The full theatrical trailer for the highly anticipated Toy Story 3 hit last week to (mostly) high praise of its loveable familiarity and beautiful animation (when is that ever NOT the case with Pixar?). Today we have some info on some fresh voices that have been added to the Toy Story 3 roster, as well as news that the current re-release of Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D is being expanded.

First up, the voice casting:

Toy Story 3 director, Lee Unkrich, let fans know via his Twitter account (a continually growing place to go for breaking entertainment news announcements – a la Screen Rant) and a video announcement that Flight of the Conchords comedienne, Kristen Schaal and Blake Clark (50 First Dates) will be joining Toy Story 3’s voice cast.

Although Unkrich was tight-lipped about which character Schaal will be voicing (I’m going to guessing some sort of quirky, perhaps slightly creepy plaything – a toy version of her character in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, maybe). However, the director did reveal that Clark will be replacing Jim Varney as the voice of Slinky as Varney sadly passed away shortly after Toy Story 2. I feel that Slinky is a necessary character (just one of the many sources of humor to be found in the Toy Story universe), so re-voice-casting is also necessary.

As mentioned, Schaal and Blake join an impressively huge (or hugely impressive) voice cast that includes Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Estelle Harris, John Morris, Laurie Metcalf, R. Lee Ermey, Jodi Benson, Ned Beatty, Michael Keaton, Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Bonnie Hunt and Whoopi Goldberg. Phew! Special thanks to FirstShowing.net for that list.

On the Toy Story 1 & 2 3D Double Feature front, Unkrich (also via that aforementioned video announcement) revealed that because of the success of the re-release, the double feature event will play for longer than the initially allocated two-week run, up until the end of October. That’s right, folks, if you happen to have been busy for the last two weeks and were thinking you’d missed your chance at seeing Pixar’s first two Toy Story adventures (the initial run was set to end this weekend), then you now have another two-plus weeks to get out and see it. C’mon – cherish these now classic animated movies on the big screen while you can!

What do you think of the additions to the Toy Story 3 voice cast? Did you get a chance to check out Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D? If not, are you glad they expanded the release so you can see them?

Toy Story 3 hits theaters on June 18th in the U.S., and on July 23rd in the UK, both in 2010.

With the amount of hoopla recently over the 3D double feature release of the first two Toy Story movies, you could be forgiven for forgetting that there’s a third one on the way. On that front, we’ve had a Toy Story 3 teaser that appeared back in May of this year, but now we finally get the full theatrical trailer for Toy Story 3, in all its beautifully animated glory!

Toy Story 3 picks up years after the second film, with Andy now grown up and about to move off to college. Obviously he’s too old for toys (something I think we can ALL identify with), and thus dumps his ‘ol friends Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Rex, Hamm, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog and all the rest of his childhood play-things in a day-care center. Obviously the toys aren’t going to be too happy about that, and they try to escape.

It’s a great premise for the third installment in, dare I say, the best animated series of all time (is that too bold a statement to make?). Without further ado, thanks to Trailer Addict, take a look at the first full theatrical trailer for the wonderful looking Toy Story 3:

Just one of the many great things to look forward to about Toy Story 3 is getting to see again these great animated characters that for a slew of kids and adults alike, have almost become like friends in a way. It’s funny seeing Andy now all grown up after being used to him as a fairly young boy – as I said, he’s a character we can all relate to in terms of being grown up and moving on with your life, having to leave your childhood toys behind (a bed covered in toys doesn’t exactly say “cool” when you’re in college…).

Up until recently, Toy Story was the only series of Pixar films that they felt the need to continue the story on for (that was, until Cars 2 was announced, which is supposed to hit theaters in Summer 2011). And thankfully, the wizards at the leading animation studio in the business know that they shouldn’t just make a sequel unless there’s truly a good reason for doing so (they’ve said in the past that they’re not against sequels per se, they just don’t want to make them unless there’s a good story to back it up). On that note, it looks like they’ve managed to sustain the charm, humor and cross-generational appeal that the first two had in spades.

I’m always excited for the next offering from Pixar, but for Toy Story 3 I’m EXTRA excited for it. Summer 2010 can’t get here fast enough!

What do you think of the first theatrical trailer for Toy Story 3? Do you think it looks like they’ve carried on the quality from the first two movies?

Toy Story 3 is set to hit theaters on June 18th in the U.S., and on July 23rd in the UK, both in 2010.

Box Office

I Can Do Bad All By Myself topped the box office with $25 million. While it’s not the best gross for a Tyler Perry opening it does show that he has an audience that shows up.

The Tim Burton-produced 9 had a better than expected debut with $15.5 million.

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds was third with another $6.5 million. With a total gross of $104 million the film has now become Tarantino’s highest grossing film – unadjusted of course.

