This is a discussion post about the Warehouse 13 season finale and the season in general. I feel compelled to warn you that if you’re a time-shifted viewer, you may wish to return after viewing the episode since I’ve included some generic references that could SPOIL it for you!

The season finale of Warehouse 13 continued the conflict between James MacPherson (Played by Roger Rees) and the Warehouse. Though at times, I’m not sure if he’s ticked at Artie (Saul Rubinek), ticked about all the years on the job that he “wasted” or just wants to snag and sell artifacts. (I think we know the answer to that last one!)

We were given some more background information on Artie and James and we got to see a few new cool artifacts in use.

We even watched the mysterious Mrs. Frederic (CCH Pounder) get down to some real business in the Warehouse. I didn’t think she did that, but then again, if you want it done right…

Artie, Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) were out in the field together chasing their tails while on the trail of MacPherson. And unbeknownst to everyone (viewers included), MacPherson had an insider from the Warehouse working for him. Dang!

Disconnect?

Do you remember in the beginning of the season when Pete’s “intuition” was flaunted for us? Did anyone notice how it seemed to evaporate after the first few episodes? Well, at least that’s what I’ve been feeling and in the season finale, we finally got to see it back in action once again. And yet, everyone is concerned about his “gut feeling” but no one pays heed. Dudes, if I had someone who had a “gut feeling” ability, I’d BE LISTENING! I think it would best serve the show if they employed his talent but put the Warehouse up against someone or something that negated it, rather than completely and outright ignore the talent they went to so much trouble to create for this character.

For me, I think the best part was the Bronze Sector of the Warehouse.

The Bronze Sector is where evil people are put that need to be removed from society. Nice. When Pete asked about the section, he was wondering if people like Hitler, Mussolini or Michael Vick were there. LOL. Pete’s a cookie addict and he’s not a fan of Vick’s past. I like him! But did I miss something or did they just completely gloss over a great opportunity and not make mention of who might be in there?

Though it was different, I felt like “bronzing” was tagging my brain and reminded me of the Carbonite process Han Solo was put through in Star Wars, only with less screaming.

Despite MacPherson being bronzed, he still put into affect the unthinkable and left us with a humdinger of a cliff-hanger that will definitely keep us on the edge of our seats until the next season.

I wasn’t really expecting a cliff-hanger from this show, but I guess it was a twist or two that we didn’t expect that kept the episode as fresh as could be.

Bored?

Are we getting bored with the show yet? The first part of the season was new and we were dished lots of goodies at a decent pace but then we started to get a little bit more in the stand-alone episode mode and even though I like the show, it was a bit slow for me at times, and I couldn’t really put my finger on it.

Overall, I enjoyed this new show and Warehouse 13 helped put Syfy on the map with the media as they kept hitting ratings records. At the time of this writing, I haven’t seen any numbers yet; last month when I tried to sign up for a media Nielsen account to have access to the data, they referred me to their RSS feed, which wasn’t what I was looking for. I’m not surprised.

So weigh-in gang. What did you think of the finale and the season itself?

I keep wondering after each weeks telecast of Warehouse 13 if I should wait, or keep reporting each new record the show breaks each week?

Syfy’s newest show has brought down the house of cards and has set another record. The 6th episode of the fantasy TV series Warehouse 13 brought in 4.4 million viewers. This makes it the most-watched regular series telecast in the 17-year history of the network. Though I think last nights episode may put a damper in the ratings momentum. From what I hear, many found it a bit drab.

Today we got news for you on a former Deadwood actor whose getting Lost this season; the gang at 24 are wondering if their eighth day will be their last; Syfy will be re-opening the doors to Warehouse 13 next season; Heroes has a new poster; Apollo plays in the Dollhouse; Star Wars will soon be on TV; and ABC gets room at Clive Barker’s Hotel.

All that, and we bid farewell to a TV News Legend (see above). Let’s get to it:

.

LOST

Lost will be adding a new cast member to its sixth and final season. Deadwood’s John Hawkes (he played Jewish entrepreneur Sol Star) will join the Lost crew as Lennon, a ““Scruffy, edgy, charismatic, and slightly stir-crazy…spokesperson/translator for the president of a foreign corporation. He’s a wily negotiator, and far more powerful than his lowly position would seem to indicate.”

