Here's our box office report for the weekend of July 22nd 2011 – as well as various movie news tidbits we may have missed.

This week:

Captain America is The First Avenger at the box office; Harrison Ford stays on the Cowboy trail for Black Hats; Pierce Brosnan picks up Stephen King’s Bag of Bones; Seth Rogen and Zac Efron team for an R-rated comedy and the men behind Horrible Bosses take a Vacation.

Box Office:

Captain America: The First Avenger (read our Captain America review here) topped the box office over the weekend and bested the latest Harry Potter film. The Marvel Comics adaptation banked an estimated $65.8 million – similar to Thor (Warner Bros. must be feeling a little bit peeved considering Green Lantern‘s gross). The WWII-era superhero pic had an impressive debut – but it will be interesting to see how it plays overseas. The film is leaning more on the First Avenger angle in order to maximise its appeal, although it’s action and 3D should help grosses. Plus – ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: July 24, 2011

This week's DVD and Blu-ray releases are not even a handful, but are full of laughs. Find out which of the best comedies of all time is finding its way to Blu-ray.

This week is weak on the home video front, but does sport a few comedies. For anybody in an early-August rough patch, the new releases are a good way to cheer up.

The only new release even worth a second glance is Date Night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey. Compared to Death at a Funeral, Carell may just look like a comedic genius.

Then again, the Blu-ray re-release market brings one of the funniest comedies of all time to the enhanced format. National Lampoon’s Vacation should provide all the laughs necessary to fill a week.

The following movies can now be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

Valentine's Day rules the box office, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has an Unblinking Eye, Nicolas Cage's Season of the Witch drops release date, Vacation gets writers and Soderbergh's Contagion gets a host of stars.

This Week:

It’s Valentine’s Day weekend and love is in the air, so it’s no surprise what’s atop the box office. The other positions are less obvious; writers take a Vacation for New Line; Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Marion Cotillard get contagious for Steven Soderbergh; Jeffrey Dean Morgan might be a Loser but he has an Unblinking Eye and why the switch for Cage’s Witch film?

It was a romantic weekend at the box office as Garry Marshall’s Valentine’s Day claimed the number one position with an estimated $52 million over the weekend (or$60 million over the four day Presidents Day weekend). With a slew of top names like Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba and Anne Hathaway it would appear that this rom-com is going to be pretty profitable (most of the cast took a back end deal).

This week:

Vince Vaughn Retreats to the top of the box office; another comic book adaptation makes it way up the Gravel road to the big screen; Michael Bay kills The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; Ryan Reynolds hitches a ride with Motorcade and New Line needs a Vacation – but will Chevy Chase be invited?

Box Office

Swingers duo Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau landed in the top spot with Couples Retreat. The comedy snatched an impressive $35 million from movie-goers despite bad reviews.

Woody Harrelson had to settle for second place with Zombieland. The horror-comedy took $15 million from Friday to Monday, dropping a decent 39% – it looks like the film has a chance of hitting $100 million.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs banked another $12 million for third place. With $96 million in the bank it looks like Meatballs are going to be the order of the day.