Sandra Bullock’s All About Steve was fourth with $5.8 million. The film’s cumulative gross currently stands at $21 million.

Final Destination dropped about 55% this weekend – but with $58 million in the bank so far it looks like this franchise will continue.

Horror film Sorority Row did little business with just over $5.5 million for its debut.

Joel Silver’s Dark Castle release Whiteout starring Kate Beckinsale didn’t do well with a poor opening weekend gross of $5 million.

District 9 banked another $3,6 million. The $30 million film now has a total gross of $108 million.

Meryl Streep’s Julie & Julia managed another $3.3 million. The film has now grossed $85 million. It probably won’t hit $100 million, but it does ensure that Streep will make a few more summer comedies that are aimed at the older viewer.

Gerard Butler’s Gamer dropped a huge (but not unexpected) 65% with a weekend take of just over $3 million. With $16 million in the bank, this will need to find an audience on DVD.

Just outside the top ten was G.I Joe with a little over $2.5 million. The Stephen Sommers film now has $144 million.

Halloween 2 made just under $2.5 million. The slasher remake/sequel has a disappointing $30 million total. It was cheap so that’ll help matters but new blood is needed if they want the series to continue.

Movie News

1. Former James Bond star, Timothy Dalton, has signed on to voice a character in the forthcoming Toy Story 3. The Shakespearean actor will play Mr Pricklepants, a toy hedgehog with “thespian tendencies.”

It sounds like a suitable role for the star. It’s a shame that he hasn’t had better roles on the big screen.

Source: Empire

2. Star Trek and Terminator Salvation star Anton Yelchin has joined The Beaver.

Yelchin will play the son of Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster in the dramedy about a depressed man who wears a glove puppet of the titular on his hand.

Foster directs the film that also stars Jennifer Lawrence.

Summit Entertainment recently bought the distribution rights for the film that will open in late 2010 or 2011.

Source: Variety

3. English-born Max Ryan has joined the cast of Sex and the City 2.

The actor, who will play the boyfriend of Kim Catrall’s Samantha has also starred in last years Death Race and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon also return for the sequel which opens next summer.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

4. Former Bond girl Eva Green will star opposite Ewan McGregor in Last Word.

Screen Daily reports that:

“Last Word is a story about two people who fall in love as the world begins to fall apart.”

McGregor’s Trainspotting co-star Ewan Bremner also stars alongside Stephen Dillane and Connie Nielsen in the David MacKenzie directed film.

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

[Update: We have additional Toy Story 3 Info! See post for details.]

Pixar’s John Lasseter was recently on hand at the Disney Animation Showcase in London, where he showed some footage and spilled some beans about the plots of the upcoming Pixar sequels, Toy Story 3 and Cars 2.

I can tell you upfront that the story revealed for Toy Story 3 pretty much confirms early rumors, while the plot of Cars 2 will be less down-home Southern-fried yarn, and more James Bond.

Pixar fans, if you’ve been waiting to know what’s in store for the next installments of two of your favorite franchises, keep reading.

TOY STORY 3

According to the footage shown, the next Toy Story film will take us ahead to the future where the little boy Andy is now teenage Andy headed off to college, while our favorite toys are headed for a storage unit. When Andy can’t part with his childhood pal Woody (Tom Hanks), the limber little cowboy is forced to set out on a journey to save his fellow toys from the horrible dregs of…a daycare center. I suspect that to the toys, a room full of spastic toddlers will seem like The Spanish Inquisition. I’m already chuckling.

Lasseter also confirmed that former 007 Timothy Dalton will be joining the cast, playing a snooty hedgehog who goes by the (awesome) name of “Mr. Pricklepants.”

Update: Thanks to Slash Film and Twitter we now know the following additional details about Toy Story 3:

John Morris, the voice of the young Andy in Toy Story and Toy Story 2 is back for part 3. This time round, Andy is 18 years old. Morris is currently age 24.

Also joining the cast are Pixar vets Jeff Garlin (Wall-E) and Bonnie Hunt (A Bug’s Life, Cars, Monsters Inc.). Whoopi Goldberg will also be making her Pixar debut. Not sure who any of the actors will be voicing.

CARS 2

The sequel to the 2006 Pixar flick Cars will once again focus on sports car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), who has graduated to a global Race of Champions that is chock full of other speedsters from around the world. Joining McQueen on his journey will be pal Mater (Larry The Cable Guy), and according to Lasseter, Cars 2 will be a spy-thriller (?), which culminates with a Buckingham Palace throwdown. Rumors are that yet another former (or current?) 007 might be joining the Cars 2 cast.

I love Toy Story, and am eager to see the next installment (in 3D no less!). The plot already has me in goosebumps anticipating all the poignant life lessons about childhood-adulthood transitioning – the childish things we keep and those things we put away – which Pixar is sure to lace into the story. Also the day care scenes already sound like they’re chock full of comedic potential. Count me in.

