For 68 years, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been celebrating their favorites in film and television with the Golden Globe Awards.

Once again, the multifaceted and generally hilarious Ricky Gervais will be serving as host of tonight’s gala. While those in attendance will be filled with anticipation about whether or not they will take home the award in their chosen category, viewers at home will be anxiously waiting to see how far Gervais will push the comedic envelope with his monologue and numerous ad-libs throughout the night.

With 25 separate categories having to fit within tonight’s given time slot, something tells me that Gervais will be moving things along at a swift pace – all while sipping from his iconic glass a beer that always remains not-so-hidden beneath his podium.

-

There is no getting around the fact that sequels to popular movies are a way of life in Hollywood. If a movie has a strong box office showing then, inevitably, a sequel (or two) won’t be too far behind.

A sequel to a film based on a series of books is to be expected: The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Twilight Saga, as are films that are usually cheap and easy to produce: Saw, Friday the 13th, or Nightmare on Elm Street. Also films that have a well established mythos: Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman, Superman are almost always expected to have multiple sequels.

Celebrities Josh Duhamel, Katie Holmes, and Blair Underwood dragged themselves from the comfort of their beds early this morning to announce the nominations for this year’s other big cinematic awards, the Golden Globes.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has unveiled its nominations for the 68th annual Golden Globes and, like any year’s crop of nominees, there are a few surprise choices, some unexpected snubs, and a number of highly anticipated selections.

Leading the movie pack with seven nominations is the period drama The King’s Speech, which began to garner serious awards buzz back when it toured the festival circuit this past fall. David Fincher’s The Social Network has already snagged a handful of critic’s choice awards and secured six Gold Globe nods, matching that of this month’s true-life boxing drama, The Fighter.

This week:

Jackass 3D hits the top spot at the box office while Bruce Willis sees Red; J.J. Abrams is Infinitely Polar Bear; Samuel L. Jackson heads Holmes with Hawkshaw; Joe Carnahan tackles Umbra; Catherine Hardwicke moves from Edward & Bella to Romeo & Juliet; Noomi Rapace sets sail on The Last Voyage of The Demeter; Luke Evans and Alice Eve join John Cusack in The Raven and there’s lots more.

After several weeks of serious adult-skewed films holding the top spot at the box office, it looked like audiences wanted to let loose and relax by watching grown men getting hit in the crotch with the full 3D experience. This thirst for pain is the reason that the number one position was filled by Jackass 3D (read our review here). The $20 million budgeted comedy brought in a stellar $49.5 million, easily capturing the number one spot.

The infamous Gordon Gekko returns to the big screen after 23 years - but are Michael Douglas and Shia LeBeouf enough to make a new 'Wall Street' movie worth the wait?

Screen Rant’s Vic Holtreman reviews Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (or just plain old Wall Street 2 if you don’t want such a mouthful) is a movie by Oliver Stone that tries to do for the mortgage lending bank meltdown what he did for corporate raiders in 1987 in the original Wall Street. Michael Douglas returns a bit worse for wear after spending almost a decade in prison, and instead of a young Charlie Sheen as the protege we have Shia LeBeouf.

Personality-wise, Shia (Jake Moore) is an analogue to Charlie Sheen’s Bud Fox from the first film: Young, aggressive and ambitious – but with a sense of ethics. He’s been deeply interested in finance ...

Click to continue reading ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ Review

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. A few of them even stand the chance of being pretty good.

Of course the Fall movie landscape has been changing pretty radically in the last few years: September is now a “showcase for unique genre films” instead of just a studio dumping ground ...

Click to continue reading Screen Rant’s 2010 Fall Movie Preview

It’s been a somewhat lackluster summer movie season – with only a few highly anticipated films living up to their hype. While box office numbers are still strong there were plenty of high-profile films that failed to impress audiences.

The somewhat disappointing summer has left an empty void in a lot of moviegoers – a void that the Fall 2010 film season is prepped to fill.

We locked Screen Rant’s Mike Eisenberg in his production office, with only week old saltine crackers and water, until he successfully produced a Fall preview trailer worthy of the bar he set with his Ultimate 2010 Summer Movie Trailer.
It’s been twenty-two years since Oliver Stone introduced the world to Gordon Gekko and the now-infamous (and often misquoted) catch phrase, “Greed…for lack of a better word…is good” in his excellent financial drama Wall Street. The sequel, Wall Street: Money Never Sleep, recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in France and is receiving mixed reviews so far.

In a recent interview, Reuters spoke with writer/director Oliver Stone and asked him if we might see yet another sequel twenty-two years from now.

“Why not? We left it open at the end in a way on which we can hang a “Wall Street 3.” We’ll have Gekko back and maybe Josh Brolin, too.”

I’m a Michael Douglas fan, but in the year 2032 the actor will be 88 years old. I’m not sure how ...

Click to continue reading Oliver Stone Addresses Possibility of ‘Wall Street 3′

20th Century Fox (via Moviefone) has released two new clips from Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, director Oliver Stone’s followup to his 1987 hit, Wall Street.

