The nominations are out for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards and predictably movies like Avatar, Inglourious Basterds and The Hurt Locker lead the way. Read on to find out the full list

Today marks the day when the nominations for the 36th Annual Saturn Awards are given out. In case you’re not familiar with them, they are given out by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (they also include TV shows and stage productions) so as a reader of Screen Rant I believe they’re right up your alley .

The awards will be given out on June 24th, so we have over four months to speculate and choose the nominees we’d give the award to. The categories range from the usual Best Film (separated into Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction etc) to Best DVD release and Best DVD Special Edition.

Keeping in line with all of the rest of the major awards, films like Avatar, The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds have snagged a high amount of noms, with a couple of fan-favorites like District 9 and Star Trek also being included.

Similar to the Scream Awards, I really dig the Saturn Awards because of the types of films they celebrate. Often with awards like the Oscars and the Golden Globes, purely fun films that have every bit of merit as the serious ones get left out.

Here’s just some of my quick thoughts on who and what’s been nominated: I’m glad to see so many nominations for my favorite show Lost, racking up nine in total (nice to see Josh Holloway finally get recognition for his acting). I’m delighted to see Sam Rockwell get recognition for his fantastic performance in Moon (I was really annoyed that he didn’t get nominated for an Oscar).

I’m a little (no, A LOT) suspect of The Book of Eli, Transformers 2 and Wolverine getting nominated for Best Fantasy Film (and District 9 didn’t?!) and New Moon and The Box getting nominated in the Horror category (were either of those even horror movies?).

Which Saturn nominations do you agree and disagree with? Which nominees are you hoping snag wins come this June?

The Saturn Awards will be presented on June 24th, 2010.

Heroes, Numb3rs, 24, Smallville, Fringe, Chuck and more... Will your favorite television series be back this fall or should you start saying goodbye?

While we’re nowhere near the new fall season and most pilots have yet to be filmed, the networks are already looking at their current lineup to see where they can trim the fat. While most decisions have to be finalized, people talk, news is announced and assumptions can be made.

Some shows are no-brainers to renew (House), while others have already been canceled… and then there are the shows that sit on the fence; ones that are referred to in the industry as “being on the bubble.” Today we have an update on the status of some of those “bubble” shows.

With such a long list of shows, let’s stop with all the small-talk and get right to it. What’s the fate of your favorite show?

ABC

FlashForward
Chance of returning: 40%

With more than 12 million viewers tuning it for the series premiere, one would have thought that it was a shoe-in for a second season. After a massive ratings loss, an extended hiatus, the loss of numerous showrunners and a convoluted plot I’m sure you can guess what’s going to happen to this series. While there’s a chance that ABC could bring this freshman drama back next season, don’t get your hopes up.

V
Chance of returning: 60%

Even though there was a huge ratings drop after the first episode, V still remains a viable option for the network and one that they are interested in pursuing. Unless they receive a slew of amazing pilots this summer, expect The Visitors to return for at least one more season.

___________________

CBS

Numb3rs
Chance of returning: 20%

Oh, my favorite mathematical crime drama. Even though CBS triumphs on Friday nights viewership is down, which makes it harder to continue footing the bill for long-running series. Calculate in the fact that the episode order for Numb3rs was reduced by six and that star David Krumholtz has signed on for a new pilot and sadly this equation doesn’t look good.

After nine years, The CW tried to dump this superhero show into a Friday timeslot to die. Too bad that nobody told the fans. With this season bringing in the ratings and a two-hour television movie event, not even Kryptonite can bring Smallville down.

Supernatural
Chance of returning: 85%

The only thing that’s going to stop the Winchester brothers from coming back will be creator Eric Kripke. With season 5 marking the end of the planned storyline, the future of the show remains uncertain. Still, I’d be willing to bet that they’ll be back for at least a couple more seasons. Especially if The CW has anything to say about it.

NBC

Chuck
Chance of returning: 75%

C’mon… you knew that Chuck just had to be on this list. Last year seems so long ago. All that subway and “Save Chuck.” Well, fans of the show can rest easy as your favorite spy series has recently become one of NBC’s highest-rated shows on Monday nights. See you next fall, Mr. Bartowski.

Community
Chance of returning: 90%

Hot in the ratings this show is not. Still, NBC loves their Thursday night comedy block and has already picked up Parks & Recreation for another season and that show gets lower ratings than Community.

Friday Night Lights
Chance of returning: 5%

The producers have already announced the end. Luckily, the show has been renewed for one final season.

Heroes
Chance of returning: 60%

Even though the superhero drama performs well overseas, on DVD and on the web, NBC can’t have such an expensive primetime series pulling in 4.4 million viewers for its season finale, as first-run broadcasts are where they make most of their money. With ratings declining rapidly and fans becoming fed up, one could understand if the show didn’t come back next year. Still, don’t be surprised if NBC picks up the series for a final 12 episodes. Enough time to wrap everything up nicely – hopefully.

Mercy
Chance of returning: 25%

Do I really need to write something? The only reason why this show continues to be on the air is because NBC canceled so many of their series that there wasn’t anything to replace it with. Oh, and then there was that whole Jay/Conan mess to deal with.