Cars, on the other hand… never really was able to make it through the first film, and the plot of the sequel has me even less interested. Something about talking cars that look like cartoons never really did it for me. I mean it didn’t quite tickle my gear-head bone, and it didn’t quite tickle my cartoon funny bone, either.

But hey, I’m sure that’s not the case for everybody, so I’ll wait to hear what YOU think in the comments.

Cars 2 hits theaters on June 24, 2011. Toy Story 3 will hit theaters on June 18, 2010.

If you want to catch up on your Toy Story films, remember the first two films in the franchise are being shown in 3D for a limited engagement double-feature event starting October 2nd.

You’ve done it again, Disney (and Pixar). All the years that I’ve spent convincing myself that I am free of the tractor beam that is the Magic of Disney™, and once again, I’m off the wagon.

I had relinquished my love/addiction to Disney. Their magical touch had enchanted me too long with greats like Lion King, or Aladdin, and even The Little Mermaid (if you’re not singing “Part of Your World” in your head right now, you’re soulless). I even went so far as to become a theme part cast member…for six years (true story). But I broke the spell, I cast off the classic demons and villains created over so many years of animation and rid myself of the drug that is Disney Magic.

And then this happened: Toy Story 1&2 in 3D!

Now, I was around when the first Toy Story came out; I was around when the second was a smash; and I’ve even managed to approach the prospect of Toy Story 3 with a healthy cynicism (though some indication that the shell is cracking). But this just pushed me over the edge; just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.

Hello, my name is Jake, and I’m a Disney-aholic. I NEED ONE MORE HIT.

And one more hit they shall deliver. My biggest concern initially was that Disney was going to re-release these masterpieces (yes, masterpieces), embellished with silly, cheap 3D broomsticks in the eye, or shattering glass, or foreground add-ons. And… Disney has not disappointed. Based on this first trailer we’ll get Jessie’s hands in our face, Buzz’s jet-pack, and we even get to see Rex’s tail up close after he’s joins the third dimension.

Check it out:

.

by disneypixar

.

Even though this trailer promises all the hokey, mawkish tricks that can (and do) send so many 3D films spinning down the toilet, I am, nonetheless, hooked.

Not only can’t I wait to to revisit with my old friends Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the gang – I can’t wait to shriek in pre-adolescent glee as various objects, characters, and body parts come flying off the screen at me. And I will duck, dodge, and dive; I will do everything in my power to avoid an errant rocket-propelled Buzz Lightyear, or a misdirected Lego, or whatever else is thrown my way. What’s more, I will shutter in delight as I get to watch the hijinks of Buzz and Woody again, and I will giggle at even the most childish of jokes.

Because I’m an addict, and when Buzz tells me that I can see into the third dimension, you better believe I’ll be rocking those specs to school the next day. Not to mention, I could watch that little desk lamp hop around to infinity and beyond.

If you or someone you know is addicted to Disney, call 777-FILM for show times and locations, operators are standing by.

Seriously though, the Toy Story 3D Double Feature will be in theaters for two weeks starting October 2nd. Check with your local theater for show times.

Box Office

Jerry Bruickheimer’s G-Force shot into the number one position this week with a weekend take of $32 million. The Disney family film looks set to hit the $100 million mark giving Bruickheimer another century hit.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince had to settle for second place over the weekend. Down 60% from last weekend, the wonderful wizard flick brought in another $30 million, giving the Warner Bros pic a magical gross of almost $222 million. Factor in the $405 million that the film has made elsewhere around the world, the latest Potter epic has conjured up an astonishing $627 million in just over two weeks! It looks like Harry Potter will grab the 2009 box office crown from Transformers 2.

The Katherine Heigl/ Gerard Butler romantic comedy The Ugly Truth also had an impressive opening of $27 million.

The Joel Silver produced horror film Orphan scared-up an average $12 million over the weekend. The budget should be low and DVD rentals and sales will be high, so anyone with profit participation should be happy in the end.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs melted over 50%, with a gross of $8 million. With $171 million in the bank this looks to be a strong franchise for Fox.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen banked another $8 million, giving the Megan Fox/ Shia LaBeouf starrer a huge total gross of $379 million. A final gross of $400 million is pretty much guaranteed. Ker-ching!

The Hangover keeps hanging around. The R-rated comedy laughed up another $6.5 million, giving the film a massive $247 total gross.

Sandra Bullock’s The Proposal also laughed up another $6.4 million. The film has so far grossed an impressive $140 million.

Michael Mann’s Public Enemies shot up another $4 million. With $88 million robbed from cinema-goers so far it looks like this will need all of Johnny Depp’s charm to hit $100 million.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Bruno squeezed out just under $3 million, bringing its total to $56 million. A final gross of just over $60 million should be something of a disappointment for all involved, but not unexpected.

