Fox has settled on an early 2013 start date for shooting on the 'X-Men: First Class' sequel, so as to avoid a scheduling conflict for star Jennifer Lawrence (due to her 'Hunger Games' commitment).

Pre-production for the next installment in 20th Century Fox’s semi-reboot/semi-prequel X-Men movie (tentatively titled X-Men: First Class 2) has been coming along at a fairly relaxed pace. That pattern continues today, with the news that cameras on the First Class sequel are slated to start rolling no sooner than the first month of 2013.

Back when First Class director Matthew Vaughn officially closed a deal to helm the followup, it was indicated that production could commence by the latter half of 2012. Part of Fox’s motivation for holding back the X-Men flick’s start date is to avoid a scheduling conflict for Jennifer Lawrence, who remains set to reprise her First Class role as Raven/Mystique in the sequel.

Here’s a breakdown of the situation concerning Lawrence (via Heat Vision):

'X-Men: First Class' co-writer Jane Goldman has confirmed that she is working alongside Matthew Vaughn on the currently-untitled sequel.

Thanks in part to her previous collaborations with filmmaker Matthew Vaughn (especially Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class), screenwriter Jane Goldman has become an in-demand talent. However, due to her increasingly-hectic work schedule, there’s been some question as to whether or not Goldman would be lending a helping hand on the impending First Class sequel – which Vaughn is now officially set to direct.

Goldman was in attendance at the 2012 Empire Awards ceremony, where she confirmed that X-Men: First Class 2 (not the official title) is among the projects she’s developing with Vaughn. It’s probably safe to assume that means Goldman will also be directly contributing to the film’s script, in some capacity.

X-Men: First Class featured script contributions from Thor co-writing duo Ashley Miller and Zack Stenz, in addition to ...

Click to continue reading Jane Goldman Confirms Involvement with ‘X-Men: First Class 2′

Simon Kinberg says his screenplay for the 'X-Men: First Class' sequel will further explore Magneto's evolution from anti-hero to more of a pure villain.

Now that Matthew Vaughn is officially onboard to direct X-Men: First Class 2 (not the actual title), he’ll be working steadily alongside writer/producer Simon Kinberg to decide where the sequel goes next, in terms of plot, and which returning characters will be more, less, or equally emphasized as they were in First Class.

James McAvoy previously suggested that First Class 2 may focus heavily on the transformative process which his X-Men universe alter ego (Charles Xavier) undergoes, in the aftermath of the crippling injuries he sustained in the first film. It’s possible Xavier’s character arc in the sequel will somewhat mirror Erik Lehnsherr’s (Michael Fassbender) in First Class, partially for that reason.

Kinberg has spoken with MTV about the tentative plan for First Class 2, saying that the film should ...

Click to continue reading ‘X-Men: First Class 2′ Will Focus Heavily On Magneto

X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn’s return for a sequel has been essentially a given – not only because the majority of people walked away impressed with his work on that X-Men franchise reboot/prequel, but also because he’s been actively developing ideas for the next installment (as First Class stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have made known).

20th Century Fox has reportedly (at last) closed a deal for Vaughn to direct X-Men: First Class 2 (official title pending), which will once again be produced by X-Men film franchise stalwart, Bryan Singer.

Deadline mentions that Vaughn is officially onboard to helm a sequel to First Class in the site’s report on Fox production president Emma Watts signing a new deal, through to 2015. That article also reiterates previous reports that the screenplay is ...

Click to continue reading Matthew Vaughn To Direct ‘X-Men: First Class 2′

Despite a rather rushed production, an entirely new cast and taking the risk of setting the film in the ’60s, X-Men: First Class proved to be the most critically well-received superhero film of the year. Thanks to director Matthew Vaughn, Bryan Singer and some creative writing on the part of Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz and others, Twentieth Century Fox has revitalized the team-based aspect of the X-Men franchise.

X-Men: First Class raked in over $350 million at the worldwide box office and so a sequel is on the way. Sherlock Holmes writer Simon Kinberg will be handling the screenplay this time around, and Matthew Vaughn is already pitching sequel ideas to Fox about Charles Xavier who will remain a key focus of the next film.

Read on to learn about Michael Fassbender's hopes for the 'X-Men: First Class' sequel - and whether or not he is interested in headlining the 'RoboCop' remake.

