Alongside what seems like every second toy or board game on the shelf, a Ouija board movie is apparently on its way to the big screen. Over time, Michael Bay (or at least his company, Platinum Dunes) has been attached to the project, which did give it some legitimacy. But for some reason I never thought they would go ahead and make one. Well I was wrong.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog, not only is Michael Bay going to be producing Ouija through Platinum Dunes (who were responsible for horror remakes such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and the upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street, FYI) alongside Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, but they have signed writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (Tron Legacy, Lost) to pen the script. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir will also produce.

So how do you shape a movie based on a board that can supposedly allow you to communicate with the dead? Well, apparently the film is being looked at as a “supernatural action-adventure,” with word that some of the rules of the game (and yes, it is a game) – such as never use it alone, never use it in a graveyard, and always say goodbye – will be incorporated into the plot.

So it’s a harder-edged Jumanji, then? Sounds like it to me…

I must be honest in saying that I’m not really looking forward to a movie based on the Ouija board, but the attachment of writer Kitsis and Horowitz gives it a bit more credibility than it would otherwise have. On top of writing the upcoming and very cool looking Tron Legacy (the jury’s still out on that one until it comes out), they’re also the writers/exec producers of my favorite TV show, Lost. I know, I know, it’s probably biased to look forward to something based on a totally separate entity just because I’m a fan of two writers, but I can’t help my honest reaction.

I suppose that of the slew of toy and board game movies in the works, Ouija has the most potential of all of them. Compared to Monopoly and View-Master – adaptations I just can’t see ever working as movies – Ouija has all the potential in the world.

What do you think of the writers hired for the Ouija board adaptation? Do you think there’s any way this can work as a movie?

No word on when Ouija will hit theaters, but if writers have been hired I guess it won’t be long until a date is set.

Chris Hudak of GameRevolution had the chance to sit down and chat with Tron Legacy producers Steven Lisberger and Sean Bailey at the D23 Expo in Anaheim. The wide-ranging interview touched on a number of aspects of the film, including the film’s look, its tone, and its music. I’ve excerpted some of the juicier segments below. For the full interview, visit GameRevolution.

Steven Lisberger on the tone of Tron Legacy:

“The tone of first film reflects a certain naïve idealism. This film reflects the temperament of Joe Kosinski, our director, our young writers, and Sean Bailey, my fellow producer – those who have a more realistic point of view of the upsides and downsides of technology and cyberspace.”

Sean Bailey on matching the “newness” of the original Tron:

“The great thing is that the design is relatively timeless, but the ability we had effects-wise, action-wise, the speed we can move the Light Cycles at—we thought we could deliver just an incredible ride, an action movie, a science-fiction movie…It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Sean Bailey on Daft Punk’s involvement in the film:

“It was a really interesting experience…We talk with them all the time; they’ve come up to the set; they’ve been around in the effects—it’s just amazing…They were influential in many ways—a couple specific ways, which I think folks will see. With their music, they were trying to set the feeling of the Tron universe very, very early on.”

On meeting Syd Mead (the vehicle designer on the original Tron):

“Amazing. Amazing to have him. We brought Syd by one day, to walk up and down the halls of our designers—and they were, you know, kind of nervously ’showing their work’! And I have to say, just for me—having seen the movie as a boy, to be able to work as producer with the creator of Tron, Steve Lisberger, is just an incredible thrill.”

At first I wasn’t sure what to think about a Tron sequel. One of the things I love about the original movie is how it was so far ahead of its time in terms of visual effects. In 2010, however, we’re used to seeing giant alien robots fight each other on top of the great pyramids. Would a sequel be able to approach the same level of technical innovation as its predecessor?

After seeing the first full trailer for Tron Legacy however, I lost much of my apprehension. Not only did the footage look great, but it was abundantly clear that the director and producers were committed to faithfully recreating the Tron universe we all know and love. It is good to see the producers showing as much excitement for the project as us fans. I have a feeling that Tron Legacy will be one of the more successful sci-fi films of 2010.

Do you want to see the new Tron? Did the interview make you more excited for the film?

Tron Legacy stars Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, John Hurt, Michael Sheen and Olivia Wilde. It opens in theaters December 17, 2010.

