Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone, The Hunger Games) jointly announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards this morning, on Tuesday January 24th. The actual 2012 Oscar ceremony will take place next month, on February 26th at the Kodak theater – with Billy Crystal serving as host, for the ninth time in his career.

In the aftermath of the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony, Hollywood “in-crowd” types like George Clooney and Meryl Streep are favored to take home the gold for acting, while multiple Globe-winning films such as The Artist and The Descendants are considered heavyweight contenders for the coveted Best Picture Oscar.

This week is void of any significant Blu-ray re-releases, but there are some great new releases hitting shelves. Comic book fans will get a special addition to their collection when Green Lantern releases on DVD and Blu-ray this Friday. In the meantime, a pair of comedies and a Terrence Malick drama also arrive on home video.

A few low-profile titles hit DVD and Blu-ray this week, some of which some of you will be interested in. A pair of summer movies, Indian Summer and Camp Nowhere hit Blu-ray in case you have a bit of nostalgia you’re willing to invest in. Also on shelves are uber-indies like Terri and Beautiful Boy.

One of the most polarizing films of 2011 comes to DVD and Blu-ray this week – Terrence Malick’s spiritual work The Tree of Life. We had the pleasure of speaking with two of the film’s producers, Dede Gardner and Bill Pohlad. The pair shared stories of the production, the future of the rumored The Voyage of Time spin-off and other high-profile films they’ve got in the works.

As Hollywood churns out superhero adaptation after superhero adaptation, even corralling directors such as Kenneth Branagh to helm the projects, it’s becoming increasingly rare to see a director who is both willing to take chances with a completely original script as well as disappear for years in order to allow his projects plenty of time to gestate. If you’ve been pining for the next Terrence Malick project, today is your lucky day. The director has spent the last five years developing his latest film, The Tree of Life. Based on the first trailer, it was well worth the wait.

Malick’s strong suit has always been his ability to tell a story visually. The Thin Red Line is a beautiful ode to life at war. Badlands and Days of Heaven are striking tales of Americana. The New World is a gloomy, historical poem. Each film has a visual aesthetic that wows many, but bores others. His movies are not for everybody, but The Tree of Life looks like it could be his best yet – and that’s just based on a trailer.