Hmmm… Could he be working for the nefarious Charles Widmore? Or perhaps the mysterious Hanso Corporation?

Guess we’ll find out for (semi-)sure when Lost returns next year.

Source: THR

.

24

Apparently, the 24 cast and crew are preparing Jack Bauer’s next day out to POSSIBLY be his last. In the event that Fox chooses to ax the show after its eighth season, the producers are filming several alternate season-enders that will either tie off the saga of Jack Bauer for good, or leave room for the show to live to fight another day.

Said producer Evan Katz: “We’re flexible. We have a scenario that would work well if the show ends. But we also have scenarios where it could go on.”

Hmmm… when DOES Jack Bauer start to overstay his welcome? If this upcoming season is as good as the last one, maybe it would be a good idea to go out on a high note. Judging from his nervous behavior at the Comic-Con 24 panel, star Kiefer Sutherland may be ready to move on…

24 returns in January.

Syfy’s Summer series Warehouse 13 has been something of a hit: after debuting in July to 3.5 million viewers, the cable series has managed to steadily however around the 3.7 million viewers mark every week.

Those strong numbers have made it a no-brainer for Syfy to order an additional 13 episodes of the show; Warehouse 13 season two will premiere next summer.

Sorry W13 fans, I know that’s a long time to wait – but you got to give the rest of us time to catch up / catch on!

Some cast members have been added to Steven Spielberg’s unnamed alien pilot on TNT, we have an interesting tidbit on Disney and a quick, condensed look at last week’s Summer TV ratings.

Doctor Who Recognized By Guinness

The series Doctor Who has just been recognized as the most successful sci-fi series by the Guinness Book of World Records.

They base this on quantifiable items such as ratings, sales of DVD’s, iTunes traffic and books sold. Longevity of the series was also part of the recognition process.

Doctor Who premiered in 1963 and has had a sporadic but continued successful existence.

What sci-fi show has the longest consecutive running record? Stargate SG-1. It had a consecutive 10-year run.

Syfy Channel News

Warehouse 13 is proving itself a solid starter for the newly renamed network.

Warehouse 13 (WH13) hit new highs for a scripted series on the network. They pulled in 1.8 million adults between the ages of 25-54 and 1.4 million adults aged 18-49.

In the 9 p.m. hour of Tuesday, Syfy actually delivered more viewers between that ages of 25-54 than ABC did, and more male viewers than both ABC and Fox.

It was the top scripted drama on cable to boot.

But that’s not all.

As numbers come in from the Live+7 ratings, (That’s live viewers plus DVR playback over the course of 7 days), the premiere of WH13 brought in approximately 4 million viewers. Both WH13 and Eureka are doing some serious ratings numbers.

In fact, with both WH13 and Eureka, Syfy pulled in their best July numbers ever in its 17-year history. Even Ghost Hunters International is doing its part and bringing in 1.9 million viewers.

Right now, it seems that their plans are on track to grow the network. We just have to see if it will hold up over time.

If Warehouse 13 keeps going strong like it has, they’ve got a chance.

.

Burn Notice Gets Renewed

Michael Westen is going to continue to give us instructional guidance on how to make things for another 16 episodes.

That’s how many episodes USA Network has ordered for Burn Notice. USA also ordered 16 episodes for the show Royal Pains.

Both shows are doing great, pulling in between 4 and 7 million viewers each.

Jamie Bamber (Captain Lee ‘Apollo’ Adama in Battlestar Galactica) is going to be a guest star on the season 2 premiere of Dollhouse.

Bamber’s character will be engaged in an assignment with Echo (Eliza Dushku) and her new handler, Paul Ballard (Tahmoh Penikett). Wha!? That’s all we have.

Season 2 will premiere on Friday, Sept 25th 2009 on Fox.

Spielberg’s Alien Invasion Gets More Cast

Steven Spielberg’s unnamed alien invasion project that’s coming to TNT has more cast hoping on board.

Moon Bloodgood, Jessy Schram, Seychelle Gabriel and Maxim Knight will be joining Noah Wyle on the alien invasion pilot.

The show takes place just after aliens have wiped out most of humanity and focuses on a ragtag group of soldiers and people led by Noah Wyle as they struggle against the occupying alien invasion.

