The year 2012 is a pivotal one – and not just because of that whole ‘world coming to an end’ business.

Sure, in one sense the movies of 2012 will be a smattering of the usual varieties, in the usual genres, encompassing the usual range of quality. However, within that spectrum of cinematic potential, there are some definite matters of interest amongst hardcore movie geeks that will be addressed or proven within the next calendar year.

We’d like to offer 5 questions we think movie geeks should be keeping in mind as they view their most anticipated films and watch the debates unfold – all while the box office profits get tallied, and the future of the movie biz is once again charted.

‘Total Recall’ Official Synopsis & Kate Beckinsale Interview

One entry on our Most Anticipated Movies of 2012 list that seems to surprise a number of people is Total Recall: a film that’s part reboot of the popular 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi action romp, part re-interpretation of the original Philip K. Dick short story, “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale”.

In our list we look at over 30 upcoming movies that will be covering some familiar ground, letting you know who is involved, what our take on it is, and how the project should be labeled:

Remake – Recreating a previously released film.
Reboot – Doing a “fresh start” re-launch of a previously established franchise or character.
Reinterpretation – Creating a unique new cinematic vision of literary source material.

Our list consists of films currently in production or confirmed for production, in order of their release dates.

Sony Panel NYCC ’11: ‘Ghost Rider 2′, ‘Underworld 4′ & ‘Total Recall’

Sony made a big splash at New York Comic-Con 2011, bringing presentations and footage for their upcoming slate of blockbuster movies. The biggest films fans are expecting to see at NYCC are Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, The Amazing Spider-Man and the Total Recall remake, so the only question is: will Sony fulfill their wishes or leave them feeling disappointed?

Read over our coverage of the Sony Panel at NYCC ’11 to find out just how big the studio went to promote its superhero films to the geek masses.

‘Total Recall’ Set Pics: Crashed Vehicles, Green Screens & Jessica Biel

Director Len Wiseman’s upcoming Total Recall is one of those projects that straddles the often fine line between remake and reinterpretation. It’s not a scene-by-scene refashioning of Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 film; however, if early descriptions are accurate, the new Total Recall also deviates significantly from Philip K. Dick’s original source material, the short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.”

Wiseman’s Total Recall will be a fairly a straightforward sci-fi adventure, in comparison to that of Verhoeven’s creation – which was largely just a violent Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle. It is also expected to focus more on the metaphysical themes and implications of Dick’s literature… and probably borrow a few tricks from Inception‘s playbook, when it comes to the art of mixing brains with brazen set pieces.

Kate Beckinsale Video Interview: Underworld 4 & Total Recall

Earlier this month we had the chance to briefly chat with Kate Beckinsale about her roles in Underworld: Awakening (which sees the return of her character, vampire “death dealer,” Selene) and the remake of the 1990 Paul Verhoeven fan favorite Total Recall.

The actress, who also plays Lori in Total Recall (the role that Sharon Stone originated), talked a bit about the pleasure she is taking in playing a character who is a full fledged villain in the remake; and the comfort she finds in revisiting a character she knows as well as Selene in Underworld: Awakening.

Sony Pictures Panel Featuring Spider-Man, Ghost Rider 2 & Total Recall

You’ve now seen the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man, the quickly greenlit reboot of Sony’s big-money summer blockbuster franchise. Directed my Marc Webb, starring Andrew Garfield as the new Peter Parker and shot in 3D, The Amazing Spider-Man is one of the most anticipated films of summer 2012. But that’s not all Sony and Columbia Pictures have to offer…

In their presentation of epic proportions today, Sony Pictures is making sure the world knows that Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire are gone, but that Spidey is not. Hosting a panel to showcase not only the return of Spider-Man, but the return of Ghost Rider with Spirit of Vengeance, the reboot of Total Recall and last but not least, 30 Minutes or Less.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 waved its wand and unleashed some serious magic at the box office over the weekend. The final installment in the decade-old franchise obliterated records with its debut grossing an astonishing $168.6 million. Harry Potter (read our Deathly Hallows, Part 2 review) grossed $92 million on Friday (including midnight showings which brought in $43.5 million) giving it the largest single day gross in history.

