Andy Serkis Discusses The Art of Motion-Capture Acting

Many people wouldn’t recognize Andy Serkis if they met him in person, yet they’re sure to remember many of the characters he’s portrayed onscreen, via the assistance of performance-capture technology.

Be it the raspy voiced bag of skin and bones that is Gollum from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the eponymous building-sized “monster” from King Kong, the genetically-altered chimp Caesar from Rise of the Planet of the Apes – or, most recently, the burly alcoholic Captain Haddock from The Adventures of Tintin, Serkis has served as the heart and soul of many a memorable digitally-rendered character. Hence, the previous studio-backed pushes for him to receive an Oscar nod for his work in both the Rings trilogy and the Apes franchise reboot/prequel.

The Oscars: 84th Academy Award Nominations

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and Oscar-nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone, The Hunger Games) jointly announced the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards this morning, on Tuesday January 24th. The actual 2012 Oscar ceremony will take place next month, on February 26th at the Kodak theater – with Billy Crystal serving as host, for the ninth time in his career.

In the aftermath of the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony, Hollywood “in-crowd” types like George Clooney and Meryl Streep are favored to take home the gold for acting, while multiple Globe-winning films such as The Artist and The Descendants are considered heavyweight contenders for the coveted Best Picture Oscar.

2012 Golden Globe Awards: Winners List

A relatively subdued Ricky Gervais took the stage as host of the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards. In his second year as host, it appears that all of last year’s controversy surrounding Gervais’ hosting must have impacted the funnyman, as all of his jabs appeared a little too nice compared to what was said last year.

For much of the evening, Michael Hazanavicius’ black-and-white silent film homage, The Artist, swept the Golden Globes in the comedy category, coming out on top overall with three wins for Best Original Score, Best Actor and Best Picture. Over on the drama side, Alexander Payne’s The Descendants took home the most awards in the drama category with a Best Actor win for George Clooney and Best Picture.

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 8, 2012

Low budget schlock-fest The Devil Inside topped the box office chart over the weekend and scared up a frightening $34.5 million. The film was picked up by Paramount Pictures’ Insurge imprint for $1 million dollars, and it already turned a profit following its midnight showings. The Devil Inside combines two popular horror staples, the exorcism pic and the “found footage” film and this combination appears to be a winner for Paramount, who also have the Paranormal Activity franchise as a lucrative money maker.

The Devil Inside was given a heavy marketing push by Paramount, and it opened big despite poor reviews (read ours). Most horror films have a massive dip during their second weekend and this shouldn’t be any different, probably even more so, due to bad word of mouth about that ending.

Weekend Box Office Wrap Up: January 2nd, 2012

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol topped the charts again over the weekend, grossing an additional $31.2 million. The spy film now has a total of just over $134 million – just a smidgen more than Mission: Impossible 3’s final gross.

M:I4 has now become Cruise’s fifteenth $100+ grosser as a star (sixteen if you include his extended cameo in Tropic Thunder) and it again highlights his bankability; even his recent ‘flops’ Knight and Day and Valkyrie grossed $75 million and $83 million respectively.

This fourth instalment of the Mission: Impossible franchise has also been a hit abroad, where it’s grossed almost $200, giving it a total gross of over $324 million. M:I3 topped out at $398 million in 2006, and this new effort will likely surpass that.

The Adventures of TinTin finally hits theaters this week, and if early reviews are any indication, director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson have a hit on their hands (which should be no surprise considering their respective track records).

Tintin follows the exploits of Belgian comic hero TinTin, his dog Snowy, and the irascible Captain Haddock as they face down danger in the hunt for a sunken treasure. The movie, which is 30 years in the making, was filmed entirely with motion-capture technology and looks to combine both Spielberg and Jackson’s talents into a fun, Indiana Jones-style adventure.

‘Tintin’ Sequel to be Based on ‘Calculus Affair’ Storyline?

Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson’s The Adentures of Tintin hasn’t even opened in the U.S. (at the time of writing this), but is already a critical and financial success, having scored a 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and raked in $233 million at the worldwide box office (with a good deal more expected from its U.S. run).

Given TinTin‘s success, it’s safe to assume that Jackson and Spielberg will be moving ahead with their original plan of trading duties on the sequel film, with Spielberg handing the directorial reins over to Jackson, while Jackson hands the producing job over to Spielberg. Much-ballyhooed (in a good and bad way) comedian Ricky Gervais will be back to host the Annual Golden Globes Ceremony for a third time in 2012, when the 69th annual iteration of the event takes place.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has officially announced its nominations for the 2012 Golden Globes show – and, just like any year, there are many obvious selections, a few surprises, and more than a handful of choices that are bound to rub moviegoers of all shades the wrong (or, in some cases, the right) way.

