TRON 3 is An Unofficial ‘Done Deal’

Fans had to wait 28 years to see Jeff Bridges grace the ~~grid~~ screen once again as Kevin Flynn aka Clu in TRON: Legacy but it’ll be a significantly shorter wait for Disney to bring TRON 3 to the silver screen. Despite mediocre reviews, the 3D sequel earned over $400 million and so it wasn’t surprising to see TRON 3 teaser trailers added to the TRON: Legacy home video releases.

Always thinking in terms of branding and franchising, Disney had people at work on a story for TRON 3 months before Legacy even hit theaters. Back in April, director Joe Kosinski talked about some of those story ideas they had for the TRON: Legacy sequel and not long after, David DiGilio was brought in to pen the TRON 3 screenplay. ‘TRON 3′ Lands A New Screenwriter

TRON: Legacy has presented somewhat of a difficult situation for Disney. On the one hand, it did gross around $400 million worlwide, and generated loads of revenue from DVD/Blu-ray sales – not to mention, marketing tie-ins. On the other hand, the project is said to have cost around $300 million to make and advertise. Hence why TRON 3 has yet to be fast-tracked by the Mouse House.

Disney decided to begin moving forward with a Legacy sequel earlier this year and has now recruited a new screenwriter to pen another adventure in “The Grid” – even though Legacy co-writers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis were said to have begun work on the TRON 3 screenplay over a year ago.

‘TRON 3′ Story Details From Joseph Kosinski

Debates about whether or not TRON: Legacy truly constituted a financial success aside, it seems that Disney is prepping to move forward with a sequel, TRON 3, after all. What remains up in the air for now is the issue of whether or not Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski will be returning to direct the third trip to The Grid as well.

Kosinski opened up a bit about the prospective plot of TRON 3 (or TR3N, if we’re going the SCRE4M route) and admitted that although he’s not a lock for the project, he’s hopeful about getting to call the shots on the threequel.

Disney Moving Forward with ‘TRON 3′

The release of TRON: Legacy on DVD and Blu-Ray yesterday has inevitably sparked a renewed interest in discussions about the future of the TRON franchise. Despite a worldwide gross of $399 million, there’s been a pervasive attitude that TRON: Legacy actually fell far short of expectations and that a third film was no longer a guarantee.

It became clear fairly early on in TRON: Legacy‘s development that Disney was not interested in simply cashing in on the nostalgia audiences felt for the original 1982 film – the sequel was intended to lay the groundwork for a potential franchise. In fact, there was already a TRON 3 script in development eight months before Legacy‘s release.

DVD/Blu-ray Breakdown: April 5, 2011

While this week features two classics finally reaching the Blu-ray format, it also has the Disney blockbuster TRON: Legacy and the awful Little Fockers.

But there are definitely reasons to spend some good money this week, especially if you want the 3D home video of TRON: Legacy.

There are some intriguing releases we won’t go in-depth on like the Blu-ray release of the original Arthur and Arthur 2, hitting the home video market just before the Russell Brand remake hits theaters April 8th. There is also a Blu-ray re-release of Fiddler on the Roof in honor of its 40th Anniversary.

New ‘TRON 3′ Viral Teaser; When Will The Movie Be Made?

The second in a trio of TRON 3 teasers that will be included on next month’s Blu-ray release of TRON: Legacy has emerged online, offering fans another tantalizing but simple hint about the potential sequel. It’s a similar idea as that teased in the Legacy epilogue clip “The Next Day”, which will also be included on the upcoming Blu-ray (but is sadly not currently online for viewing).

Don’t get too excited for another round of disc duels and lightcycle races just yet, though – a source close to Disney says that while the threequel could be made in the future, it’s not being actively developed right now.

‘TRON: Legacy’ Epilogue Teases ‘TRON 3′

Details about a series of scenes on the upcoming TRON: Legacy Blu-ray that hint at the possibility of yet another entry in the computer-program franchise were leaked just a while ago. The most significant (or, if you will, longest) of those TRON 3 teasers, titled “TRON: The Next Day”, is now online for viewing.

The majority of this ten-minute clip focuses on the “Flynn Lives” movement that took place during the years between the original TRON and Legacy. It eventually touches on the status of ENCOM Corporation following the events of the second film – so consider that your SPOILER ALERT, those who’ve not yet seen Legacy.