Movie News

1. Mila Kunis is set to star opposite Natalie Portman in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.

The supernatural drama will follow Portman’s Ballerina whose rival may or may not be a figment of her imagination. Kunis will star as the rival Lilly.

Kunis has quite a few films on the way; the Mike Judge directed Extract with Ben Affleck and the Denzel Washington starring The Book of Eli.

Black Swan starts shooting this fall.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

2. It has been known for quite a while, but now someone has confirmed it – Michael Keaton will voice Ken in Toy Story 3. Director Lee Unkrich announced the news at Comic Con.

Now somebody get the man a really good live action role. Please.

Source: Coming Soon

3. ComingSoon.net announced in an “exclusive” that Kurt Russell would be joining the cast of the Red Dawn remake, however the story has since vanished from the site.

Could the Big Trouble In Little China star be joining the Dan Bradley directed action flick?

At this point it could swing either way. Maybe the deal wasn’t closed and someone was worried that Russell might not follow through, or maybe it was total BS and Comingsoon dropped the story to save face.

Whatever the case once we know – you’ll know.

Source: Coming Soon

4. David Cronenberg will direct an adaptation of Don DeDillo’s Cosmopolis. The film follows a 28 year-old billionaire who crosses New York for a haircut. I’m pretty sure there’s more to the plot than that, but you never know. The film will shoot in 2010, and no cast has signed…yet.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

5. According to the all knowing Nikki Finke Josh Brolin has been offered a role in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street 2. Javier Bardem was originally in the frame to play the “villain” role in the film, but it looks like Stone will be re-teaming with his W star.

It looks like 2010 might be another big year for Brolin as he also has Jonah Hex on the way.

Michael Douglas and Shia LaBoeuf will also star in the film that currently has the title Money Never Sleeps.

Source: Deadline Hollywood

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

Come October 2nd, Disney/Pixar has scheduled a short-run release of the Toy Story films as a double feature. For two weeks only (and then surely on Blu-Ray as a quintuple disk package with life-sized plush toys included) the films will play in theaters to teams of screaming ten-year-olds, and those who were ten when the originals were released but are now… Twenty-five… Whoa.

As stated, the Toy Story 3D double feature is set for release in the U.S. on October 2nd. However, the films will premiere September 2-23, 2009, at the 66th Venice Film Festival, according to Variety.

This may look like another attempt at global domination by Disney, but in actuality, the films’ release appear to be merely harbingers of things to come; a move to drum up some chatter about the upcoming release of the third installment in the Toy Story series, the aptly and creatively named Toy Story 3. Scheduled to debut in the summer of 2010, the third installment will be directed by Lee Unkrich, who has worked on the previous two films first as an editor, then as a co-director – Toy Story 3 will also retain the voice talents of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as leads Woody and Buzz Lightyear, respectively.

Its difficult to justify paying what could be over $25 a ticket for films that you can purchase used and still simulate the 3D experience by sitting too close to your TV. But with Pixar behind the wheel, it’s safe to say this re-release will probably have a few tricks up its sleeve that will prove to make this four-and-a-half-hour moviegoing experience worth it. However, at this point, little is known about any special features of the event.

It does seem kinda silly to go see a movie that’s only 15-years-old for a few gimicky additions like 3D broomsticks in the eye, or toys flying offscreen into the theater. But between you and me: I’m actually the guy already standing in line, waiting for opening night tickets. See you there.

Transformers 2: Revenge of The Fallen and Ice Age 3-D: Dawn of the Dinosaurs fought it out over the weekend to see who would get the top spot. The fight was so close that it’ll take final numbers on Monday to see who the box office champion is. Both films should bank about $43 million over the July 4th weekend. Tranformers 2’s total currently stands at just under $300 million. Public Enemies should bank about $25 million from Friday to Monday giving the Johnny Depp starrer a pretty decent $40 million over five days. The Michael Mann film appears to have been pretty good counter programming for those not wanting to see animated creatures, computer generated robots or Megan Fox.

Sandra Bullock’s The Proposal banked a little less than $14 million bringing the total of the comedy to $86 million. The magic century mark is within spitting distance.

The Hangover is hanging in there with a gross of $4.5 million. The R-rated comedy now has a spectacular total of $198 million.

The Cameron Diaz starring My Sisters Keeper took about $6 million giving the film a total of $23 million. The Taking Of Pelham 123 has so far taken $56.9 million – look for it to stop at the $60 million mar.. Year One banked just over $2 million for a flaccid $37 million total while Night at the Museum 2: Battle Of The Smithsonian took home just under $2 million to bring its grand total to $166 million.