Is it me, or does this sound like something from Battlestar Galactica?

Disney To Charge For Content

Disney is looking to start charging for it’s online content that ranges from movies to games and TV shows.

The premise is that they’re looking at a single web site that may be subscription based that will provide these products.

They’re already making revenue off their ventures on Hulu and iTunes and I suspect that the performance of these two outlets is what prompted this decision.

In what I find to be a rather insightful statement by CEO Robert Iger, he said:

“consumers spend $5 an hour at theaters to see movies, 75 cents an hour to read books, newspapers and magazines and 50 cents an hour to watch cable and satellite TV, but only 25 cents an hour to surf the Internet.”

“There’s plenty of room for people to spend more money on things that they’re doing online.”

Plenty of room? Is that how they see us. Web surfers with plenty of room to spend more money? Nice. Real nice.

Summer TV Ratings

Of the top 20 broadcast shows last week, NCIS was the best rated scripted drama in 3rd with 9.7 million viewers. The Mentalist was 4th with 9.6 mil viewers & CSI: Miami brought in 8.5 million viewers.

Outside the top 10, CSI was 11th with 7.8 mil viewers, Law And Order:SVU was 12th and CSI:NY was in 15th.

On the cable side of things, Burn Notice was the top dog with 6.8 million viewers, The Closer was 2nd with 6.6 million viewers. NASCAR was 3rd, Royal Pains 4th with 6.2 mil. and NCIS was 8th with 4.9 mil. viewers.

Jack Kenny said he’s never seen a show supported by a network like Syfy is supporting this one.

We saw a short preview showing Allison Scagliotti in her new role.

As it’s been hinted, most things are possible within the show, and as if that’s not enough, Artie is going to go up against a former partner. In other words, Artie will have a Moriarity, making the show darker and better.

The creative team says they use real artifacts to base their stories around and then branch out from there. They quietly thank Wikipedia and “the Google,” as Kenny calls it.

They say that Saul tends to call the creative team with ideas.

The unique part of this show is that Syfy is looking for a fantasy adventure with WH13 rather than the usual sci-fi type story line. They want to make stories that are entertaining and not take themselves too seriously in the process.

McClintock and Kelly get along rather well. The show was screening pairs of actors to check on actor chemistry and they had the “benefit” of hanging together for about 90 minutes in the audition waiting room and got comfortable with each other.

McClintock says he has two little children like chicks chirping for food and he was very nervous for the auditions and Kelly was the calming factor. At least that’s how it looked to him.

The two characters have a yin-yang kind of relationship. While Pete follows his gut, Kelly’s character is more rigid and uses her intellect. They handle things in two very different ways.

Joanne Kelly said they want to have fun, but be grounded in reality and calls this show a procedure-dramedy.

Saul says Artie has a cool office but it’s lonely and now he has a partner in the form of Claudia.

Claudia (Allison Scagliotti) is looking to find her brother. With the introduction of her character, we have someone that Artie can work with and we also have a punkwood vs steampunk technology environment with these two, now that Claudia brings the punkwood to the Warehouse office.

Saul asked the crowd how many folks in the panel have seen at least 1 episode and everyone raised their hand. He asked who has seen 3 episodes – everyone. Jack Kenny cheated. He asked how has seen all 12? He raised his own hand.

The senior VP of Syfy, Mark Stern, was there. Eddie called him up. Eddie asked about a 2nd season, Stern asked the audience and of course the crowd went crazy.

Stern said we need to get the word out because next year, we need to be in Ballroom 20. Jack kenny said “Mark? Imagine greater!”

An audience member asked if there were any ideas of a cross-over with Eureka. They thought it would be fun, but the decision will have to come from Syfy. (BTW: Some of the cast of Eureka were present. I recognized faces, but no names. Sorry.)

Someone wondered if we will ever see the tea kettle ferret again, but they only said that they hope so.

Someone asked Saul how much of the character is in him. He said you can’t do 11 hour days making movies or television shows without being yourself. After a while, writers write for who the actor is. You can’t do this without that happening.

A Little Insight And History:

Mark Shepard (Battlestar Galactica) will play a Regent. A regent is one who is in charge of the Warehouse and Mrs. Frederick.

