This week is void of any significant Blu-ray re-releases, but there are some great new releases hitting shelves. Comic book fans will get a special addition to their collection when Green Lantern releases on DVD and Blu-ray this Friday. In the meantime, a pair of comedies and a Terrence Malick drama also arrive on home video.

A few low-profile titles hit DVD and Blu-ray this week, some of which some of you will be interested in. A pair of summer movies, Indian Summer and Camp Nowhere hit Blu-ray in case you have a bit of nostalgia you’re willing to invest in. Also on shelves are uber-indies like Terri and Beautiful Boy.

The following titles can now be found on DVD and Blu-ray.

One of the most polarizing films of 2011 comes to DVD and Blu-ray this week – Terrence Malick’s spiritual work The Tree of Life. We had the pleasure of speaking with two of the film’s producers, Dede Gardner and Bill Pohlad. The pair shared stories of the production, the future of the rumored The Voyage of Time spin-off and other high-profile films they’ve got in the works.

I asked Gardner and Pohlad if we might see an Extended cut or Criterion Collection cut of Tree of Life soon, but they have no immediate plans to release one.
Screen Rant’s Ben Kendrick Reviews The Tree of Life

Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line and The New World) is one of the most celebrated, and reclusive, filmmakers working in the industry today. As Hollywood churns out superhero adaptation after superhero adaptation, even corralling directors such as Kenneth Branagh to helm the projects, it’s becoming increasingly rare to see a director who is both willing to take chances with a completely original script as well as disappear for years in order to allow his projects plenty of time to gestate. After forty years in the business, and only five feature films to his name, it’s safe to say Malick is an enigma.

Enigmatic also serves as a good way of describing Malick’s most recent film, The Tree of Life – starring Brad Pitt, ...

Click to continue reading ‘The Tree of Life’ Review

The summer movie season is upon us yet again, and despite the somewhat lackluster theater going experiences of the last few years (with some notable exceptions, of course) 2011 promises to kick off a bright and promising future for fans of the superhero and sci-fi genres in particular.

Flicks like Thor, X-Men: First Class, Green Lantern and Captain America will keep our weekends full of excitement as we try to determine of the winner of this summer’s Superhero showdown. However, even with that whirlwind competition going on, the summer’s greatest event may in fact be the culmination of a decade-long cinematic journey with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. If you haven’t seen the first trailer for that film yet… prepare to get goosebumps.
The buzz surrounding comic book superhero movies has never been greater as the summer of 2011 approaches. With four comic book movies releasing this summer and a large slate of other potential blockbusters, this slow year may explode with huge hits in the coming months.

To get you true fans pumped for another summer at the movies, we’ve put together a trailer mashup showcasing the best of what’s to come.

There are a few potential duds on the schedule this summer, but there are even more tentpoles from major studios; our mashup includes four superhero films and seven sequels. The major studio battle for summer supremacy seems to be between Paramount (Thor, Captain America) and Warner Bros. (Green Lantern, Harry Potter).

Hopefully this trailer gets you in the mood for ...

Click to continue reading The Ultimate 2011 Summer Movie Trailer

[Update: We've added a new Underworld 4 pic of Kate Beckinsale!]

Today marks the beginning of a new weekly feature we are introducing here at Screen Rant – the movie image roundup! We’ve done image posts in the past, but they often only focus on two or three films at a time and usually only some of the bigger and more recognizable upcoming movies.

We’re changing that formula up by taking all the stills, concept art and behind-the-scenes photos we don’t single out during the week and consolidating them into one massive image post every Monday. These posts will have images from a multitude of genres including comedy, animation, romance, action, horror, sci-fi and drama – ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

If you’ve been pining for the next Terrence Malick project, today is your lucky day. The director has spent the last five years developing his latest film, The Tree of Life. Based on the first trailer, it was well worth the wait.

Malick’s strong suit has always been his ability to tell a story visually. The Thin Red Line is a beautiful ode to life at war. Badlands and Days of Heaven are striking tales of Americana. The New World is a gloomy, historical poem. Each film has a visual aesthetic that wows many, but bores others. His movies are not for everybody, but The Tree of Life looks like it could be his best yet – and that’s just based on a trailer.

The trailer presents a vibe almost identical to The Thin ...

Click to continue reading Terrence Malick’s ‘Tree of Life’ Trailer is Breathtakingly Beautiful

TRON: Legacy

Disney is still in the midst of its marketing bonanza for this winter’s 3D tentpole pic, TRON: Legacy and released yet another one-sheet for the film this week – in addition to the recent international posters (though the Tron throwback poster remains our favorite).
Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D (read our review here) has managed to debut at the top of box office this weekend, giving the action/horror franchise its strongest start ever – although this was due to the increased ticket prices for this 3D shot installment. The Paul W.S. Anderson directed film grabbed an estimated $28 million from ...

Click to continue reading Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: September 12, 2010

The box office gets Wild; a Vampire Chronicles star moves to Cradlewood; Everything Must Go for Will Ferrell; Owen, Keener and Schwimmer Trust each other and Terrance Mallick’s Tree of Life withers in 2009.

Box Office

After a few years in post-production, Spike Jonze’s Where The Wild Things Are took the top spot with a mighty $32.4 million over the weekend. Catering to children and adults alike, it looks like this adaptation of the children’s book might make it to the century barrier.

Law Abiding Citizen came an impressive second with $21 million. The thriller has given a boost to the careers of Jamie Fox and Gerard Butler whose last movies underperformed.

Paranormal Activity scared up $20 million from only 760 screens for a $33 million total. It looks like the sky is the limit as Halloween approaches.