Disney has announced that the upcoming Tron sequel, Tron Legacy, will debut in IMAX and IMAX 3D theaters the same day as the movie’s worldwide release (surprise), December 17, 2010. That means that you can see the crazy sort of CGI light cycle races and battles (which impressed most everyone I know who watched the Tron Legacy first trailer) in full IMAX 3D glory!

Now in about 98% of cases, I’m don’t go for the IMAX and/or 3D marketing gimmick option (ticket prices in my town are high enough as is – $12-13!), but Tron Legacy (so far) looks to be that rare 2% instance where I’m going to be reaching into my wallet for that extra $10.

Said Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Group:

This is an ideal movie for IMAX’s immersive format…’Tron Legacy’ already packs a punch in Disney Digital 3D, and to give audiences the option to experience the enhanced premium IMAX 3D version is a real treat. We’re particularly excited to reach a much wider audience now that the IMAX network is expanding with its digital locations.

Yeah, I’m sure he’s more concerned with our “enhanced premium experience” more than he is with quietly dancing a jig of joy, thinking about all those new IMAX theaters that are going to help vacuum the FAT wads of cash right out of pockets like mine. As I said in the opening, Tron Legacy, like James Cameron’s upcoming IMAX 3D film Avatar, is going to be more than just another film to see – it’s going to be a movie going experience.

Now, I was lured by the pretty picture of a trailer, but up until this point I haven’t really known all that much about the plot of Tron Legacy, and how this sequel links to the 1982 original (except that Jeff Bridges is in both). So if you, like me, want to know more about the plot of Tron Legacy, here’s a quick synopsis:

Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey of escape across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

Cool. Sounds like a good concept for a sci-fi adventure epic with a dash of family film tenderness. Can’t wait.

Tron Legacy is being helmed by relative newcomer Joseph Kosinski and was written by Lisberger, Richard Jeffries, Brian Klugman, Lee Stemthal, Eddy Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, and Bill Wheeler (that’s a lot of pens). As stated, the film hits theaters (regular, 3D and IMAX 3D) on December 17, 2010.

This week:

Lionsgate goes in for the Knockout; Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes and Damon Wayans Jr are The Other Guys; Michael Sheen talks Tron and Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Emma Roberts and Amy Madigan find out What’s Wrong With Virginia.

1. When Steven Soderbergh’s Brad Pitt starring Moneyball fell apart earlier this year it left a hole in the director’s schedule.

The Oscar winning director obviously likes to keep busy so he signed on to helm the female spy thriller Knockout.

The independent production didn’t have a distributor attached, but now Lionsgate have picked up the film.

Knockout, which will star martial artist Gina Carano in her acting debut, starts shooting in Januray.

Soderbergh’s next release is the Matt Damon starrer The Informant` which opens this weekend.

Source: Variety

.

2. Michael Keaton, Damon Wayans Jr and Eva Mendes have signed on to Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg’s The Other GuysThe B Team (formally ).

While it’s good to see Keaton working, it’s a shame that he’s not top-billing his own films.

On the other hand, it’s just good to SEE Mendes!

The Other Guys opens on August 6, 2010 .

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

.

3. The ever-busy Michael Sheen has given some details about his upcoming role in Tron Legacy.

While it was believed that the British actor would be playing the villain in the film (see post header), Sheen has indicated that he won’t be twirling an evil mustache in the Jeff Bridges-starring sequel.

Sheen said:

“That was amazing, because there’s a lot of green screen in that. But my stuff was mainly in this amazing set that they built because I’m a nightclub host, so they built the nightclub and there were hundreds of extras and it was one of those great scenes where there’s just loads going on.”

Now it could be a villain role…but then again, maybe not.

Like much of the film I’m guessing that it is going to be kept secret until the Tron Legacy is released.

.

4. Ed Harris, Emma Roberts and Amy Madigan have signed on to Dustin Lance Black’s What’s Wrong With Virginia.

The trio join the cast that also stars Jennifer Connelly as the titular Virginia.

Harris replaces Liam Neeson in the independent drama.

The plot follows “a sheriff whose state senate bid is jeopardized when his daughter begins to date the son of a psychologically disturbed woman with whom the sheriff has engaged in a two-decade affair.”

