The Avengers fought-off top competition to retain its strong hold at the top of the box office. The Marvel adventure should gross an estimated $55 million worth of green over the three days, a number which gives the film an amazing $457 million total.

The Avengers is now on track to become the third highest-grossing film of all time at the US box office, and it should beat fellow comic book adventure The Dark Knight in the coming weeks (that film topped out at $533 million). The $220 million Shawarma advert probably won’t beat Titanic ($658 million) or Avatar ($760 million), but it should end its run in the company of those James Cameron films. Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: April 22, 2012

Think Like A Man surpassed expectations at the box office over the weekend and banked a powerful $33 million. The ensemble film was directed by Tim Story, the man behind such hits as The Fantastic Four and Barbershop. The film was marketed mainly at an African-American audience, and therefore the best comparison for the film would be Tyler Perry’s efforts, although Think Like A Man (read our review) has bested all of Perry’s recent movies, with its opening weekend coming close to the lifetime gross of Good Deeds. What’s even more interesting is that the film covered its production budget on its opening day.

Zac Efron grabbed second place with The Lucky One. The weekend take for the drama was a surprisingly good $22.8 million. The success ...

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: April 15th, 2012

The Hunger Games retained its hold at the top of the box office, grossing an additional $21.5 million and upping its gross to $337 million. The Gary Ross directed film has now scored almost $500 million globally, a fantastic number for the $78 million movie. Roll on Catching Fire.

The Farrelly Brothers directed The Three Stooges had a surprisingly good debut, grossing $17 million over the weekend. Helped by decent reviews (read ours) the film is on its way to recoup its $30 million production budget. The film has been a labour of love from the brothers Farrelly, who have been trying to get a Three Stooges film off the ground for over a decade, and this gross seems to have justified the hard work.

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: April 8th, 2012

The Hunger Games remained the box office champion over the weekend, scoring another $33 million and upping its mighty cume to $302 million. The Jennifer Lawrence-led adventure has now scored over $400 million globally.

Audiences showed that they love pie – American Pie. American Reunion (read our review) took a healthy $21.5 million worth of green at the box office over the weekend, showing that sometimes nostalgia rules the wallet. However, it must be noted that it was the lowest debut for the series since the first film in 1999. That film banked $18 million on its way to $102 million, while the sequel scored a mighty $45 million and topped out at $145 million. American Wedding in 2003 opened to $33 million and closed with just over $104 million.

Following the success of Avatar, James Cameron became the poster child for modern 3D in Hollywood – setting the gold standard for how filmmakers could approach the format artistically (i.e., subtle depth as opposed to gimmicky pop-out effects). As a result, more and more directors are coming around to the 3D format, and delivering their own enjoyable implementations of the effect (such as in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo).

However, while Cameron may have opened the eyes of directors and producers – not just money hungry studios – to the benefits of shooting in 3D, many moviegoers are still skeptical of films that are presented with post-converted 3D. ‘Titanic 3D’ Setting Sail In Spring 2012

James Cameron’s Titanic was an unprecedented box office smash when it hit theaters all the way back in 1997. The film also launched the careers of both Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet; ended up snagging a record eleven Academy Awards at the 1998 Oscars ceremony; and remains the second-highest grossing theatrical release of all time – behind Cameron’s other ultra-expensive must massively popular project, Avatar (ignoring inflation adjustments, of course ;-P).

Word got out last year that Cameron’s historical romance would (shockingly) be given a 3D theatrical re-release sometime in 2012 – and now an official release date has been set for the titular vessel’s return to the big screen.

Titanic 3D Confirmed for 2012 Release

If you didn’t think Roland Emmerich’s disaster spectacle 2012 had enough destruction in it – and lacked a pivotal third dimension – then here’s some news you’ll be interested in. James Cameron’s Oscar-winning and box office behemoth, Titanic, will be getting a 3D re-release in the Spring of 2012.

We’ve heard rumblings for a long time that Titanic would eventually get a 3D release and more recently Cameron said the aim was to release it in spring of 2012 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the titular ship’s sinking. Now Los Angeles Times – in a piece celebrating Titanic actress Gloria Stuart’s 100th birthday – has confirmed the aim by saying that Cameron is, “converting the blockbuster into 3-D for re-release in April 2012, the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.”

