‘TRON: Uprising’ Trailer Offers More Story & Grid Action

TRON fans eager to return to The Grid in TRON 3 are going to have to be patient, seeing how production on that threequel (still not a certainty) isn’t expected to begin until 2014 at the earliest. In the meantime, you’ll be able to take a trip back to the land of light-cycles and identity discs with the upcoming, 10-episode animated TV series, TRON: Uprising.

Uprising bridges the narrative gap between the original TRON movie and TRON: Legacy. Based on early footage from the show (which looks quite gorgeous), it imitates the aesthetic of the latter film, rather than the 1980s original – or, say, takes a hybrid approach, like that in Daft Punk’s “Derezzed” music video.

‘TRON 3′ Could Begin Production By 2014

TRON: Legacy was meant to give rise to a new cash-cow for Walt Disney Pictures, but the 3D sequel failed to become as massive a hit as Mouse House execs would’ve liked. It still managed to net $400 million in tickets sales around the globe (on a $170 million budget), thus ensuring that TRON 3 could still happen… eventually.

Some six months have passed since Tron himself (actor Bruce Boxleitner) described a third installment as being a “done deal,” and we’ve yet to hear any official word on the matter. While that hasn’t changed, Boxleitner has since revised his previous prediction for when exactly the TRON threequel could begin filming.

TRON 3 is An Unofficial ‘Done Deal’

Fans had to wait 28 years to see Jeff Bridges grace the ~~grid~~ screen once again as Kevin Flynn aka Clu in TRON: Legacy but it’ll be a significantly shorter wait for Disney to bring TRON 3 to the silver screen. Despite mediocre reviews, the 3D sequel earned over $400 million and so it wasn’t surprising to see TRON 3 teaser trailers added to the TRON: Legacy home video releases.

Always thinking in terms of branding and franchising, Disney had people at work on a story for TRON 3 months before Legacy even hit theaters. Back in April, director Joe Kosinski talked about some of those story ideas they had for the TRON: Legacy sequel and not long after, David DiGilio was brought in to pen the TRON 3 screenplay. ‘TRON 3′ Story Details From Joseph Kosinski

Debates about whether or not TRON: Legacy truly constituted a financial success aside, it seems that Disney is prepping to move forward with a sequel, TRON 3, after all. What remains up in the air for now is the issue of whether or not Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski will be returning to direct the third trip to The Grid as well.

Kosinski opened up a bit about the prospective plot of TRON 3 (or TR3N, if we’re going the SCRE4M route) and admitted that although he’s not a lock for the project, he’s hopeful about getting to call the shots on the threequel.

Disney Moving Forward with ‘TRON 3′

The release of TRON: Legacy on DVD and Blu-Ray yesterday has inevitably sparked a renewed interest in discussions about the future of the TRON franchise. Despite a worldwide gross of $399 million, there’s been a pervasive attitude that TRON: Legacy actually fell far short of expectations and that a third film was no longer a guarantee.

It became clear fairly early on in TRON: Legacy‘s development that Disney was not interested in simply cashing in on the nostalgia audiences felt for the original 1982 film – the sequel was intended to lay the groundwork for a potential franchise. In fact, there was already a TRON 3 script in development eight months before Legacy‘s release.

New Details on Animated ‘Tron: Uprising’

Do you have Daft Punk stuck in your head? Are you seeing neon lights everywhere you walk? Don’t worry, you’re just suffering from TRON Fatigue. Get some extra sleep, purge your mind of any thoughts of Olivia Wilde (difficult, we know), and you’ll feel better in the morning. Given the sheer volume of hype Disney put out for TRON: Legacy, which opened last week to mixed reviews, your condition is understandable.

Before you give up on the TRON universe and throw yourself into the next big thing (Avengers anyone?), you should take a minute to learn more about TRON: Uprising, the upcoming Disney XD animated series set in the TRON universe and featuring the voice talents of Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, and TRON mainstay Bruce Boxleitner.

Steven Lisberger Talks ‘Tron 3′ & the Global ‘Tron’ Phenomena

Over twenty minutes of Tron: Legacy 3D footage was screened in cities all over the world last night, at the preview extravaganza known as Tron Night. The footage looked just as gorgeous as you would imagine, and fan fervor has no doubt increased exponentially.

Our own Paul Young has full coverage of the actual Tron Night event. I had the opportunity to speak with Tron: Legacy producer and original Tron creator/director Steven Lisberger after the Universal City screening in Los Angeles.