Movie News

1. Now that the marketing machine has started up for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender all eyes have turned to the potential sequels to the film.

The producer of the film, Frank Marshall has discussed the possible time frame of the sequel and Shaymalan’s involvement. Marshall said:

“One of the things we’ll be doing is using the sets, ships and elements for each different nation in this film and incorporating them into movies two and three. We’re not waiting. There just isn’t enough time. Night will finish this movie, then the script and then we’ll prepare for the next one. I think it’ll probably happen over six years.”

I’ve been a fan of Shayamalan’s work for the last decade or so, and while I will admit that his films have been declining since he made his mark with The Sixth Sense I’ve always been willing to defend his choices. However, I can’t say that I’m looking forward to The Last Airbender. I’m not a fan of animation and the film looks terrible.

I know that there’s a lot of people out there looking forward to this – but I’m not one of them.

Source: SlashFilm

2. Amy Adams will join Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg in David O. Russell’s The Fighter.

“(The long in-development film) revolves around the life of boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and trainer-brother Dick Eklund (Bale), chronicling their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Mass., through Eklund’s battle with drugs and Ward’s eventual world championship in London.”

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Bale will be intense, Wahlberg will be wooden and Adams will be a love interest.

Over the years Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Darren Aronofsky have been attached to the troubled film that is set to start shooting soon.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

3. George Clooney is ending his longstanding relationship with Warner Bros. The star along with his producing partner Grant Heslov will move their Smokehouse production company off the Warner lot to Sony Pictures.

Warner Bros has been behind most of Clooney’s big hits over the years from his star-making stint in ER through to The Perfect Storm and The Ocean’s trilogy.

Read the press release below to see what Sony head Amy Pascal and Clooney have to say, as well as a list of the films that Smokehouse is currently developing:

“George Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures are in final negotiations to sign an exclusive two-year theatrical development and production deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment, it was announced today by Amy Pascal, Co-Chairman of Sony Picture Entertainment and Chairman of the studio’s Motion Picture Group.”

“Commenting on the announcement, Clooney said, ‘Warner Bros. has been a great place to work and I’ve felt like part of a family for almost 20 years. So in moving on, I’m leaving a terrific company and a lot of dear friends. They’re a class act. In looking ahead, I’m tremendously excited to be working at Sony Pictures, and we all feel like it’s a perfect match for Smokehouse. Grant Heslov and I hope to deliver the kind of films that will make them proud.’”

“We admire and respect George and Grant as filmmakers and producers and we couldn’t be more excited to be in business with them and their talented team at Smokehouse Pictures,” said Pascal. “The broad range of quality projects they have championed and the compelling and sometimes provocative material they support says everything about their company and their creative aspirations. While we have been trimming production deals overall for the last few years, we see real value in opening our doors to producers with their critical and commercial track record and their artistic point of view, and we know they will be a fantastic addition to the Sony Pictures family.”

“My nine year relationship with Warner Bros. was extremely gratifying and now, George and I look forward to Smokehouse being a part of the Sony family,” Heslov said.

The Smokehouse Pictures team includes Senior Vice President of Development Nina Wolarsky, and creative executive Alex Meenehan. The company is currently in development on the following projects with Warner Bros:

THE CHALLENGE
Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin. An adaptation of Jonathan Mahler’s nonfiction book chronicling the historic Supreme Court case in which two lawyers sued the Bush administration on behalf of accused terrorist Salim Hamdan.

OUR BRAND IS CRISIS
A satirical comedy about American spin doctors competing in the same Presidential election in Bolivia. Based on the documentary by Rachel Boynton, with a script by Peter Straughan (MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS).
FARRAGUT NORTH
An adaptation of Beau Willimon’s critically acclaimed play, set during the Iowa primary of a presidential race.

ESCAPE FROM TEHRAN
The true story of how the CIA used a fake movie project to smuggle hostages out of 1979 Tehran. Chris Terrio is writing the screenplay.

THE TOURIST
A contemporary spy thriller about a spy who risks everything to reveal a conspiracy after he’s accused of a murder he didn’t commit. Based on the bestselling book by Olen Steinhauer. Tony Peckham is writing the screenplay.

THE INNOCENT MAN
Based on the bestselling nonfiction book by John Grisham, the true story of murder and injustice in a small town in Oklahoma. Adapted by David Gordon Green..”

The irony of this story being that just days before this deal was sealed Pascal ditched Clooney’s Ocean movie pals Steven Soderbergh and Brad Pitt’s Moneyball due to script issues.

Source: Deadline Hollywood

4. Those of you who have been waiting to see Seth Rogan as The Green Hornet better prepare to wait a little bit longer.

The comic book adaptation’s release date has now been changed from June 25, 2010 to July 9, 2010 release. It’s only two weeks so don’t worry too much.