Trauma
Chance of returning: 15%

This show has had almost as many chances as Heroes to perform, but has yet to prove itself. It’ll get another chance next month when it returns with Chuck as its lead-in, but unless everyone in the world tunes in to watch it, this show is a goner.

___________________

FOX

24
Chance of returning: 40%

Even in its eighth season 24 continues to bring in an audience. Still, the production budget for this show is too high and with few networks looking to pick it up in syndication, Fox is trying to find another option — hence the news of a 24 movie. There’s also the option of moving the series to another network, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Fringe
Chance of returning: 90%

Even though this series has had a rough second season, the combination of Fringe and Bones have made Fox a contender in one of the most competitive nights of television. Expect to see more of Peter, Olivia and Walter this fall.

Human Target
Chance of returning: 55%

Even though this comic book-based drama had trouble finding an audience, things picked up this past week. While it’s nothing groundbreaking, it’s enough to give the series a second chance (a la Dollhouse). Things look even better if 24 doesn’t return.

If you’re still wondering what’s going to happen to your favorite show because it wasn’t on the list, chances are its fate has been decided and it’s not “on the bubble” like the shows listed here. Although, if you want a hint, The Deep End will not be sticking around ABC that much longer.

So, does it look like your favorite show is going to make it? Did I miss any show that you’re curious about?

Talk, debate, fight… that’s what the comments are for.

With FlashForward and V not doing as well in the ratings as ABC had hyped / hoped for, some were worried about their futures.

Rest assured that ABC is committed to the new shows… just not fully committed.

As the shows line up to return from their breaks, each show is now less one episode than the original tally of episodes slated to be filmed. This means that when they return from their mid-season breaks, V will only have 8 new episodes and FlashForward will have 14 episodes.

It’s nice to see that for the moment, ABC is backing their shows. I can only hope they stick to this plan as March approaches.

What Is Up With Mid-Season Breaks?

It seems to be the in-fashion thing these days to yank shows and install mid-season breaks. What’s up with that? Are we going to start getting hit with DVD sales for 2 parts of a season now (a la Battlestar Galactica)? I’m not sure what I’d do if that were the case.

I feel like I’m getting jerked around by a network that has jumped on this “mid-season finale” bandwagon.

If anything, they’re just annoying me and there’s a great possibility I just might find another show to watch in the meantime. Or catch repeats of other shows I didn’t have time to watch. All of this can be done before the shows on hiatus come back.

But that’s just me. How do you folks feel about the episode cuts and the mid-season breaks? Are they just as annoying to you as myself?

Return Dates for FlashForward and V

FlashForward, March 4th. V will be returning to ABC on March 30th.

Citizens of Earth, as the resistance against the Visitors grows, mankind just may have a fighting chance against the alien beings. Unfortunately, I don’t believe our favorite alphabet network (ABC) is so gung-ho about this particular extraterrestrial opposition, as resistance means that ratings for their new science-fiction series V have dropped significantly from last week’s debut.

The premiere episode of ABC’s re-imagining of the 1983 sci-fi mini-series raked in 14.30 million viewers, while this week’s episode saw its audience drop 27% to 10.7 million viewers. While all new shows expect to see a slight drop in ratings after their premiere episode, the drop that V saw was the largest since this season started in September.

Still, 10.7 million viewers is nothing to complain about. If V continues to received ratings in that range, fans of the series need not worry about its fate (sorry Dollhouse). Also, looking at Tuesday’s ratings shows you just much of a powerhouse CBS’s NCIS is, as this week’s episode brought in an astonishing 21 million viewers. (Now we all know how NCIS continues to be the number one rated show: it’s awesome!)

The question remains; why so much of the drop off? Have viewers become numb with revisiting past memories with a new paint job? Is the new V just not holding up to what everyone had hoped it would be?

I, myself, never saw the original mini-series, but have become quite interested in this new version. While I’ve fallen back around four episodes in FlashForward, I continue to look forward to the next episode of V. Although, I do have a problem that they’ve turned a mini-series into a regular episodic television series as this means they’re going to have to artificially lengthen a story that has been previously told. I continue to fight the urge to return to the original just so that I know the entire story.

…I can’t be the only one.

Catch V Tuesday nights at 8PM on ABC

The original V series that aired back in the 80s was basically about the threat of Communism and Soviet Russia, so I anticipated that ABC’s remake would have some sort of political undertone as well. What suprised me in the pilot was the apparent target of the show’s political undertone: President Barack Obama.

The episode opens with the standard TV pilot mechanism of briefly showing us a a minute or so of each of the characters we’ll come to know over the course of the series. We have the handsome newscaster who is not taken seriously and wants to get ahead, the single mom FBI agent, a priest and a man with an obviously shadowy background trying to make a fresh start in life.

Soon enough huge spaceships appear over major cities in a scene reminiscent of Independence Day (the writers are quite aware of this, actually pointing it out on the show itself). The ships turn into mega big screen TVs in order to deliver a soothing message by series star Morena Baccarin, who plays alien visitor Anna. She says they are overjoyed to find life on another world – and that they never expected they would find any (then why build a massive video/PA system in to the exterior of your starship?).

