Two comedies, two thrillers, a sword-and-sandals epic and a Michael Bay Blu-ray hit shelves this week. Clearly there is a little for everybody, unless you are a couple looking for a romantic comedy to watch.

A few of the titles this work are definitely worth your money, though there are no movies that will bring fans to stores in droves. Instead, some of the titles may quietly find their audiences, but hopefully they will do more in the week before Lord of the Rings returns to Blu-ray.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: February 27, 2011

This week:

Owen Wilson has the highest new entry at the box office with Hall Pass, while Nic Cage runs out of gas with Drive Angry; Patrick Wilson and James Marsden move into a Loft; Clint Eastwood’s J.Edgar has someone to Root for; Gerard Butler is Playing The Field with Uma Thurman and Jessica Biel and Steve Carell moves out of The Office and onto the stage with Burt Wonderstone.

Box Office

Oscar weekend saw quite a few weak performing films at the box office. The Elton John soundtracked Gnomeo & Juliet was first after singing-up an additional $14.2 million. The Shakespeare themed ‘toon has now grossed over $75 million.

The Farrelly Brothers comedy Hall Pass (read our review) opened at number two with a not very impressive $13.5 million. The comedy which stars Owen Wilson and Jason Sudekis failed to find an audience like other buddy-comedies such as

The Box office is Unknown; Hailee Steinfeld is Forgotten; Sarah Jessica Parker talks Sex and the City 3; Darren Aronofsky floats his boat with Noah; Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy tackle werewolves with Sharp Teeth and Who are The History Keepers?

Box Office

Liam Neeson looks set to top the box office over the weekend with his latest action-thriller. Unknown (read our review) sees the Irish star kicking butt in Europe (not unlike Taken), the Joel Silver produced film will collect around $26 million over the Presidents’ Day long weekend (or $21.8 million for the three days).

Elton John musical Gnomeo and Juliet should see $25 million over the long weekend ($19.4 million for three days), upping its gross to $56 million.

Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s Just Go with It grossed an impressive estimated $21 million for its second weekend (it’ll take about $18 million Friday ...

Warner Bros. has released a preview kit for its slate of movies being released between January 2011 and December 2011. Included are some of the first images for some highly anticipated movies – as well as their synopses to clue you in.

‘Unknown’ Trailer: Liam Neeson Back in Action

Liam Neeson has his action game face on again playing an ordinary man whose identity has been (dare we say it) Taken in the upcoming Noirish flick, Unknown, from director Jaume Collet-Serra.

An official trailer has been released for the paranoia thriller, which was formerly known as Unknown White Male but is now known as, well, the new action pic that stars Neeson, is set in Europe, but isn’t Taken 2.

Neeson stars in Unknown as Dr. Martin Harris, who travels overseas to attend a medical conference in Berlin with his wife Elizabeth (January Jones of Mad Men fame). While in Germany, the couple grabs a cab ride from a woman named Gina (Diane Kruger), which results in a crash that leaves Martin in a coma for four days. When the ...

Upcoming Movie Release Dates Announced

Several studios have announced a number of official release dates for in-development films set to debut over the next couple years. Surprisingly, only four of the 16 are sequels. In a time when it seems every other “new” movie is a sequel or reboot, that number is quite pleasing.

There are a few comedies, a honey-loving bear, a deadly virus, and plenty more hitting theaters between now and 2013. The next three years are full of some epic comic book adaptations and summer blockbusters. But not every film is geared for the geeks and fanboys.

Box Office

Clint Eastwood’s Invictus scored just under $10 million over the weekend from 2,125 locations. Opening much like Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby, the film has had solid reviews from critics. With Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon head-lining, the film might have a chance of hitting the $100 million club if it gets some awards momentum.
