Nathan Fillion’s One Condition For Playing Drake in ‘Uncharted’ Movie

Uncharted, one of Sony’s biggest video game-turned potential movie adaptations, has endured a rough year. Back in October, Academy Award-nominated director David O. Russell was signed as the Uncharted helmer. One month later, Russell began talking-up his now controversial “family dynamic” angle and brought-on Mark Wahlberg to star as fan-favorite adventurer, Nathan Drake.

However, through all the ups and downs that led to the eventual exit of the director (and subsequently Wahlberg as well), one thing remained constant – many fans were still holding-out hope that Castle star, Nathan Fillion, would get a crack at playing Drake on the big screen. Unsurprisingly, Fillion is still very interested in the role – but on one very respectable condition.

‘Uncharted’ Movie Has A New Writer & Director

For many fans of the Uncharted video game series from developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony Computer Entertainment, it was a relief to hear in May that directer David O. Russell would no longer be bringing us his strange adaptation of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune to the big screen with Mark Wahlberg starring as franchise protagonist, Nathan Drake.

Their plan for the film had little to do with the game, so why potentially tarnish that brand and use that character name for something unrelated? The fan outcry won in the end and now the Uncharted movie is back to square one. As of today however, the project has a new director and writer in Neil Burger.

Following quickly after the announcement that Academy Award nominated director David O. Russell was leaving the upcoming video game-turned big screen film adaption, Uncharted, undisclosed sources have confirmed a pair of key news items that many fans are no-doubt eager to hear.

Recent reports suggest that Russell’s exit was, in fact, due to creative differences – stemming from a major conflict of opinion regarding how true the film should be to the celebrated Uncharted source material. As a result, it sounds as though Sony isn’t just passing on Russell, they’re also sending his script and would-be star packing as well.

With video game movies having become what’s arguably the most disappointing genre of film, it didn’t help the frustration of video gamers hearing that David O. Russell was developing a film adaptation of Uncharted which seemingly had little to do with the game. Even the potential casting of Mark Wahlberg as the franchise’s protagonist, Nathan Drake, had mixed reaction but that all may be coming to an end, with at least half of the problem already alleviated.

David O. Russell Could Make ‘Cocaine Cowboys’ Before ‘Uncharted’

David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg are seemingly on their way to becoming the next Scorsese/De Niro (or Scorsese/DiCaprio) of director and actor duos. Their most recent collaboration, The Fighter, is gunning to walk away with at least one, possibly two, acting awards at Sunday’s Oscar ceremony, and the pair look set to work together again on the Uncharted movie adaptation.

Now comes word from Russell himself about another project with Wahlberg, titled Cocaine Cowboys – one that may come to fruition before these fellows begin production on their video game flick.

The Uncharted movie adaptation has had its fair share of controversy among gamers. Writer/director David O. Russell seems to be crafting a movie with little to no resemblance to the widely adored videogame series, despite sharing the name, brand, and main protagonist – to be played by Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter).

Earlier this month, there was speculation that eclectic filmmaker David O. Russell might helm a big-screen adaptation of the comic book 2 Guns before tackling the long-gestating Uncharted movie. Despite laying claim to a resume that’s filled with unique and entertaining films (including the Oscar-nominated The Fighter), Russell has always been a controversial choice among fans of the Uncharted video game series.

Though the director’s past work gives little indication that he’s capable of handling a mainstream action epic, his films are so wildly different from one another that there’s nothing to indicate he couldn’t either make a great action film as well. However, Russell got off on the wrong foot with gamers almost immediately by casting Mark Wahlberg as Nathan Drake.

Russell is expanding his repertoire beyond the field of quirky indie fare and action/sports genre pics to include… possibly both quirky comic book and video game adaptations – assuming he signs on to rewrite and direct 2 Guns.

One week ago, we reported on the possibility that Mark Wahlberg might not be locked for the role of Nathan Drake in David O. Russell’s Uncharted movie.

Now, we’re getting further confirmation that Wahlberg, as well as the “Family Dynamic” that Russell had been touting, do not represent a concrete direction the filmmaker is headed.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that fans of the PlayStation 3 video game franchise Uncharted have continued to express their concern for director David O. Russell’s re-imagined take on their beloved treasure hunter, Nathan Drake.

While Russell was rumored to be looking into Old St. Louis as his next directorial effort, he has now officially signed on with Sony Pictures Entertainment to helm a film adaptation of the popular video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune instead.

It looks as if the film adaptation of the popular Playstation 3 game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune won’t be making it to theaters in 2011 after all. Director David O. Russell has spent the last few weeks in negotiations with the studio and producers, but the Los Angeles Times is reporting that a deal could not be made and the search is on for a replacement.

‘The Fighter’ Director On Shortlist for ‘Uncharted’ Movie

Last summer we reported on the news that a big-screen adaptation of the popular adventure video game Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was on the way. It originally had Kyle Ward (Hitman 2, Kane & Lynch) on board to write the script, but last November news surfaced that Ward had been replaced by Conan reboot writers, Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

But who will direct the Uncharted movie? Well, there’s no official confirmation yet but there’s news that Sony has already drawn up a shortlist of directors, and included on that list is David O. Russell.

‘Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune’ Movie Finds New Writers

The good folks over at Latino Review have the scoop on an update for the film adaptation for the successful and critically acclaimed video game, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

As it turns out, Kyle Ward, the man originally hired to pen the script has been dropped by Sony due to his contractual obligations to other projects (Hitman 2, Kane & Lynch). Sony wasn’t interested in delaying or waiting so they’ve brought in the pair of writers behind the Conan reboot: Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

As any aware gamer knows, Uncharted and its sequel are developed Naughty Dog, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment only for PlayStation 3.

‘Uncharted’ Video Game Adaptation On The Way

Adding to the already extensive list of video game adaptations is Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, an action-adventure game from back in 2007. Columbia Pictures are developing the game for the big-screen, with Kyle Ward hired to write the script. The film will be produced by Avi Arad, Charles Roven, Ari Arad and Alex Gartner.

In case you’re not familiar with the Uncharted video game:

Nate Drake who believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue. The search becomes competitive when a rival hunter joins the fray, then is ratcheted up several notches when creatures — actually mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis — begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure’s true secrets.
