As we edge ever closer to the biggest movie award ceremony around, the Oscars, we have another set of nominations to mull over: The 37th Annual Saturn Awards.

While the Oscars, Golden Globes and the BAFTAs tend to recognize the more “serious” films (some would say in a way that is out of touch), award ceremonies like the Saturn Awards nominate films that average moviegoers would likely champion as their favorites of the year – not to mention the ceremony also recognizes the best TV shows and DVD release the year had to offer.

Last year the Saturn Awards were dominated by a little film called Avatar (you may have heard of it), but as you’ll see below fan favorite Inception dominates things this year with a whopping nine nominations, while other popular films like ...

Click to continue reading Inception Leads 2011 Saturn Award Nominees

Director Joe Johnston explains the positive experiences of working on 'Captain America: The First Avenger' compared to the problematic and rushed production of 'The Wolfman.'

When director Joe Johnston was announced as the official selection by Marvel Studios to helm what may be the most important Marvel Studios solo character film in Captain America: The First Avenger, there was some concern and trepidation. Sure, Johnston brought us highly respected October Sky and worked on films like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars: The Empire Strike Back, but he also directed Jurassic Park 3 and more recently, The Wolfman.

The Wolfman was a critical and box office flop. It had a stellar cast and a well known film title, but despite that it was plagued with production issues and other delays, and when it eventually opened in theaters it was not able to earn its production budget back. If The Wolfman is why you may be worried about ...

Click to continue reading Joe Johnston Compares ‘Captain America’ Experience to ‘The Wolfman’

The shortlist of nominees for the 2011 Golden Raspberry Award has been released and a new category has been added – Worst Eye-gouging Misuse of 3D.

As the ball dropped in Times Square and people everywhere sang inebriated versions of “Auld Lang Syne”, it marked the end of a lukewarm movie year. With 557 movies released in 2010, some of them were truly good and others were excruciatingly bad. People could argue all day about what makes a movie truly bad, but thankfully we have the 31st annual Golden Raspberry Awards to help us sort the chaff from the wheat.

Although the official list of nominees won’t release until January 24th, the L.A. Times Award Tracker blog has released the shortlist of nominees for the coveted “Razzie” or Golden Raspberry Award.

The nominations have been announced for the 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows than the Oscars and the Emmys.

We’re now into awards season once more (time flies, doesn’t it?), with the Emmys having come and gone already. Now we have the annual 2010 Scream Awards which celebrates the more fan-friendly type of movies and TV shows that the Oscars and the Emmys might not honor. And the great thing is YOU get to vote for the winners!

Last year they honored such fan-favorites as Star Trek, Watchmen and Fringe with nominations, which I’m sure pleased many of you. Even if they still nominate some questionable movies, there’s no doubting that for the most part, the Scream Awards are a lot more in line with the majority of the movie going audience who pay to see movies purely to be entertained.

Even if the Scream Awards tend to honor the “right” movies however, this year’s ...

Click to continue reading 2010 Scream Award Nominations

Box Office

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese remained kings of the box office as Shutter Island banked another $21 million to bring its total to $75 million. It looks like this just might out-gross The Departed to be the duo’s highest grossing film.

Bruce Willis’ Cop Out was second with a weekend take of $17 million. The film also stars Tracy Morgan and Seann William Scott. Cop Out, as every review and article that I’ve read states, is the first film that Kevin Smith has directed that he didn’t write.
It was a romantic weekend at the box office as Garry Marshall’s Valentine’s Day claimed the number one position with an estimated $52 million over the weekend (or$60 million over the four day Presidents Day weekend). With a slew of top names like Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba and Anne Hathaway it would appear that this rom-com is going to be pretty profitable (most of the cast took a back end deal).

Tomorrow marks the release of Universal’s remake of The Wolfman (see our review), starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving. The latter is, of course, a fan-favorite actor known for his roles as Agent Smith in The Matrix (I still quote “Mr. Anderson” on a regular basis), V in V For Vendetta and Lord Elrond in Lord of the Rings.

Of course, if you know anything about the Lord of the Rings/Tolkien universe then you’ll be aware that Lord Elrond doesn’t just appear in “the trilogy” but also in The Hobbit, which is the book that precedes the events of LOTR. It’s bee a big point of discussion that producer Peter Jackson and director Guillermo del Toro will be including Weaving’s character, Elrond, in the upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit.

If you’re going to remake a classic movie, The Wolfman is an excellent example of how to do it right.

Screen Rant reviews The Wolfman

The Wolfman is a remake of the classic 1941 film. It’s not a sequel, prequel, reboot or re-imagining that takes place present day – it is a remake in the purest sense of the word. Now here at Screen Rant we tend to rail against remakes on a weekly basis, but I’m here to tell you that if you’re going to do it, this is the way to go about it.

The film takes place in Blackmoor, England, in 1891 and Benicio del Toro plays Lawrence Talbot – the fellow in the original film who was cursed to become a werewolf by being bitten ...

Click to continue reading ‘The Wolfman’ Review

And if fans of the film enjoy the cinematic version, then they’ll be able to get much more bang for their buck when the film hits DVD: Johnston has stated that he’s working on an extended cut of the film.

Johnston sat down with Shock Till You Drop and he said that another 17 minutes would be added to The Wolfman, most of it inserted into the first act. Johnston said that the footage had been removed during the third editing pass to push the story along so that audiences would get to the first wolfman transformation sooner.

