Michael Shannon is having a good year. His steely performance as FBI agent Nelson Van Alden has wowed critics and helped make Boardwalk Empire one of the most exciting new shows on television. Meanwhile, Shannon is set to break out on the big screen soon as the villainous Zod in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot.
Of course, it’s not as if Shannon is a stranger to true cinephiles. The actor’s strong performance in 2008′s Revolutionary Road earned him an Academy Award nomination and he’s been a star in the theater world as well. Still, it’s fair to say that if you don’t know who Shannon is, you’ll probably find out soon – and what better place to start then the critically-acclaimed drama Take Shelter?
The film, which comes out October 7th, is about a man who has visions of powerful storms (and a family history of mental disease). As he prepares for the coming storm, which may not actually be coming, he alienates his family and friends.
Shannon received high praise for his performance during screenings at the Cannes film festival, and you can see why in this first trailer.

You never want to put too much stock in a trailer, but it’s easy to see see why some of our colleagues in the movie blogosphere have given Take Shelter such rave reviews. Films about mental illness typically rely on strong lead performances (Russel Crowe in A Beautiful Mind, for example) and Shannon’s work here looks solid.
It’s interesting to note that this is only the second film from director and writer Jeff Nichols. If the movie connects with wider audiences, expect Nichols to move up the Hollywood ladder quickly.
Does this film look interesting to you? What do you think of Michael Shannon’s rising Hollywood star?
Take Shelter comes out October 7th, 2011.
