It’s been a big week for Sony’s Columbia Pictures and fans of the Spider-Man franchise. A mere week ago we found that the studio has selected Gary Ross to direct and rewrite the upcoming Venom solo film. Ross has a long history with the studio and actor Tobey Maguire and he’s currently involved with the script of Spider-Man 4. While we later heard that Venom might be far off with Ross also being tipped to helm the Spielberg-less Matt Helm remake, there’s no slowing the Spidey franchise one way or another.

On the Peter Parker side of things, Raimi revealed a few days back that they’re planning for an early March start of production for Spider-Man 4 to meet their summer kick-off release date in 2011. That’s not all however, as more recently we reported on director Sam Raimi discussing the possible villains of Spider-Man 4.

Now, MTV is sharing the part of their interview with Raimi where he touches even more Spider-Man sequels in the pipeline, specifically the 5th and 6th installments. Read on after the jump for more!

In the interview, Raimi is directly asked if he will direct Spider-Man 5 & 6.

“Every time I make one of the ‘Spider-Man’ movies, I have to ask myself, is the character still intriguing to me?… Do I love the character? Am I dying to tell the next story of Peter Parker and Spider-Man?”

“And so far the answer has been yes.”

Spider-Man 5 & 6 are happening not long after Spider-Man 4 hits theaters whether Raimi’s involved or not. Since it seemed like such an effort for the studio to bring him back alongside the stars, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, I’m not sure I’m buying into the likelihood of him returning for more. If you want just one big reason why, just check out the ridiculous amount of upcoming and in-development projects he has listed on IMDB. He’s got too much else going on and he’s also responsible for helping adapt Warcraft to live-action which will no doubt kick off another major franchise.

He doesn’t need more Spider-Man and after the debacle of interference related to the production of Spider-Man 3 (hopefully and apparently rectified this time around), he’s got so many other things to look forward to.

On top of all of that, we know that James Vanderbilt’s scripts for Spider-Man 5 & 6 are being written so they can act as a quasi-reboot of the franchise should Raimi and crew not return. With the Venom solo project on its way down the road, the likely possibility of the cast not returning for a 5th Spider-Man, Raimi’s words on how they’re picking the villain of Spidey 4 as to not set up for a solo film, the ruining of Venom in his first on-screen appearance, and the need of the studio to fast-track these highly-profitable films, I don’t expect Raimi to be back in the director’s chair for Spider-Man 5.

According to their inside source, Gary Ross, the man who was just announced to write and possibly direct the Venom spinoff will not be working on that project next.

Instead, Ross will first be taking over the Matt Helm project from Steven Spielberg and it sounds like the Venom project is quite a ways off, despite earlier reports that had him starting on it after Spider-Man 4.

Matt Helm was a James Bond-esque franchise starring Dean Martin back in the 1960s and they’ve been trying to get a remake off the ground for a while with a messy development history in recent years. There was also a TV series in the 1970s also based on the novels written by Donald Hamilton. There are 27 books in the series, allowing for wide selection of material for the movie and possible sequels.

Who will star in the Matt Helm movie that’s hoped to spawn a new franchise? Well, after George Clooney passed and John Hamm fell through, it now sounds like Bradley Cooper (The Hangover) is the leading candidate. This role would certainly replace the missed opportunity of the growing star not getting cast as the lead in Green Lantern. With this role and The A-Team, Cooper could be one of the next big action stars.

If this all goes according to the reported plan, Venom won’t be around for a while, so how will Venom tie into the Spider-Man franchise?

Will it completely run its own course with no cross-over? I doubt it. The studio will want to use every available resource to make sure they bank as much coin as possible from the symbiotic anti-hero. Since the character of Venom has far less mass appeal than Spider-Man and since Gary Ross is involved in the scripts for both films, it’s fair to assume they will tie it into one of the Spider-Man films.