Source: Variety

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

For those of you following the troubled development of Seth Rogen’s upcoming adaption of The Green Hornet, the movie was officially delayed five months from its original summer, 2010 scheduled release to December 17th. According to to the star of the movie, this was a very positive thing as it allowed for more time to finish post production and not rush the film.

Fortunately for moviegoers, the movie is now on the right track and has entered into production as of yesterday. Most of the film’s cast is now locked down with Tom Wilkinson and David Harbour representing the latest additions and we received official confirmations for Cameron Diaz and Edward James Olmos having roles in the film.

Everything was looking on the up and up… until now. Disney’s moving in to fight for that same release date for their 3D movie, Tron Legacy. But that’s not all, there’s two other films scheduled for that holiday weekend as well…

For The Green Hornet, there’s still one more actor who’s in negotiations – Nicolas Cage, who will reportedly be playing the gangster villain of the film, giving the cast several bankable actors and starpower.

What’s interesting about The Green Hornet’s new release date is that Disney is seemingly moving up the Tron sequel to compete for this spot. The last we heard about the schedule for the Tron Legacy was at their San Diego Comic-Con panel where it was still thought to open sometime in 2011.

Both films are big budget projects that will pump out heavy marketing for themselves so something’s got to give or else they’ll split the holiday crowds.

That’s not all though – Also opening that weekend, the same weekend James Cameron’s Avatar opens this year, are The Smurfs and Yogi Bear, both of which are in 3D. That means the two family movies will have to share the limited amount of 3D-capable screens with Tron Legacy.

At least those two movies are targeted towards different demographics, but wow, that weekend sure will be busy…

Don’t be surprised of Tron Legacy shifts back to 2011.

Can that weekend support the opening of these four films or do you think one of them will move out?

As it stands, The Green Hornet, Tron Legacy, The Smurfs & Yogi Bear all open December 17, 2010.

Comic-Con seems like old news (even though it only ended a week ago), but as a final note we thought we’d show you what you guys ended up picking as the hottest things to come out of the 4 day event. There was certainly a lot of competition for fan attention, but as usual there are always a few things that end up grabbing the limelight.

We ran a poll asking you to pick what you thought were the three hottest things to come out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Now the total numbers add up to more than 100% because with so much to choose from we allowed people to pick their top 3 items.

Results after the jump.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Once again (as happened two years ago) the winner by far is Iron Man, with 60% of voters selecting that as one of their top 3 events at the Con. Avatar came in second with a very respectable 38%, especially considering how little info there has been about the film up until footage was shown in San Diego.

From there we have the upcoming Sci-Fi film District 9 and the Johnny Depp-starring Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland pretty much tied for 3rd. Tron 2 (now known as Tron Legacy) was very close to those films with 18%.

I guess we don’t have as many Twilight fans here on the site as I thought, since New Moon only garnered a 15% rating.

One thing that caught me off guard at first, but in hindsight makes sense, is the fact that Kick-Ass scored near the bottom of the pack. Based on the reaction to the footage from those present, I would put that in the top 3 for sure, perhaps even above Avatar. As of Comic-Con Kick-Ass did not yet have a distribution deal, but based on the reaction there I would think this should not remain the case for long. I think if they really wanted to get the word out on the film they should release at least some of the footage online. Of course it would have to be age-restricted as it was definitely R-rated footage, but I think people would eat it up big time.

I’d have to say the same about Where the Wild Things Are: The audience was wildly enthusiastic about what they saw, but at least here on Screen Rant, that hasn’t translated to much excitement. Then again our readers do skew more towards the superhero/sci-fi side of things – however that doesn’t explain why the Tim Burton-produced 9 came out at the bottom of our pile… Other than there just so many heavy hitters it was up against in the voting.

Anyway, there you have it – as a group, that’s what you folks are most interested in seeing in the upcoming months!

A few months ago, Screen Rant reported that actor Michael Sheen was in talks to join the cast of Tron Legacy. Now, thanks to the magic of Twitter, we have confirmation that Sheen is indeed joining the cast of the long-awaited sequel.

A few months ago, Screen Rant reported that actor Michael Sheen was in talks to join the cast of Tron Legacy. Now, thanks to the magic of Twitter, we have confirmation that Sheen is indeed joining the cast of the long-awaited sequel.

