Six years ago it looked like Tom Cruise’s career was on the downturn. A few PR missteps and the underperformance of Mission: Impossible 3 at the US box office ($135 million) led to his production deal at Paramount Pictures being scrapped – after a very public ticking off from the Viacom’s head honcho Sumner Redstone. The star’s seven film, $100 million-plus streak, was foiled when Robert Redford’s political drama Lions For Lambs scored just $15 million, and then Valkyrie and Knight and Day both failed to hit the magic $100 million mark at the domestic box office. Naysayers were spreading the word that Cruise’s twenty-five year reign at the top of the Hollywood food chain had finally come to an end.

‘Top Gun 2′ Recruits ‘The Town’ Screenwriter

There have been rumblings about Tom Cruise reprising his iconic role as Maverick under Tony Scott’s direction on Top Gun 2 for years now, but that pair’s collective frenzied work schedule has prevented that belated sequel from progressing beyond the earliest stages of development (a place even the infamously long-in-coming Ghostbusters 3 has managed to move past by now).

Paramount is now starting to get more serious about resurrecting the Top Gun brand for a second installment. The studio is planning a 3D theatrical re-release for the original 1984 blockbuster later this year; partially with the intent of cashing in on people’s nostalgia, but also as a means to drum up interest in a sequel.

“Ford will star as Branch Rickey, the innovative Major League Baseball executive who is best known for breaking MLB’s color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson to a minor league contract in 1945. Two years later, at the start of the 1947 major league baseball season, Robinson was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers major league baseball team with the help of Rickey. Rickey was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1967.”

‘Top Gun’ Being Prepped For 3D Theatrical Release

Hollywood is starting to become a bit obsessed with dusting off older blockbuster titles and converting them into 3D for theatrical release – in the hopes that moviegoers will jump at the chance to see their favorite (?) flicks brought to life in an extra dimension.

Case in point: a 3D version of The Lion King hits theaters this Friday, both Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Titanic will be given a 3D theatrical re-release early next year – and now word is out that Tony Scott’s Top Gun is also being converted into three dimensions.

There is no getting around the fact that sequels to popular movies are a way of life in Hollywood. If a movie has a strong box office showing then, inevitably, a sequel (or two) won’t be too far behind.

A sequel to a film based on a series of books is to be expected: The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Twilight Saga, as are films that are usually cheap and easy to produce: Saw, Friday the 13th, or Nightmare on Elm Street. Also films that have a well established mythos: Spider-Man, X-Men, Batman, Superman are almost always expected to have multiple sequels.

The world has changed significantly since Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Iceman (Val Kilmer) pledged to always be each other’s wingman in Top Gun and director Tony Scott plans for the sequel, Top Gun 2, to reflect that.

It has been 24 years since Top Gun was in theaters, where it made nearly $400 million—an insane amount of box office money for 1986. In the time since, it has spawned countless knockoffs and even a shot-for-shot remake in the form of Days of Thunder (sarcasm).

As recently as June, Jerry Bruckheimer talked about the possibility of a Top Gun 2, despite the decades that would separate the original and its sequel, but claimed that nothing was concrete. Jerry Bruckheimer Confirms ‘Top Gun 2′ Discussions

Do you feel the need? The need for speed? Well if you do, then you might be excited to learn that Hollywood is still tinkering with the idea of a sequel to the Tom Cruise classic Top Gun.

Recently, Jerry Bruckheimer discussed the possibility of Top Gun 2, confirming there have been talks of making a sequel to the 1986 blockbuster film for years.

Speaking with MTV, Bruckheimer had this to say:

It seems that I write about Tom Cruise on a daily basis. I see some people in the comments page ask if I’m being serious, or just sarcastic when I talk about “The Cruiser.”

Well to be honest, it’s a bit of both.

I feel that Cruise is a great movie star, but he has made some bad PR choices in the last couple of years. He’s not a bad actor, it’s just that tabloid journalism has gotten a bit crazy. No – strike that, tabloid journalism has gotten really, really crazy and they will pretty much hammer anyone in the public eye.

Poor Tom played right into their hands, and as a result his career has taken a bit of a hit. However, he hasn’t really had an all out bomb – Lions ...