My guess is that since we know Spider-Man 5 & 6 are desired by Sony Pictures to speed into production after Spider-Man 4, and since Venom is not next up on Ross’ plate, perhaps the post-Spidey 4 interconnected films will act as a franchise reboot where they can have another chance at introducing the character, leading him into his own spin-off. After all, we reported yesterday that Raimi hinted that they’re not selecting Spider-Man 4 villains based on its previous movies or based on what spinoffs are in planning.

What do you make of news and how do you think Venom will fit into the Spider-Man world?

More as we hear it on all of these projects, at Screen Rant!

Sam Raimi has some ideas for the villain(s) in Spider-Man 4 - what about you?

Spider-Man 4 has been receiving plenty of buzz in recent times with announcements and confirmations of it going into production next year for a 2011 release. On top of that, we’ve had countless reports and speculation about what storylines it may follow, the start of development for Spider-Man 5 & 6, and discussions of what villains will be the focus of the fourth installment in the super successful superhero franchise.

MTV spoke with Sam Raimi and got the director to discuss a bit about the villains of Spider-Man 4 and the results of a fan poll they ran on the site which saw The Lizard and Carnage come out on top as the most desired villains, with the highest percentages from an unknown number of votes.

Raimi responded to the two top choices but couldn’t reveal who they’ve selected as the villainous characters are for the next Spider-Man adventure.

“I love the Lizard… There’s a great story there in the Marvel comic books about Dr. Connors. I’m less familiar with Carnage.”

After this, you could tell Raimi wanted to be more open on the topic, but he must remain tight-lipped for obvious reasons with shooting not even expected to begin until next March. After a long pause, Raimi followed up by saying “I’m not allowed to say at this point.”

Normally, I’d think that The Lizard would be an obvious choice and that the other would be a character not introduced into the franchise yet. I can pretty much guarantee Carnage will not be in Spider-Man 4. After what happened with Venom in Spider-Man 3, they’ll be leaving the symbiotic villains behind until the franchise restarts and/or the Venom solo film gets underway.

However, Raimi later explains that the next movie doesn’t have so much to do with a character introduced in the films so far or about intertwining with/setting up the Venom spinoff. This partially puts a damper on The Lizard’s full introduction.

Of course, he could just be intentionally misleading. It seems like too much of a missed opportunity to not have The Lizard finally make an appearance after seeing Dr. Curt Connors introduced and slightly developed over the last few films.

Raimi continued by elaborating on the goal of Spider-Man 4’s story and how the villain will fit into that plan.

“What we’re trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome… Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we’re trying this right now; we’re trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict.”

Variety reporter Mike Fleming is reporting that Columbia Pictures is in talks with Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) to direct and rewrite the upcoming Venom solo film. Ross’ name is not new to Sony and their Spider-Man-related flicks however, as back in July he was brought in to make rewrites on the Spider-Man 4 script.

Ross is an easy choice for Columbia Pictures because of his growing relationship with Sony (Sony Pictures Entertainment owns Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group) which includes his directing of a Lance Armstrong cycling film and his work on the in-development Tokyo Suckerpunch. Combined with his longstanding relationship with Tobey Maguire that includes writing and directing him twice in the films listed above. They’ll be pairing as Actor-Director for a third go with The Crusaders.

I have no idea what to expect from a Venom solo film but I can’t believe that it can match anywhere near the success of any of the Spider-Man movies. The character simply doesn’t have that mass appeal and after what happened with Venom in Spider-Man 3, I don’t know where they go from here. Unless of course they cross-over with Spider-Man…

The report states that Ross will begin work on Venom after the fourth Spidey installment finishes and that the film will likely be a fresh start for the brooding character. The lead actor will most likely be recast. Sorry, Topher Grace, but you may be fighting Predators instead anyway.

My prediction is that after Spider-Man 4, Maguire, Raimi and the rest of the existing crew will leave the franchise, giving room for Sony’s planned 5th and 6th installments which are currently being written by James Vanderbilt to act as a franchise restart if needed. That would allow them to tie the new take on Venom with the new start of Spider-Man, allowing them to do it the right way this time.