They come promoting goodness, peace and light – they’re here to help us with their technology, including setting up healing centers where they can easily cure over 60 incurable diseases. The world is “hurting” according to one of the characters, so it seems the vast majority of the population accepts them on their word without much questioning at all. There are small protests breaking out everywhere, but those folks are looked at as rabble rousers who need to get with the program.

The aliens are all good looking and about hope and change (their words, not mine) and interestingly when reporters begin to ask hard questions upon Anna’s arrival, the newscaster mentioned above accuses them of being rude(!). Later Anna decides that she wants him to be their PR conduit and he is taken aback when prior to their first interview (which could skyrocket his career and fame) she instructs him that he is not to ask any questions that could show the Visitors in a bad light. He balks, but acquieses – and she rubs his nose in it by saying (when the cameras are rolling) that he should feel free to ask anything he likes, they are an open book.

During the interview the phrase “universal health care” is actually used in describing what they are offering and why they should be accepted.

There’s an underground group that knows what the Visitors are up to, but they are looked upon as nutjobs and terrorists even though they are in the right and know what the Visitors are really up to.

Interestingly there is a priest on the show who is skeptical of the Vistors’ intentions despite the Vatican quickly coming to the assessment that the Visitors are good – and he worries about happiness about the Visitors’ arrival turning into devotion and worship.

I’m sure that those who don’t like what the current administration is doing will see a clear connection and those who agree with what Obama is trying to accomplish will either laugh off any such connection as ridiculous or will read more nuanced meaning into the show to demonstrate it actually supports this administration.

What do YOU think?

Um, remember when ABC announced an ambitious plan for airplanes to be decorating the skies above major landmarks with giant red “V”s to market the upcoming mini-series V?

In case you haven’t figured it out, and way after the fact, it’s being reported that it just isn’t happening.

“Why not?”, I hear you asking.

It seems this promotional effort would pollute the air and since Disney, who owns ABC, declared that they would cut fuel emissions by 2012, this marketing plan didn’t gel with that environmental ideology.

This clever idea was dissed publicly by Lisa de Moraes of the Washington Post, who estimated that the campaign to scribble red letters in the air with airplanes would use 400 gallons of fuel that contains 800 grams of lead and produce approximately 3 tons of CO2 and other pollutants.

All in all, this campaign was found to be hypocritical of Disney’s carbon neutral stance.

So if you’re wondering why you aren’t seeing big red “V“s in the sky, that’s why.

Sorry gang.

ABC has made available the first 9 1/2 minutes of V and we have it for you here at Screen Rant.

In the video they try to tie into the emotions one might have felt when JFK was shot or on September 11th. They ask you where were you when these events happened – and where were you this morning. Meaning, the morning that the visitors arrive.

If you live in California, you might have an issue or two as the ground shakes with the arrival of the ship. The first of 29 ships that arrive on Earth.

Check it out after the break and let us know what you think!

In a couple of weeks ABC Television will air its remake of the 80s sci-fi hit V. Audiences are all crossing their fingers and hoping that this remake is much better than the past couple of attempts by television studios (Knight Rider, Bionic Woman). Right now, all hopes of success are resting on the shoulders of one vaguely known actress: Morena Baccarin. If you look at all of the marketing leading up to the November 3rd premiere one face sticks out looking down on the city on the bottom of a huge inter-galactic spaceship and it’s Anna (Baccarin).

For an actress that only has a handful of TV shows under her belt (Firefly, Stargate:SG-1) and two movies (Serenity, Stolen Lives), she sure does have a lot to live up to. She seems to be up to the challenge though and is handling all the press in stride. Recently, Christopher John Farley at Speakeasy, a new blog extension of the Wall Street Journal, had the opportunity to sit down with Morena Baccarin and talk to her about her upcoming role as Anna in V.

Baccarin was a fan of the original 1983 series when it was first on, even though she was a mere four years old, and Farley asks her about that and why the V story worth re-telling:

“I was in Brazil so we got it a few years after the U.S. got it. I remember being with my brother on the couch and watching it and being petrified. Like when one of the Vs peels off her skin. When I got the part [of Anna] I went back and YouTubed the show and watched some scenes and it was as creepy as I remembered. [Why is the story worth re-telling?] Because we’re all interested in life outside of Earth. We all have a fascination with what’s out there because we don’t really know. The storyline lends itself to explore a lot of things-like fear, and blind devotion and terrorism. ”

OK, so she was at least seven or so when the V first came out in Brazil; that makes more sense. My four year old runs out of the room when Oscar the Grouch comes on the screen; I can’t see him sitting through a woman ripping off her flesh to reveal the leathery green lizard skin beneath. She does bring up an interesting point about “blind devotion and terrorism.”

Watch this new clip from the show below and see if you recognize the blind devotion she refers to:

Right now, terrorism is a hot topic and relevant to current world political trends but how does V incorporate that into the show?

“In the pilot, there’s a sleeper cell of aliens. There’s this idea that friends and neighbors may not be who they say they are – that there are evil people living in the community.”