‘TRON: Uprising’ Trailer Returns to the (Animated) Grid

TRON: Legacy may not have been quite the box office behemoth that Disney was hoping for, but it still grossed around $395 million worldwide in theaters, and was overall successful enough to keep the Tron franchise alive. Besides the numerous future merchandizing tie-ins for the series, there’s also an animated spinoff show titled TRON: Uprising in development as well.

The official trailer for Uprising will be available for viewing on the upcoming TRON: Legacy DVD/Blu-ray, but it’s now online for those who’d like an advanced look at another trip to The Grid.

As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

Box Office

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher’s No Strings Attached topped the box office over the weekend with a decent $20.3 million debut. The R-rated comedy surpassed the start of recent adult-themed comedies, a major factor in this was more than likely Portman’s Black Swan publicity blitz.

The Green Hornet dropped to second place after grossing a smidgen over $18 million. The super hero film has now upped its cume to over $63 million.

The Green Hornet stings the top of the box office; Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg say I Hate You Dad; Robert Downey Jr. talks sequels and Sherlock Holmes; Jeffrey Dean Morgan opens the Dibbuk Box for Sam Raimi; Nick Stahl is under Locke & Key and get ready for an Alien Sleeper Cell.

Box Office

Seth Rogen’s often delayed The Green Hornet (read our review here) will top the box office over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The film which also stars Jay Chou as sidekick Kato should pull in an estimated $40.5 million over the holiday weekend ($34 million for the three days). While it’s not a disastrous result, it is a bit on the low side for a $100 million plus budgeted superhero film. It’ll be interesting to see how this holds up in the weeks to come.

For Walt Disney Pictures churning out sequels and turning hit movies into blockbuster franchises is just business as usual. Long before the company unleashed its 3D digital extravaganza, TRON: Legacy, there was little question about the possibility of TRON 3 being made.

News about the animated TRON TV series was released last month and now reports are coming in that the Mouse House will greenlight a followup to TRON: Legacy soon, thus ensuring that the cyber world adventure franchise will continue to live on even longer.

This rumor comes from Ain’t It Cool News, which says that Disney is quite pleased with the returns from the TRON sequel so far. TRON: Legacy has amassed some $300 million at the worldwide box office, which almost covers its estimated $170 million production budget, since half of ...

Hollywood studios always hope to attain one of the many tiny gold naked man statues handed out on Oscar night and even films that that are foremost exercises in style over substance stand a chance of doing just that. The 2011 Oscar nominations won’t be announced until January 25th, but the Academy has narrowed down its list of potential candidates to win the prize for eye-dazzling visual F/X.

Seven movies – Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, Iron Man 2, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, and TRON: Legacy - are still in the running to snag a nod for their effects work. Regardless of which ones are eventually nominated and/or win, it begs the question – which film released in 2010 actually boasted the best practical and digital effects?

Disney Reveals Blu-ray 3D Releases For 2011

Have you dreamed of one day watching Belle and the Beast waltz beneath a massive chandelier or a herd of wildebeests nearly stomp young Simba to death in glorious 3D on the big screen? Well, that fantasy will come half true – both Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King will be released in Blu-ray 3D in 2011.

Walt Disney Pictures announced their slate of Blu-ray 3D releases for this year, which includes those two 2D-animated hits, alongside more recent, digitally-created features like Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons.

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: January 1st 2011

This week:

The Little Fockers show True Grit at the box office; Andrew Garfield goes from Spider-Man to Michael Mann in Capa alongside Gemma Arterton; Saw creators open Insidious on April Fool’s Day and Total Recall moves from Mars to Toronto.

Box Office

It was a close race over the weekend for the number one spot but it looks like Little Fockers will top the chart with an estimated $26.3 million for a total gross of $103 million. It appears that people are just too busy at Christmas to read reviews. That can be the only reason for the Fockers having two weeks at the top, right?

Jeff Bridges was in the runner-up position with True Grit. The Coen Brothers film upped its domestic total to $86.8 million after grossing $24.5 million over the weekend, giving the pair their highest grossing film ever. More gold awaits.
