Movie fans gets Branded as Hop and Arthur top the box office; Anna Karenina turns into Atonement 2; Keanu Reeves is a Man of Tai Chi; Sofia Vergara is a Stooge and Wahlberg plays Bait and Switch.

The original Arthur was caught between the moon and New York City, but the remake seems to be caught between Hop and Hanna.

You could say that Russell Brand is the real winner this weekend, considering that he has Hop at number one, and Arthur at two, however it looks like the British star may not get another chance to headline another live action film – at least not for a while due to Arthur’s lackluster debut. Hop brought in another $21.7 million for a $68.2 million total, while Arthur had a flaccid $12.6 million debut. It looks like the profit margin for Arthur may be on the rocks.

Your Highness, the new fantasy-comedy-adventure film starring McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Justin Theraux and Zooey Deschanel, opens in theaters this weekend. The film plays as an affectionate but tongue-in-check nod to ’80s fantasy epics such as Beastmaster, Krull and (a personal favorite) Dragon Slayer.

In fact, as McBride laughingly relayed at the Los Angeles press event we attended for Your Highness, “the first day we pitched this script, we came in and pitched it as this is “Krull” meets “Barry Lyndon,” and the executives were like ‘never pitch this movie like that — ever again.’”

Midgets. The movie opened with midgets. An entire village of midgets.

Right there, I thought “aw man – this is going to be a rough hour and a half.” But then the scene actually ended with an unexpectedly funny punch line and cut immediately to some interesting credits that gave me at least a little bit of hope.

Your Highness is a take off on medieval/fantasy films from the 1980s - with a modern, hard R-rated comedy twist. The movie stars and was co-written by Danny McBride, who plays Thadeous, the younger, slacker son of the king. The first-born (Fabious) is played by James Franco. It seems like a rule nowadays that the  spring/summer movie seasons yield at least one sleeper hit comedy, and this year the competition is still wide open with films like Paul, Bridesmaids and Your Highness all hitting theaters. (Sorry, but The Hangover 2 doesn’t really count as a sleeper at this point.)

In the case of Your Highness, we’ve seen a trailer that suggests the movie will be a fun mashup of comedy and medieval adventure, as well as a red band trailer that let us know that there will be some foul-language fun to be had as well.