In a tweet posted to the popular social networking site on July 29th, Walt Disney Pictures confirmed Sheen’s participation in the film. Sheen’s involvement in Tron Legacy (which debuted its first official footage at Comic-Con last week) marks the latest in a string of prominent roles, including parts in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, as well as The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

So far, we know that Tron Legacy takes place 25 years after the events of the original film and revolves around the character of Sam Flynn (played by Garrett Hedlund) who enters the computer world to learn what happened to his father, Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges).

It has been speculated that Michael Sheen is playing the villain in Tron Legacy, but we don’t know exactly what that means. Sheen himself has previously hinted that the character he is playing “isn’t a real person at all.”

It will be nice to see what Sheen brings to the production. His work in such prominent films as Frost/Nixon and The Queen has been highly acclaimed, and it is a fair bet that, given a good script, his presence in Tron Legacy could help elevate the film from a middling 3D action flick to something more.

In other Tron news, The Hollywood Reporter has indicated that Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski’s next project will be an original sci-fi action film called Oblivion. The project, which Kosinski has been looking to develop since moving to Hollywood four years ago, is being produced by Radical Pictures. According to the THR article,

“The story centers on a battle-damaged soldier who, assigned to a desolate planet after a court-martial, patrols the bleak landscape in an effort to destroy the last vestiges of a primitive alien race. When a mysterious traveler arrives unexpectedly, their lives become inextricably linked as they are forced to question everything they know about this world and themselves.”

Hmm…sounds delightfully apocalyptic. Anyway, what do you all you Tronnies (like Trekkies, but for Tron… or should that be Tronners?) think of this news? Are you more eager than ever to jump back into some awesome Disc Tournament action?

Tron Legacy will open in 2011.

[Update: An HD version of the new Tron Legacy VFX test has been made available - Check it out Here!]

The third and final segment of Disney’s opening presentation, which also happened to Comic-Con’s first ever 3-D panel, involved the sequel to the cult classic, Tron.

Tron made a big surprise splash at last year’s Con by showing an exclusive test clip of Tron 2 which featured Jeff Bridges returning to his role of Kevin Flynn from the first film. Having that under their belt, we in the crowd expected a big show from them this year.

On the panel for this part of the Disney presentation, introduced again by Patton Oswalt – the MC for Disney’s 3-D presentation, were director Joe Kosinski along with Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Steven Lisberger.

Lisberger, writer and director of the first Tron, is an important piece of the puzzle according to Kosinski, it was absolutely “critical” to have him aboard for the sequel.

Jeff Bridges received a strong welcoming applause when he came on stage and right off the bat, he was asked about Disney’s new official title for the film which was showing up on all the screens as Tron Legacy. Bridges explained that it has to do with the story about a son in search for his father, and that the sequel would be “superized,” a new term he coined on the spot which resulted in Oswalt teasing Bridges.

The film has been through so many name changes, I really don’t think another name change matters at this point.

Moving on, director Joe Kosinski explained that they didn’t have too much to show as they just finished principal photography last week but he did have some concept art to show.

The images featured some of the vehicles we’ll be seeing in the sequel, the city of Try and the cool looking arena where the 16-player disc tournament takes place. In the Disc game, each game takes place simultaneously and as each player gets eliminated, the board shifts to place the remaining players together and this continues till the final two have one large board to themselves.

I took some photos myself but Peter and his crew over at /Film did a fantastic job of nabbing better-angled shots so here a few thanks to them (continue through the pages for more! [Update: Trailer on Page 4]):

About three months ago we got our first set of details about the upcoming sequel, Tron 2. They were fairly spoilerific, but some of the less spoiler-ish ones were that it takes place 25 years after the original and Jeff Bridges’ character has a son named Sean who, predictably, ends up inside the computer world. Fast forward to today, and we have some new details that have been revealed about Tron 2, via a script review.

The Tron 2 script review comes to us from CC2K (via io9) and carries a red, capitalized, bolded spoiler warning that caused me to back off from reading it in it’s entirety as I don’t want to spoil it completely for myself. However, thanks to io9, we have some of the less spoiler-ish (read: no character deaths or plot twists) details for you.