The Wall Street sequel finds the corrupt Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) fresh out of prison and back in action as he joins forces with young stock market trader Jacob Moore (Shia LaBeouf) to take advantage of the increasingly unstable global economy.

This first clip features a scene in which the elderly Gordon recognizes a kindred unethical spirit in Jacob – a fellow who also happens to be engaged to Gekko’s estranged daughter, Winnie (Carey Mulligan).

Wall Street 2's release date has been pushed back from April to September. Is Fox positioning it for awards season, or is the film a dud?

Oliver Stone’s sequel film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps has been pushed back from its April 23rd release date, The Hollywood Reporter states.

Wall Street 2‘s new release date is going to be September 24, 2010. The question that now arises is: what does this delay say about the quality of the film (or lack thereof)?

For those who aren’t movie buffs, there are traditionally two months of the calender year that are typically used as dumping grounds for studios to unload their bad films: September and February (January is also questionable). Following that logic, Fox pushing Wall Street 2 back to September would suggest that the film didn’t go over so well – certainly not good enough for April, which has become the “ramp-up month” leading into the start of the summer blockbuster season.

Of course, some may assert ...

Click to continue reading Wall Street 2 Pushed Back to September

The international trailer for Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps has appeared online and unlike the slick, hard-rock preview we got in the Wall Street 2 teaser trailer, this new trailer has more of a laid back approach, letting us in on what the actual story of the film is all about.

Michael Douglas is back as Wall Street shark Gordon Gekko, now fresh out of prison (where he landed himself at the end of the first film) only to discover a world where his brand of greed has become the norm. Shia LaBeouf plays a young wannabe Wall Street player, who sees a path to some big money under Gekko’s wing.

Did I mention that LaBeouf’s character is also engaged to Gekko’s estranged daughter (the lovely Carey Mulligan)?

Courtesy of Gawker we’re getting a first look at the teaser trailer for Oliver Stone’s upcoming Wall Street sequel, Money Never Sleeps. The film has Michael Douglas reprising is Oscar-winning role as corporate shark Gordon Gekko, with Transformers star Shia LaBeouf starring as a younger corporate shark trying to swim through the cut-throat waters of Wall Street.

Also in the boardroom this time around are Josh Brolin, Frank Langella, Charlie Sheen, Susan Sarandon and actress Carey Mulligan, who plays Gekko’s estranged daughter and LaBeouf’s current love interest.

The trailer comes with a hard guitar riff soundtrack (it’s “Ricochet” by Shiny Toy Guns), scenes of Gordon Gekko (arrested at the end of the first film) finally being released from his stint in prison and – look at that! – a sight gag involving those ginormous old-school mobile phones.

Today, the Daily Mail released some photos taken from the set of Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps. While these aren’t the first photos we’ve seen pop up from the set, it is the first time we get to see photos of Michael Douglas’ first day reprising the roll of his iconic character, Gordon Gecko.

Not to give all the attention to Mr. “Fancy Pants” (That’s my nickname for Douglas. What? Sir enjoys fancy pants.), More photos were released showing Shia LaBeouf filming a scene with Frank Langella as they stroll through the park. In the film, Shia plays Jacob Moore, a young stockbroker with Langella as his mentor, Lewis Zabel.

Back to “Fancy Pants.” For those hoping to lessen Shia’s presence in the film’s sequel, you’re in luck as the film will also follow Gordon Gecko on the lecture circuit as an author after having spent 14 years in ...

Click to continue reading First Look at Michael Douglas in Wall Street 2

Not content with being one of the highest paid actors on television – Charlie Sheen is now set to reprise his role of Bud Fox in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps - the sequel to the Oscar-winning original.

The Two and A Half Men star will film a cameo in the sequel that is set to star the first rate cast of Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin, Susan Sarandon and Frank Langella.

The film, which starts shooting next week, follows LaBeouf’s Jake Moore as he romances Gordan Gekko’s (Douglas) daughter played by Carey Mulligan.

Alex Young, co-president of production at 20th Century Fox said:

“We sort of started over with the story of a young man who is at the center of it, and how he needs Gordon Gekko’s help to navigate those waters.”

While Stone may have a patchy record (although ...

Click to continue reading Money Never Sleeps For Charlie Sheen

Wall Street 2 continues to cast a surprisingly classy set of actors for a movie that’s subtitled Money Never Sleeps. Frank Langella and actress Carey Mulligan were both recently confirmed for the film; now comes word that acclaimed actress Susan Sarandon (The Lovely Bones) will be joining Oliver Stone’s production as well.

Sarandon will reportedly be playing the role of the mother to Shia LaBeouf’s young and upcoming Wall Street trader. If you didn’t already know, Michael Douglas will be reprising his Oscar-winning role as Gordon Gekko for the sequel.

What we know thusfar is that Wall Street 2 will focus on LaBeouf’s character as he tries to rise through the throat-cutting ranks of Wall Street. The young trader eventually falls under the dragon’s wing of Gekko (his wife’s estranged father), now out of prison ...

Click to continue reading Wall Street 2 Adds Susan Sarandon