Warehouse 13 is the 13th iteration of the Warehouse. The Warehouse was started by Alexander The Great. The Warehouses are located in the nation of the Earth that is in power at the time. Hence, today, it’s in the U.S..

And of course, at the end of the Warehouse 13 panel, we were hit with that Syfy ad again. It’s following me everywhere! Last thing we got was a Eureka ad.

In my review of Syfy’s Warehouse 13 premiere, I said the advertising for the show did not do the show justice, and it had an excellent method of story telling to develop the story and the characters in a mature and compelling fashion.

This week, the second episode not only held up the quality of writing that the premiere did, but may have actually improved on the premiere.

The continued character development wasn’t overboard and they engaged the story of the week well while a new and mysterious issue presented itself in the background of it all. (What did happen to Artie?)

Not to mention that Artie had a really cool camera and that football made a return appearance. Don’t they have the coolest Steampunk tech?

For me, the show will keep me coming back and I am betting I can say the same for at least a few million cable viewers. Warehouse 13 dominated the ratings for its cable primetime Tuesday slot, bringing in 3.4 million viewers.

In fact, for the 9 p.m. hour, Syfy drew more viewers than ABC which was airing Better Off Ted, and on cable, WH13 beat out The Cleaner, Hawthorne, Saving Grace and Rescue Me.

That’s some serious competition and Syfy took them out with their new show – The first show they chose to premiere along with their new network brand name.

In case you don’t know, Warehouse 13 follows two Secret Service agents who find themselves transferred to a massive, top-secret storage facility in South Dakota which houses strange artifacts, mysterious relics, fantastical objects and supernatural souvenirs that have been collected by the U.S. government.

The Warehouse’s caretaker, Artie (Saul Rubinek), charges Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself.

Warehouse 13 airs Tuesdays @ 9pm on Syfy.

Saul Rubinek as Artie Nelsen, Joanne Kelly as Myka Bering, Eddie McClintock as Pete Lattimer

The short of it: The advertising for Warehouse 13 did not do the show justice, but then, I’m not sure how they could have capitalized on an ad campaign for a show that had a decent, slow developing story line.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed in this new show, Warehouse 13 (WH13) that is leading the newly renamed Syfy network programming charge. They didn’t force feed us instant character development (there was plenty of conversational exchange that accomplished that) and story lines for the characters weren’t shoved in our face just for the sake of making things happen.

Everything progressed at a decent pace and I found myself engaged by the story the show was telling.

Will I be watching it next week? Read on to find that out.

The 22-minute opening teaser segment was engaging enough to keep me pretty focused as we were introduced to Secret Service agents Myka Bering and Pete Lattimer.

They agents weren’t incredibly engaging at the beginning, but we didn’t know them right away. I was just along for the ride, just like they were. If you were expecting to see instant action, then you might have come away feeling disappointed.

As the 2-hour premiere carried on, Bering and Lattimer developed more depth and (to me) became more interesting.

Pete has a type of sense, a fifth sense or spider-sense and Myka has an eye for detail. This is what makes them a good team. Pete may step right into a bear trap if someone said there are cookies in there, but Myka would see the bear trap and stop him.

Both agents were recruited behind the scenes and at first they had no clue what was going on. Myka was ticked to say the least. This did not look like the fast lane to somewhere important. But as the case evolved, she became slowly and begrudgingly pulled into the job at WH13, while Pete jumped on board because of all the cool things there.

They didn’t like each other at first, but as they came to recognize and respect one another’s talents, they also came together as a team. And I’m glad for that because I don’t think I could have used yet another sparring mixed-gender team always at odds.

The caretaker of Warehouse 13, Artie (Saul Rubinek) uses super-antiquated equipment that was reminiscent of steampunk-like gear. Equipment that was invented many years ago, but is near on par with modern-day equipment. More or less.

Saul Rubinek’s delivery is a bit low key from what I remember of him from past parts, and I enjoy it. It was almost too low key, but I think he’s got a lot to bring to the table, as this character just reeks of backstory.