Sounds a lot like what is actually happening in America now; so at least the writers are trying to remain relevant. Time will tell if that is a plot device that actually works or if audiences are wanting to tune out from the world around them, not be reminded of it in a sci-fi show.

Farley continues on and asks the question most people are curious about: “Which animal are you going to eat?” He is of course referencing the scene where Diana (Jane Balder) swallows a whole live guinea pig.

“I haven’t had to eat anything like that in any episode we’ve shot so far. But I’ve been told to brace myself. I was asked by the producer if I have any issues with rodents.”

A rodent is a very vague reference; for all she knows the producers are planning to have her chow down on a capybara (the world’s largest rodent). I for one would tune in to watch that. Morena sort of suffers from the same curse fellow Firefly star Nathan Fillion does – all her shows end after a handful of episodes. We all know what happened to Firefly and she managed to get onto Stargate:SG-1 during its final season.

Morena Baccarin may have to wait for another chance for a long running show if ABC doesn’t get its act together with V. Back in August production shut down on the sci-fi show and last month the studio announced it would be splitting the show into two mini-seasons – four episodes now and the rest after the holiday break. Oh well, it’s a shame really, because she is a talented and beautiful actress and deserves to have a show run for a couple of seasons or longer.

Do you plan on watching the V remake next month? And what rodent do you think Morena Baccarin should eat?

V debuts on ABC November 3rd, 2009 at 8pm EST/7pm CST.

[Update: View a list of where and when you can catch the V skywriting campaign]

ABC is headed for the skies to market their newest sci-fi offering, V, a remake of the popular 80s television series.

Starting this Friday, ABC will be having skywriters create the letter V over 26 undisclosed landmarks.

This will happen a few times a day over the landmarks until the series premiere on November 3rd. I am presuming it won’t happen over each one a few times a day, but heck, I’ve been surprised before.

It seems like a lot of work going into this alien-based science fiction show. Considering the conjecture of whether V, is in trouble or not ever since it was announced they were taking breaks from production and then seemingly testing the waters by breaking it down into a 4-episode mini-series premiere, I’m a bit confused.

Here’s a listing of where and when you can spot the V skywriting:

ABC’s ‘V‘ is slated for a November 3rd premiere and for curious fans of the original series, it can’t be soon enough to see what ABC has done to it in this latest incarnation.

Yet you may wish to temper your complete enthusiasm for the first season of ‘V‘ because ABC is (as they put it) splitting up the season.

Yes, you read that right. ABC is splitting up the season. They’re going to run the first 4 episodes in November, leaving the 4th episode as a sort of cliffhanger. This will then set the stage for a mid-season return.

Maybe.

It’s all rather confounding. Apparently there’s been a flurry of speculation that the series is having problems of one fashion or another.

The production shut down of ‘V’ that took place in late August is helping fuel lots of rumors. The rumors are ranging from the series is dead to what has been filmed will be aired as a mini-series.

Yet ABC and Warner Bros. TV says episode 4 is getting ready to be filmed (mid-October) and then they will go on a holiday hiatus.

Huh? Did they just say, “No, it’s not in trouble, but we’re going to take a holiday break months ahead of schedule.”?

Any good corporate entity has to put on the smiley face. And I find it odd that this comes on the tail end of a WGA mediation that ruled that ‘V‘ is a remake, and as such, has to credit the original series creator, Kenneth Johnson.

If I were a conspiracy fan, I’d think someone high up in the production of this new series has issues with Johnson getting any credit, judging from the timing. But there is absolutely nothing indicating that. I’m just saying. It’s like earthquakes and super early morning quakes. It’s all just coincidental.

So hang tight gang and be patient. That’s all we can do until they resolve their issues with ‘V‘.

Your thoughts?

Not sure if you’ve been following or heard the news, but there were some legal rumblings in regards to what ABC’s new take on their remake of V was going to be.

The issue was that the Writers Guild (WGA) couldn’t decide of V was a remake or not.

Warner Bros. had recently taken the stance that V wasn’t a remake. If it were deemed to not be a remake, Ken Johnson, the original creator wouldn’t see his name in the credits of this new version or get any royalty payments based on the new series.

This stance forced the WGA to go into “Remake Arbitration” (eh?). As it stands, the WGA ruled that the new pilot is indeed a remake. Now they need to determine the specific credits that the original creator, Ken Johnson, would get.

Um, of course it’s a remake. How could it not be a remake when it uses the same premise, story and whatnot.

I’m a bit confused as to why Warner Bros was trying to say it wasn’t a remake.

Filming Held Up?

Yes, Warner Bros TV has put the filming of V on hold.

The specific reasons behind the filming pause has not been divulged by the studio, but insiders have been saying that the quality of the season episodes were not on par with the premiere episode, and the studio wanted to revisit this issue.

Is it just me, or does it sound worrisome that even the studio is worried about the quality of the episodes being filmed?

Just a brief update on this Monday: Plan your prime time with the 2009 TV Fall Schedule; Smallville is getting another new guest star; A certain “Foxy” lady might be kicking off SNL this year; Learn how to catch up on all the NBC shows you missed last year (for free!); and speaking of NBC, how about a first-look photo of Jim and Pam getting married on The Office?

