James Marsden (Hop) talks about wanting to reprise his role as Cyclops in 'X-Men 4' and '5,' and discusses his off camera death in Brett Ratner's 'X-Men: The Last Stand.'

The first three X-Men films were incredibly successful, if not always universally loved. And while X-Men: First Class is technically a part of that franchise, it also exists on its own – separate from Wolverine, Cyclops and bad-wig-wearing Storm.

It was recently announced that Fox was actively developing X-Men 4 and 5, perhaps to be directed by Bryan Singer. Now, the man who played Cyclops, James Marsden (Hop), is talking about whether or not he wants to participate in the sequels and how he felt about his death in Brett Ratner’s X-Men: The Last Stand.

On the subject of whether or not he would like to take part in the new X-Men sequels, Marsden said in his interview with Movie Line:

A year and a half ago, I posed the question of whether Bryan Singer could return to the X-Men franchise to helm X-Men 4. At the time, he revealed he was in talks with Fox and expressed his love for the franchise and cast. It only seemed fitting that he we return to right the ship, so to speak, for a franchise he established.

We all know now he later signed on to direct the prequel, X-Men: First Class, instead and following an interesting turn of events, he had to drop out of the director’s chair due to at-the-time scheduling conflicts for Warner Bros.’ Jack the Giant Killer. Well, we may have been right from the start regarding Singer because X-Men 4 is still in development… and so is X-Men 5!

[Update: Millar's claims may not be totally accurate - See Pg. 2 for details]

For fans of the X-Men movies, there seems to be a lot to look forward to over the next few years. In the last few weeks alone, there’ s been a lot of talk about X-Men: First Class, Wolverine 2 and X-Men 4, relating to director Bryan Singer’s possible involvement with these films.

As we know, Singer agreed to come back and work with Fox on directing a prequel to the franchise about the first school of mutants with X-Men: First Class but he was recently forced out due to a previous commitment with Warner Bros. to helm Jack the Giant Killer. Now he’ll only be producing First Class, but Fox and producer Lauren Shuler Donner would like ...

Click to continue reading Mark Millar Turned Down X-Men 4 Writing Gig?
It's now official! Bryan Singer is no longer directing X-Men: First Class and will instead produce. Who will take his spot and how soon with the project start shooting?

We’ve got some good news and some bad news for fans of the first two X-Men movies. The good news is that Fox studios loves Bryan Singer’s story treatment for X-Men: First Class and what writer Jamie Moss has done with it, so much so that they want to kickstart this film into production right away. The bad news for many is that Singer won’t be directing the movie and instead will take a producer’s credit on the project.

The news that Singer may be pulled out of the director’s chair on his planned return to the X-Men franchise surfaced last weekend when HitFix learned that Fox was meeting with other directors to take over the job. The reason for this happening was that Singer was already ...

Click to continue reading Bryan Singer Officially Not Directing X-Men: First Class

After the great news of Bryan Singer signing on to direct X-Men: First Class and the possibility of involvement with Wolverine 2 and X-Men 4, Singer may be too busy to take the job

Just when things were looking a little brighter for the X-Men film franchise, somebody had to throw a wrench into the mix. After writing a two-part feature about the future of the X-Men based on a large LA Times interview with director Bryan Singer and producer Lauren Shuler Donner, it seems there’s a chance what was discussed about Singer’s involvement in X-Men: First Class may not come to fruition as planned.

In December, Bryan Singer and his own writer were confirmed to take on X-Men: First Class but according to a HitFix exclusive today, 20th Century Fox met with at least two directors last week for the First Class gig, a job that Singer was locked for. The article describes the two potential replacements as “good names, guys who either have ...

Click to continue reading Bryan Singer NOT Directing X-Men: First Class?

The LA Times Blog posted a slightly shortened version of their lengthy editorial on the X-Men, featuring an interview with Bryan Singer and X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner. The full version will appear in the Sunday Calendar section of the Los Angeles Times tomorrow.

There was a lot of info to soak in from this piece so on Thursday, we looked at it from the standpoint of the status and plan for X-Men: First Class and now we’ll look at the other X-Men projects that Bryan Singer may be involved with for Fox studios: X-Men 4 and Wolverine 2.

While the media world has been heating up along with the production of several films for both Disney’s Marvel Studios and Warner Bros.’ DC Entertainment, it’s been a little cold on the X-Men news front for Fox Studios.
Mike Dougherty, director of the long-delayed and mistreated Trick ‘r Treat and co-writer of X-Men 2 joined the /Filmcast over the weekend and in their special “After Dark” segment, where they talk about whatever’s on their mind, their conversation hit on the interesting subject of X-Men 3, for which Dougherty and Singer were not a part of, but would have been had Singer not swung over to DC to make Superman Returns (for which Dougherty helped write).

In the audio clip, Dave Chen, Adam Quigley and Devindra Hardawar bring up the subject the X3 and quiz Dougherty on his thoughts of the movie, for which he answered reservedly and professionally.
Everett Bradford put up a YouTube video to demonstrate what he calls “The Prometheus Device” and since then, it’s been popping up on geek and tech sites all over the web.

The device emulates what we see from the character of Pyro in X-Men 3: The Last Stand, sans his power to manipulate the fire once launching it out of his palm. Check out the demo video for the neat-but-incredibly-dangerous device below.

I’m impressed by both the device, its functionality and the bravery of its user, Mr. Bradford. I expect this dude will easily get a job with this spreading all over the net like wild fire. Get it?

