The 'Total Recall' Japanese trailer focuses on the futuristic sci-fi world in which this story of identity and espionage takes place.

Total Recall continues to be a mixed bag, as far as the general public is concerned. Some people are impressed with the action-packed futuristic world that Die Hard 4 director Len Wiseman has created; while others are still pining for the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger action film.

Today we have the Japanese trailer for Total Recall to share, which plays up more of the sci-fi futuristic angle, and less of the eye candy provided by leading ladies Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale.

Despite all the back and forth regarding whether or not this new Total Recall deserves to exist, in the end, the greatest disappointment may be in how unremarkable it ...

Click to continue reading ‘Total Recall’ Japanese Trailer Explores a Futuristic Sci-Fi World

By now, the world at large has had a chance to take in the trailer for Total Recall, a re-interpretation of the famous Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” that’s also being billed as a partial remake of the 1990 film by Robocop director Paul Verhoeven, famously starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone.

Reaction to Total Recall (2012) has been mixed; some fans like the aesthetic of the sci-fi world director Len Wiseman (Underworld, Die Hard 4) has created, while others are still bemoaning the prospect of Hollywood recycling yet another beloved property.
Colin Farrell discovers the truth about his identity and must evade shady government forces in the teaser trailer for Len Wiseman's updated take on the sci-fi thriller 'Total Recall'.

This summer’s Total Recall marks Len Wiseman’s first time in the director’s chair on a feature-length production since 2007′s Live Free or Die Hard. Actress Kate Beckinsale’s husband has been keeping busy since then by helming the pilot for the rebooted Hawaii Five-0 TV series and co-writing the last two entries in the Underworld franchise, including this past January’s Awakening.

Wiseman and Beckinsale are back and working together again (professionally) on this summer’s Total Recall, which is part remake of director Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle and part re-interpretation of the Philip K. Dick short story that inspired the latter. As promised with last week’s trailer preview, today we can offer a full teaser trailer for Wiseman’s film.

[UPDATE: We've added more posters and Images for Total Recall and The Avengers!]

We’ve collected up a small batch of promotional materials for three upcoming fantasy and/or sci-fi titles, including the red-hot-anticipated comic book flick The Avengers, Columbia Pictures’ updated take on Total Recall – and Warner Bros.’ latest fantasy novel-turned-movie adaptation, The Seventh Son.

On the Avengers front, we have yet another international poster for Marvel’s superhero juggernaut – which has literally been several years and movies in the making. Similarly, the first banner for Total Recall is now online, along with some high-resolution conceptual artwork for Seventh Son (which just barely began shooting this month).

The Avengers

[UPDATE: Check out the full Total Recall teaser trailer.]

Following the release of a leaked Comic-Con sizzle reel “disguised” as a TV promo, we now have the first officially-sanctioned footage from the upcoming Total Recall: a project that is being billed as more a re-interpretation of Philip K. Dick’s original short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” – rather than a pure remake of RoboCop director Paul Verhoeven’s original adaptation (also titled Total Recall).

Unfortunately, that footage is all-too-brief and comes in the form of a teaser trailer… uh, teaser. Similar to the recent preview clips “announcing” the release of new trailers for such upcoming tentpole productions as Prometheus and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, this Total Recall promo only hints at greater things to come.

[UPDATE: SONY HAS PULLED THE TV SPOT.]

We were moderately excited about Len Wiseman’s Total Recall reboot/remake for most of last year, thanks in part to the casting of fan-favorites like Bill Nighy (Underworld) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) in pivotal supporting roles – along with the promise that the film will adhere more closely to the tone and themes of Philip K. Dick’s source material (the short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”) than director Paul Verhoeven’s enjoyable, yet undeniably cheesy, 1990 adaptation did.

Our expectations rose all the higher after seeing some early footage screened at the film’s New York Comic-Con 2011 panel, which hinted at a Total Recall movie that could indeed deliver a healthy helping of brains to go along with the (nowadays) requisite darker/grittier action and ...

Click to continue reading ‘Total Recall’ TV Spot Teases A Stylishly Updated Sci-Fi Flick [UPDATED]

Screen Rant talks to David Hughes, the author of 'Tales from Development Hell,' about his fascinating book and the many absurd trials and tribulations that filmmakers face in getting their movies made.

Very few people realize just how hard it is to get a movie made. Some movies will start fast, only to fizzle out just before production because of a disgruntled star. Others will be stuck in pre-production for decades, getting passed from one executive to another in an endless game of hot potato. In Hollywood, it’s called getting stuck in “Development Hell.” It’s a place that film journalist and screenwriter David Hughes knows all too well.

The cover of David Hughes’ book Tales From Development Hell teases the reader with a number of tantalizing “What Ifs?”: What if Frank Miller and Darren Aronofsky‘s ‘Batman: Year One’movie hadn’t been derailed? What if John Boorman brought his medieval sensibilities to ‘Lord of the Rings’ years before he directed ‘Excalibur’? The stories in the book are equal parts fascinating and frustrating.