And as a bonus (because I love you) I let you know about the government’s “Cash for TV Clunkers” program.

Let’s get to it!

.

The Office

So we recently let you Office fans know when you can expect Jim and Pam to walk down the aisle – four episodes into the news season. And now we have the first official wedding photo!

The scene was shot at a church in Van Nuys, California on this past weekend and from the photos below you can see that Pam (Jenna Fischer) will be a lovely bride and Jim (John Krasinski) will be every girl’s hometown-sweetheart Prince Charming.

.

Actress Steph Song let it be known on her Twitter account yesterday that she will be playing the role of Roulette on the sixth episode of Smallville’s upcoming 9th season. In the DC Universe Roulette is a kick-ass madame of underground fighting tournaments, often using super heroes and/or villains as combatants.

Not sure how the character will be portrayed on Smallville, but I’ll sure tune in to find out!

The show returns on September 25th (that’s Friday now) @ 8/7c on the CW.

Life & Style is exclusively reporting that “actress” Megan Fox will be the host kicking SNL’s 35th season on September 26th. Fox would naturally do the gig in order to further promote her upcoming high school comedy/horror flick Jennifer’s Body, and has reportedly been prepping to bring the yuck-yuck by doing a digital short with Andy Samberg.

I’m I the only one who thinks SNL could potentially be off to a bad start this decade year?

ABC has announced the premiere date for their re-imagining of the 1980’s sci-fi series called V.

The airdate we can now all start looking forward to is Tuesday, November 3rd at 8:00 p.m., ET/PT.

Below is the press release description of ABC’s outline of the show:

V is a re-imagining of the 1980s miniseries about the world’s first encounter with an alien race. Simultaneously appearing over every major city in the world, the Visitors (or V’s) promote a message of peace. Through their generous offer to share advanced technology, the V’s build a following that may actually hide a more malevolent agenda, one that twists a very deep component of human nature — devotion.

While the world quickly becomes fascinated with the V’s and their link to wonders just beyond the reach of human understanding, FBI Counter Terrorist Agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell) discovers a secret hidden beneath the skin of every V – a secret that may threaten the lives of everyone close to her. Yet for her teenage son, Tyler (Logan Huffman), the V’s are his ticket to something big and hopeful-a new chance for mankind to unite in common goals. To Chad Decker (Scott Wolf), a career-hungry news anchor, his exclusive interview with Anna (Morena Baccarin), the leader of the V’s, is crucial to his dominating the airwaves. Also unsure about the Visitors is Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), a priest questioning his faith in the wake of the Visitors’ arrival. Seeking answers outside the church, Father Jack discovers there are other dissidents who believe the Visitors are not who they say they are, including Ryan Nichols (Morris Chestnut), who is faced with his own life-altering decision when the V’s show up. Never has there been more at stake — it truly is the dawning of a new day.

V also stars Lourdes Benedicto as Ryan’s fiancee, Valerie, and Laura Vandervoort as Lisa, an alluring Visitor who sets her sights on Tyler.

V is produced by The Scott Peters Company and HDFilms in association with Warner Bros. Television. Scott Peters (The 4400, The Outer Limits), Jeffrey Bell (Day Break, Alias), Steve Pearlman (Reunion, Related) and Jace Hall are executive producers. The pilot was directed by Yves Simoneau (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The 4400).

When I first heard about ABC’s new take on the classic Sci-Fi invasion series called V, I thought to myself, “that would be great.” My initial response response was to hope they would at least tread water with this show and give the Sci-Fi genre a decent foot hold in the ratings.

After watching the trailer for ABC’s V, I’m thinking it should do OK. Well, I hope better than OK, but I hold myself in reservation when it comes to how ratings pan out for good sci-fi.

The trailer at first reminded me of Independence Day as the massive alien ships come hovering into view over a multitude of cities. Things shaking, people getting scared. Then we’re shown that the alien visitors are here to help humanity but there are detractors in the human race as some seem to find out some details that most don’t know.

As the trailer progresses, we see glimpses of the dirty secret that is bound to develop.

It’s a very well done trailer and I see interesting parallels with Battlestar Galactica.

There appears to be a strong undertone of faith and devotion, which becomes a key factor as humanity seems to be bestowing devotion upon the hope that the aliens bring. We also see strong family ties demonstrated, and then there’s the initial blanket of hope that slowly recedes as we get a slow, ever creeping sense of impending doom.

Dang, the trailer itself is a great stand-alone mini episode!

I’m particularly looking forward to seeing a few of the cast members as they get a chance to step out of the shadows of their previous roles and add some more shine to their acting resume.

Morena Baccarin (Firefly, Stargate SG-1) will be playing a visitor who is the front face for the aliens, named Anna. It will be very nice to see her – Even if she’s an alien.

ABC is hitting us with a bunch of new shows for their upcoming 2009-10 season.

The new shows include Cougar Town, The Deep End, Eastwick, Flash Forward, The Forgotten, Hank, Happy Town, The Middle, Modern Family, Shark Tank and V.

