‘Tomb Raider’ Producer Offers Updates on Reboot Film

Oscar-nominated scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) have reportedly completed their script work for a rebooting of the Tomb Raider movie franchise, which GK Films acquired the rights to earlier this year. The plan, at that time, was to craft a cinematic reworking of badass adventurer Lara Croft’s origins that could (fairly) quickly begin production, in order to make a 2013 release date.

Producer Graham King (the upcoming Hugo) has now provided an update on the project, which he indicates is still aiming to begin shooting sometime next year.

King snagged an Academy Award for The Departed and has previously worked primarily on higher-pedigree titles, such as Traffic, Ali, The Aviator, and The Town. However, his upcoming production slate includes a mix of popcorn fare (Dark Shadows,

Tomb Raider protagonist Lara Croft might be one of the most iconic characters in video game history, but her two previous cinematic adaptations received a rather tepid response from fans and critics. Since there doesn’t seem to be anything Hollywood enjoys more than hitting the reset button on major franchises, it came as no surprise when it was announced earlier this year that GK Films had acquired the rights to reboot Tomb Raider.

Tomb Raider Reboot On Its Way Again

Having Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox not involved won’t stall the reboot of the Tomb Raider film franchise. In 2009, producer Dan Lin (Terminator Salvation, Sherlock Holmes) was set on offering another take on a younger Lara Croft that would offer a more character-driven and “realistic’ Tomb Raider origin story but it never came to be.

Now comes word that that Producer Graham King (Rango, The Town) has acquired the rights to Tomb Raider and will produce alongside Tim Headington (Hugo Cabret, The Tourist). The film will be a retelling of the Lara Croft origin story and is tentatively planned for a 2013 release.

Angelina Jolie pushed her career to a new level when she was cast as the lead in the Tomb Raider film adaptation as Lara Croft, the popular and voluptuous video game character. The film was a financial success and spawned a sequel, albeit a very bad one that made less money.

Since then, we’ve seen several more Tomb Raider video games come out, but nothing official on a third major film. There’s been talk of a reboot with rumored interest in Megan Fox to relaunch the franchise, but she claimed to have no interest and nothing came of it. Who then could Paramount Pictures look at to lead a reboot of Tomb Raider? How about the growing-in-popularity Olivia Wilde?

Some people incorrectly think the wretched Super Mario Brothers kicked off the video game movie trend in 1993 but actually it started way back in 1984 with the thriller Cloak & Dagger, based off the Atari game, starring a young Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Dabney Coleman.

Megan Fox has reportedly once again turned down the chance to play Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot, which we actually haven’t heard about since this time last year.

The funny thing is that this isn’t really news – by my count Megan Fox has been denying Lara Croft rumors since they began early last year.

However, since those “official” movie trades have trouble keeping up with news like our wonderful blogosphere , we shall discuss a bit (and look at some really pretty pictures).

Tomb Raider Reboot To Be “Realistic Origin Story”

It was announced earlier this year that a Tomb Raider reboot was in the works. The rumor of Megan Fox replacing Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft was denied straight away by her spokesperson, but according to producer Dan Lin (who produced Terminator Salvation) they are still going to go for a younger Lara, so Jolie is definitely not coming back to reprise the role for a third time.

In an interview at the premiere of Terminator Salvation, Lin talked about various different movies he’s involved with, one of which was the Tomb Raider reboot. When asked about what we can expect from the movie, he replied that it won’t be of the same feel as the previous incarnation:

Tomb Raider Reboot: Is Megan Fox In Or Out?

Over the last few days, rumors have popped up about a possible reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. Those rumors weren’t that much to get excited about until they included Megan Fox as a possible lead to take over the franchise from predecessor Angelina Jolie.

Well, you can end your excitement now as Fox’s involvement has been entirely debunked. Speaking to the folks over at io9, a spokesperson for the FHM’s sexiest woman of the year flat-out denied the Transformers leading lady having any involvement with a rumored new Tomb Raider installment.

“She’s not involved in the movie at all.”

Strict, stern and to the point. This does not mean however, that she can’t be involved if the project was actually a go.