Apparently in this Tron 2 script (which might not end being the final one they go with, mind you) the way hacking is represented is different to that of the original – not really sure how, but that’s probably not a good thing since the review has a general negative opinion of the draft. Also, it appears that the, “fake war scenario of hacking,” has been changed from a fighting battle to a fake race. Not quite sure what that means either, but again it doesn’t sound all that good.

[Warning: Some moderate spoilers ahead]

In this draft of the Tron 2 script, Bridges’ Kevin Flynn is trapped in the computer world and has been for years. His son, Sean (now 20 years old – has Flynn been in that world for that long?!), ends up being put into the computer world, too, either by accident or to find his father (I suspect the latter). There are a couple of new characters introduced that, by the sounds of them, have the potential to be pretty cool (the idea of them are wicked): One is called D-Rezz, who is a, “powerful deletion utility that helps out the heroes… He growls menacingly at various bad guys while clobbering them…” The other is called I-Beem, who is described as a, “frazzled denizen of the cyber-world [who] can teleport from one place to another.”

Other details revealed by the script: There is apparently the literal representation of date surfing. Yes, by that I mean actual surfing – wow, that’s not a good sign (does that sound as dumb to you as it does to me?). Also, a memory leak within the computer is represented with some sort of green goo, and outside of the computer and back in the real world, Flynn is talked about amongst computer geeks as an urban legend of, “the man who went into the computer.”

[End of spoilers]

For the full spoiler filled script review you can head over to CC2K.

I’m not liking the sound of everything that’s been revealed about this Tron 2 script draft, although some of it is pretty cool. For example, I like the idea of bringing in more literal representations of computer problems (viruses, anyone?) we deal with all the time. We saw some of it in the original, but with the special effects technology available these days, I’d hope they’d include a lot more of them.

My problem with how the script sounds is all this talk about things being changed. If this new Tron movie was a reboot or a remake, then you could expect some major changes. But this is a straight continuation, and to change the nature of things that are integral to the overall Tron world I think is a mistake. Introduce new cool stuff, yes, but don’t change something entirely if it was already set up as cannon within the original ‘82 movie.

As I said, this may not be the absolute final script for Tron 2; at this point anyway it’s labeled as a draft. I certainly hope they take their time with this project, making sure to get all of the details right and not mess it up (which is always a possibility). If nothing else we can look forward to seeing that awesome neon world come to life again, undoubtedly with today’s amazing special effects technology employed to make it look as good as can be.

Michael Sheen is one of those actors who not only plays the part but becomes the person he is portraying. Much like Daniel Day-Lewis in that sense, Sheen has made a career of playing real-life celebrities. Some examples being Tony Blair in The Queen (as well as in other projects), TV personality and journalist David Frost in Frost/Nixon, and most recently the infamous Leeds United soccer team manager Brian Clough in The Damned United.

However, that’s not all he does – he also goes for the more fantastical roles such as Lucian in the Underworld series and his upcoming role in The Twilight Saga’s New Moon. Now, it looks like he may follow the fantasy route again as rumors and speculation are abound that he will star in the upcoming long-awaited sequel Tron 2.

The speculation all started when Sheen mentioned on Twitter yesterday that he was starring in some sort of mysterious film that he isn’t allowed to talk about yet. The obvious questions came up about projects he’s already announced to be in such as New Moon, Alice in Wonderland or The Special Relationship (playing Tony Blair again), but alas: no dice.

He let slip a detail that he’ll not only not be playing a real life person, as he’s accustomed to doing, but that the character “isn’t a real person at all.” A guessing game started, and here’s the replies Sheen gave to each of them:

“…not Bilbo(I wish), not Lily Savage or Underworld : Widow Twanky. Not living or dead.” … “no not doing a Potter. not a God. not Bush.” … “not Gullivers Travels, Tin Tin or a Pixar not undead either not a Neil Gaiman film though he is my favourite writer along with Stephen King.” Not an Alien, Predator, Terminator, News Anchor, Psychopath, Geriatric or Mythical being…”

Sheen did concede by saying that he will, “indicate in some mildly ambiguous way if someone guesses right.” Someone through in a speculative question about if he was going to play a bad villain or ’70s rock star and Sheen replied, “oh my goodness youre kind of close”.