While shows like Better Off Ted, Castle, Scrubs and True Beauty will be falling in line with other mainstays of the network like The Bachelor, Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Ugly Betty and others.

I know that most of the shows mentioned are not of primary interest to the majority of Screen Rant readers, but we’re tossing them out there for everyone.

ABC of course stuck with their best rated scripted dramas of Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy.

If a show is shown as having been picked up, but does not show in the below list, that means it is debuting later on in the 2009-10 season.

ABC’s fall prime time schedule is as follows (all times listed are Eastern):

Notes: The Bachelor will air Monday nights from 8:00-10:00 p.m. after Dancing with the Stars has its run. Scrubs and Better Off Ted will fill the 9:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. time slots.

The New Fall And Mid-Season Shows

The Deep End is a legal drama starring Matt Long, Ben Lawson, Billy Zane and Clancy Brown to name a few.

Is that a young Cylon Next to that Benton Fraser?

Eastwick is a TV version of The Witches of Eastwick starring Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price and Jamie Ray Newman. Of note, for the serious Due South fan, of which I am, Paul Gross will play Darryl Van Horne in Eastwick. Paul Gross used to play Constable Benton Fraser on Due South and now I may have a reason to watch this show. “Thank you kindly.”

Flash Forward is about a mysterious event that causes the entire world to black out, and during the black out, humanity is given a glimpse of its near future. Executive producers are David S. Goyer (co-writer of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) and Brannon Braga (24, Star Trek: Enterprise) and stars Joseph Fiennes, John Cho & Jack Davenport to name a few.

The Forgotten is a police drama from executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Happy Town looks like a crime drama mystery. After a decade of peace this small town’s first crime since reveals dark truths about some familiar faces. From her short stint on Dollhouse, Amy Acker stars as Rachel Conroy. (Watch out! She’s a doll!)

V is the re-imagining of the 1980s miniseries about the world’s first encounter with an alien race with a seemingly friendly agenda.

The Comedies on the list are:

Cougar Town with Courteney Cox. (Oh hold me back.)

Hank with Kelsey Grammer. (I’ve enjoyed Grammer in the past. Maybe)

The Middle with Patricia Heaton. (Meh.)

Modern Family with Ed O’Neill. (I just don’t have the time folks.)

Dropped and Forgotten

Cupid has been sent back to where he came from, while maybe Dirty Sexy Money was just too blatant for the mouse network.

Eli Stone and In the Motherhood are also gone and there was not enough love left to keep Pushing Daisies around. The other casualties were Samantha Who? and The Unusuals.

So what’s happening this week with some of our favorite television shows? I’ll fill you in on the vaporizing ratings for Dollhouse, The Sarah Connor Chronicles and others. I touch on some Supernatural & NCIS casting news and a season ending story development. I then sprinkle some CSI:NY bits and round it out with some Lily cast updates.

Let’s check it out.

Ratings Notes

A sad ratings note: The completely non-advertising supported set of repeats of Jericho on The CW scored a 0 in ratings. A zero. Of course they are Nielsen families, so that means none of them made any sense of it the first time around and they don’t want to deal with it a 2nd time.

Though it hasn’t been officially announced, inside sources are saying Heroes will be renewed for another 18-20 episodes next season.

Knight Rider, on the other hand, has been parked and done. The season finale had a 21% drop off in ratings from its premiere. Sorry to say for the KR fans out there. I guess it’s time to snatch up the DVD when or if that ever comes out.

Dollhouse fell below 4 million viewers last week, snagging only 3.5 million viewers during the airtime. This is Echo, looking for viewers in the audience!

The Sarah Connor Chronicles viewers dwindled to below 3 million viewers. Friday may be bad, but this is really bad. Maybe as they quit focusing on Sarah’s “3 dot pursuit” and more on Cameron, we might wake up on Fridays once again.

V Snags A Firefly Alum

ABC’s reboot of V has landed Morena Baccarin (aka Firefly’s Inara and Stargate SG-1’s Adria) has been cast as Anna, whose referred to as the “frontwoman” for the alien visitors who come to Earth.

Source: TV Guide

Supernatural

Now that Supernatural has found itself renewed for a 5th season, we will be seeing more of Misha Collins, who plays the angel Castiel. Collins will become a series regular next season. Misha says that with his extended stay, he’ll be doing some butt whooping.

Source: SciFi Wire

NCIS

The news on the street is that NCIS is going to focus heavily on Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) in the last 4 episodes of the season. But with their complicated love triangle involving Michael Rifkin (Merik Tadros), they have planned a pretty explosive ending lined up for the viewers.

Source: Entertainment Weekly

CSI: NY

Winding up to the season finale of CSI: NY, big things are going to happen. The team loses one of their own, Ed Asner will be making an appearance and Craig T. Nelson winds up his story arc. I dare not say anymore!

Source: Entertainment Weekly

Lily

The Gossip Girl spin off tentatively titled Lily is starting to line up some cast.

The CW is in advanced talks with Cynthia Watros (Lost) and Andrew McCarthy (Lipstick Jungle) to come onboard. Watros and McCarthy would play play CeCe and Rick Rhodes, Lily’s parents and Serena’s grandparents. (Caroline Lagerfelt plays CeCe on the current series.)