Polish cinematographer Janusz Kaminski and director Steven Spielberg have been inseparable since Schindler’s List. It’s almost difficult to imagine what a modern Spielberg film sans Kaminski might look like.

Their most recent project, War Horse, will be released later this month. And while there are moments that are unequivocally Spielbergian or Kaminski-esque, the film is also unlike anything else they’ve ever made — it’s easily their most (purposefully) old-fashioned collaboration to date.

Kathleen Kennedy Updates ‘Jurassic Park 4′ & ‘Tintin’ Sequel

It’s a busy time for both Steven Spielberg and his longtime production collaborator, Kathleen Kennedy. The two have been working together ever since Raiders of the Lost Ark back in 1981 (where the latter served as an “associate” to Spielberg) and will continue to do so in the future – including on next year’s Lincoln, the still-theoretical Jurassic Park 4, and the already-in-development sequel to Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin adaptation.

Kennedy and Spielberg were recently at a New York press junket for their other 2011 release, War Horse. The former has revealed some interesting tidbits of information, with regards to both a fourth Jurassic Park flick and the next 3D mo-cap Tintin movie.

There’s been a lot anticipation for Steven Spielberg’s and Peter Jackson’s The Adventures of Tintin, which will attempt to translate the comic books of Belgian writer/artist Georges Remi (a.k.a. Hergé) into a big-screen blockbuster adventure.

Tintin was released in UK theaters last month, but won’t debut in the U.S. until Christmas time. New ‘Adventures of Tintin’ Clip & Trailer: A Stylish 3D Cartoon

European audiences are eagerly anticipating director Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin, which opens around the country in a matter of weeks. Hence why numerous trailers for foreign audiences have been unveiled recently – as a means of heightening interest in the motion-capture animated comic book adaptation.

Today we have the first complete Tintin clip – along with a third international trailer – for you to watch. While U.S. moviegoers are going to have to be patient and wait a few months to see how the final product turns out, the outlook seems to be improving by the day.

Yet another international trailer for director Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin – which will open around Europe in three weeks’ time – has been released. This time, however, it’s not dubbed over in a non-English language.

Spielberg’s film continues to look like a loyal adaptation of the colorful serial adventure comic book series created by the late Belgian writer/artist Georges Remi (a.k.a. Hergé). Once again, though, the question ought to be asked: Was the decision to bring Adventures of Tintin to life via performance-capture animation a good one?

The answer for now seems to be… yes, actually. ‘Adventures of Tintin’ Spanish Trailer: Lots of Colorful 3D Action

Director Steven Spielberg and producer Peter Jackson’s Tintin comic book adaptation – which is internationally-titled The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn – will begin opening in theaters throughout Europe nearly two months before it reaches the U.S.

‘Adventures of Tintin’ Images Bring The Comic Book To Life

This winter’s The Adventures of Tintin is rather like the upcoming Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy adaptation – going off the creative talent involved, it seems near impossible that the movie will turn out badly.

A previously-released international trailer for Tintin teased it as being an energetic and imaginative old-fashioned adventure that properly realizes its beloved comic book source material, created by writer/illustrator Georges Prosper Remi (a.k.a. Hergé). What many found less impressive, however, was the film’s use of motion-capture technology to bring its (literally) animated characters to life.

Several new images from The Adventures of Tintin have been released online, offering a better look at the film’s human characters (and Snowy the dog). What really matters is how they look in motion, not in still frames – nonetheless, these stills offer a nice preview of the final product.

Comic-Con 2011: Paramount’s ‘The Adventures of Tin-Tin’ Panel

Steven Spielberg, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated filmmakers is making his first appearance at San Diego Comic Con 2011 to showcase his hotly-anticipated CGI adaptation of fan-favorite children’s novel, The Adventures of Tin-Tin.

While certainly encouraging, The Adventures of Tin-Tin trailer left some fans speculating whether or not Spielberg and company would tighten the gap in the “uncanny valley,” producing a film that both looks great as well as delivers believable computer-generated character animations. Not to mention bearing the pressure of a beloved franchise.

While the specifics of The Adventures of Tin-Tin panel are still mostly under wraps, Spielberg’s Comic Con debut is certainly encouraging – as the famed director must be pretty confident in the footage he’s going to screen in front of the 6,500 seats in Hall H.
