Bidding War for ‘Voltron’ Movie Underway

Hollywood has been attempting to launch a big-screen version of Voltron for several years, but complexities surrounding who exactly owned the rights to the property have prevented it from moving forward. After numerous false starts, it appears that all of the legal red tape has been cut and plans for the film may finally come to fruition.

Back in September, we learned that Atlas Entertainment was still determined to deliver a live-action Voltron movie. Producers Charles Roven & Richard Suckle had recently hired screenwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan, Doctor Strange) to take a crack at the material and some leaked concept art showcased the potential of their approach.

‘Voltron’ Movie Concept Art & Screenwriter Info

In July we got word that despite reports to the contrary, a Voltron movie is still in development over at Atlas Entertainment. Today we have the first evidence of what that movie – now being referred to as Voltron: Defender of the Universe – may look like, in the form of concept art that was secured exclusively by Joblo.

Back when we were hearing that the Voltron movie was still alive and kicking, we also got word that Atlas was close to snagging some screenwriters to bring the story to fruition. Now we also have word on just who those screenwriters are.

Producers Say ‘Voltron’ Movie is Still Alive

A few days ago we reported that plans for the live-action Voltron movie had collapsed and the emphasis was instead being placed on a new animated series.

Speaking to MTV, producers Richard Suckle and Ted Koplar of Atlas Entertainment were quick to deny this and assured fans that the Voltron movie is still in development. In fact, the duo claim that they’re very close to hiring a new screenwriter:

“We’ve been working over the last several months meeting with various screenwriters, and we’re actually on the cusp of securing an A-level screenwriter who’s going to write the “Voltron” movie. ‘Voltron’ Movie Scrapped; New Cartoon & Toys on the Way [Updated]

It’s been a tumultuous journey to the big screen for the live-action Voltron movie – and for the moment, that journey has come to an end.

Back in April it was announced that the project was entering reboot mode by tossing out all prior versions of the screenplay and searching for a new director. Max Makowski (Taboo) had been attached to direct up until that point, and Jeff Davis (Criminal Minds) had done a rewrite on a script by Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li).

Our friend “Thurston McQ” from Corona Coming Attractions sent us a friendly heads up regarding the status of Voltron, the iconic 80s cartoon about five people who pilot lion-shaped spaceships, which also happen to transform into a giant, sword-wielding robot.

The news is apparently good for animation fans – but not so good for movie lovers. Read on to find out more.

For a few years now there’s been some rumbling of a Voltron movie in the works. There are several things in Hollywood right now that are hot and popular topics: vampires, remakes, comic books and ROBOTS! As far back as I can remember, robots have always been popular in movies. Going back to the late 1940′s and early 1950′s when the science fiction boom really took off, robots were always involved in one form or another. Just quickly off the top of my brain I can think of “The Robot” from Lost in Space, Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, Mechagodzilla, of course Transformers and now Voltron.

‘Voltron’ Movie Set To Roar Into Theaters?

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Biz Blog, fan-favorite 80′s cartoon Voltron will finally go into film production thanks to Atlas Entertainment and producers Charles Roven, Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander. Atlas Entertainment acquired the rights to Voltron from St. Louis-based World Events Productions.

With the incredible success of Transformers and Transformers 2, I was beginning to wonder why Voltron was taking so long to the big screen. As we reported nearly a year ago, 20th Century Fox had the rights to Voltron, but dropped the film. Since that time, a number of production companies have vied for the rights to the feature, with Atlas coming out on top after Relativity Media could not get the project off the ground before their option expired.

Robot Chicken Meets Voltron In ‘Titan Maximum’

The brains behind the sci-fi, super-hero and action figure-stuffed animated comedy Robot Chicken are taking a spin-off to Saturn’s biggest moon with Titan Maximum.

Co-head writer/producer Tom Root and co-creator/executive producer Matthew Senreich created the spin-off series, which pits a collection of dysfunctional heroes and their Voltron-style assembled robot (pronounced “RO-bet,” if you’re cool and from the 1950s) against a solar system-conquering villain and crippling budget cuts. The comedy adventure’s animation will resemble Chicken’s stop motion style.

While Robot Chicken is a rapid-fire, short attention span-friendly sketch show, Titan will feature full plots per episode and an overall story arc for the series’ ongoing war of attrition.

Voltron Movie Still On The Way

20th Century Fox recently axed its live-action adaptation of 80′s cartoon classic, Voltron: Defender Of The Universe, leaving many fans of the series worried that they’d never see their favorite lion-bodied robot hit the silver screen. Well, you can chillax Voltron fanboys: your holy grail of 80′s cartoons isn’t quite DOA yet.

Film O Filia reports that Voltron is being eyed by financing and production venture Relativity Media (owned by super-producer Ryan Kavanaugh), which is currently in negotiations for rights to the film. Relativity plans to green-light Voltron under a more modest budget, using the same green-screen tech employed by director Zack Snyder to make his sword and sandals epic 300 look so cool.

Voltron Movie: Let The Copycatting Commence

Ok, so according to /Film development on the Voltron film started back in 2004, but there hasn’t been much talk on moving the production forward until the runaway (and confusing, to me) success of Michael Bay’s Transformers movie.

So let’s prepare the internets for the same sort of battle we saw with Transformers – with long-time, die-hard fans of the character railing against the live action film version and those who will think the movie version looks awesome.

Although I thought that for the most part Transformers stank, that doesn’t mean I’m opposed to movies about giant robots. Maybe they’ll get it right with Voltron: Defender of the Universe (the working title for the film) and actually have characters and a story that’s good, robots that don’t talk like 13 year olds and special effects ...