What do you think about the Venom project and what would you like to see from it? Do you think it’ll tie-in at all with Spider-man 4 or the following two sequels?

Spider-Man 4 opens May 6, 2011.

The last we heard on the Venom project from the writers was from back in April when they couldn’t comment on whether or not this incarnation of Venom would be the same as/related to the wasted version we saw in the highly disappointing Spider-Man 3.

In the interview, Reese and Wernick take questions on the status of the project and when the film could be in production.

So, What’s the latest on their scripts?

“We’ve written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they’re pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward,”

As for when the film going move into actual production, the writers said they weren’t sure and re-iterated that they’ve submitted their latest two drafts.

With Spider-Man 4 moving into production early next year for a summer, 2011 opening, fans are curious as to when we might expect this film – Could it come before or around the game time? Could the movies cross-over?

“We can’t really talk about that, unfortunately… Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what’s the next step.”

What we do know about the future Spider-Man movies are that Sony hired James Vanderbilt to pen scripts for Spider-Man 5 and 6. The interesting part about the news was that the scripts would act as a franchise reboot should Raimi and his cast not return for more after Spider-Man 4.

I’m not sure I expect to see Tobey Maguire want to do another after this. He seemingly wasn’t too interested in coming back for this fourth installment and the same can be said about co-star Kirsten Dunst.

Either way, Sony is sick of waiting so long between installments in their prized film franchise and with Tobey Maguire not seemingly interested in more installments and Sam Raimi’s rediculously busy schedule, I could see them pulling the trigger on the reboot idea.

On one side, Ross was likely chosen because of his growing relationship with Sony which includes his directing of a Lance Armstrong cycling film and his work on the in-development Tokyo Suckerpunch.

On the other side, Spider-Man 4’s script is getting yet another rewrite meaning there are major issues with it (probably due to what happened in Spider-Man 3). This leaves me wondering what direction the film will take after the last movie and how, or if, it will lead at all into the Venom spinoff movie we’ve heard a lot about.

If you were expecting to hear any official updates as to who the villain(s) may be in the next installment, expect to wait a little longer with this news.

With these rewrites, I hope we get a solid and polished story for the movie. I highly disliked Spidey 3 and this needs return to the form of the first two. However, the difference is that I would like to see more of a real villain this time. We’ve seen far too much of the same formula of “I’m not really a bad guy, science did this to me” villains who redeem themselves at the end.

I wonder what Sam Raimi’s involvement with the script and story is this time around…

Interestingly, the only two movies Ross has directed, Tobey Maguire has starred in: Pleasantville and Seabiscuit which were both good movies. On top of that, they have two in-development films coming up in Tokyo Suckerpunch and The Crusaders. That gives me some hope at least.

What do you think of this fourth installment getting another re-write? Are they just ensuring the quality or is it a big mess?

Spider-Man 4 is scheduled to begin production next year and open May 6, 2011, sharing the summer with other heroes including Thor, Green Lantern and Captain America.

Superhero Hype recently caught up with Rhett Resse and Paul Wernick, the two screenwriters who penned a first draft of the Venom spin-off for Sony Pictures. The resulting discussion yielded a few choice tidbits about how the screenwriters view Venom, and what Sony and Marvel may be envisioning for the project.

The big question I know is on Venom fans’ minds: will we be getting the crappy Spider-Man 3 Venom? Or will the spin-off finally get the character right?

I won’t jerk you around and keep you wondering: Neither Resse nor Wernick could talk about whether or not the Venom we get in the spin-off will be at all connected to the (hopefully dead) version of the character that appeared in Spider-Man 3. I know it’s a big point of contention for any REAL Venom fans who were likely just as disappointed in SM3’s half-assed treatment of the iconic villain as I was.

