It's stoner-comedy week for DVD and Blu-ray fans, with a bit of Disney counter-programming. Check out the details on the latest home video releases in this week's breakdown.

This week in DVD and Blu-ray is a vast improvement from last week’s dud. Plenty of sci-fi entertainment hitting shelves alongside a pair of classic comedies that make one heck of a double feature. Most of these movies did poorly at the box office, but hope for a better opportunity in the home video market.

If you like stoner comedy, this is the greatest week of all time. While Cheech and Chong may not be on the docket, you will find an opportunity to spend your money on Paul, Your Highness, Fast Times at Ridgemont High as well as Dazed and Confused. Disney has its counter-programming with the release of The Fox and the Hound and Mars Needs Moms.

Those with a desire for the niche market can also hunt for a new DVD and Blu-ray ...

Click to continue reading DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: August 9, 2011

Here's our weekend box office report for the weekend of April 15th – and various movie news tidbits we may have missed.

This week:

The box office travels to Rio, while we Scream again; Russell Brand sings Rock of Ages; Pesci gets Gotti; The Dark Tower gets a new writer; Galifianakis may have a hangover but he won’t R.I.P; Franco attends Jump Street – but will Johnny Depp? Trumbull may have Silent Running but he’ll be moving at 60 fps and Hallelujah – there’s finally a Jeff Buckley biopic.

Box Office

Rio was the box office champion over the weekend after grossing an estimated $40 million. The animated film which features the vocal talents of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Tracy Morgan, will.i.am, Jamie Foxx and George Lopez surpassed predictions to again show that animated films are big at the box office. This could be the start of a new animated franchise for 20th Century Fox, giving the studio a steady income for the next few years.

Movie fans gets Branded as Hop and Arthur top the box office; Anna Karenina turns into Atonement 2; Keanu Reeves is a Man of Tai Chi; Sofia Vergara is a Stooge and Wahlberg plays Bait and Switch.

Box Office

The original Arthur was caught between the moon and New York City, but the remake seems to be caught between Hop and Hanna.

You could say that Russell Brand is the real winner this weekend, considering that he has Hop at number one, and Arthur at two, however it looks like the British star may not get another chance to headline another live action film – at least not for a while due to Arthur’s lackluster debut. Hop brought in another $21.7 million for a $68.2 million total, while Arthur had a flaccid $12.6 million debut. It looks like the profit margin for Arthur may be on the rocks.

Your Highness, the new fantasy-comedy-adventure film starring McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Justin Theraux and Zooey Deschanel, opens in theaters this weekend. The film plays as an affectionate but tongue-in-check nod to ’80s fantasy epics such as Beastmaster, Krull and (a personal favorite) Dragon Slayer.

In fact, as McBride laughingly relayed at the Los Angeles press event we attended for Your Highness, “the first day we pitched this script, we came in and pitched it as this is “Krull” meets “Barry Lyndon,” and the executives were like ‘never pitch this movie like that — ever again.’”

No one was more surprised that they were ultimately able to make this film than the film’s creators. Though they had worked together on Pineapple Express, and the television series Easbound And Down prior to this project, the ...

Click to continue reading Interview: Stars & Creators Of ‘Your Highness’ Quest The Way They Want To Quest

If for you a combination of a medieval setting, plenty of sex jokes, dirty language & topless women makes for a funny movie, then 'Your Highness' is for you (that's not necessarily a criticism).

Screen Rant’s Vic Holtreman reviews Your Highness

Midgets. The movie opened with midgets. An entire village of midgets.

Right there, I thought “aw man – this is going to be a rough hour and a half.” But then the scene actually ended with an unexpectedly funny punch line and cut immediately to some interesting credits that gave me at least a little bit of hope.

Your Highness is a take off on medieval/fantasy films from the 1980s - with a modern, hard R-rated comedy twist. The movie stars and was co-written by Danny McBride, who plays Thadeous, the younger, slacker son of the king. The first-born (Fabious) is played by James Franco. Thadeous is of course jealous of his heroic and someday-to-be-king older brother, while Fabious loves his younger brother dearly and ...

Click to continue reading ‘Your Highness’ Review

At a recent press event for 'Your Highness' James Franco offered some thoughts on why his life has, in many ways, become consistent fodder for public spectacle.

James Franco has become a fairly consistent source of media fodder in the past several years. For some fans, and critics alike, Franco’s life seems like a twenty-four hour source of engaging performance art. The actor’s choices feel unusual enough to feed the circuit of press attention, which in turn takes on a life of its own.

