Warner Bros. Adds Inception, Harry Potter & More to Facebook Movies

The fast-paced world of digital video rentals has all but been dominated by Netflix at this point. Sure, there are other ways to rent movies and television shows online – iTunes, Hulu, Amazon, even the near extinct Blockbuster – but you rarely (if ever) hear someone say, “Guess what just hit Amazon Instant Video!”

That said, there are those people who exist that wouldn’t leave Facebook if they didn’t have to. If it were possible, they’d have Facebook everything, from email to music to videogames to movies. Fortunately for those people, Warner Bros. is expanding its Facebook movie rental library with five additional films.

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: March 22nd, 2011

One true classic and a few not-so-classic films hit DVD and Blu-ray this week. Next week has one of the best collections of new and old releases on the home video market, but until then, some lighthearted films will keep you entertained.

A massive box office bust (How Do You Know) and a box office surprise (Yogi Bear) go up against an A-lister romantic thriller (The Tourist) and the first alien invasion movie of the season (Skyline). But the release to own this week is the Blu-ray re-release of Stand By Me.

The Rite scares away the competition at the box office; Streisand and Rogen suffer My Mother’s Curse; The Beatles Get Back; three more join New Year’s Eve; Firelight gets a writer; Travolta eyes Gotti and Jackman and Pine are Guardians.Box Office

This week Anthony Hopkins’ latest fright fest The Rite (read our review) topped the box office with an estimated $15 million.

The exorcism drama opened in the middle of analyst expectations. If it goes the route of most horror films then it will likely see a heavy drop next weekend.

Last weekend’s champion No Strings Attached dropped to number two. The Natalie Portman comedy grossed $13.7 million for a $39.7 million total gross.

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher’s No Strings Attached topped the box office over the weekend with a decent $20.3 million debut. The R-rated comedy surpassed the start of recent adult-themed comedies, a major factor in this was more than likely Portman’s Black Swan publicity blitz.

The Green Hornet dropped to second place after grossing a smidgen over $18 million. The super hero film has now upped its cume to over $63 million.

2011 Razzies Shortlist: The Worst Films and Performances of 2010

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31^st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24^th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: January 1st 2011

This week:

The Little Fockers show True Grit at the box office; Andrew Garfield goes from Spider-Man to Michael Mann in Capa alongside Gemma Arterton; Saw creators open Insidious on April Fool’s Day and Total Recall moves from Mars to Toronto.

Box Office

It was a close race over the weekend for the number one spot but it looks like Little Fockers will top the chart with an estimated $26.3 million for a total gross of $103 million. It appears that people are just too busy at Christmas to read reviews. That can be the only reason for the Fockers having two weeks at the top, right?

Jeff Bridges was in the runner-up position with True Grit. The Coen Brothers film upped its domestic total to $86.8 million after grossing $24.5 million over the weekend, giving the pair their highest grossing film ever. More gold awaits.

The box office meets the Little Fockers; we learn about the Madden Curse; Screen Gems asks About Last Night; Phillip Noyce cuts down on Salt; Christian Bale is a Nanjing Hero and Christina Hendricks, Olivia Munn and Seth Meyers don’t know how Sarah Jessica Parker Does It.

The Focker family were the box office champions over the weekend. Little Fockers,the third film in the “Meet The…” franchise banked an estimated $34 million over the weekend (read our review). The Ben Stiller starrer has now scored $48 million since its launch last week. The grosses aren’t amazing for this pricey comedy, but it should be profitable in the end for Universal.

Every trailer, poster or movie still leading up to the release of Yogi Bear had me firmly convinced this movie would be juvenile, uninspired and unfunny – so imagine my surprise when it actually ended up showing some charm.

Don’t misunderstand me, director Eric Brevig hasn’t created some new masterpiece of cinema – but he does know who’s in his target audience and how to pander to them intelligently. It was quite refreshing to watch a children’s film that doesn’t to resort to poop jokes, crotch shots or inappropriate behavior to illicit laughs from those under the age of ten. ‘Yogi Bear’ Trailer #3: A Movie Strictly for the Kids

A lot of people have been complaining about this new Yogi Bear movie, which merges live-action with CGI characters in order to bring the popular Hann-Barbera cartoon to life in the very same vein as Scooby-Doo or The Chipmunks have already.

Of course, those same people always assert that their beloved childhood cartoons should be spared from Hollywood’s exploitative touch, so they will probably spiral further down into despair when they see this latest Yogi Bear trailer.

Now, the second Yogi Bear trailer was pretty thin on story (read: there wasn’t one), instead opting to throw a series of hijinks and gags at us in the hope that we would be amused. And, if I was a six-year-old boy again, I might’ve been.

Nobody really asked for a 3D film version of the Yogi Bear cartoon that features the vocal talents of Dan Aykroyd or Justin Timberlake – but that is exactly what moviegoers will get this December.

A second trailer has been released for Yogi Bear, the titular star who made his debut as a side character on the cartoon The Huckleberry Hound Show back in 1958. The picnic-basket-loving bear was given his own TV series three years later and has since become one of the most famous characters created by Hanna-Barbera Productions.

Official Yogi Bear Poster and Trailer [Updated]

There hasn’t been much information released regarding Warner Bros. upcoming live-action/CGI mixed movie, Yogi Bear, since the first announcement of the film back in 2008. Now Yahoo! Movies has the first exclusive look at the official poster and honestly, it isn’t that bad.

Really though, the look of Yogi and his sidekick Boo-Boo was never in doubt – the story, however, was. Animation technology has reached such a the level that there is never an excuse for a serious studio to ever fall behind in that area, but just like every other film out there (animated or not), if the story is crap then so too is the film.

First Yogi Bear Images?

This could be our first glimpse of Yogi Bear in the wild.

Slash Film has linked to a set of images that could reveal the general look of the character as he’d appear in the upcoming live action/CGI Yogi Bear feature film, based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

It’s been nearly four months since Dan Aykroyd, Anna Faris, and Justin Timberlake were cast in the film and we’re definitely hungry for news on the project. The pictures certainly look legit, though we’re obviously suspicious of the timing .

Should it turn out they’re actually fake, Warner Bros. needs to get in contact with whoever created the images – and put them to work.

‘Yogi Bear’ Adds Aykroyd, Faris & Timberlake

Ever since a live-action, 3D Yogi Bear movie was announced back in February this year, there hasn’t really been any movement on the news front regarding it. However, fast forward to now and we may have our main cast in the form of Dan Aykroyd, Anna Faris and Justin Timberlake.

Aykroyd is in negotiations to voice the titular character in Yogi Bear, with Faris set to play a nature documentarian who follows the antics of Yogi in the fictional Jellystone Park. Timberlake is also in talks to join the project, possibly playing Yogi’s sidekick, Boo-Boo. Green Hornet & Tron Legacy Fight For Release Date

For those of you following the troubled development of Seth Rogen’s upcoming adaption of The Green Hornet, the movie was officially delayed five months from its original summer, 2010 scheduled release to December 17th. According to to the star of the movie, this was a very positive thing as it allowed for more time to finish post production and not rush the film.

Fortunately for moviegoers, the movie is now on the right track and has entered into production as of yesterday. Most of the film’s cast is now locked down with Tom Wilkinson and David Harbour representing the latest additions and we received official confirmations for Cameron Diaz and Edward James Olmos having roles in the film.
