Here’s our weekend box office report and various movie news tidbits we may have missed during the week. Who took the number one spot?

This week:

Unstoppable is stoppable; Dune‘s future is looking bleak; Paramount readies some high-profile films; Warner Bros. want Tales From The Gangster Squad; Courtney Ford needs True Blood; will Merlin have magic? Women kick butt in The Athena Project; Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Ashton Kutcher get ready for New Year’s Eve; and lots more.

Last week’s champion Megamind and the Denzel Washington flick Unstoppable (review here), directed by Tony Scott, fought it out for the top spot over the weekend. It looks like the animated superhero film came out on top, after grossing an estimated $30.1 million, upping its total to $89.8 million.

That doesn’t mean that Washington’s film disappointed – as it grossed $23.5 million, which is business as usual for a Washington action effort.

Despite rumors that Zoolander 2 has financial troubles, screenwriter Justin Theroux says things are still moving ahead (as far as he knows).

You may have heard the news/rumors floating around as of late that Zoolander 2 has hit some financial trouble. Following the news that Anchorman 2 had come up against similar trouble, Ben Stiller Tweeted the following about Zoolander 2:

“Ron Burgundy and Derek Zoolander looking to appear in sequels. Both men destitute, without means or intellect to fund their own comebacks.”

Although not definite confirmation of financial troubles, it still didn’t look good.

But fear not, Zoolander fans! There is hope to cling to as according to Justin Theroux (Iron Man 2) – who was previously reported to be writing Zoolander 2 alongside Stiller – the sequel is still moving forward. Here’s what he told Movieline:

Ben Stiller recently Tweeted about the status of Zoolander 2, hinting that the project might be facing the same financial troubles as Anchorman 2.

Last week we reported on the disappointing news that Anchorman 2 has been stopped in its tracks after Paramount passed on the project due to production costs. I’m definitely one of those people who was sad when that news surfaced.

If you thought that was the end to news of trouble regarding sequels to great modern comedies, think again. There’s word floating around that Zoolander 2 might be in similar trouble.

Zoolander himself, Ben Stiller, recently took to Twitter to update folks on the status of Zoolander 2. It’s not a hard and fast confirmation that the sequel is in trouble, but what Stiller Tweeted certainly isn’t the good news you’d want to hear about a movie currently in the works:

People who find themselves to be really, really, ridiculously good looking – or perhaps were just fans of the 2001 Ben Stiller comedy, Zoolander, were probably ecstatic last week when news hit that Zoolander 2 in the works.

Details we knew at the time of the announcement – which broke over at Deadline – is that Stiller is writing the script along with his Tropic Thunder scribe Justin Theroux, and that Theroux is also planning on directing. Rising comedy star Jonah Hill may end up starring in the movie as the primary villain, which is exciting news as I think he would fit very well within the world of Zoolander.

Now we get word from Stiller himself via MTV that Zoolander 2 is definitely happening (read: it wasn’t just a false rumor) and he gave some details on what ...

Click to continue reading Ben Stiller Provides Some ‘Zoolander 2′ Details

Have you ever wondered if there was more to life, other than being really, really, ridiculously good looking?

It’s finally happening folks! After nearly ten good years of talk, speculation and forgetting about it a few times, Zoolander 2 is on its way. According to a Deadline exclusive, Paramount will be working with Ben Stiller and Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder, Iron Man 2) to bring a sequel to the whacky 2001 comedy.

Theroux is spending some time at Paris fashion shows to get in the spirit and he’ll be working alongside Stiller to pen the script. Stiller himself helped co-write the first, developing the character of Derek Zoolander with the help of Drake Sather and John Hamburg.

For fans of the first, you know full well that what made the movie special, was the playful relationship with Zoolander’s nemesis-turned-friend, Hansel, played ...

Click to continue reading Zoolander 2 On Its Way!

It’s hard to believe that we are now into December. It seems like only yesterday I was talking about the big summer releases – and now we are looking forward to next years big movies.

This weeks Weekend Movie News Wrap Up features the obligatory box office wrap up as well as:

La Beouf is The Associate; Stiller talks Zoolander 2; who is Angelina Jolie? Zombie returns to Halloween and Brownlow Vs Captain Blood.

Box Office

America just loves Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon. How do I know this? Simple: Four Christmases grossed another $18 million over the weekend, keeping it the top movie at the box office despite terrible reviews. That’s only a 41% drop from opening weekend, usually an indication of a movie being very popular.

Twilight should bag another $14 million keeping it in the No. 2 position. Man, it must suck being a Studio Executive who turned this vampire flick ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: December 07, 2008