The Michel Gondry directed Green Hornet will now be sandwiched between Toy Story 3 and Twilight: New Moon.

Source: Film School Rejects

5. It looks like Tony Scott’s runaway train film Unstoppable might be…er stoppable after all.

The film was set to star Scott’s go-to-guy Denzel Washington and Star Trek’s Chris Pine, however 20th Century Fox have hot the brakes of the film because of budget concerns.

Unstoppable was set to go before cameras this fall but that start date now looks uncertain. One of the reasons for the studios cold feet is the so-so performance of the latest Scott and Washington action film The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 which has so far grossed $56 million from an estimated $100 million budget.

Washington currently gets $20 million a film while Pine is probably asking for a couple of million following the success of Star Trek.

More when we get it.

Source: The Hollywood Reporter

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

While this year’s major Disney Pixar film, Up, opens today in theaters, we have a little something to get you looking forward to the 3-D animated feature we’ll be treated to next year by the same studio.

That’s right, you guessed it… Toy Story 3! The movie everyone has been waiting on for a very long time brings back all our favorites including Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Rex, Mr. Potato Head, Slinky Dog and even our little green plastic soldiers among the many others and some new faces. The movie will finally be returning to the silver screen and we have a little teaser video of the characters telling you this themselves.

The trailer shows nothing of the story, new environments or any of the new characters of the movie, yet it still serves me well. Brand name alone would sell me in this case, but having the movie and its release date presented to us with all the key familiar characters of old (with the amazing voice cast participating of course!) helps remind me of the happy times we all had watching the first two. It’s a perfect tease that I’m sure will get many a little excited to see more leading up to its opening next summer.

Toy Story 1 & 2 are perfect films for all audiences: smart, funny and amazingly entertaining. Both films sit at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (yes, that’s a perfect fresh rating… for both) and I’ll certainly be there opening weekend to see the third installment.

What do you think of the teaser and are you excited to see another Toy Story after more than ten years?

Toy Story 3 is set to finally arrive June 18, 2010.

 Box Office

Tom Hanks charged to the top of the box office with Angels and Demons. The sequel to The DaVinci Code grossed $48 million over the weekend, which is down from the $77 million opening for the first film. Having said that, reviews are better and the audience is more mature so it might have legs to make it profitable. Expect a third movie – but might they replace Hanks with someone younger and cheaper next time?

Star Trek showed great legs with a second weekend take of $42 million and a drop of less than 45% from its opening weekend. With a total gross of $147 million it looks like this installment of the long running science fiction franchise really does have phasers set for stun!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine clawed in another $15 million for a grand total of $151 million.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past pulled in another $4 million for a total of $40 million. Expect it to hit the $50 million mark.

Obsessed has now banked $62 million so expect to see Beyonce Knowles in more romantic comedies. 17 Again is also teetering around the $60 million mark while Monster Vs Aliens is closing in on $200 million.

Movie News

1. It looks like Terry Gilliam’s The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is looking like it’s going to finally hit the big screen. Although having said that I wouldn’t get too excited until I’ve bought my ticket.

Gilliam and Tony Grisoni (a very nice man) have rewritten the script where a filmmaker ends up in Don Quixote’s world.

Gilliam said:

“I’m not so much a filmmaker as someone who gets possessed by an idea and it doesn’t leave me until I make the film. I commit myself to it so fully.”

Johnny Depp was set to star in the original incarnation of the film and Gilliam is in talks with the star to return to the project, but Depp’s a busy man these days and he might not be able to fit it into his schedule.

Time will tell.

Source: Variety

2. X-Men 2 star Allan Cumming is in negotiations to star in Julie Taymor’s $40 million Broadway musical production of Spider-Man.

Cumming would play the Green Goblin in the play which will have music by U2.

Anybody else think that this is a crazy idea?

3. The official website to Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds has been launched. Excited? Don’t be – there’s just a trailer there and some facebook and twitter links.

Expect more as we get closer to the August 21st release date.

4. If you’ve been waiting 10 years for Toy Story 3 then wait no more. Well…you’ve got to wait a bit more. The trailer for the long awaited animated film will be attached to Pixar’s forthcoming UP.

Toy Story 3 will open on June 18th, 2010.

5. With Slumdog Millionaire raking in Oscars and grossing millions it’s no surprise to learn that the author of the book on which the film was based – Vikas Swarup has become a hot commodity. The author’s next novel Six Suspects is being developed by BBC Films. The book which is billed as “Agatha Christie meets Elmore Leonard” is being adapted by John Hodge, who also wrote Slumdog director Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave and Trainspotting.

The film is due to shoot in Delhi next year.

6. Speaking of Trainspotting – it looks like Ewan McGregor won’t be slipping back into Renton’s tight jeans in a Trainspotting sequel.

