Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: February 5th, 2012

The end of 2011 saw the box office in the doldrums, but things are now looking up, as this week saw both Chronicle and The Woman In Black open to more than $20 million each – much more than analysts predicted.

Science Fiction effort Chronicle was the champion, grossing an estimated $22 million. The low budget superhero film (read our review) has a reported production budget of just $12 million, meaning that it’ll be very profitable for 20th Century Fox.

Daniel Radcliffe’s attempt to have a movie career after the Harry Potter franchise got off to a good start, with The Woman In Black grossing an estimated $21 million. The Hammer Horror (read our review), is set to have the biggest opening ...

Liam Neeson’s The Grey topped the box office over the weekend, scoring an estimated $20 million. The Joe Carnahan man versus nature film has had solid reviews (read ours) and it again shows that Neeson is the go to guy for middle-age action.

The down side is that The Grey’s debut was less than the Irishman’s last action effort Unknown, which opened to $21.8 million, on its way to a final haul of $63 million. It was also less than Neeson and Carnahan’s The A-Team which started with $25 million and closed with $77 million in the summer of 2010. This R-rated flick still has potential and it could outgross the disappointing Unknown – if it holds.

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 22, 2012

The fourth instalment of the Underworld franchise, Underworld Awakening, topped the box office over the weekend after grossing an estimated $25.4 million. The Kate Beckinsale starrer is doing good business considering that the first installment in the series opened in 2003. That film grossed $21 million on its debut, for a $51 million final total.

Underworld: Evolution scored $26 million when it opened in 2006, on its way to a $62 million final tally. The third, a Beckinsale-free entry released in 2009, subtitled Rise of the Lycans, grossed $20 million during its first weekend and topped out at $45 million. True to its title, Underworld Awakening (aka Underworld 4) finds Selene (Kate Beckinsale) waking up 12 years after humanity’s discovery and “purging” of the vampire and Lycan (werewolf) hordes living in their midst. Selene finds herself in a world where vamps and wolves are near extinction, and humans keep tight control of things, methodically searching for and destroying the last of “the infected.”

However, before Selene can even get her bearings she is swept up in a rescue mission involving a young girl named Eve (India Eisley), who is more powerful than anyone imagined. It’s up to Selene to protect Eve from those who would harm her – be they human, Lycan, or the vampire coven itself.

There’s been a flurry of buzz about The Dark Knight Rises recently, thanks to the release of the first official full-length trailer, special IMAX screenings of the film’s prologue, and all the resultant rumor mongering/discussion among fans, based on the preliminary bits of footage unveiled from director Christopher Nolan’s final Batman flick.

Screen Gems is clearly hoping to take advantage of the 2011 winter holiday season to generate more buzz for the fast-approaching release of Underworld Awakening, the fourth installment in the popular action/fantasy/horror saga headlined by Kate Beckinsale as everyone’s favorite catsuit-wearing, guns-blazin’, bone-cracking vampiress (or “death dealer”), Selene.

‘Underworld: Awakening’ TV Spot: Selene Vs. Humans Vs. Super Lycans

Underworld: Awakening is the latest addition to the popular supernatural action franchise – one that retains the series’ staple ingredient (namely, Kate Beckinsale kickin’ butt in a black leather catsuit) but mixes things up by bringing on newbie directing duo Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein to work from a screen story crafted by Underworld staple writer/director Len Wiseman.

The trailers for Awakening have all succinctly outlined the film’s narrative setup and teased its (now, trademark) brand of hyper-stylized action, as is being brought to life in 3D this time around. Today, we have an extended TV spot for the flick that features plenty of fast-paced violence, but also touches on a certain important plot point that’s been somewhat glossed over in previous theatrical promos.

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: December 20, 2011

There are only two weeks worth of new DVD/Blu-ray releases left in 2011, and as the year winds to a close, finding quality movies on the new release shelves is becoming harder to do.

This week offers movie fans just 19 total new releases to choose from, and of those, we could find nine that interested us, such as Warrior and Midnight in Paris, both four-star films. Mixed with them are a handful of mildly entertaining but ultimately forgettable films – Dolphin Tale, A Farewell to Arms and Margin Call – and a couple of films that don’t quite live up to expectations – Colombiana and Straw Dogs.

Today we have several images from two upcoming titles that (in different ways) straddle the often fine line between science fiction and fantasy: the sequel Underworld: Awakening and the literary adaptation, John Carter.