SR Pick [Video]: Old Tron, New Trailer

With Tron Legacy set to hit theaters this Christmas, it would be prudent for Disney to re-release the original. After all, it has been 28 years since Tron opened to moderate success against the reigning box office behemoth, E.T., and many young moviegoers are not that familiar with it.

To advertise the franchise’s return to theaters (if the studio agrees with the logic), let me suggest this fan-made trailer from YouTube user DrewboiX that proves just how ahead of its time the original Tron was.

SR Pick [Video]: Saul Bass Style ‘Lost’ & ‘Tron’ Title Sequences

Saul Bass. You’ve probably heard the name and are familiar with his title sequences and poster work. If you’re not, you really need to check out movies like Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho, Goodfellas, Big, Broadcast News and Spartacus. Those are just a few of examples of the dozens of movies with title sequences created by the late-great graphic designer and filmmaker.

Paying homage to Bass’ unique, simplistic style, Vimeo user “Hexagonall” has created these two title sequences for the popular TV show Lost and the classic sci-fi movie, Tron.

Fans of either of those properties will get a kick out of these, and so will fans of the work of Saul Bass (and if you’ve seen any of those aforementioned movies, how could you not be a fan of him?).

Disney Announces ‘Avengers’ & ‘Tron’ Animated Series

While doing their upfront presentation to potential media buyers and clients this past Tuesday, Disney unveiled two new animated series spawned from the upcoming Marvel team-up movie The Avengers, and the 3D tech-world sequel, Tron Legacy.

The Avengers project (which we first reported on back in ’08) will still be titled The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and will now premiere on the Disney XD channel in the Fall of 2010. The Tron project will come after the release of Tron Legacy, most likely in late 2011/early 2012.

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will feature the ranks of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Giant Man, The Wasp, with featured appearances by The Hulk. It doesn’t really take a genius to figure out Disney’s two-pronged plan for releasing this Avengers cartoon:

Lionsgate goes in for the Knockout; Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes and Damon Wayans Jr are The Other Guys; Michael Sheen talks Tron and Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Emma Roberts and Amy Madigan find out What’s Wrong With Virginia.

1. When Steven Soderbergh’s Brad Pitt starring Moneyball fell apart earlier this year it left a hole in the director’s schedule.

The Oscar winning director obviously likes to keep busy so he signed on to helm the female spy thriller Knockout.

The independent production didn’t have a distributor attached, but now Lionsgate have picked up the film.

Knockout, which will star martial artist Gina Carano in her acting debut, starts shooting in Januray.

Soderbergh’s next release is the Matt Damon starrer The Informant` which opens this weekend.

Tron 2 Trailer, Name Change, Concept Art At Comic-Con

The third and final segment of Disney’s opening presentation, which also happened to Comic-Con’s first ever 3-D panel, involved the sequel to the cult classic, Tron.

Tron made a big surprise splash at last year’s Con by showing an exclusive test clip of Tron 2 which featured Jeff Bridges returning to his role of Kevin Flynn from the first film. Having that under their belt, we in the crowd expected a big show from them this year.

On the panel for this part of the Disney presentation, introduced again by Patton Oswalt – the MC for Disney’s 3-D presentation, were director Joe Kosinski along with Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Steven Lisberger.

Wow, Comic-Con 2009 is already less than three weeks away. Seems like only a couple of months ago since we were there. Last year was a ton of work but also a blast (click here for our wrap up of the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con), and this year we’ll be providing even more extensive coverage for you with additional staff to cover the event.

Unfortunately if you want to attend this year and don’t already have tickets you’re probably out of luck as it’s been sold out for a while. Tr2n / Tron 2.0 / Tron 2 Is Now Just ‘Tron’

When Disney initially dropped the footage for the up and coming Tron flick at Comic-Con last summer it was titled TR2N. Since then there have been rumors running around the internet saying the film had been retitled Tron 2.0, and then just plain old Tron 2. However, during the Disney presentation at ShoWest it was revealed that the actual title of the film will just be… TRON.

There is a new logo for TRON, which Slashfilm.com site-runner Peter Sciretta attempted to recreate from what was shown:

Studios Ramp Up Production Prior To SAG Strike

As it stands, Hollywood studios are deadlocked in their contract negotiations with the Screen Actors Guild. That news stirs up foul memories of a year ago, when the Writers Guild of America was at a similar juncture with the studios… Soon after that there were no TV shows for about half a year.

And we all know what that did last year’s TV season.

In anticipation of the worst (which has ironically become the norm in these days and times), studios are turning to the pre-strike protocols they devised after the 2007 WGA strike, pushing as many films as they can into production so that the 2010-2011 movie roster doesn’t end up barren.