Speaking to Moviefone McGregor said:

“I don’t think I would, for several reasons. The first one is that I didn’t think the book was very good. The novel of ‘Trainspotting’ was quite fantastic, it was beautiful, quite moving and disturbing writing, and then I find that the sequel … the book that Irvine Welsh wrote was called ‘Porno,’ and … it didn’t move me as much … He’d written a good sequel to the film as opposed to a sequel to his book. It’s also a similar story, you know, the betrayal of trust … Renton walks away with all the money at the end again. And I thought I don’t want to make the same story again. And, also, I think just the idea of getting the cast together again 10 to 15 years later isn’t good enough, you need more than that.”

Fair point – I think the fact that Boyle and McGregor had a huge falling out over Leonardo DiCapario being cast in The Beach might have something to do with it.

You might be angry Ewan – but he did do you a favor on that one.

Source: Moviefone

That’s it for now. See you at the movies.

The first one is my personal favorite, but on a purely technical animation level, the second is superior. It’s really the only Pixar story that warranted a sequel, simply because the characters are so great – likable, funny, charming, iconic and re-watchable. Seeing them in more films can only be a good thing.

Rumors went around for a while about a possible Toy Story 3 until it was officially announced, and with a little bit over a year away from its release date, it seems like things are moving pretty fast.

In a recent interview with Empire, Tom Hanks gave an update on the status of Toy Story 3 – specifically on his involvement so far. Here’s what he had to say:

“I have been in and done three big complete recording sessions and will probably have at least one more to do, possibly in about eight months. Then eight months after that I’ll do a mop-up and have three more sessions after that. Those movies are beasts.”

Hanks went on to give some pretty surprising and pretty neat info on what he (as well as Tim Allen and John Ratzenberger) has seen of the film’s development so far – it’s more than you might think… way more:

“They did an interesting thing on this one. They did not send us a script. They showed us a complete story reel of the entire movie, with storyboards moving from one to the next, and the people up at Pixar recorded some voices with some music and sound effects. Tim Allen and John Ratzenberger and I went in a movie theater, watched the reel and said, ‘This is great, let’s get to work!’”

Wow.

I’ve never heard of storyboards being presented as film in itself: CGI animatics combined with visual effects, music and dialog. They didn’t see a script but rather got to sit down and watch the entire movie in animated storyboard format?

Oh those lucky, lucky Hollywood people!

So clearly the folks at Pixar have a firm grasp on what they want to do with Toy Story 3 (as I believe they do with every film). The guys over there are the absolute best at what they do, and for that to be possible and remain the case, they have to be on the ball before the rest of us even know there is a ball. For example, I believe when Ratatouille was still in development, they had already started working on WALL-E… that’s how prepared they are as a studio.

The first two Toy Story movies are a couple of the most well received (both critically and by movie goers) animated movies ever made. They both hold 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes – and adding to that the fact that combined they have made almost $850 million worldwide made another movie being added to the series almost inevitable.

This was the concept that introduced us all to the wonders of Pixar’s animation, and I have no doubt the third film will just be another piece of animation excellence to add to the list.

What are your thoughts on them making a third movie? Should they leave well enough alone or add to the adventures of Woody and Buzz?

Toy Story 3 is currently scheduled for a June 18th, 2010 release.

For those not in the know, ShoWest is a convention for theater owners where studios pimp out their movies with the hopes of making a mark regarding their up and coming films. Yesterday, at ShoWest in Las Vegas studios decided to give one another a run for their money. Warner Bros. president Alan Horn showed clips of Terminator Salvation and the new Harry Potter. Both were things we’ve seen before and nothing particularly special.

Horn then introduced the trailer for the comedy The Hangover, which the audience seemed to really enjoy as they broke into laughter, and the action-comedy Sherlock Holmes. Robert Downey Jr. was there for the unveiling of the film’s trailer. He joked with the crowd and explained that he chose to do this film after the mega success of Iron Man. The trailer itself is said to be classic Guy Ritchie with a mix of action and comedy tied together with a certain supernatural element.

At the Disney panel, they announced that the new Tron film will be in 3D, as well as, asserting that the film will be called just “Tron.” In addition to that they showed the trailer that was originally brought to the public back at Comic-Con. They also dropped the news that Toy Story 1 & 2 will be rereleased in October for a limited engagement in 3D, as well as Beauty and the Beast, but it’s release date will be in February of 2010.

In total, Disney/Pixar have 17 theatrical 3D films planned for release between 2009 and 2012. Included on this list is Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, which will also be released on IMAX 3-D. They did not show a trailer for Alice In Wonderland, but showed stills from the film including the already seen photo of Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and new shots of the Cheshire Cat and it’s smile oddly reminiscent of the Joker. Finally, we got a glimpse of the Queen of Hearts’ Castle, which happens to resemble the Disneyland Castle. Way to highlight the Disney iconic logo. However, the middle part of the castle is appropriately shaped in a giant heart.