According to Johnston:

“Well, I have to say that I always question what a director’s cut is.
Super Bowl XLIV‎ is over and the Saints were able to shut down Peyton Manning and the Colts, but we’re not here to talk about that.
On today’s movie media roundup, I’ve got a new clip and Superbowl ad for the upcoming horror remake, The Crazies; I’ve also got a new TV spot for The Wolfman remake; finally, a new photo of “The Dude” himself, Jeff Bridges, reprising his role as Kevin Flynn in Tron Legacy.

Again, no need to thank me for collecting all this stuff into one place for ya – we here at Screen Rant like to make your movie promo experience as convenient as possible! Now, if only we could get the studios to start compensating us for doing so…

Yeah, I could probably stretch this stuff out into three different posts, forcing you good people to sift through a lot of my ramblings to see the pretty pictures and clips I have to offer – but we here at Screen Rant believe in a lifestyle of convenience.

To prove it, today we’ve pulled together promotional material from three of the biggest movies on the docket for Winter/Spring 2010 – The Wolfman, The Losers, and From Paris With Love – into one roundup of promotional material.
While Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is the Marvel movie I’m most looking forward to, I’m also very eager to see what Joe Johnston will bring moviegoers and comic fans with his period piece live-action adaptation of Captain America, the man, the hero, who will lead good against evil in The Avengers.

Two weeks back we reported on some words that director Joe Johnston shared about the upcoming The First Avenger: Captain America movie which is set to begin filming this summer.
I don’t think the phrase “trouble behind-the-scenes” in regard to a movie has been more appropriately applied than to the upcoming adaptation of The Wolfman. All manner of troubles have occurred with this film – from new editors being brought in and the actual Wolfman design being changed well into production, to the studio flip-flopping back and forth between which musical scores they’re going to implement.

However, in spite of these alarm bells being set of we’re still really looking forward to The Wolfman here at Screen Rant (it made our 2010 most anticipated list) and I’m sure a lot of you are to. To fuel the fire of anticipation today we have a couple of new Wolfman items: a behind-the-scenes featurette and a sound clip of what the Wolfman’s howl sounds like.

Anyone who’s been keeping an eye on Joe Joe Johnston’s (Captain America) version of The Wolfman will know it’s had a fairly troubled production. Actually “fairly troubled” is an understatement – there’s been problems ranging from new editors being brought in to re-cut the film to a new creature design that was put into play well into production. Talk about alarm bells.

One of the other troubles The Wolfman has had is the musical score: As we reported as far back as August of 2008, Tim Burton collaborator Danny Elfman was brought on to compose The Wolfman score. But as The Playlist reports, Universal replaced Danny Elfman’s score in November with one by Paul Haslinger (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans). Bad news for those looking forward to Elfman’s music accompanying Benicio Del Toro’s wolf howling.

There really does seem to be a curse of the wolf man; at least, there seems to be some truth to the legend as far as Universal’s classic horror remake The Wolfman is concerned . The Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Hidalgo) directed film has been plagued by several re-shoots resulting in the continuous push back of the release date. And as if there wasn’t enough salt rubbed into Johnston’s open wound, Universal brought in an entire new team of editors to RE-CUT THE FILM!

Some critics and fans are entirely against remakes, and the reaction to The Wolfman has been no different. There will always be those people who think that the original film will always stand on its own and should never be defiled by a modern touch. I happen to think that some films are worthy of ...

Click to continue reading The Wolfman TV Spot Will Make You Howl

With the mega-sporting event of the Superbowl rolling around once more, for us movie fans it means that the biggest studios in the business will be paying money (A LOT of it – $3 million to be exact) to run 30-second TV spots during the event.

Adage has the info on which studios have bought ad space and which movies they will be advertising, so read on below to find out.

During Superbowl XLIV on February 7th this year, you’ll be seeing ads from three of the biggest studios: Universal, Paramount and Walt Disney.

First, Paramount has bought the most amount of spots with a total of three and they will be advertising Iron Man 2, Shutter Island and The Last Airbender, all of which are highly anticipated around these parts (all three made Screen Rant’s 2010 ...

Click to continue reading Which Movies Are Getting Ads at Super Bowl XLIV?

An official site for Universal’s The Wolfman has launched in preparation for the film’s debut in theaters early next year. The site is pretty much the standard fare you’d expect for a film like this: flashy flash player pictures, a bit of music from the film’s score, a replay of the trailer, etc…

If you’re interested, keep reading to see what kind of fluff extra content the studio has up on the site to get you interested in The Wolfman.

So what kind of content would you expect from a Wolfman site? Why, a history of werewolf mythology, of course!

On the site you can delve into the both the historical and cinematic history of “lycanthropy,” which is the technical term for the werewolf (disease? curse?). The “history” covers both the types of lycanthropy that one can ...

Click to continue reading Wolfman Official Site Launches

We know you've been waiting for it - here's our list of the most anticipated movies of 2010!

As we come to the end of 2009, it’s time to look forward and put together our list of our most anticipated movies of 2010.

Last year could have been worse – 5 of our 10 most anticipated movies of 2009 turned out to live up to our expectations (including Watchmen, Up, and Star Trek), while the other five ranged from mediocre (Public Enemies) to downright disappointing (Terminator Salvation, Wolverine, Transformers 2). Of course “most anticipated” does not necessarily mean “movies we think are going to be awesome” – it’s “movies we hope are going to be awesome.”

This year the task was made a lot easier thanks to our senior editor Kofi Outlaw putting together Screen Rant’s 2010 movie preview, giving us a one-stop list from which to gather the biggies. ...

Click to continue reading Our 20 Most Anticipated Movies Of 2010