A few days back, we put up part one of “The Next X-Men Films” series, our look into the future of Fox Studio’s growing and financially successful movie series based on Marvel’s mighty mutants. This was based on quotes from Empire’s recent feature on Lauren Shuler Donner, producer of all films X-Men related, and today we’ll look at the other two anticipated films she spoke about.

In Part One we discussed Wolverine 2, the most-likely-to-happen solo flick out of Fox’s development slate as well as X-Men: First Class, the prequel to Bryan Singer’s first X-Men which is currently in its writing stages with Josh Schwartz penning the script.

Now, it’s time to look at two other popular character solo movies that are in early stages of development: Deadpool and X-Men Origins: Magneto. ...

Click to continue reading The Next X-Men Films Part Two: Deadpool, Magneto

The folks at Empire had a chance to speak with Lauren Shuler Donner, producer of all films X-Men related, at the press junket for the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine on Blu-ray and they discussed the future of the franchise.

The feature that Empire put together on the interview was broken down into four sections for each of the movies: Wolverine 2, X-Men: First Class, Deadpool, and Magneto. We’ll go through and discuss each, passing to you the key things Donner says and giving our thoughts on it and how it relates to what we expected to see from these movies since their inception.

To start, here’s the latest on Wolverine 2 and X-Men: First Class…

There’s been plenty of talk about the future of the X-Men franchise in recent times leading up to and after the financial success of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to kick off the summer of 2009. That hefty $85 million opening weekend helped push a Deadpool spin-off for Ryan Reynolds into motion as well as the early development of other spin-offs, prequels and even a sequel to the X-Men trilogy. That’s right, an X-Men 4 is in the early stages of planning.

In addition to the speculation of future installments to the franchise, there’s been buzz about the return of one of the folks responsible for helping kickstart the live-action series of X-Men films, Bryan Singer. We know that he’s interested and that X-producer Lauren Shuler Donner is too. But just how realistic is it?

The news the other day about producer Lauren Schuler Donner hinting at the beginnings of plans for an X-Men 4 movie (and a movie based on The New Mutants) got me thinking of some of the infinite possibilities for the next X-Men installment.

I could go on and on about stories and characters I’d like to see, but keeping to the basics, I’ll discuss some of the issues from the existing X-trilogy that need to be rectified going forward with the next movie, should it come to fruition.

The X-Men franchise has a bright future on the silver screen. With multiple projects in their early stages of development and several given the greenlight after the financial success of X-Men Origins: Wolverine to kick off this summer, there seems to be no end in sight for what the future may hold of Fox Studio’s hot property.

I’ll bet Disney wishes they could have picked up this film license in their acquisition of Marvel…

Aside from solo films for Magneto and Deadpool, and the prequel team-up film X-Men: First Class, we might be getting a movie based on the New Mutants comic line and… a possible X-Men 4?

Have you ever wanted to look deep into the dark recesses of a comic book movie director’s mind – nay – heart? You don’t have to look much further than the interview StarPulse.com recently held with director Brett Ratner. The Q&A session was mostly a junket to build hype for Ratner’s upcoming film The Shooter Series, but also touched on Beverly Hills Cop 4 and his thoughts on comic book fans, and it’s that last part I want to focus on.

There are sites out there (that we are most certainly friends with and fans of) that regularly rip Ratner and his films a new one. Considering how great the first two films were, the third was woeful in comparison. While most people tend to blame Brett Ratner, I blame the suits at Fox.

Ratner isn’t a bad director, in fact I quite like him, he knows how to make a good popcorn flick, and his stab at a Hannibal Lecter film was much better than Ridley Scott’s. Yes, you did read that correctly.

The Last Stand was ruined by a release date and Fox’s wish stick a finger up at Bryan Singer, who bailed from the franchise to direct Superman Returns (a film that I really like).

Now that the money grabbers at Fox have realized that it’s just too expensive to continue with the X-Men franchise in its original incarnation, they’ve apparently decided to milk the cash cow my going ...

Click to continue reading X-Men: Straight to DVD?

I haven’t updated news on the upcoming Wolverine movie because really there hasn’t been too terribly much to talk about. Now a few things have piled up so here’s a summary of where things stand at the moment…

The young boy in the image above has been selected to play the very young version of Wolverine before he became the adamantium skeleton-covered, claw wielding fellow we all know and love. Before that his name was Logan and it seems that they’ll be going further back than I thought with the character. Considering the addition of the 11 year old in the photo above with the unusual name of Kodi Smit-McPhee (parents, what WERE you thinking?) the recently revealed title seems appropriate:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

My first thought ...

Click to continue reading Wolverine Title, Release Date And Younger Version

Here’s a grab bag of news items for you today:

A couple of clips from Hostel: Part II. At least in the second clip there’s a reason the girl running through the woods falls down. MTV Movies Blog

The Incredible Hulk: The Hulk will only be 9 feet tall and will not get any bigger than that. Superherohype

There are more X-Men-based movies to come, but not necessarily the full team. Spinoffs? Superherohype

Matt Damon says he’s done with the Bourne films. Personally I think it’s a good idea, especially if Bourne Ultimatum closes the circle. Leave it at a great trilogy and move on. /Film

There’s a trailer out for National Treasure: Book of Secrets (aka National Treasure 2). Another “out there” plot. I liked the first one as a popcorn movie, but I ...

Click to continue reading Movie News Grab Bag