(I know that Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi was peeved about Marvel and Sony forcing Venom into the 3rd film. The only way Raimi would come back to direct Spider-Man 4 was if he was given back the total creative control he had in Spider-Man 1 & 2.)

From the sound of things so far, Resse and Wernick are fairly big fans of Venom, enough so that they took the proactive route, approaching Sony with a pitch for a Venom spin-off:

“Venom is something that we’re very fired up to be writing… We have turned in a draft and are waiting to hear back, so it’s early in the process. But it’s a thrill to be writing ‘Venom’ for obvious reasons.”

Of course, as with any Marvel property, there were a TON of sacred character and continuum guidelines (Wernick calls them “the 47 rules”) the screenwriters had to adhere to while writing the Venom script:

“Obviously, with a character like Venom there’s a ton of stuff to draw from… Then they had specific rules about the villain and the backstory and stuff like that, so there were certain things they wanted us… certain parameters they gave us. But largely we pitched them something and they liked it but they had changes, so we worked on the outline for a long time and then we wrote the script. So with Marvel and Sony and us it’s definitely very, very collaborative.”

On the one hand, I feel enthused that two guys who are fans of Venom are trying to do right by the character. On the other hand, I’m still pretty paranoid about Marvel and Sony mucking with Venom, after they did such a poor, poor, job with him in Spider-Man 3. The whole freaking movie should’ve been about the alien symbiote, “black Spider-Man” and the origin of Venom! Screw The Sandman and James Franco’s “amnesia!”

Topher Grace ruining playing Venom in Spider-Man 3.

I’m not going to get too heated, though. At this early stage, what’s the point? But I will remain wary, and with good reason: getting the same tongue lashing, psychotically mischievous Venom we all know and love from the comics to translate to the big-screen in a believable way will be a helluva job.

There’s also the hurdle of trying to make a successful movie franchise out of a less-than-heroic character. Examples like Mickey Rourke as Marv in Sin City suggest that it is possible for psychotic comic book anti-heroes to resonate with audiences. However, The Punisher hasn’t done too well at the box office in the last few years, and the success of Watchmen, a film that was all about comic book anti-heroes, is certainly debatable. This could be a steep uphill battle for old Venom (his co-creator Todd McFarlane certainly thinks it will be).

What do you think, does a Venom movie have potential to be a box office hit? Do you think that Resse and Wernick are the type of guys who can come up with the kind of proper script that Venom deserves?

As part of the Spider-Man 4/5 story that just broke, Deadline Hollywood also reported that Sony is moving forward with a movie about Venom, one of the villains in Spider-Man 3. Without giving specifics, the word is that a pair of screenwriters have been hired to start work on the script.

The interesting thing is that Todd MacFarlane, one of the creators of the character, doesn’t think Venom can work very well as the “hero” of a movie.

In early August Todd MacFarlane spoke to Newsarama.com about the possibility of a Venom spin-off movie. He realizes that the character can’t be too scary due to the PG/PG-13 target for superhero movies, but that even within those parameters he should be made creepier than he was in Spider-Man 3:

“I think you could add a little bit of a creep factor. I mean, it never bugged me to watch Frankenstein as a kid, so you could have a little bit of it, as long as you have a good story backing it up.”

One interesting item that surfaced was the fact that he didn’t design the character to be human in any way. He designed Venom to be a monster/creature, not a suit worn by a person.

MacFarlane said that the reason some villains are so cool is because they’re so “bad” and trying to make them an “anti-hero” ruins the essence of the character:

“The reason they’re so cool as a bad guy is because they’re bad. And as soon as you try to give too much humanity to them, then you go, no! Now they’re not as good as a bad guy because you’re trying to redeem them.”

I’ve questioned in the past how the heck you take a character like Venom and make him the star of his own movie. As MacFarlane says, to work in a movie setting, by the end of the film there has to be some level of goodness in Venom, and that detracts from who he is.

