Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like ...

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: February 15th, 2011

If you thought last week was rough for DVD and Blu-ray fans, this week is more of the same. There is little to be excited about, but some titles present an opportunity to at least please fans of certain genres.

Four classic movies make their way to Blu-ray. The films range from the the dramatic, yet charming Rain Man to one of Robert Downey, Jr.’s best performances as Chaplin.

This week’s two new releases hit both DVD and Blu-ray and offer a variety of genres. Get Low and Unstoppable give this week an interesting range of choices for home entertainment.

Tron: Legacy won the belt of box office champion. The highly promoted and belated sequel to the ‘80s film grossed an estimated $43.6 million over the weekend. Harry Potter waves his magic wand – but he can’t get un-Tangled; Magnolia Films has Good Neighbours; Ben Stiller and James Franco talk about being Young; Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi have Contraband and Michael Douglas returns!

Box Office

Disney’s Tangled duked it out with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 for the top spot over the weekend. The boy wizard lost with Tangled taking $21.5 million to Potter‘s $16.7 million. The Potter film has now banked a mighty $244 million, while the animated fairy tale has scored $96.5 million.

Burlesque danced up another $6.1 million – upping its domestic total to $27 million. The film stars Cher and Christina Aguilera.

The latest Denzel Washington and Tony Scott team-up Unstoppable banked another $6 million for a grand total of $68.9 million.

Harry Potter remained box office champion over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The boy wizard and the Deathly Hallows: Part One should bank in the region of $80 million over the five-day weekend ($50 million for the three days). That gives the film a huge $220 million cumulative gross.

Disney’s Tangled in 3D had to settle for the runner-up position. The mouse house shouldn’t feel too bad, as the film banked an impressive $69 million over the five days.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: November 14, 2010

This week:

Unstoppable is stoppable; Dune‘s future is looking bleak; Paramount readies some high-profile films; Warner Bros. want Tales From The Gangster Squad; Courtney Ford needs True Blood; will Merlin have magic? Women kick butt in The Athena Project; Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank and Ashton Kutcher get ready for New Year’s Eve; and lots more.

Last week’s champion Megamind and the Denzel Washington flick Unstoppable (review here), directed by Tony Scott, fought it out for the top spot over the weekend. It looks like the animated superhero film came out on top, after grossing an estimated $30.1 million, upping its total to $89.8 million.

That doesn’t mean that Washington’s film disappointed – as it grossed $23.5 million, which is business as usual for a Washington action effort.

This is the second “train movie” in a row for director Tony Scott. His previous film was the remake The Taking of Pelham 123, and now we have have Unstoppable, a film “inspired by true events” (aka very loosely based on a real even with many liberties taken). Both films have something in common: A “retro” feel that reminds one of movies made back in the 70s through early 80s.

‘Unstoppable’ Clips Feature Denzel & Runaway Trains

Denzel Washington had to stop a train hijacked by John Travolta and his menacing walrus goatee in the 2009 remake of The Taking of Pelham 123. Jump ahead to the present and Washington is still having transportation issues in this year’s Unstoppable.

Just over four minutes of footage from Unstoppable is now online and it offers us a better look at the runaway train thriller, which also stars Star Trek‘s Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson (Sin City).

Summertime and all that easy living is now done, and unless you’re one of those people who lives where the sun is always shining then the onset of Fall means four things: colder weather, earlier sunsets, heavier clothing and movies galore.

Yes, the summer has all those big blockbusters we’ve been waiting all year to see, but Fall is the time when we actually want to be in the movie theater: when being outdoors is no longer an attractive alternative and the cinema offers many, many, award-worthy films. First Trailer for Tony Scott’s ‘Unstoppable’

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for the upcoming Tony Scott-directed drama/thriller Unstoppable, which stars Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson.

The project hasn’t been without its share of behind-the-scenes drama. Just over a year ago we reported on the news that Washington had left the project over money (he was offered $16 million instead of the usual $20 million he gets per film) but luckily for the film they managed to work out a deal and things moved forward.

Unstoppable is Washington’s fifth collaboration with director Tony Scott, and for some reason it’s another train-related movie, following the duo’s recent collaboration on a remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. However, this time the plot focuses on an actual problem with the train and not a hostage situation:

Quentin Tarantino scored the biggest opening of his career with Inglourious Basterds. The Brad Pitt film shot up an impressive $37 million over the weekend giving The Weinstein Company a much needed financial boost. The R-rated Nazi killing epic will have a chance of cracking $100 million if word of mouth is good.

District 9 dropped less than 50% this weekend after banking an estimated $18.9 million. With $73 million already in the bag it looks like this $30 million film will be very profitable.

Denzel Washington Is ‘Unstoppable’ Again

Last week Screen Rant reported on the news that Denzel Washington had apparently walked away from the upcoming Tony Scott directed runaway train thriller, Unstoppable. The reason for this was over money: the studio wanted to cut down Washington’s usual $20 million salary to $16 million (how ever would he have lived…) and Washington declined, apparently moving on to look for another project.

However, it seems that 20th Century Fox and Washington have come to some sort of deal, putting Unstoppable back on track for this fall, with pre-production officially resumed.

Washington will re-team with Tony Scott for a fifth collaboration, playing a veteran engineer who joins up with a young conductor (Chris “New Captain Kirk” Pine) to stop a runaway train full of toxic chemicals. Scott will be directing a screenplay by Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard), ...

Denzel Washington’s fifth collaboration with director Tony Scott was set to be the runaway train thriller, Unstoppable. Star Trek’s Chris Pine was reportedly in talks to star alongside Washington in the movie, and it looked the project was firmly on its way.

That was until budget concerns arose, particularly after Washington and Scott’s last collaboration, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, recently performed disappointingly at the box office ($100-plus million budget to a $61 million domestic box office performance).

Well, it appears that money has become too much of an issue around the movie – because Denzel Washington has reportedly dropped out of Unstoppable.

Chris Pine In Talks To Be ‘Unstoppable’

It’s been revealed that Chris Pine, who recently starred as the new James T. Kirk in the Star Trek reboot, is currently in negotiations with 20th Century Fox to star alongside Denzel Washington in the Tony Scott-directed thriller, Unstoppable. If Pine gets the gig, it will be his first post-Star Trek role, and the movie will be the fifth pairing of Washington and Scott.

The news that Pine was in talks to star in Unstoppable came from Washington himself backstage at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards (where both Washington and Pine each presented an award). Washington said:

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: April 26, 2009

Beyonce is Obsessed with being number one; Tony Scott and Denzel Washington are Unstoppable; it’s all Greek to Warner Bros. with Odysseus; James Marsden hassles the “Hoff” in Straw Dogs; will DiCaprio Beat the Reaper? Catherine is Keener for Jackson.

Box Office

It looks like all the independent women threw their hands up in the air for Beyonce Knowles starring Obsessed. The female fronted film grossed $28.5 million – which is about $10 million more than the studio predicted.

Zac Efron had to settle for a runner-up spot this week with an $11.5 weekend take for 17 Again. The film has so far banked about $39 million clearly going through the door-marked profit.

Channing Tatum (who’s on the cusp of big things with G.I Joe) and Iron Man’s (but not Iron Man 2) Terrance Howard came a close third this weekend with $11.3 million for Fighting.