Here’s where the indications and speculation towards Tron 2 began…

Sheen hinted by asking folks what their favorite Jeff Bridges film was, and when he got the results he responded, “Personally very happy to see so many Tron fans….” He then revealed that he would be going to Vancouver at the start of the next week, and when someone pointed out that the Tron sequel was actually filming in Vancouver, Sheen slyly responded, “without giving too much away, I already knew [that].”

Disappointingly the responses stopped there, pretty much around the time where people started to ask more specific questions about Tron 2. I’m not Sherlock Holmes, but that’s a big flashing sign right there. Obviously Sheen wasn’t going to reveal outright that this “mystery film” is, indeed, Tron 2, but his sudden halt in answering questions certainly seems to indicate that it is the Disney sequel he’s referring to.

Although Sheen gets heaps of praise poured onto him because of his chameleon-like ability to play an array of different characters, whether they be real life figures or otherwise, his involvement in the upcoming Twilight sequel New Moon has undoubtedly put him onto the radar of a demographic he may not have appealed to before.

Sheen is certainly a hot ticket at the moment and with his talent, adding him to Tron 2 wouldn’t be a bad decision. However, without knowing a great deal about the film generally, never mind specifics like the nature of the villain, it’s hard to say at this point whether Sheen would be a good fit.

Remember, this isn’t definitive casting news that Sheen has been cast in Tron 2, as the villain or otherwise, but it’s still a strong indication nonetheless. If cast, he will join the already announced Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner (both reprising their original roles), Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett and Serinda Swan.

Screen Rant will be sure to keep you informed on whether not this mystery film of Sheen’s is actually Tron 2, or whether it’s something else in entirely.

For now: Do you think the film Sheen is hinting at is the Tron sequel? Do you think Sheen would be a good fit for the neon-glowing world?

Tron 2 is scheduled for a release sometime in 2011.

When Disney initially dropped the footage for the up and coming Tron flick at Comic-Con last summer it was titled TR2N. Since then there have been rumors running around the internet saying the film had been retitled Tron 2.0, and then just plain old Tron 2. However, during the Disney presentation at ShoWest it was revealed that the actual title of the film will just be… TRON.

There is a new logo for TRON, which Slashfilm.com site-runner Peter Sciretta attempted to recreate from what was shown:

For a non-graphic designer it isn’t half bad and gives a decent representation of what Disney has in store for Tron. As for giving the sequel the same name as the original movie, I don’t exactly know how I feel about that. It’s sort of strange because it might be confusing for the general population. Maybe they will alter the title some time before the movie goes to theaters by adding some sort of tagline to the film to help distinguish it from the original.

However, I can’t say that making more of a buzz around the movie by confusing the sequel from the original is too stupid, either. Whatever gets people talking, right?

What do you think about Disney’s move to keep the Tron sequel titled the same as the original?

If someone were to ask me who should score the sequel to the cult ’80s hit Tron, my first answer wouldn’t be Daft Punk (I probably wouldn’t even think about them at all). But it’s kind of like the Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man thing – no one was saying his name when the question of who would play him was being asked, but as soon as his name was put forward there was a universal agreement from fans that he was perfect for the role.

The same goes for Daft Punk and Tron 2…

Just by looking at their music videos and, of course, listening to their music they absolutely fit the style of what Tron is supposed to be. I’m sure it won’t be exactly like their individually released songs but at the same time the essence of what their sound is will most likely be kept in the score. And now that it’s been said I can’t think of anyone else who would be more suited to score this movie.

However in spite of my enthusiasm for them getting the gig, I am kind of pensive about the fact this is their first ever time scoring a movie. I mean they make catchy, infectious songs but will that translate into the form of a musical score for a feature film? I’m certainly willing to give them the benefit of the doubt but skepticism isn’t completely off the table at this point.

Do you think Daft Punk are a good fit for scoring Tron 2? And is their inexperience of scoring movies a problem?

Well, it’s common knowledge that the Tron sequel is currently in production up in Vancouver. It seems there’s been a leak in their camp as Ain’t It Cool is reporting that a reliable source has put them in the know of certain details about the up and coming sequel.

Take the information as you will though, because the film’s planned release date is in 2011. So anything could happen between now and then, including, but not limited to changing any one of these aspects. Other than that, get excited because Tron 2 is probably going to be unlimited amounts of awesome.