Up was also shown again, as it has been at every major movie event for the past few months. At this point I have seen the first 45 minutes of Up more times than I have seen most of my favorite films. Still the film does not miss the mark. It continues to shine in a way that makes the story and characters both believable and relatable.

All in all, the footage shown at ShoWest has been pretty impressive. Perhaps that has something to do with the 3D wow factor or the fact that most of the movies being marketed there are already highly anticipated films with mega blockbuster potential.

What do you think? Which films are you excited to finally be hearing more about?

Well, this is a relief.

Pixar sure looks like they know how to do things the right way. Earlier this year, it was announced that the super-successful animation studio would be re-releasing the first two Toy Story films leading up to the opening of their new Toy Story 3. Better yet, all three would be released in 3D.

Now comes confirmation that the first two installments will be left unchanged (other than the 3D formatting of course). This means we’re at no risk of suffering again through what George Lucas did to the original Star Wars trilogy for the special edition re-releases.

Toy Story 1 & 2 were both perfect films for all audiences and both sit with 100% fresh ratings on RottenTomatoes.com. It would suck to not be treated to what made the films so good in the first place, so it’s a wise decision on Pixar’s part to leave these works of art unscathed.

That being said, if they were to make edits and additions to the films, I’m sure it wouldn’t be nearly as problematic as what Mr. Lucas did with the Star Wars Saga.

Pixar has an insanely-good track record with their films and has plenty to live up to with Toy Story 3. Toy Story 2 came out back in 1999 so here’s hoping the 11-year wait being worth it.

Toy Story in 3D is due out October 2, 2009, Toy Story 2 in 3D is due out February 12, 2010 and the newest installment: Toy Story 3 (also in 3D) is due out June 18, 2010.

I can’t believe that it’s now the end of August! Soon the winter blockbusters will be knocking at our door and the next thing you know it’ll be Oscar time again. Where does time go? Is it playing like a re-run somewhere, can you just flick to another dimension to a time where you are still awaiting a fourth Indiana Jones movie? Who knows, but I do know that it’s another Weekend Movie News Wrap up featuring a new aspect: a weekend box office update.

This week:

After our box office round-up we see what George Clooney and Jason Reitman are doing Up in the Air, we find out what former superhero is joining the Toy Story franchise, we look at who might be helming the Poltergeist movie and the Voltron film and what is new on the Inglorious Bastards casting front.

Weekend Box Office

It looks like Tropic Thunder will retain its box office crown and gross another $14-16 million over the Labor day weekend. Fox’s tinkering with Babylon A.D. didn’t do any good as the film will only bank $11-13 million this weekend. Ouch – what a summer Fox has had!

Don Cheadle’s Traitor did a modest $2.2 million on Friday and it should bank $10 million when all is said and done over the weekend. Meanwhile Disaster Movie was a disaster coining only $2 million on Friday – look for an $8 million weekend.

Death Race crashed an burned on its second weekend dropping a mighty 63% grossing just $1.7 million on Friday. Look for a little over $8 million by the end of Labor Day weekend.

Art house hit The Dark Knight will have crossed the $500 million barrier and the Caped Crusader epic should bank about another $11.5 million. Holy legs, Batman!

Movie News

1. Speaking of Batman, former Dark Knight George Clooney has signed on to Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air. The comedy film follows a business man who is addicted to collecting air miles. Sounds strange and quirky so it should be up Clooney’s street. I imagine it’ll fly high in awards season!

Source: Variety

2. Another former Batman, Michael Keaton has signed on to Toy Story 3. Keaton will play Ken (of Ken and Barbie fame). His other half will be voiced by Jodi Benson. Benson was also the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid. I didn’t know that already. Seriously.

Source: IESB

3. It looks like the Poltergeist remake has snagged itself a director. Vadim Perelman director of House of Sand and Fog is in talks to direct the horror film. Nothing is set in stone yet, so this could change. Heck, they could even give Brett Ratner a call.

Source: Bloody Disgusting

4. More Bastards have landed (that’s a Peter Jackson reference for you). Christoph Waltz has joined Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards as the main evil-doer of the film, Colonel Hans Landa. Meanwhile National Treasure star Diane Kruger has also come on-board the film, in the role first intended for the much older Nastassja Kinski.

5. The Voltron movie has nabbed a director in the form of Max Makowski. The film is a Transformers-esque giant robot movie. Makowski has in the past brought us One Last Dance (a film that I have sitting on DVD but have never watched), as well as episodes of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

No, seriously, he did. I have nothing to say about this. Nothing at all.

I will say that there’s probably a joke in there somewhere.

Source: Latino Review

That’s it for another week. See you at the movies!
