Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s Y: The Last Man comic book series was previously slated to be brought to cinematic life by Disturbia writing-directing duo Carl Ellsworth and D.J. Caruso, with Caruso’s frequent leading <del datetime="2012-03-15T15:34:17+00:00">boy</del> man (Shia LaBeouf) being on-and-off rumored to portray the titular character, Yorick Brown.

However, Caruso ultimately left the project back in 2010, citing a conflict of interest with studio heads over just how much narrative content from Vaughan and Guerra’s vast source material should be compressed down and fit into the first film – as to lay the groundwork for an eventual movie trilogy.

In the summer, we reported that Y: The Last Man was facing production woes, with New Line and possible director DJ Caruso having disagreements over the film. Since then, Louis Leterrier has been confirmed as a potential candidate for the director’s spot (a more than worthy second choice), but even with that news the film was still up in the air.

While we don’t have any more news on whether or not Y: The Last Man is finally moving forward, we do have some more information on why DJ Caruso left the project. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Caruso talked about the film, as well as additional upcoming projects including Dead Space and a possible movie version of the FX TV show, ...

Click to continue reading DJ Caruso Talks ‘Y: The Last Man’, ‘Dead Space’ & ‘The Shield’ Movie

Director Louis Leterrier's wishes may come true for the long-delayed adaptation of 'Y: The Last Man' but we're no closer to having the movie made. Or could it be a TV series?

The last we heard about the film adaptation of Y: The Last Man, director D.J. Caruso and New Line Cinema were having issues agreeing on the direction of the project and how to spread it out over multiple films. Caruso wants a trilogy, New Line wants to fit more into less and hence, multiple script re-writes and production delays.

Conveniently enough, director Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk, Clash of the Titans) expressed interest in the project a few months before that as he does with most projects he’s interested in (like The Avengers) and now comes confirmation that he’s in talks with New Line for the job.

Director D.J. Caruso explains why he and New Line are having issues agreeing on the direction of Y: The Last Man and why it's been continually delayed.

Should the adaptation of Y: The Last Man be a trilogy or a solo movie? That’s the dividing question delaying production on the film adaptation. Director D.J. Caruso has been attached to the project for a few years now but now he and New Line are having some issues agreeing on how to structure the movie(s).

New Line wants to take the critically acclaimed and highly successful Vertigo comic series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra and make it into one condensed movie, but Caruso deems it necessary to spread the story across three movies since it is a 60-issue series.

It’s been a long time since we heard anything on the adaptation of Brian k. Vaughan’s hit comic book series Y: The Last Man. As of last June, director DJ Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) was still working on the script with Vaughan and screenwriter Carl Ellsworth but that they wouldn’t be ready to start production in 2010.

According to Latino Review’s inside sources, it appears that they’re off the project and that director Louis Leterrier is targeting the director’s chair.

As we know, DJ Caruso and Shia LaBeouf have a strong working relationship and the plan was for Y: The Last Man to star LaBeouf and give him yet another franchise for his resume. With them seemingly off the film and it having been delayed, the news of Leterrier circling ...

Click to continue reading Louis Leterrier Could Direct ‘Y: The Last Man’

As of two weeks ago, it seemed that Transformers star Shia LaBeouf would not be a part of the upcoming film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s Y: The Last Man.

He had seemingly opted out of the project where he would of again been paired with director D.J. Caruso. As a self-proclaimed lover of the comics himself, he admittedly stated that the lead character is far too similar to the Sam Witwicky character he plays in the Transformers franchise (and I would argue most other roles too…).

This was a very good thing as he was completely right. It’s too similar to his other roles and he’s far too over-exposed at the moment. I’d like someone else to have a stab at it and I think the movie would ...

Click to continue reading Y: The Last Man Might Still Be Shia LaBeouf

Y: The Last Man is the critically acclaimed and highly successful Vertigo comic series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. The story follows the epic journey of Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, Ampersand, as the only two known mammals possessing a Y chromosome left on earth as they travel through the new and chaotic world looking for answers and a long lost love.

The project has been set to be helmed by DJ Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) and for a long time, it seemed that Caruso’s go-to guy, Shia LaBeouf, would play the lead. LaBeouf was interested and pre-Transformers I would of said he’d be a pretty decent choice. The problem is that Shia’s now over-exposed and he plays the same guy in every movie he’s in.