How do you think Venom could work as the star of his own film?

The Hollywood Reporter has floated news that there is finally some movement on the long awaited (by fanboys) Venom movie.

The last time there was any news of note was back in February of this year that Sony had met with some “A-list writers” to pen a Venom screenplay. It seems that the main guy on that list was Jacob Estes, who has wrtten Nearing Grace and Mean Creek.

Yeah, I haven’t heard of either of those either, but that’s ok, because he’s out and someone else will be coming in to write the script.

Apparently Topher Grace (who portrayed Venom in Spider-Man 3) does NOT have a “lock” on the role, as the studio doesn’t necessarily think he can carry a picture as the star.

I know the character has a cadre of hard-core fans, but I don’t see how you build a movie (or franchise) around this character. On the other hand, I suppose it’s been done before with the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies, so I suppose a villain can be the star of his own film.

Spider-Man 4 is tentatively set for a 2011release, but that’s pretty far off, and I guess Sony is looking for something to cash in on something sooner with the currently super-hot superhero movie trend that was ignited by Iron Man and went critical with The Dark Knight.

According to the article neither Marvel nor Sony would comment on this, so I find it interesting that it was published in one of the mainstream Hollywood publications without a source. Usually that sort of story turns up that way in one of the “new media” sites (like this one) and then shows up on the old school sites only when it’s been verified by a studio.

There’s no target release date set but I imagine it would be well before 2011.

So are you looking forward to a Venom movie? Me, not so much.

We haven’t mentioned the Venom movie since last August here at Screen Rant because frankly, there’s been nothing to say about it.

Back then we reported that Avi Arad said that things are coming along “awesome” regarding the Venom movie, but was tight-lipped regarding casting or any other details. I guess that with the writers’ strike things have been dead in the water, but with Marvel recently cutting a side deal with the WGA it seems that things may be moving forward with this film.

There hasn’t been an official announcement yet, so I’m going to take this with a grain of salt.

Getting back to the Venom character – I know that he (it?) is wildly popular with many comic book fans but frankly, I just don’t see the appeal. I mean, he’s the bad guy. And not just your run of the mill bad guy, but a really twisted, vile bad guy.

Oh… ok, sorry… so THAT’s the appeal.

I don’t follow the character in the comics, so I’ll admit I’m not terribly familiar with him, but as far as I know he has no redeeming qualities whether he’s in full-on Venom mode or when he’s hiding in his host Eddie Brock.

I suppose you can create a movie around a villain – They did it quite successfully with Silence of the Lambs, but it doesn’t appeal to me much at this point.

Or am I missing something?

[UPDATE: Is the Venom Movie Moving Finally Moving Forward?]

Avi Arad recently sat down with Garth of DarkHorizons.com to discuss his involvement in the upcoming movie Bratz (which no, I will NOT be covering here on Screen Rant!) and some Marvel projects came up in the discussion.

In particular it seems that things are moving forward, albeit at an early stage, for Spider-Man 4. At this point it’s just at the discussion level with Sony Pictures. What was a surprise for me was the fact that there is a Venom movie in development! I had not heard this previously.

Avi said that things are coming along “awesome” regarding the Venom movie, but was tight-lipped regarding casting or any other details.

I’m not a big fan of the character and I wonder how the heck you can have a bad guy as the title character for a movie? It’ll be interesting to see how this one develops and I’m sure that lovers of the character who were so angry at what little screen time he had in Spider-Man 3 will be ecstatic to hear this news.

So you’ve probably already heard that the new (and final) Spider-Man 3 trailer is online. Of course if you were one of the folks who’ve seen 300 then you’ve already seen this trailer on a big, giant screen.

This trailer concentrates a lot more on Venom than previous footage has and seems to show that Venom is indeed the main antagonist in the film. It seems like Harry and Sandman are more like the triggers for Venom gaining power than anything else.