Len Wiseman’s (Underwold) remake of Total Recall is in the midst of production up in Toronto, Canada, and the first photos snapped of the set have made their way online.

So, whether you wanted to see this remake get made or have prayed vehemently against it every day since it was announced, a new Total Recall is on the way, so you might as well take a look at how it’s coming together.

Total Recall is based on the short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by legendary sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick. The 1990 Paul Verhoeven movie adaptation was altered to be more of an action vehicle for star Arnold Schwarzenegger; this remake will instead go the route of sticking closer to Dick’s original sci-fi tale, which has a lot more reality-questioning mind-bends involved in its plot. The 2011 San Diego Comic-Con International is just about here, which means that we (and a few of you readers) need to start plotting our itineraries and map routes that will help navigate the mad halls of the San Diego Convention Center in time to make all of those highly-anticipated panels.

Zach Braff Joins ‘Oz’; John Cho Has ‘Total Recall’

Two very different projects – Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful and Columbia Pictures’ Total Recall – are slated to begin shooting in the near future. Hence why there’s recently been an uptick in casting news for both director Sam Raimi’s fantasy prequel and Len Wiseman’s sci-fi remake.

Zach Braff is the latest addition to the cast of Raimi’s Wizard of Oz flick; meanwhile, John Cho (a.k.a. Sulu in the new Star Trek – and Harold from the Harold & Kumar movies) has signed on for Wiseman’s new project.

Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel & Bill Nighy Confirmed for ‘Total Recall’ Remake

Things are moving quickly for Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake. First, Colin Farrell snagged the lead role back in January. Then, Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston joined the cast as the villain, Vilos Cohaagen, a few months later.

Earlier this month, we reported that Ethan Hawke was set for a cameo in the movie, and now we have news on three more important additions to the film. Could Wiseman’s remake cast surpass that of the much-loved original film?

While the two female lead roles in Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake may not exactly be the most high-proile/in-demand right now, a slew of noteworthy actresses have already tested for the parts. It now looks like the director has found his leading lady in the familiar shape of Kate Beckinsale – his wife and the star of his two Underworld movies.

Bryan Cranston Breaks Bad as ‘Total Recall’ Villain

It’s been announced that Bryan Cranston – three-time Emmy-winning star of AMC’s Breaking Bad – is in negotiations to star as the villain in the upcoming Total Recall remake, which is in development over at Columbia Pictures.

The remake is of course being directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld) and will star Colin Farrell as Douglas Quaid, the leading role once made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The announcement of Cranston as the villain is somewhat surprising (albeit welcome): the last we heard about this Total Recall remake was that a shortlist of actresses were being considered for the film’s two leading female roles – one of which was played by Sharon Stone in Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 adaptation of famed sci-fi author Phillip K. Dick’s short story, “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale”.

1990′s R-Rated sci-fi adventure film Total Recall is another item on the infinitely growing list of remakes. Poised as a different retelling of Philip K. Dick’s short story and to be directed by Len Wiseman, Total Recall is on the verge of getting its new leading man.

Wiseman made public his wishes for Irish star Colin Farrell to star as construction worker Douglas Quaid three weeks ago and while growing stars Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender have been mentioned for the part, Sony has reportedly offered the gig to Farrell.

Len Wiseman Wants Colin Farrell to Star in ‘Total Recall’ Remake

There are good Arnold Schwarzenegger movies—Terminator, Predator, True Lies—and then there are bad Arnold Schwarzenegger movies—Jingle All the Way, Batman and Robin, End of Days—and Total Recall, directed by Paul Verhoeven is most definitely the former. Unfortunately, as with every other 1980s movie you’ve ever cherished, Total Recall is being remade, this time with a script by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium). Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) is attached to direct and Neil Moritz (Fast and Furious) and Original Film are set to produce.

Now, word on the street is that Colin Farrell is the frontrunner to star as Douglas Quaid, the character originally portrayed by Schwarzenegger.
