‘Transformers 4′: A More Serious Sequel to ‘Dark of the Moon’ [Updated]

Paramount finally confirmed the inevitable this week, as the studio announced that both director Michael Bay and an official release date have been locked down for Transformers 4. The movie is already being trumped up as part reboot, in the sense that it will exist within the continuity established in Bay’s previous Transformers flicks, but is also going to “clean house” and remove certain characters (primarily, human players) who played prominent roles in the original TF trilogy.

New insider reports on the fourth Transformers movie also claim the film will be a “direct” sequel to the third installment (subtitled Dark of the Moon) – and that certain thematic elements from the previous movies will also be left out of the loop, this next time around.

Michael Bay Will Direct ‘Transformers 4′; Reboot of the Same Storyline

Earlier today we reported that Transformers 4 has been tentatively slated by Paramount and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura for a June 29th, 2014 release date.

In our original piece we confirmed the release window; however, as the day progressed, a few more enticing tidbits saw the light of day – including new basic details regarding how the fourth Transformers installment will tie-in with prior entries as well as confirmation that director Michael Bay will return to helm the blockbuster.

According to an official press release at Bay’s official website, MichaelBay.com, the director has signed-on for a two picture deal with Paramount that will bring both his passion project, Pain & Gain, as well as the fourth Transformers film to the big screen. ‘Transformers 4′ to be Released in 2014

Ever since Transformers: Dark of the Moon made a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, it’s been a no-brainer that Paramount would be returning to the well for Transformers 4. However, beyond the knowledge that Transformers 4 was coming, everything else has been rumor, including whether or not Michael Bay would be returning to the director’s chair, and/or who will be starring in the film if franchise staple Shia LaBeouf is out (which he claims he is).

While we’re still waiting to hear what Transformers 4 will entail, today we at least have a much more solid idea of when the fourth chapter may be coming. Read on for details.

Coming Soon has it that Paramount is looking at a 2014 release date for Transformers 4. This would presumably be a summer 2014 release ...

‘Star Trek 2′ Release Date; ‘Transformers 4′ & ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Update

Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman recently offered brief updates on the latest installments in three of Paramount Pictures’ cinematic cash cows – namely, the renovated Star Trek saga, the Transformers franchise, and the Paranormal Activity series.

Star Trek 2 is finally starting to make significant progress down the production pipeline, following a year’s worth of slow developments. Substantial work on both Transformers 4 and Paranormal Activity 4 has (reportedly) barely begun, but both are all-but-guaranteed to come to fruition eventually.

Dauman informed THR that previously-released reports about director/producer J.J. Abrams (at last) being committed to Star Trek 2 were indeed correct – and that the filmmaker is currently “focused on developing the next installment” in the 45-year-old science fiction franchise. ‘Transformers 4 & 5′ Shooting Back-to-Back? Jason Statham Starring?

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner’s very recent announcement that Transformers 4 was being actively developed came as a shock to… no one, essentially. The “fourquel” has been all but assured ever since the third installment, Dark of the Moon, grossed over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office this past summer.

However, reports are now in that Paramount and Hasbro officials are developing plans to shoot Transformers 4 and Transformers 5 simultaneously – and already have an actor in mind to replace Shia LaBeouf as the human star of the series.

Variety says that the fourth and fifth Transformers movies – which Dark of the Moon scriber Ehren Kruger is said to already have concocted a storyline for – could be filmed back-to-back, as a cost-cutting measure. The site also reports ...

It’s no secret that many Hasbro products are being fashioned as a new tentpole production – seeing how the list includes next year’s Battleship movie and the all-but-assured Transformers 4, among others. Hence why there’s good reason to listen to what CEO Brian Goldner has to say, in terms of updates on the company’s many cinematic projects.

Goldner has made it clear that Hasbro is not aiming to employ “the Marvel strategy” and start producing its own movies anytime soon. However, long-rumored film adaptations based on its products – like the Taylor Lautner-starring Stretch Armstrong and a Micronauts movie co-developed by J.J. Abrams – reportedly do feature the company’s head executives in a significant creative capacity.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon has invaded the box office – providing one of the coolest eye-candy experiences moviegoers will see all summer. Despite an overlong runtime and some plot-holes, both fans and critics (read our Transformers 3 review) have praised the movie for its exciting and over-the-top final act – which looks especially cool as an IMAX 3D experience.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon owned the July 4th holiday box office, proving yet again that even though critics aren’t fans of Michael Bay’s robot slugfests, there are plenty of moviegoers out there who still get a thrill from seeing that one-of-a-kind Bay-brand action.

Our own Transformers: Dark of the Moon review overlooked some the glaring weaknesses in the film’s plot, editing, and acting, in favor of the sheer enjoyment and awe that was inspired by the amazing 3D action sequences Bay managed to capture on camera.

Michael Bay’s most recent film – a little known independent project called Transformers: Dark of the Moon – had the biggest opening day box office all year (on a Tuesday, no less) and is well on its way to a massive opening weekend, too.

Now the question is: What’s next for Michael Bay? After six years of eating, breathing, and directing Transformers films, what’s to be the tenth entry in Bay’s burgeoning filmography? According to the man himself, it’s Pain & Gain, a dark comedy in the vein of Pulp Fiction that he originally planned to work on before returning for Transformers 3.

New TV Spots: ‘Green Lantern’, ‘Transformers 3′, ‘Conan the Barbarian’ [Updated]

With the exception of artsy efforts like Tree of Life, summer movie fare is generally all about the fast-paced action and dazzling (or disappointing) effects. Hence why the latest TV spots for Green Lantern, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Conan the Barbarian display all the glorious fight scenes and CGI spectacle they can in less than sixty seconds.

Green Lantern hits theaters this Friday, followed by Transformers 3 in two weeks time. Conan the Barbarian doesn’t arrive on the scene until August, but sometimes titles released during late summer can prove to be among the more memorable of the season (ex. Inglourious Basterds).

‘Conan the Barbarian’ & ‘Transformers 3′ TV Spots: Blood & Metal

“Smash” appears to be the key word, when it comes to battle tactics for the titular hero of Conan the Barbarian and the other-worldly giant robots in Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Then again, what else would you want (or expect) from summer popcorn fare about ancient world warriors and metallic extraterrestrials the size of buildings?

New TV spots have been released for both these film, which definitely aim to deliver all the bang you could want for your buck. They do beg the question, though: Is either film actually going to be “good”?

‘Transformers 3′: Most Incredible 3D Experience Since ‘Avatar’

Our own Roth Cornet covered the LA preview of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, in which fifteen minutes of 3D footage from the film was screened for select press. Today that footage made its way across to the Eastern shores of NYC, where I was finally able to get a look at Transformers 3 myself.