Moviegoers will have the opportunity to see Michael Fassbender on the big screen multiple times in the near future, between this month’s A Dangerous Method, December’s Shame, and the January 2012 release, Haywire. He will also be co-starring in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which is scheduled to hit theaters early next summer.

There’s also the in-development (and tentatively-titled) X-Men: First Class 2, which will see Fassbender reprise his (pretty much) universally-praised turn as a young Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto – along with the RoboCop remake, for which Fassbender has been cited as a possibility to headline.

A followup to X-Men: First Class is slowly, but surely, coming together.
'X-Men: The Last Stand' and 'Sherlock Holmes' writer Simon Kinberg has been hired to write the script for the 'X-Men: First Class' sequel.

There’s been a lot of question surrounding the proposed sequel to X-Men: First Class, including what time period it will be set in (the ’70s? The ’80s?), which mutants will be featured (Cyclops and Jean Grey, anyone?) and of course, whether the cast of the first film and director Matthew Vaughn will all return for the next installment.

One question that has been seldom asked is who might be writing the script for the next chapter of First Class - but, that’s the question we have the answer for today.

Considering its somewhat humble budgetary beginnings, the X-Men film series has easily become one of the most successful superhero franchises of all time, with two successful sequels, two spin-offs, and a sequel to one of those spinoffs on the way.

Recently, while discussing his upcoming robot-boxing film, Real Steel, Hugh Jackman went into great detail about all things X-Men – including The Wolverine, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: First Class 2, and X-Men 4.
Now that the 2011 Summer movie season is behind us, here's our look back at what we think were the best and most disappointing movies this year - along with a couple of very unexpected surprises.

Forget about checking your calendar – when you read that Shark Night 3D is one of the big releases of the weekend, you know the Summer Movie Season is officially coming to an end.

Overall, 2011 was a decent year as far as summer releases go. There were a handful of surprises (and more than a couple of disappointments) but most movies were good enough to ensure that people walked away entertained and with their expectations met – as opposed to, say, protesting in the streets and demanding a ticket refund.

Quibbles about whether Fast Five or Thor truly marked the start of Summer 2011 aside, the season started off with a bang at the box office – and eventually fizzled out in the end. So, here are the big questions: What ...

Click to continue reading Summer 2011 Movies: The Best, The Worst, & Some Surprises

The highlight of this week’s home video slate is the release of X-Men: First Class on DVD and Blu-ray. While it does not come out until Friday, you’ll have some other worthy options on Tuesday.

Everything Must Go and Hanna both provide home audiences with indie film choices. On one hand you’ve got the latest Will Ferrell dramedy, and on the other is a unique thriller unlike any other this year.

In addition to the high profile new releases, one of the most polarizing classics of all time hits Blu-ray. Scarface is a film that people seem to either love or hate. Either way, Universal Studios has provided it with a special edition Steelbook release.

The following titles can be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

John Dykstra has been around for a while. His first big break was in 1977 when he worked as the Special Photographic Effects Supervisor on Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Since then he has been a part of almost two dozen films, including Caddyshack, Spider-Man 1 & 2, Hancock, Inglourious Basterds and most recently, X-Men: First Class.

The visual effects master took some time to help promote the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of X-Men: First Class by sharing some his secrets and stories.
Rose Byrne, the actress who played Moira MacTaggert in 'X-Men: First Class,' talked about the possibility of a sequel directed by Matthew Vaughn.

While X-Men: First Class was pretty well-received critically – read our X-Men: First Class review – it wasn’t nearly as financially successful as previous X-Men films. In fact, the domestic gross didn’t even make the production budget back, which usually isn’t the best news for fans looking for a part 2.

So the big question now is: Will there be an X-Men: First Class 2? An X-Men: Second Class? Or have all X-Men prequel-sequel plans been scrapped indefinitely? Recently, Rose Byrne – the actress who played CIA agent Moira MacTaggert – talked about the possibilities.

In a bit of non-news, the executives behind-the-scenes at Twentieth Century Fox are reportedly discussing sequel potential for X-Men: First Class, a film that so far has achieved the highest critical acclaim against its comic book movie competition this year.

Producers Lauren Shuler Donner and Bryan Singer, director Matthew Vaughn and most of the cast have already opened in interviews up about their desires and ideas for a sequel, and since First Class made money and fans ate it up, of course it’s getting one. It’s just a matter of when.