From a stint on General Hospital, a fairly consistent output of Funny-or-Die videos, hosting the Oscars in the same year he was nominated, to a near constant output of live tweet videos and images (including from the backstage of the Academy Awards) Franco takes the archetype of the distant, larger-than-life movie star, and turns it on its head. If we add the bevy of projects he is reportedly attached to as an actor, director, and/or producer, then stir in his ...

Click to continue reading James Franco Responds to the Public’s Fascination with His Life

It seems like a rule nowadays that the spring/summer movie seasons yield at least one sleeper hit comedy, and this year the competition is still wide open with films like Paul, Bridesmaids and Your Highness all hitting theaters. (Sorry, but The Hangover 2 doesn’t really count as a sleeper at this point.)

In the case of Your Highness, we’ve seen a trailer that suggests the movie will be a fun mashup of comedy and medieval adventure, as well as a red band trailer that let us know that there will be some foul-language fun to be had as well.

With January ending today and nothing special to show for it from the film industry or box office, we take a look forward to the rest of 2011 and pick out the 20 movies we’re most excited about seeing on the big screen.

It was not an easy task, narrowing down our choices to 20 and ordering them - Just look at our complete 2011 movie guide to see the options – but we’ve done it and are left with a healthy mix of comedies, sci-fi films, comic book movies and a lot of action that will bring the hoards to the movie theaters.

So, before we look back and celebrate the best of 2010 at the Oscars, let’s look forward to Screen Rant’s Most Anticipated Movies of 2011.

A green-band trailer and official poster have been released for 'Your Highness', which stars James Franco and Danny McBride as brothers and knights on a quest with Natalie Portman.

Question of the day: what do you get when the director of a stoner action/comedy flick teams up with Eastbound & Down‘s Kenny Powers to make an intentionally silly medieval adventure that features fantastical creatures and Natalie Portman doing her best Xena: Warrior Princess impersonation? The answer is Your Highness.

An official green band trailer and poster are now out for this flick, which reunites Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green with James Franco for a movie that looks a bit more like a humorous action pic than a flat-out parody in the style of Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Here’s an official description of the premise for Your Highness:

Throughout history, tales of chivalry have burnished the legends of brave, handsome knights who rescue fair damsels, slay dragons and conquer evil. But behind many a ...

Click to continue reading ‘Your Highness’ Trailer & Poster: Swords, Shields and Silliness

A restricted trailer for 'Your Highness' has hit the Internet and showcases James Franco, Danny McBride, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel in a vulgar, period piece action-comedy.

It has been a while since we’ve heard from the R-rated period piece/action comedy Your Highness.

Finally, a trailer has dropped for the ensemble comedy that feels like a perfect mashup of Pineapple Express andRobin Hood: Men In Tights.

The trailer has everything you could imagine in a movie like Your Highness. The cast is truly inspired – James Franco, Danny McBride, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel should make for quite a team. Most importantly, shoving crude and contemporary humor into a period piece is something I’ve never seen before.

Sure, we saw childish humor in Robin Hood: Men in Tights and there’s plenty of modern comedy in Monty Python and the Holy Grail – but the level of vulgarity in this trailer is enough to suggest director David Gordon Green could care less about accuracy. ...

Click to continue reading ‘Your Highness’ Red Band Trailer Packs A Hilarious Punch

A bunch of new images have recently appeared online for what are sure to be some anticipated movies simply as a result of the people involved, not necessarily how good the movies look themselves. They are the new Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) comic book adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. The World; the new comedy Cop Out directed by Kevin Smith (Clerks); MacGruber, the movie based on the Saturday Night Live sketch; and Your Highness, an historical comedy from the director of Pineapple Express and starring the likes of Danny McBride, James Franco and Zooey Deschanel.

The image above is actually the first of two official images released for Edgar Wright’s fantasy-comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which stars Michael Cera as the titular character who must defeat his new girlfriend’s seven evil ex-boyfriends in ...

Click to continue reading New Images: Scott Pilgrim, Cop Out, MacGruber & More

In the Wrap Up this Week:

The box office is UP; Robert Downey Jr might still saddle up for Cowboys and Aliens; Lucy beats Nicole Kidman to the Punch; Natalie Portman, Danny McBride and James Franco salute Your Highness; Seann William Scott and Adam Brody are A Couple of Dicks and Chevy Chase dips his toes in the Hot Tub Time Machine and he may return as Fletch.

BOX OFFICE:
The summer season is now well and truly here. Pixar’s Up shows that family films and the Pixar brand are hugely profitable. The animated film banked a huge $68 million over the weekend. For a film that sells most of it’s tickets in half price matinees that’s a lot of attendance.

Last week’s champion Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian had to settle for the runner up spot with a weekend take of $25 million.