The “backdoor pilot” episode is slated to air May 11.

A Quick Rant

As anyone seen the latest COMCAST commercial where they have this sing-song monotone chant / rap throughout the ad while real people exist in some cartoonish world? Is it just me, or do you want to throw your TV out the window when that ad comes on? Ack!

A Question To Our Readers:

Do we have any Gossip Girl fans hanging out around here? Let me know.

Additionally, if there’s anything you have a hankering for, ask away in the comments section and I’ll scour the news for these requests. All you have to do is ask. I’ll be watching for your comments.

NBC’s Day One

NBC is pulling together a post-apocalyptic drama called Day One. It’s about a group of neighbors from an apartment complex after a catastrophic event. The cast includes David Lyons, Carly Pope, Adam Campbell and Thekla Reuten.

So will NBC give this a chance? They’ve nabbed Heroes ex-writer Jesse Alexander for the task of creating this little mini Jericho. Why do I call it that? It’s about a small band of survivors who strive to rebuild society and unravel the mysteries of the disaster than took place to force them into this situation.

The Bachelor Turns Fans Off

Jason Mesnick outdid anything any other bachelor may have, or will ever do. At the end of the season, he picked his girl and asked her to marry him. Melissa was a happy ex-cheerleader from the Dallas Cowboys. He later dumped Melissa and went for plan B, Molly. Molly is the girl he dumped in favor of Melissa on the last day of the season of The Bachelor.

According to various polls, this move didn’t go over so well and people think he’s a stinker. (Different words used to protect the eyes of any youngsters reading!) But don’t worry, Melissa has already hooked up with a guy she’s been seeing on and off for the last two years.

Fringe

FOX is not committing to anything yet as people are starting to wonder if FOX will renew Fringe for another season. They say they want to wait and see how it does after its April 7th return to the air. Come on people. Do it. You know you’re going to.

Prison Break

FOX is putting together those extra two hours of Prison Break in the form a two-hour movie. It’s a self contained adventure and it takes place a few days after the events of the season (and series) finale.

Why? I have no clue. But that woman we all love to hate, Gretchen, is in it. Grr. I hope it finally happens to her!

Knight Rider

In case you’re wondering, Knight Rider’s last episode aired last night. The organized fan clubs are trying to rally to let NBC know that they want to see it return. They even admit that the show is completely different than it was when the season began and they say that it’s finally getting its legs under it. The cast has been trimmed and they stopped figting the terrorist of the week. Just like it used to be in the original series. No news is good news, but in this case, no good news is probably just that, no good news. We’ll see what they have in store.

Life On Mars

I hope you weren’t a Life On Mars fan. If you are, you’re in for some real disappointment as your reality crashes back to Earth. ABC canceled Life On Mars. They are going to let it run its course of 17 episodes and they’re done with it.

At least the fans of this show can get themselves some closure as the exec producers have been told with enough time to put together a decent series finale. Unlike the way ABC unceremoniously dumped Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone.

At least you’ll get an answer to the obvious question everyone has: Is Sam Tyler in a coma or been smacked back in time by the car accident!

Survivor

Knowing how all of our readers are such big reality TV fans… crickets… I just had to warn you that CBS has ordered two more editions of the Gilligans Island mockumentary of sorts. At least that’s what I like to call it.

These two new “editions” will air in the 2009-2010 season. This will put the show into it’s 20th season, edition or whatever the h**l you want to call it and will officially make it the longest running reality TV show ever. Oh goody. I get quality time with my wife who happens to like this show.

Jerry Seinfeld Returns!

Jerry Seinfeld is joining forces with NBC for a new reality series. Yes, another one… but this one sounds like it could get interesting. Bear with me here! The show is tentatively titled The Marriage Ref and will feature celebrities, athletes and comedians, who will judge couples in marital disputes and recommend resolutions to their problems.

LOL… this sounds like a can of worms. Comedians tossing out advice to sparring wedded couples? Heck, cops don’t even like dealing with domestic disputes. This could be funny… and that is exactly how Seinfeld is playing it out… as a comedy.

Six one-hour episodes have been ordered and are expected to premiere in the fall.

Burn Notice

Finally! After two seasons of Burn Notice where we’ve been learning how to be an operative on the lamb and getting the job done taking down bad guys, Michel Westin is going to come face to face with the person who had him burned in the first place. This is going to happen in tonights season finale.

Along with that event, Michael and Carla are putting each other in the crosshairs too. It should be an exciting episode.

Season 3 will be about Michael and Fiona still trying to not be together and Michael dealing with things from his past and his career choice.

With the guy who burned him outed, I hope they can continue to make this interesting. It’s been great having this subplot always in the background generating that little extra intensity to each episode.

The Simpsons

FOX has renewed The Simpsons for two additional seasons. That will bring the longest-running series in prime-time television history through its 22nd season. Zoinks!

Another classic television series, V, is set to come to us re-envisioned and hopefully will be another nice dark hit like some other re-imagined series we all know and that I’m trying to resist mentioning.

Another Remake On The Horizon:
Do you remember V? No, not V for Vendetta. V the television series.