Cameron Eyeing Avatar & Titanic Theatrical Re-Releases

If anybody believes Gordon Gekko that “greed is good” it has to be James Cameron. As if $2.6 billion worldwide wasn’t enough for the creator of Avatar, in an interview with USA Today, the box office master is looking to milk his biggest cows for everything they’ve got.

“The wildcard is that we might be re-releasing [Avatar] this fall. It’s kind of gotten stomped out (in theaters) because of Alice in Wonderland. The word we’re getting back from exhibitors is we probably left a couple of hundred million dollars on the table as a result.”

“We’re targeting spring of 2012 for the release (of a 3D version of Titanic), which is the 100 year anniversary of the sailing of the ship.”

Avatar Hits $2 Billion, Oscar Competition Gets Stronger

Sick of Avatar or its week-after-week success and record-breaking numbers? Well, many moviegoers certainly aren’t as Avatar was again #1 at the box office this weekend, destroying Mel Gibson’s return to glory. Avatar’s estimated $30 million domestic draw over the weekend makes it number one for the seventh weekend in a row (7th!) and it also marks the largest 7th weekend for any movie ever.

Last weekend Avatar became the top grossing film of all time, finally passing Cameron’s other film in the Titanic and if that wasn’t enough, this weekend it passed the $2 billion mark, surpassing every expectation imaginable and further hammering down the predictions of those who doubted it could succeed.

I bet all those naysayers and doubters about how well Avatar would do at the box office have little to say now. James Cameron’s Avatar has surpassed Titanic as the number one all time grossing film worldwide. A fact that differs widely from the opinion of those who said it couldn’t beat The Twilight Saga: New Moon…

Yesterday, Monday January 25th, Avatar hit the $1.843 billion mark, finally passing the director’s other success story about that sinking ship. No one can doubt James Cameron ever again when it comes to what he can do with any property and Fox Studios has smiles all around. I’m waiting for Cameron to come out and say he’s “King of the World” (of Pandora this time?).

Back in the day (read: three weeks ago), some people said James Cameron’s weird blue alien movie with its gimmicky 3D effects would flop at the box office. Heck, they had spent so much making this movie and so much marketing it last minute, that there’s no way it would succeed, right? It would never come close to the numbers that Twilight Saga’s New Moon made in November; It wouldn’t even compete against Sherlock Holmes.

Update: Avatar just keeps on breaking records and barriers…

The weekend’s nearly over and the estimates for James Cameron’s Avatar are in. We’re looking at a $73 million domestic opening and just over $159 million worldwide bring its town debut gross at over $232 million.

Are these good or bad? Well, fans of the industry should be happy to know that this is the largest opening ever for an original film not based on an existing property (novel, short story) or film (sequel, remake) – so that’s always a win. It beat out Lord of the Rings: Return of the King for best December opening and (Update) might just squeeze past I am Legend. Cameron Confesses ‘Titanic’ Wasn’t a Passion Project

Ever wonder where Titanic got the drive to be so unbelievably, terrifyingly successful? Turns out the highest-grossing film of all time was only looking for acceptance from its distant, enigmatic director, James Cameron – acceptance that never came. James Cameron shared his thoughts on the doomed ship flick (and apparently everything else) in an interview with Playboy, due out in December.

Cameron went on to say:

“I made Titanic because I wanted to dive to a shipwreck, not because I particularly wanted to make the movie…Titanic was about ‘f*ck you’ money…”

Titanic and Terminator 2 3D Still In The Works

With the re-release of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 in 3D around the corner, the question around town has been: What’s the next blockbuster to enter the third dimension?

If you ask the folks over at Lightstorm Entertainment (James Cameron’s production company), the answer is obvious… Titanic?

Now, before you go running for your tissue box and 3D glasses, an insider suggests one should not expect to hear any specifics announced until later next year – but you’re not going to have to wait too long as Lightstorm partner Jon Landau says, “I don’t think it’s too far into the future. We’re pretty far down the road.”

‘Titanic’ And ‘T2′ In 3D? (Plus New Avatar Pic)

With his 3D CGI, Motion-Capture extravaganza Avatar on the way at the end of the year, just what else has James Cameron got on the horizon? Well, how about taking some of his past movies and transforming them into 3D as well? Word is that Cameron is thinking about doing his mega-success Titanic in 3D, and maybe Terminator 2, as well.

On top of this news, we also have a brand new image from Avatar, which shows the director himself getting in on the action. Sweet.