I had trouble accessing the trailer over at the site Comcast created for the film because I use Firefox instead of IE as my browser. So until someone asks me to take it down or it brings my server to it’s knees I’m making it available here. I figure that with them charging me over $60 a month for just cable modem access I’m entitled to host the trailer here.

Click on the image below to watch the trailer.

So Venom has black webbing? Here’s a new pic showing Spiderman snagged by the long-tongued, big-fanged dude. Sadly I must admit that I have never read an issue of Spiderman that had Venom in it as a villain (I know! Can you believe it?). So can anyone tell me, does the uber-evil villain in black have black webbing in the comic book?

You can find the original image at the link below. I tweaked it for a clearer look at Venom.

For the next 24 hours only you can go to NBC.com and catch a seven minute preview of Spiderman 3. Personally I fast forwarded through the first half because what I wanted to see was some ACTION.

I hate to admit it, but although I found James Franco’s portrayal of Harry Osborne kind of weepy in the first couple of films, his scenes in the preview as (correct me if I’m wrong) Hobgoblin are really excellent. He seems absolutely ferocious and it works great. And gone is that silly Power Rangers version of the costume, replaced with a more Ninja-like outfit.

Here are a few more images from the preview:

A while back I had a screen cap of what venom looked like from the Spiderman 3 trailer and I did my best to clean it up to make it clear. Well Sideshow Collectibles, which sells really quality movie-related toys and collectibles has for an articulated Venom figure from Spiderman 3.

If you don’t mind seeing what Venom is going to look like in clear detail (consider yourself warned!), go ahead and click on the thumbnails below for a much larger view.

Ifilm is hosting a hot off the press, brand new Spiderman 3 trailer. It’s over 2 minutes long and is a genuine trailer (as opposed to a teaser).

Looks freakin’ excellent to me and right up there with the first two Spiderman movies. We get plenty of looks at Sandman (who was cast PERFECTLY) as well as more Venom background. I’m still concerned that they may be trying to squeeze in too much with three bad guys… well, actually it looks like the way they’re portraying Venom he’s not an actual character, but we’ll have to see.

On the flip side what I did like was seeing the Peter is finally going to tell Harry that he didn’t kill his father. Of course that doesn’t mean that Harry will believe it.

It’s out and it’s very cool and if there was any doubt Venom is in it, doubt no more.

Pretty sweet if you ask me, with the same level of integrity as the previous two films.

Based on recent news it's looking like besides Spiderman we have:

- Mary Jane Watson
- The Sandman
- Venom
- Gwen Stacy
- Harry Osborne (Hobgoblin?)

Venom was confirmed a couple of days ago as was the addition of Gwen Stacy (to be played by Bryce Dallas Howard). I think it's pretty cool that they're finally putting the Gwen character in a Spidey movie but I'm wondering how they'll be working her in?

For those of you unfamiliar, back in the day she was Peter Parker’s “great love”, who was killed when the Green Goblin tossed her off a bridge and Spiderman tried to save her by catching her with his web. Technically it was Spidey who killed her as her neck snapped when he stopped her fall.

I wonder if they’ll kill off Mary Jane in the movie instead of Gwen Stacy?

One thing that I find funny is how they got a redhead to play a blonde and vice versa. Anyway, it just seems like an awful lot of characters to cram into one storyline. I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

Call it wishful thinking about the whole “Venom is the villain in Spiderman 3” thing, but it looks like it ain’t gonna happen. According to AICN, there is artwork all over the production offices of the upcoming Spidey flick indicating that the villain will be Sandman.

Realistically, this makes more sense than Venom from a marketing and box office standpoint. There are some things that are just creepy in drawn or animated form that would be scary as hell in live action, and Venom is one of them. When I think of that character in a live action film, for some reason Spawn comes to mind.

Sandman, if done right (and I have no doubt he will be), will make for a visually interesting villain and is much less intimidating for the kiddies, upon whom much bank will be made.