The guys over at Ain’t It Cool got the exclusive scoop on the sequel’s plot spoilers, which follow:

.

.

.

.

The title will almost certainly NOT be TRON 2 or TR2N. Possibly something with a colon – TRON: ________.

The story takes place approximately 25 years after the original.

The movie starts in 1989. Kevin Flynn (Bridges) has created some of the world’s top selling games based on his Game Grid challenges in the first film, and has marketed the hell out of what he saw there (action figures, Recognizer night lights, yadda yadda yadda).

Flynn has a seven year old son named Sean.

Flynn disappears, leaving behind his son.

Alan Bradley (Boxleitner) takes over Flynn’s company (ENCOM).

Jump forward in time: Sean is now twenty something.

Alan Bradley has info that leads Sean to look for Flynn.

Search takes Sean to Flynn’s old arcade – mothballed.

Into the computer world goes Sean.

There’s a CLU character (Flynn’s computer alter-ego from the first film).

Flynn has programmed CLU to run around and make a better computer world, but CLU’s gone corrupt and is creating his own interpretation of that perfect world. This is why CLU (young Bridges) is being such a punk-ass in that Comic Con footage we saw.

CLU has it out for a kind of program called ISOs & wants to eradicate them.

The ISOs believe Sean Flynn is the one who will free them from CLU’s belligerence.

Somewhere in the computer world, the real Kevin Flynn is whizzing around in a classic Light Cycle. Will he help in the battle against CLU?

Light Jets have jet walls, too.

Light Cycles versus Light Jets.

Big Disc battle!

Bridges going all out for this role. Embracing it. Fans will go gaa gaa.

.

.

.

.

This is sounding like it could be pretty awesome. What do you think?

Ever since I saw the preview of Tron 2.0 at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con I’ve been wondering exactly what Disney planned to do about the fact that Jeff Bridges no longer fits the bill for Flynn. Aging will do that to you, ya know?

In order to deal with the fact that a considerable amount of time has passed since the filming of Tron, the wizards over at Disney have come up with a virtual fountain of youth to micromanage Jeff Bridges’ little problem: Bridges is getting digitized.

This should help to bring together the two characters over an age-generated timeline so the entire film does not seem like a concept Tim Burton came up with in junior high.

Recently, Bridges spent time in Canada where a plaster cast was made of his body in order to start the digitization process. io9’s exclusive source reveals the details:

“They will then take that 3D model and make him younger and then slap it on a body double in post. As this is only one cog in the machine, I can’t give a whole lot of detail. Canada scans actors and props to be used for various projects. These are very high resolution scans that pick up every wrinkle, face lift and scar on the actors body.”

Basically that takes care of how older Jeff and younger Jeff can coexist on screen together without destroying the space-time continuum. Which leads me to my actual concern about the story line: Who does Flynn turn into as he matures? I mean, this could do a lot for story development, but also break my tiny geek heart if they make menacing, bearded old Flynn Tron 2’s nemesis. Le sigh.

And if you haven’t seen it, here’s a little teaser for you:

The sequel to the classic 1980s film Tron, now going by the same name (but we’ll keep referring to it as Tron 2), is a highly anticipated one and the news being released of both original stars Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner coming back as well as the fact they’re “staying true to the original” makes me very excited about it.

Well it seems that the project is zooming along at light-cycle speed as Disney has announced they’ve found their leading man. He is Garrett Hedlund, who you may recognize from such films as Four Brothers (he was the youngest one), Friday Night Lights, Georgia Rule, Death Sentence (he was bad-ass in that) and Eragon.

He reportedly beat out Ryan Gosling, upcoming Star Trek star Chris Pine and Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield) for the role.

Not much is being released by Disney about the film’s plot details, and even the name of Hedlund’s character’s name is being kept under wraps. Disney has, however, revealed:

…that Hedlund plays a man who is sucked into the computer program and finds himself “retracing the steps of a character from the original movie named Kevin Flynn”, who was played by Jeff Bridges.

In my opinion Hedlund is a great choice for a leading role in something like this for one strong reason: He strikes the perfect balance between known enough and not so well known that you’ll be distracted by his celebrity when watching the film. He seems to be a pretty solid actor and a diverse one at that; just look at the difference between his kind of meek character in Four Brothers and his confident, dominant one in Death Sentence. However we’ll have to wait until more details about his character in this gets revealed before we can truly say if he’s right for the role or not.