Well, in case you thought your fuzzy distant memories were nothing but that, think again gang. Back in October of ‘08 ABC gave the green light to a remake (yes, yet one more remake) of the old show. What? You don’t remember V? That’s fine. Nothing to be ashamed of.

V was about rodent-eating lizard aliens that showed up on Earth and though they said one thing, they had their eyes set on our planet’s water. It starred Marc Singer, Faye Grant, Jane Balder, Michael Ironside, Robert Englund & Lane Smith, to name a few.

It’s been said that the original series was an allegory for the Holocaust.

Who’s Tapped To Head The Project?:
Scott Peters, the co-creator of The 4400 has been tapped to write the pilot for V and will executive produce alongside Jason Hall.

The new remake will be about Homeland Security agent Erica Evans, whose son comes in contact with the aliens. Of course, the aliens say they come in peace. WHEN WILL WE LEARN? Well, as you are probably guessing, we’ll find out that they don’t come in peace. Has anyone not seen Mars Attacks? Blast them before they run around going nyah nyah nyah from inside their fish bowls!

What Can We Expect From This Remake?:
I think we can expect something out of the norm for a remake. Remakes are all about re-imagining the original series. If Peters applies his experience from being behind the camera of The 4400, Jericho, Burn Notice and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. we just might get another butt kicker of a “remake.”

If he can take the best of these other shows and mix and match it just right, this could actually be quite the gem of a new show. Yes, I said new show. Like another show that has been successfully re-imagined, using dark themes about humanity, it could be a hit. Or, it could be another Knight Rider. (Sorry Knight Rider fans, that wasn’t a jab at KR.).

Are There Any Other Remakes On The Horizon At ABC?:
Knowing how much you get excited about the ideas of old ideas being made into new ideas from someone’s idea that they think is a great idea, guess what? Someone got the idea to do a pilot for Eastwick. Hmm… that will be based on the Jack Nicholson movie, Witches of Eastwick. Well, it’s not exactly a remake but I had to get that in there.

For now, I haven’t seen any news on the cast for V but as soon as we find out, you’ll find out.

If you were alive in the early ’80s and had even the slightest interest in science fiction, chances are you were aware of V, a miniseries televised by NBC in 1983 and followed by V: The Final Battle and V: The Series the following year. The plot centred on an alien invasion, the human resistance movement and a strong Nazi/WWII allegory. It could even be argued that the basic story – minus the intelligent plot points – was directly ripped off in the generally woeful Independence Day.

For those who don’t remember, think reptiles in human disguise, mice and guinea pigs for dinner and/or smart red uniforms and I’ve found people usually recall the show from within the depths of their subconscious.

For those who do remember – and were fans – did you know a sequel miniseries is currently sitting in development hell?

Having heard the first rumblings quite a few years ago, I was surprised how little was made of it on online news sites. Had the phenomenon died off so significantly? Did the abysmal, hour-long television series really kill the franchise so completely?

In 2005, it was reported that NBC passed on the idea of producing original creator Kenneth Johnson’s sequel script. Instead, they began looking into a remake (for which the writer/director submitted a screenplay) only to question – ironically – whether the idea was too close to Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich’s 1996 blockbuster. Later that year, the network – which was partly revived in the early ’80s by V’s success and was famously in another slump around ‘05 – pulled out of the idea, in fear of flooding the market with sci-fi television. ABC then took an interest and even a feature film was considered. However, as of today, the project remains in development hell.

So, you ask, why bring it up? What’s the story? Well… for those interested in seeing Kenneth Johnson’s official sequel to the original V miniseries – that is, it ignores most of The Final Battle and all of The Series, which he did not approve of – a novel titled V: The Second Generation is about to hit shelves this November. Based on the script that was bandied about at NBC and ABC, the synopsis is as follows:

The reptilian Visitors, who cleverly portray themselves as Earth’s protectors, are anything but. Our oceans are being drained in order to fuel the aliens’ motherships, and our scientists are treated like wanted criminals. And they have pods of preserved humans destined for even more sinister purposes.

But hope is not lost. A small, yet resourceful Resistance risks everything to undermine the Visitors’ stranglehold on Earth’s people. Despite their heroic efforts, without more help they will be crushed by the Visitors and their human militia. Just when Earth’s doom seems inevitable, agents of an alien civilization from another planet arrive in answer to humanity’s desperate call for help. But can these other aliens be trusted? Or might we defeat one alien overlord, only to be delivered into the hands of another, equally as oppressive?

Time is running out for the Resistance, for when the Visitors’ Leader arrives, the aliens will complete their mission on Earth, with devastating consequences for all life on the planet.

The most interesting part? It remains listed as “currently being developed for TV” and, after contacting Kenneth Johnson, it appears there’s some truth in this. When asked whether a big-screen production or perhaps a straight-to-DVD release may be on the cards, Johnson confirmed “all options are open and we are pursuing them” but that straight-to-DVD is “unlikely” due to “the high production cost”.

So, that’s that. If any of you have ever had an interest in seeing the V franchise revived, now you know: it’s not out of the question. It sounds to me like the suits just need to know if there’s a demand.