CCH Pounder plays the ageless Mrs. Frederic. From what I see, she’s running the ultimate secret government programs and would seem to be the one who staffs this incredibly über-secret storage facility. And from what we’ve seen so far, she’s been around for a very long time, and has not aged a bit. The way Pounder played Mrs. Frederic, I’m thinking that I wouldn’t want to mess with her.

I hope they expound on Mrs. Frederic a little more.

.

Did The Story Deliver?

WH13 is more about the story between all components of the episode interlaced with subtle tones of humor.

What I mean by that is that the case they worked on in this 2-hour premiere tapped into different aspects of the characters, showing us more of what makes our Secret Service agents tick, whether they liked it or not.

Like I said, it’s good story telling and that’s a good thing. I don’t think I’m watching this show for the action scenes. Who ever choreographs the fighting or the editing of the fight scenes does not agree with my sense of flow as the physical altercations are more chop-edited than fluid. And for now, that’s the only real gripe I can come up with.

I’m cutting them some slack because it’s a brand new show, and, so far, nothing stood out and screamed for me to run and change the channel.

.

Yes, I Liked It And I’m Not Alone

I did a quick Twitter search after the show and the first 20 “reviews” that I could pull out of the noise leaned heavily towards the positvie. Of those 20 tweets, only 3 of them were upset in some fashion, but I’m not sure what they were expecting.

At one point in the Tweets, WH13 was compared to an older show called Special Unit 2, which I used to find entertaining… I didn’t say good, just entertaining. Me, I’m seeing a bit of Indiana Jones as they try to figure out what artifact they’re after, and Ghost Busters as they collect the artifacts in special containment units. There are lots of other shows I could pull into the mix to describe WH13, but why. The show should stand on its own and I think it will. I’m sure those critical of it will manage to make all possible comparisons.

.

In Closing

First, I hope the cow and the football stay in this show in some fashion. I can’t wait to see how they explain the football, and there has got to be more to the cow than meets the eye. It had good comedic timing.

Second, I can’t wait for that ad for the new Syfy network to change or stop. It just doesn’t make sense to me and interrupts my flow of the show. I get what they’re trying to say, but I’m not sure taking that much time to say it is going to work. I don’t know. I’m not the expert on musical commercials.

Third, there will be a lot of guest stars from other past Syfy shows passing through. Joe Flannigan, Tricia Helfner, Michael Hogan are just a few off the top of my head. It will be good to see them on Syfy again.

Fourth, Syfy is pronounced exactly like it used to be when it was Sci-Fi. Now you know.

Yes, I will be watching WH13 again. If it retains or improves on the how they deliver the story and create character interaction and development, this should be a hit.

Many in the Twitter community have voiced their enjoyment of the show. I pretty much enjoyed it. Now, Screen Rant readers, it’s your turn to fill in things I haven’t touched on or let us know what you thought of Warehouse 13.

Warehouse 13 is about two Secret Service agents played by Eddie McClintock (Bones) and Joanne Kelly (Vanished, The Dresden Files) who get themselves transferred to a massive top-secret warehouse located in South Dakota.

The warehouse stores odd and strange artifacts that have been collected by the U.S. government. Think about it like that giant warehouse we saw at the end of the first Indiana Jones movie when they took the ark to a storage facility.

The warehouse is run by Artie, played by Saul Rubinek. He’s the one that sends the agents out to retrieve purported artifacts that have supernatural or paranormal properties.

Artie also has the agents assist him in controlling the warehouse. Eh?

Sci-Fi is pulling no punches. The pair of actors playing agents are relatively new to me but I’m seeing this ensemble as being led by the reputably entertaining Rubinek. Rubinek always plays quirky characters and plays them well.

The unique part about Warehouse 13 is the guest cast list that has a bevy of known actors passing through the sound stages of the show.

Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis), Tricia Helfer, Michael Hogan and Mark Sheppard (All from Battlestar Galactica), James Naughton (Gossip Girls), Roger Rees (Cheers), Joe Morton, Erica Cerra and Niall Matter (All from Eureka) and Ivan Sergei (Crossing Jordan).

With Rubinek at the head of this cast, I envision quirky attempts at a funny show. It’s what I’ve seen him do but I’m not sure how that will pan out? Maybe it won’t be the tone of the show afterall.

What do you think of this show?

Warehouse 13 will premiere July 7 with a two-hour pilot at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
