A Where’s Waldo? Movie is in the works, can you spot it?

MGM is once again plundering our collective childhood and has tapped screenwriter Todd Berger to write the script for a live-action movie about the sneaky and beloved wanderer Waldo. No names have been attached to star thus far.

The “Where’s Waldo?” books - a creation of famed illustrator Martin Handford – feature Waldo dressed in a red-and-white shirt and carrying a magic walking stick, hidden in plain sight in large crowded scenes. One advantage to a Waldo movie is that there is wide margin in the way the character can be interpreted.

Details are murky given the film’s slated release date for summer 2015. Berger still has to finish up It’s a Disaster, a comedy he wrote, directed, and stars in with Julia Stiles, ...

It’s been over a year since we first reported that a Where’s Waldo? movie was being made, and we’re fairly sure that a lot of people hoped that this project would be one that simply fell into development limbo, never to return.

After all, with board games and toys like Monopoly, Stretch Armstrong, Risk and Battleship also getting the movie treatment, people have been pretty vocal about the fact that this latest Hollywood trend is one they wouldn’t mind seeing vanish before it even fully begins….Especially when you’re talking about a feature film based on a children’s picture book.

Live-Action ‘Where’s Waldo?’ Film Headed to Theaters

For over 20 years, children (and adults) around the world have lost themselves in the red and white world of Martin Handford’s Where’s Waldo? books. Now,thanks to the efforts of Universal and Illumination Entertainment, the adventures of the bespectacled world traveler will be adapted to the big screen for a live-action family film.

According to reports, Universal claimed the rights to ‘Waldo’ after Paramount placed the project in turnaround. Warner Brothers was also in the running to acquire the project.

Since the Where’s Waldo? book series launched in 1987, the books have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. But will book sales translate into ticket sales? Given that the books were nothing more than a game of hide-and-seek, it will be interesting to see what kind of plot emerges for this film. On the other hand, it will likely ...