The year 2012 is a pivotal one – and not just because of that whole ‘world coming to an end’ business.

Sure, in one sense the movies of 2012 will be a smattering of the usual varieties, in the usual genres, encompassing the usual range of quality. However, within that spectrum of cinematic potential, there are some definite matters of interest amongst hardcore movie geeks that will be addressed or proven within the next calendar year.

We’d like to offer 5 questions we think movie geeks should be keeping in mind as they view their most anticipated films and watch the debates unfold – all while the box office profits get tallied, and the future of the movie biz is once again charted.

One entry on our Most Anticipated Movies of 2012 list that seems to surprise a number of people is Total Recall: a film that’s part reboot of the popular 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action romp, part re-interpretation of the original Philip K. Dick short story, “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale”.

For more insight on why the film (arguably) has the potential to be something more memorable than yet another Hollywood remake that pales in comparison to the original, you need look no further than the newly-released official synopsis – and word from costar Kate Beckinsale (click here for our Kate Beckinsale photo gallery), about her “altered” role in the film.

2011 had its share of disappointing movies, but among the good we had our favorites and it’s not dampening our spirits as we look forward to 2012 - where again, there are more major films releasing than there are weeks in the year.

From comic book, sci-fi and fantasy epics, to prequels, sequels and reboots, many of film’s iconic characters and actors make their way to the big screen again this year, and have earned their place among Screen Rant’s most anticipated movies of 2012.

Sony made a big splash at New York Comic-Con 2011, bringing presentations and footage for their upcoming slate of blockbuster movies.
The latest batch of set photos for Len Wiseman's 'Total Recall' include more futuristic vehicles and reveal Jessica Biel's outfit in the film.

Director Len Wiseman’s upcoming Total Recall is one of those projects that straddles the often fine line between remake and reinterpretation. It’s not a scene-by-scene refashioning of Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 film; however, if early descriptions are accurate, the new Total Recall also deviates significantly from Philip K. Dick’s original source material, the short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.”

Wiseman’s Total Recall will be a fairly a straightforward sci-fi adventure, in comparison to that of Verhoeven’s creation – which was largely just a violent Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle. It is also expected to focus more on the metaphysical themes and implications of Dick’s literature… and probably borrow a few tricks from Inception‘s playbook, when it comes to the art of mixing brains with brazen set pieces.

Earlier this month we had the chance to briefly chat with Kate Beckinsale about her roles in Underworld: Awakening (which sees the return of her character, vampire “death dealer,” Selene) and the remake of the 1990 Paul Verhoeven fan favorite Total Recall.

The actress, who also plays Lori in Total Recall (the role that Sharon Stone originated), talked a bit about the pleasure she is taking in playing a character who is a full fledged villain in the remake; and the comfort she finds in revisiting a character she knows as well as Selene in Underworld: Awakening.

You’ve now seen the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man, the quickly greenlit reboot of Sony’s big-money summer blockbuster franchise. Directed my Marc Webb, starring Andrew Garfield as the new Peter Parker and shot in 3D, The Amazing Spider-Man is one of the most anticipated films of summer 2012. But that’s not all Sony and Columbia Pictures have to offer…

In their presentation of epic proportions today, Sony Pictures is making sure the world knows that Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are gone, but that Spidey is not. Hosting a panel to showcase not only the return of Spider-Man, but the return of Ghost Rider with Spirit of Vengeance, the reboot of Total Recall and last but not least, 30 Minutes or Less.

Photos from the set of the 'Total Recall' remake show familiar sci-fi tropes like armored cops and hovercars.

Len Wiseman’s (Underwold) remake of Total Recall is in the midst of production up in Toronto, Canada, and the first photos snapped of the set have made their way online.

So, whether you wanted to see this remake get made or have prayed vehemently against it every day since it was announced, a new Total Recall is on the way, so you might as well take a look at how it’s coming together.

Total Recall is based on the short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by legendary sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick. The 1990 Paul Verhoeven movie adaptation was altered to be more of an action vehicle for star Arnold Schwarzenegger; this remake will instead go the route of sticking closer to Dick’s original sci-fi tale, which has a lot more reality-questioning mind-bends involved in its plot. Colin Farrell will be stepping into the lead role of ...

Click to continue reading ‘Total Recall’ Set Photos: Armored Cops & Hovercars

Comic-Con 2011 is almost upon us and now we have the schedule for all the comic book and movie panels you want to see at the contention.

The 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International is just about here, which means that we (and a few of you readers) need to start plotting our itineraries and map routes that will help navigate the mad halls of the San Diego Convention Center in time to make all of those highly-anticipated panels.

This post will detail the movie-related panels that will held at Comic-Con ’11. You can find schedules for any of the TV-related panels over on our official Comic-Con ’11 Coverage Page.

The panels posted below are ones we’ll be scrambling to attend. Most of them are of course related to movies, but there is always room for some comic-related stuff too – after all, comics and movies are like close cousins these days .

That said, included in the ...

Click to continue reading Complete Comic-Con 2011 Movie Panel Schedule