The plan from the beginning was to use Singer’s First Class story as a way to quasi-reboot the franchise and kickstart a second full trilogy of team-based X-Men films. It clearly worked so it won’t be long before we see the official ...

Click to continue reading X-Men: First Class: Fox ‘Discussing Sequels Internally’

Cars 2 hits first gear and takes the top spot at the box office, while Bad Teacher has a good start; Warren Beatty is Howard Hughes; Charlie Day joins del Toro’s Pacific Rim; Geoff Johns talks a Green Lantern franchise (hey - don’t laugh) and will The Kings of Leon serenade James Bond?

Box Office

This weekend Disney Pixar’s Cars 2 took pole position at the box office, zooming ahead of the nearest competition in the form of Bad Teacher. The CGI car pic raced up an estimated $68 million to cross the finish line ahead of the original Cars’ $60 million debut. The film has received mixed reviews (read ours here) but it should be very profitable by the time it ends its run, especially once merchandising is factored in.

The box office is super as Super 8 charts at number one; be prepared to be afraid of Lions, Tigers and Bears; love is in the air as Kodi Smit-McPhee joins Hailee Steinfeld in Romeo and Juliet; S. Victor Whitmill faces-off with Warner Bros. over Ed Helms’ Hangover 2 tattoo; Ed Zwick has Consent to Kill an American Assassin; Zemeckis and Washington take Flight; Warren Beatty is calling Dick Tracy 2 and has Fast Five’s Sung Kang fired a Headshot at Thomas Jane? He might have – but you can’t call it that!

J.J. Abrams’ latest foray into directing, Super 8 topped the box office over the weekend with an impressive estimated gross of $37 million ($38 in total). While it may not be a record breaking debut like a lot of summer films, it is impressive since it’s not a sequel, or a remake, or based ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: June 12th, 2011

After all the hype and the hate, 'X-Men: First Class' was a movie that didn't fully validate the naysayers or the true believers. Check out 5 things we learned from watching this much-debated film come to fruition.

When we posted our preview for the 2011 Superhero Movie Showdown, we said that X-Men: First Class was going to be the biggest wildcard of the summer 2011 Movie Season.

The movie had a lot of issues from the get go – a rushed production schedule, a loose interpretation of X-Men lore, no headlining stars, confusion over its continuity – but it also had the promise of a great director (Matthew Vaughn), some great leading actors (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) and the return of X-Men movie guru Bryan Singer to the franchise he started back in 2000.

Now that X-Men: First Class has debuted in theaters to critical acclaim but a lukewarm first-week box office, it seems that all the uproar and debate that ...

Click to continue reading 5 Things We Learned From ‘X-Men: First Class’

The X-Men come First at the box office; George Lucas’ Red Tails gets composed – it looks like it might take off soon; Alison Hannigan slices open American Reunion; Hailee Steinfeld and Megan Fox fight it out for Carrie; the producer of Insidious talks about a potential sequel and Bradley Cooper and Oliva Wilde have Words.

The fourth instalment of the X-Men franchise – X-Men: First Class topped the box office over the weekend. However, depending on your point of view you could say that it’s the fifth in the series, if you count last year’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine or you could call it the first in a new series since it’s a prequel/reboot (preboot?) of Bryan Singer’s 2000 film. Whatever the case, the Matthew Vaughn-directed superhero film banked an estimated $56 million over the weekend – a figure which is pretty much on a par with ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: June 5th, 2011

Bad CGI and continuity errors are debated in this hilarious installment of the 'I’m a Marvel…and I’m a DC' video series - featuring 'Green Lantern' vs. 'X-Men: First Class'.

Green Lantern and X-Men: First Class have a lot in common. For one thing, both films are ranked among the summer’s most anticipated superhero movies, even though each of them faced early criticism from fanboys (Green Lantern for unfinished CGI, X-Men for continuity issues).

While Green Lantern doesn’t come out for another couple of weeks (June 17th), X-Men: First Class has been received well by critics (check out our First Class review). Will Green Lantern find the same success?

For fun, resident YouTube genius ItsJustSomeRandomGuy put the two franchises side by side for another edition of his hilarious “I’m a Marvel…and I’m a DC” video series.
