make out the political subtext with ease). The point is, by the end of the film, Mills’ interest lies with getting to an even better place with his maturing daughter (Maggie Grace) and soon-to-be-divorced ex-wife (Famke Janssen).

Kamen has made it known that “We’ve taken everyone we can take [so 'Taken 3' is] going to go in another direction.” Taken 2, as suggested before, continues to progress Mills’ relationship with his family, while evolving the allegory of the first film – i.e. Besson and Kamen’s examination of ‘American diplomacy,’ as illustrated through Mills’ take-no-prisoners approach to rescuing his kidnapped loved ones. Hence, things are in place for Part 3 to bring the main character’s personal arc to a more satisfying conclusion, while also allowing Mills to reckon with the dark side of his past once and for all (albeit, without someone close to him being ‘taken’).

Taken 2 is as logically ridiculous and visually kinetic as… well, every other project co-written by Besson and directed by Megaton (Transporter 3, Colombiana). Still, there is potential for a third and final installment to cap off the political themes and character threads developed throughout the first two films (more so than with the setup for Hangover Part III, as we bring this article full circle). The watchability factor of this Neeson franchise, coupled with the promise of closure, is enough to keep me interested in seeing what happens next in ‘The Taken Saga.’

  1. F yes another taken movie is a must. I went in to taken 2 with low expectations because the first one was so good that didn’t require a sequel but taken 2 has proved that the imagination of the writers is brilliant and therefore a 3rd could be just as great.

  2. I love taken and taken two, I would LOVE to are a third one . these movies are by far amazing!

  3. How about a Dennis Weaver-Crocidile Dundee type version called Tooken. Liam could play a redneck cop, who also is ex-military, who also is an accomplished hunter-tracker. His good looking female deputy is abducted and taken to NY city or LA. Liam would take his pick-up truck with slide-in camper, tracking dog, shotgun and leave the bayou to use his skills to track her, and ends up the big apple or LA. If done right, I would pay to see it.

Yes please, many more Taken, Transporter, Equalizer, Death Wish or similar movies.

  4. hey taken 2 was an awesome film, big liam neelson fan looking forward the third and final film.

  5. what if jamie,(maggies boyfriend) was an albanian…..

    • Don’t you think Bryan would have discovered?

  6. Taken 3 should be about Kims boyfriend and how he is Albanian and connected to the plot and tries to have the final revenge on Bryan Mills and his family. It could also add some irony as in Taken 2 Bryan Mills didn’t take a background check on Kims boyfriend which could result badly.

    • He did a check on him by ringing his mate and his picture came up on the computer

  7. Hell yea I can’t get enough of the taken franchise and it’ll be cool to see a third one come out

  8. Taken 3 would be good however I do believe it will need to focus on the family aspects to keep it interesting like the Sons coming and taking his daughter and the new boyfriend and he has to work with the new bf to save his daughter

  9. The first one was awesome, but the second one was really lame! And the reason for it being lame was because they made it a 12A… Really bad move! I would love to see a third one, but it needs to go back to being a 15 or maybe even an 18

  11. In the extended harder cut, they did a scene where Bryan gets a background check on Jamie, but they never show the results, but we know for a fact Sam knows, because he looked him up, and they did nothing “too deep”. And if they did Jamie as the other son, it would be predictable and quite boring (no matter how awesome Liam McBadass Neeson is). They should take the plot away from the Albanians and all of that, as another film like that and they’d be scraping the barrel dry.

  12. Personally, I can’t wait for “Taken 3″.

  13. I think taken 3 will be amazing. Finish the storyline with the albanians and call it a day.

  14. taken 1 and 2 is realy good and to here of a taken 3 will be magical here is my thaught how taken 3 could conclude with taken one when the girl was sold her dad killed the people responsible taken 2 was revenge and again they were taken and the dad killed the father of the remaining sons now for taken 3 could be with him have killed the remaining son’s farther the son’s now track the family down again this would be a good final movie to see how it ends if i was to give it a mark this movie would be 10/10

  15. Taken 3 should be about Kim’s boyfriend being Patrice st Claire’s son… That would be a badass plot twist if worked in properly

  16. Yes I would live to see a taken 3.

  17. Yes!!!! BRING ON TAKEN 3!! It should be a 2 hour film in which we get to know who Bryan Miller really is. Who are his parents? Does he have siblings? What is the true bond between him and his wife Linnie? Show us why they are so in love? What’s Linnie’s background? Obviously I’m a huge fan of TAKEN 1 and 2 and simply do not want it to end! I also think Liam Nessen is a fine and brilliant actor. He leaves room for other actors to be as good a fine an actor as he is.

  18. This is my correct email. I just submitted a raving review for Taken 2 and 3.

  19. Well they could take the family pet or something…. other than maybe a prequel or a friend of the family being taken. I really cant think of anything that would make the movie as good as the previous….

  20. I’m all for taken 3. If no one is going to be taken then he should go after the rest of the family before they come after him. All before his daughters wedding… Seems to fit in with this full circle closure talked about. And of course his ex and him would be back together as well

  24. Taken 2 was great. Make another!

  25. I would love to takwn 3 as i would like see what

  26. I would LOVE to see Taken 3. Personally I think maybe Sam should get taken for something they all collaborated on and Liam and the other friends have to rescue him.

  27. Well, i´m a new fan of “Taken” movies and i´ll appreciate the third one. At the end the bad guy father let us know that he has two more sons that they can´t stop to revenge them… so Mill´s go to tropoja and kill them all or the two sons come for Mills, whatever it is a good idea

  28. Spoiler alert, Sam gets a huge sum to find and take Liam back to the Albanians. The plot twists when sam calls for re-inforcements from them and they fly to Cali to capture him. While the action takes place on US soil, Liam is trying everything to find out whos behind it while trying to contact sam( later in the movie he pieces together that sam is trying to get him)

More will come in a few days