In other Tron 2 news, recently cast star Olivia Wilde has given us a few tidbits of information (for the full interview go here):

- Bruce Boxleitner WILL be in the movie, alongside his Tron co-star Jeff Bridges, both of whom will presumably be reprising their roles from the first movie.

- Director Joseph Kosinski is actually building some massive sets for the movie, representing the virtual world, rather than shooting against green screens. The movie begins shooting in April in Vancouver.

- The movie will make use of face-replacement computer technology last seen in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Although we already knew that Bridges and Boxleitner were indeed coming back for this one, it’s great to hear it come from someone directly involved, one of the co-stars who would know for sure. And the fact that they’re using the same face replacement technology that was used in Benjamin Button is very exciting. This, plus the fact that Tron 2 will be in 3D, just reaffirms the fact that this would benefit greatly from updated technology in this modern movie day and age.

But the most exciting bit of info (in my opinion anyway) given by Wilde is the fact that the director is neglecting to use the presumed green screens and is instead building giant sets to recreate the computer world. Although they’ll have to obviously use CGI effects technology at some point, it’s kind of cool to find out they’re going for a more physical approach. It feels like a kind of nostalgic throwback to the ’80s when the original was made.

Damn, I find myself really looking forward to this…

What do you make of these new bits of info revealed by Wilde and what about the news that Hedlund will play the lead?

Tron 2 is to start shooting in April this year and set to be released in 2011.

It seems likely he will renew his role as the title character. With all this news of actors from the first film being in the sequel as well as the name it looks like they’re really aiming to make this film true to the original.

I’m glad of this; I was afraid they would package it for today’s audiences all the while practically forgetting about the first one.

What do you think of this news? Happy to see yet another cast member return for the sequel?

…a previously tested source had to say:

I think the masses would love this tidbit of info. Tron 2.0 is going to be shot ENTIRELY in 3-D. They are really excited about what they are going to be doing with the Tron world in 3-D.

With new technology, they can actually wear the glasses at the monitors as they shoot & it will show them exactly how the 3-D will look so that they can get exactly what they are looking for.

If there has ever been a world that 3-D would totally embrace, I think it would be the world of Tron. Specifically, we are going to get a first person view from inside of a light cycle in the film. That should be a lot of fun.

I think this is fantastic news, I can’t think of a movie on the horizon that would benefit more from the 3D technology available. Just imagine one of those Light Cycle battles coming out at you from the big screen; the mind boggles at what they could potentially do with this thing. As I have said before I think this is a film that lends itself extremely well to a sequel but this news of the 3D factor has really piqued my interest.

What do you make of this news? Is 3D a good or bad idea for Tron 2, Tr2n, TRZ or whatever they’re calling it this week?

We all know the sequel to Tron is on the verge of being made, with a Spring 2009 shoot being eyed. Sadly, though, the release isn’t until 2011 so we have over two years to mull over the inevitable slew of news and images that will get released between now and then. On the casting news side of things (after Jeff Bridges confirmed he will be in it) we have news that two actresses have signed on.

They are Olivia Wilde (who you may know from the TV show House) and Beau Garrett (who, at a stretch, you may recognize from her small role in Fantastic Four 2), who will both play characters within the virtual computer world. Both of them are relative newcomers with their biggest claim to fame (at least in the movie world) being that they both appeared in the terrible horror film from 2006 called Turistas.

The plot details of the this are being kept very hush-hush and one can only assume, since a detail was released revealing that it will be “the next chapter,” that it will involve Jeff Bridges’ character. Here’s the only plot synopsis we’ve seen so far:

“After being transported into the surreal landscape of a mainframe computer to destroy an intruder, a programmer finds himself allied with the leader of a rebellion against a corrupt cyber-entity.”

I think it’s a film ripe for a sequel, considering what they can do with visual effects nowadays and I actually think it could do pretty well. It’ll definitely get all of those folks’ money who remember the first one, who still cherish it from their younger years. Of course, that’s always the point of a sequel/remake, isn’t it?

Let’s just hope they keep the essence of it, the neon look in particular is absolutely essential.