Kate Beckinsale’s icy blue-eyed vampire warrior gal, Selene, looks vivacious as ever while posing in black leather in the latest still frames released from the fourth Underworld flick. By comparison, the John Carter images offer some complimentary eye candy, in the form of the muscular (and often topless) Taylor Kitsch as the eponymous Civil War vet – along with some unusual creatures and alien airships from the film.

Earlier this month we had the chance to briefly chat with Kate Beckinsale about her roles in Underworld: Awakening (which sees the return of her character, vampire “death dealer,” Selene) and the remake of the 1990 Paul Verhoeven fan favorite Total Recall.

The actress, who also plays Lori in Total Recall (the role that Sharon Stone originated), talked a bit about the pleasure she is taking in playing a character who is a full fledged villain in the remake; and the comfort she finds in revisiting a character she knows as well as Selene in Underworld: Awakening.

With the Resident Evil series pushing forward with yet another sequel after the success of their recent 3D outing, and Tomb Raider about to be rebooted, there’s one thing missing from the female-led action genre: Vampires.

While Underworld franchise fan-favorite Kate Beckinsale wasn’t written into the trilogy conclusion/prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, her story is far from over and she’s making a return to her most popular role to date. I know what you’re thinking – there aren’t enough vampire movies being made these days. Truth be told, not only has our culture’s current obsession with undead bloodsuckers led to the development of dozens of new properties (hoping to cash in on the craze) – it’s also reinvigorated established vampire franchises.

Case in point: Underworld 4.

The ending to the second film, Underworld: Evolution, didn’t seem to leave many doors open for subsequent entries and, coupled with Kate Beckinsale’s waning interest in the series, they decided to go the prequel route with 2009′s Rise of the Lycans – a film that focused on a different vampire/lycan romance and detailed the origins of their feud.

With the vampire genre as strong and infused with pop culture as its ever been, it’s no surprise that Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment are working to bring back the Underworld franchise. All three movies to date, including the prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans which didn’t feature Beckinsale, have proven profitable on relatively lower budgets and earned a strong niche for their unique style and perspective on vampire/werewolf lore.

The Underworld franchise hasn’t exactly received the most stellar series of reviews from critics so far (none of the trilogy’s films scores higher than 32% on Rotten Tomatoes). However, the films are undoubtedly popular with movie fans, having made almost $300 million combined on relatively small budgets – so naturally there’s going to be a fourth film.

For some fans, perhaps even more important than the plot, director, writers or any co-stars – is whether or not franchise star Kate Beckinsale will be returning. Underworld 4 is rumored to be effectively kicking off a new trilogy which could lead some to speculate that Beckinsale may not return (a clean slate as they say).

The Expendables edges out five new releases at the weekend box office; Underworld 4 will rise in January of 2012; Mark Strong talks Green Lantern; creepy elevator images from Devil; Ryan Reynolds is one hard-working guy; Google is getting its own movie; the production schedule and shooting location for Super 8 has been revealed; and lots more.

Sly Stallone and his brigade of manly men retained the box office crown for a second weekend as The Expendables was top dog yet again. The ultra-explosive action flick grossed an estimated $16.5 million, raising its 10-day total to just under $65 million in the U.S. Does this mean Expendables 2 will happen after all? If it does, then Chuck Norris had better join the party the next time around.

3D Movies Run Amok: A Fad That Should Stop… But Won’t

When I was a child I got this new toy for Christmas: A fireman’s hat with a rotating red light on top of it that made siren noises. I loved that hat… It was new, shiny, and all sorts of awesome. The problem was that I would wear it everywhere: School, church, friends’ houses, the mall, outside to play, etc. It didn’t take long for it to become old, tired and broken.

I’m starting to feel the same way about Hollywood and its newest toy: 3D technology.

We have no one to blame but ourselves, really. Maybe if audiences hadn’t made Avatar the highest grossing film of all time, then Hollywood studios wouldn’t be mortgaging their mother’s heirloom jewelry to convert their films into 3D.

Last word we heard on the Underworld front, writer John Hlavin had been tapped to pen the script for Underworld 4. The film was confirmed as a sequel to Underworld: Evolution, that would be shot in 3D (naturally) and would likely kick off a new Underworld trilogy.

But there was still one big question facing Underworld fans: would actress Kate Beckinsale be returning to the franchise?

This question is important for two reasons:

Despite what you think of her as an actress, Beckinsale is the star of this franchise.
