Prince of Persia Moves To Summer 2010

Despite talking up a storm last week at the San Diego Comic Con, the video-game inspired Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has officially moved from its June 19, 2009 release.

Instead, the Mike Newell-helmed blockbuster tentpole will now open on May 28, 2010 for the Memorial Day weekend.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Updates

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Updates

Granted, I personally hated last summer’s blockbuster smash Transformers. Regardless, news is still news, and I must report…

For those worried about the forthcoming sequel Revenge of the Fallen being the latest in a line of blockbuster tentpoles filming sequels back-to-back, well director Michael Bay has heard your prayers.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly recently, Bay revealed:

“When we were writing the script, I said to the writers, “‘ hate sequels that try to make it to the third movie. Pretend like we’re never having a third movie, so let’s go for broke on the second one. I hate those cliffhangers! Let’s just make this movie stand on its own.’ I really feel this movie is not a forced sequel.”

Countdown To The SAG Strike… Or Not?

Countdown To The SAG Strike... Or Not?

Can the film and television industries handle another strike, this time from the actors unions: SAG (Screen Actors Guild) and AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists)? No way; after the three-month-plus Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike against the studios and producers, the entertainment industries still haven’t recovered.

One caveat; as a filmmaker, I have worked with SAG in the past, employing members for a few movie projects. I have never had a problem with the union, and they were always extremely helpful in securing SAG talent for my films.

Transformers 2: Megan Fox Gets Deep

Transformers 2: Megan Fox Gets Deep

MTV had a chance to talk to uber-hottie Megan Fox about Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. According to Ms Fox, the sequel will be “10 times as big, 10 times as many set pieces, explosions, and acrobatic stunts.”

She also said that she and lucky boy Shia LeBouf will get to make out a bit in the film, but according to her:

“I don’t know if anyone wants to see that.”

Uh… right.

Due to the writer’s strike, it seems the script for Transformers 2 was pounded out pretty quickly, so it’s going through some, like, rewrites, ya know? Writers are working on:

“trying to do some character stuff for Shia and myself”

Like I totally get that - I’m a big fan of character stuff even in big, gigantic popcorn movies that can trigger epileptic seizures in the audience.

Movie News Grab Bag

Hey gang… man, one of the downsides of being a computer geek is getting sucked into the back-end stuff when redesigning a website. I’ve been so busy trying to fine tune thing (thanks for the suggestions!) and trying to fix bugs that I haven’t been doing any movie news coverage.

So here’s my little attempt at a bit of catch up on what’s popped up over the last few days.

- There’s a new muppet movie coming and supposedly it will be faithful to what we’ve come to know and love about the little fellas. - Ain’t It Cool

- Transformers 2 has a title: Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. I can’t wait (yeah, that was sarcasm). - Superhero Hype

Transformers 2 Casting Update: Jonah Hill & Teresa Palmer

Transformers 2 Casting Update: Jonah Hill & Teresa Palmer

What a world!

[UPDATE: Looks like Jonah Hill won't be involved in Transformers 2 after all. Thank goodness for small miracles, I guess.]

First, he’s drawing pictures of penises as far as the eye can see. And now Jonah Hill (Superbad, Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall) is in “early negotiations” to play Shia LaBeouf’s sidekick in next summer’s Transformers 2.

Early reports indicate Hill will play LaBeouf’s college roomate - a crazed webmaster who runs a conspiracy theory site.

Transformers 2 Update

Transformers 2 Update

I’m really glad I held off on this, because a lot of new information has surfaced about Transformers 2, the sequel to last summer’s hit movie. Photos of three Mustangs that are Barricade in car form were spotted in L.A., followed by an eyewitness photo of Optimus Prime in truck mode.

Speculation was rampant that the start of production was imminent, though there wasn’t any further evidence pointing to that. Director Michael Bay said they couldn’t start shooting until at least May 2008, which got me to thinking about what actually may be going on.

Transformers 2 News

Apparently during the strike, Michael Bay wrote the general outline and much of the script for Transformers 2, so he could make the release date of June 26, 2009. He stressed he wanted to make the date, so he wrote what I’m guessing is the general story and action scenes of the script. He also said he writes much of his own movies. Other writers will be coming in to finish the sequel’s script.

Barring an actors strike (their contracts expire late June, 2008–don’t count on it happening, though), it looks like they’ll be able to start production soon. The visual effects look amazing, according to actor Shia LeBeouf and visual FX supervisor Scott Farrar. There will be more robots in the film, too. But no dinobots. “Me Grimlock not happy about decision!”

My thoughts: Bring it on! Transformers 2 was the best action movie last summer, along with Live Free Or Die Hard. The film had some issues, like the extended bit with the glasses/All Spark map, but I felt Shia really gave it life. I also thought the visual FX were the best in years, and made me feel that I’m not too jaded about CGI. I hope the movie wins an Oscar for FX; it’s already done well in other FX awards.
